RYAN PERKS Managersnotes

The last couple of games we’ve had against Portsmouth have been really close. Last season, we beat them 2-1 and they beat us by that score in October, so I’m expecting another tight game. They beat Ipswich last week and a good side, so we know what to expect from them.

We’ve had a good start to the year, progressing in two cup competitions, but we know this will not be an easy game. From the last seven fixtures, we’ve won five and we obviously scored a lot of goals against Budleigh Salterton last weekend.

We always knew we would go into that game as strong favourites

and the girls were very professional on Sunday. We did the right things, we were very clinical in front of goal and a game to boost confidence for our attacking unit.

Today represents the beginning of a very important period for the club. We have some big games coming in the league and our focus is to get the right result, which would build momentum for the league programme.

We are delighted to welcome the Portsmouth staff, players and supporters to the Manadon Sports Hub today.

Enjoy the game, Ryan

Welcome to the Manadon Sports Hub for today’s game and thanks to everyone for the wonderful support we have received so far this season.

THE OPPOSITION

Portsmouth Football Club Ladies was formed in 1987, at a time when women's football was in its infancy and consequently the only option was for the team to play in the Southern Region League.

The club entered the league in 1988 where they enjoyed 10 good seasons. During this period the club started introducing Youth teams to compete at a local level.

In 1998, ten years after the team first entered the English women's league system, Portsmouth F.C. Ladies gained promotion into the South West Combination League and in the same season won the South West Combination League Cup.

Portsmouth F.C. Ladies became the first women's club in Hampshire to

receive the F.A. Charter Standard Club Award for excellence in provision of coaching and support staff in 2002. After having finished runners up in the 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 seasons, in the 2002/2003 season Portsmouth demonstrated the impact of this excellence in coaching as the team won the South West Combination League in a convincing manner, dropping only 2 points during the course of the entire season, to gain promotion into the Premier League Southern Division for the first time.

2012 was a famous year for the club, as they won promotion to the Premier League National Division but found themselves back in the Southern Premier after the reorganisation of the leagues in 2013-14.

ARGYLE WOMEN 15 BUDLEIGH SALTERTON 0

Argyle Women secured a place in the Devon Women’s Premier Cup final after an emphatic performance in front of goal at Manadon Sports Hub, against Budleigh Salterton.

The Greens started the game off strongly, scoring eight goals before the end of the first half and recording two hat-tricks in the process. Argyle continued their dominance into the second half, securing seven more goals before the referee blew for full time.

Argyle's first goal came two minutes into the first half thanks to Charlotte Whitmore, who hit a well-struck shot across the keeper that flew into the top corner, before Jemma Rose’s penalty eight minutes later made it two.

Whitmore rounded out her hat-trick by the 35th minute, grabbing goals either side of an effort by skipper Imy Crawford.

The half’s final goals came from Beth Ireland, who scored a remarkable hattrick of her own within five minutes before the referee blew for half-time.

With an eight-goal lead and all the momentum in his team’s favour, gaffer Ryan Perks opted to make all four subs before the second half started. A decision that aligned with comments he had previously made earlier this week regarding keeping match fitness levels at their highest.

Tiana Campbell, Georgia Wilson and goalscorers Crawford and Ireland made way for Rosie Train,

Zoe Cunningham, Kayley Lane and Amber Pollock as the second half began. Whitmore went the extra mile and grabbed her fourth goal of the match seconds into the half, thanks to an excellent run down the wing from Lane, who placed the ball into the feet of the clinical number seven.

Much like the first half, the goals continued to come thick and fast for Argyle. Substitute Pollock scored twice in the middle stages of the half after a period of close-range efforts were blocked by the Budleigh ‘keeper.

Following an own goal, Pollock grabbed her hat-trick goal, thanks to some clever footwork and a pinpoint finish that squeezed past the keeper.

Argyle’s final goals came from Lane and Pollock, who both comfortably finished their chances within the penalty area. Lane scored Argyle's 14th goal in the 70th minute, whilst Pollock's fourth and final goal of the game came in the 89th minute.

Argyle will take on local rivals Exeter City Women in the final for the chance of claiming their first piece of silverware this season.
