We had a tough game at Oxford United last week and it was disappointing to go out of the FA Cup. We’ve had a lot of cup games recently but performances have been very pleasing. We created numerous chances at Oxford, against a side that doesn’t concede many goals, we just needed to be more clinical.

It’s really important for us that we get back to winning ways and finish 2022 with a positive result. Cardiff City Ladies are top of the league below and a very good side, who are unbeaten this season. They are on a good cup run and have beaten some higherranked opposition, so we know it will be a tough game. We will have to be at our best to get the right result.

This is obviously our final game of 2022 and all our focus is on entering the Christmas break with a victory. We return to action with a game against Cheltenham Town at Home Park on January 8, the first of many very important games at the start of the New Year.

We’ve won three of our last four games and momentum is very important in football. The aim is to finish 2022 on a high and take that as a stepping stone into 2023.

Welcome to the Manadon Sports Hub for today’s game and thanks to everyone for the wonderful support we have received so far this season.

THE OPPOSITION

The club was founded in 1975 as Llanedeyrn L.F.C. after a local charity match.

In 1981, the name was changed to Cardiff L.F.C., and in 1993 the club linked up with Inter Cardiff F.C. and started playing at the Cardiff Athletic Stadium.

In 1997, the connection with Inter Cardiff was terminated and the club changed its name to Cardiff County L.F.C while affiliating with the Cardiff County Council. In 2001, the club began affiliating with Cardiff City,

the professional men’s club from the same city.

In 2006, Cardiff City Ladies won the FA Women's Premier League Southern Division and were promoted to the National Division for the first time. Relegated in the 2007–08 season, the club again were promoted to the National Division in 2010–11.

Because Cardiff City Ladies has won the Welsh Women's Cup, the club has represented Wales played in the UEFA Women's Cup.

Argyle's run in the Vitality Women's FA Cup came to an end, as Oxford United knocked the travelling Greens out in the third round at Court Place Farm.

An early goal from Sarah King gave Oxford an early lead, which they doubled through former Pilgrim Leah Burridge in the final few minutes of the first half.

Argyle had a multitude of chances in both halves and came close to scoring on multiple occasions, but it was not enough to turn the tide for the visitors who found themselves three goals down before the final whistle blew.

Oxford took an early lead through King’s short-range effort five minutes into the start

of the match. Argyle attempted to respond through a series of crosses and shots from range, but Oxford’s defence kept the visitors at bay. Charlotte Whitmore and Zoe Cunningham both attempted to disrupt the Oxford defence on multiple occasions, the closest of the two being Whitmore with a one-onone chance that keeper Rose Kite cleared in the nick of time.

Georgia Wilson got the Greens’ biggest chance in the later stages of the half via a perfectly weighted pass over the defensive line. Wilson, through on the goalkeeper, was inches away from levelling the match, but Kite once again rushed to the edge of the area and cleared the ball from danger.

A ball into the box from Daisy McLachlan found Burridge in the centre of the penalty area, and she doubled the home side's lead with a finish from close range that flew under the diving Read in goal.

Although two goals down, Argyle persevered from the restart. Whitmore and Cunningham continued to cause issues for the U’s. Whitmore came closest in the 64th minute with another one-onone chance that Kite smothered once again.

Oxford’s third goal came six minutes later from McLachlan, whose shot on the edge of the area flew into the bottom right corner after a slight deflection.

With time running out, Argyle still searched for a way back into the match. Cunningham and substitute Amber Pollock continued to wriggle their way into dangerous areas, but it was not enough to break the opposition's clean sheet and shortly afterwards the referee whistle blew for full time.
