MANAGERS NOTES

With a depleted squad, we again showed a great team effort and character, and competed for long periods against an excellent team

Welcome to Kimberley Stadium for today’s fixture against St Austell in the second round of the FA Cup. I would like to firstly thank the 600 plus fans who attended our last home fixture against Ipswich at Home Park. Since our last home match, we have had three away fixtures on the bounce, with 2 in the cup and 1 in the league with a mixed bag of results but three very good team performances. We played Chichester in the League Cup, and although we dominated the game from start to finish, we didn’t take our chances, and a couple of defensive errors cost us the game, but the performance was very positive. We took this performance into the first round of the FA Cup. And after a very dominant performance and a show of character from the girls, we came away with a comfortable 5-3 victory against Keynsham. We followed this away trip with an away game to Oxford, who have been on a good run of form in both league and cup. With a depleted squad, we again showed a great team effort and character and competed for long periods with an excellent team. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on our side and with a couple of fortunate goals, Oxford came

away with a 3-0 Victory. There were plenty of positives to take from all three performances, and we are looking to continue this today and hopefully continue our FA Cup run. Today we host AFC St Austell, who have had an unbeaten start to their season in the southwest regional women’s premier league, having played 6, won 5, drew 1 and lost 0. Scoring 28 and only conceding 6. AFC St Austell will be looking to show us that they can compete at a higher level and are coming into the game in full confidence. We will need to be wary of top goalscoring Charlotte Whitmore who has scored 15 in 9 appearances. We have an important December coming up, and we will be looking to build some momentum going into the new year. We are pleased to announce the signing of Lucy Hack who has now came through our player pathway at Plymouth Argyle and will be in the squad today. We hope you enjoy today’s game, and thank you for your support.

Thanks, Ryan Perks - First Team Manager

Getting to know...

Natasha Knapman Striker Natasha Knapman is well known to Argyle fans and fans of Women’s football at this level. Argyle’s record goalscorer, Tash, is known for her prolific finishing and has scored over 100 goals for the Pilgrims in several stints at the club. Tash made her debut for Argyle back in 2009, where she scored twice in a 5-1 win over Swindon Supermarine. During her time with Argyle, Tash was the top goalscorer in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division back in 2012 with 14 goals. Tash went on to play for Yeovil Town in the Women’s Super League 2, now known as the Championship, before initially returning to Argyle in 2016. After several years of prolific goal-scoring,

Tash, like many other senior players, briefly left the club but has returned again this season. Tash is unsurprisingly the current top goalscorer this season. While it took a couple of games for Tash to get up and running, she currently has four goals in her last two games after following a goal against Chichester with a FA Cup hattrick against Keynsham Town. Argyle will be hoping that those goals can kickstart Tash’s season and that she can continue her fine goal scoring form into today’s game against St Austell.

match report

Oxford 3.0 PAWFC Sunday 21st November 2021, 14:00 Court Place Farm

Plymouth Argyle Women put in a determined and battling performance in their 3-0 defeat against Oxford United. While the scoreline didn’t go their way, no one could doubt the determination and commitment of the Argyle players who put everything into the game. Argyle were forced into several changes from last weekend’s 5-3 win over Keynsham, with Jemma Rose, Ellen Thomas and top goal scorer Natasha Knapman all unavailable. Argyle defended well and restricted their opponents to very few opportunities in the early stages. In fact Argyle nearly took the lead in the 18th minute. Perrin whipped a cross into the Oxford box, which Alexander spilt, the ball nearly fell to Zoe Cunningham, but it was agonisingly out of reach.

Having nearly had the chance to take the lead, Argyle were punished 2 minutes later when Oxford took the lead. A cross into the Argyle box deflected off an A defender and fell to Panting, who did well to fire the ball into the bottom corner. After the goal, Argyle continued to restrict Oxford to very few opportunities until the 42nd minute. Lumsden found some space on the edge of the box, and her shot drew an incredible save from Poppy Soper, who palmed the ball away for a corner. Then from the resulting corner, Oxford doubled their lead. Oxford swung the corner towards the far post and found Mackenzie, whose header struck the Argyle post and rebounded to Casley, who tapped home. The 2nd half continued in the same vein as the first, with Argyle defending resolutely. But in the 56th minute, Oxford got their third goal. After Lumsden burst into the Argyle box, Cross got back to tackle her, but the ball unluckily rebounded back off Lumsden and into the Argyle net. Despite the scoreline, it was a positive performance from Argyle, who on another day with a bit more luck could have gotten a result. Instead, the Pilgrims will look to next weekend when they take on St Austell in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup and attempt to get back to winning ways. Plymouth Argyle would like to extend a warm welcome to today’s visitors to Kimberley Stadium

.Today’s opposition currently play their football in the South West Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division, one league above Argyle’s development team. St Austell currently sit 3rd in the division with 16 points from 6 games and are one of two teams to remain undefeated in their division. One player to watch for the Lillywhites today is midfielder Kayley Lane. Lane who recently signed for Argyle is actually elligable to play against the Pilgrims today due to having played for St Austell in the FA Cup prior to re-joining the Pilgrims earlier this season. Lane scored for St Austell as they beat Torquay 2-0 in the previous round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup, St Austell will be looking to continue their bright start to the season with a cup upset against Argyle.
