MANAGERS NOTES

We are going into today’s game as underdogs, but the beauty of the FA Cup is the unknown, so hopefully we can get a positive result.

Firstly, I would like to thank all the fans for coming along to today’s FA Cup 4th Round tie against Championship side Charlton Athletic. We hope you all have an enjoyable afternoon at Home Park. It’s great to be back playing our second game of the season at Home Park today, and it gives the girls the opportunity to showcase our development as a team over the past 16 months. Although the result didn’t go our way against Ipswich last time out, the players loved the opportunity to play at Home Park and are looking forward to the game. We have had a fantastic start to 2022 with three wins from three, and we want to continue the momentum gained and continue to grow as a team. We are going into today’s game as underdogs, but the beauty of the FA Cup is the unknown, so hopefully, we can get a positive result and progress into the 5th round for the first time ever.

Today we are missing Kayley Lane (Cup Tied) and Mari Ward (International Duty), which is two big losses to the squad, but on a more positive note, we welcome back Rebecca Dandridge into the squad after a long layoff. Charlton are on a good run of form themselves with two wins and a draw in 2022 and will be coming into this game with confidence after an impressive 2-0 win away to Bristol City. Charlton are an aggressive pressing team, and we will need to be quick with the ball to prevent their press. It all adds up to the prospect of a thrilling afternoon at Home Park, and hopefully, we can continue our run in this year’s competition. Many Thanks, Ryan Perks - First Team Manager

Getting to know...

Zoe Cunningham #8 Argyle midfielder and captain Zoe Cunningham is a familiar face around Argyle, having played for the club for many years.

Zoe has also taken on the captaincy this year and has been an excellent leader on and off the pitch for this young Argyle side.

After taking a break from football, Zoe resigned for Argyle from Buckland Athletic in the summer of 2021 and quickly re-established herself as one of Argyle’s key players.

Zoe is one of Argyle’s top goal scorers this season. With six goals this season, including a number of excellent free kicks. Zoe is currently sponsored by P.Elliot.

An energetic box to box midfielder with a specialism in free kicks, Zoe has been one of Argyle’s top performers this season. Adept at both winning the ball back for Argyle and taking on and beating her opposite number, Cunningham is a key part of Argyle’s midfield.

Thank you for your support!

match report

Argyle 2.1 cardiff Sunday 23rd January 2022, 14:30 Manadon Sports & Community Hub

Plymouth Argyle Women made it three wins in a row after Mari Ward’s last-second goal gave them the win against relegation rivals Cardiff. Argyle saw plenty of the ball in the opening stages playing the ball from back to front, and when they did look for the ball in behind, Welsh international goalkeeper O’Sullivan was quick off her line to smother the loose balls. Argyle still threatened and nearly opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Gabi Alphous was played in wide by Kayley Lane, and her cross was mere inches away from finding Mari Ward, who would have had a tap in if she could have connected with the ball. With Argyle seeing nearly all of the ball, it became Ward’s turn to play provider. After a brilliant spell of possession in which nearly every Argyle player touched the ball, they found Ward on the right-hand side who whipped

a cross into Gabi Alphous, but on the stretch, her shot cannoned off the post and away to safety for Cardiff Despite having the better chances and more of the ball, Argyle went into half-time level with Cardiff. Argyle started the 2nd half like they did the first, and in the 67th minute, Argyle went closest to opening the scoring. O’Sullivan came out to claim an Argyle corner but spilt the ball to Mari Ward, whose shot was cleared off the line by Jones in the Cardiff defence. Then Cardiff hit back. In the 72nd minute, a long free-kick was played into the box, and after a coming together between Giota and a Cardiff attacker, the referee awarded a penalty to Cardiff. Up stepped Lloyd, who smashed the ball beyond Soper in the Argyle goal. Then in the 82nd minute, Nolan found Sargent one on one against Soper. But the Argyle keeper made a superb save to palm away Sargent’s shot when it looked destined to find the top corner. Then only minutes later, Argyle found their equaliser. Train floated in a free-kick from wide on the left and found Kayley Lane, who rose highest and placed her header into the bottom corner for her first goal since resigning for The Pilgrims. Then as we entered added time, Argyle continued to press for a winner. Argyle worked the ball to Tiana Campbell, whose defence-splitting pass found Mari Ward through one on one against O’Sullivan, and the 16-year-old lashed the ball into the bottom corner with the last kick of the game for her first goal for Argyle and a well-deserved winner. Plymouth Argyle Women Soper, Perrin, Hack, Papaioannou, Train, Lane, Ireland, Rose, Alphous, Pollock, Ward Subs: Tiana Campbell, Emily Eaton, Tash Knapman, Ellen Thomas, Imy Crawford
