MANAGERS NOTES

I ask the Green Army to get behind the girls again today your support is a great boost for the players. Photo Credit: QuinnKJ Photography

Welcome to Manadon Sports hub for today’s fixture against MK Dons in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Divison. We are now approaching the final weeks of a gruelling campaign now, but we need to continue to work hard and finish as strongly as possible to maintain our status within the league. We have learned a lot from the season so far, and we have built up some momentum since Christmas with six wins from eight games coming into today’s fixture. We come into today’s fixture on the back of three straight wins, scoring nine goals and only conceding one. We had a fantastic result last week against relegation rivals Chichester. We created lots of chances and defended well throughout the game, and it took a moment of brilliance from a top player in Jemma to secure the three points we deserved.

We have proven over the last few months that, when we are on our day we can go toe to toe with most teams in the league, but each fixture is different and a new challenge, and today will be no different. Mk Dons come into this game fighting for their survival and are in good form themselves and are unbeaten in their last four fixtures with two wins and two draws. I ask the Green Army to get behind the girls again today – your support is a great boost for the players. I hope you enjoy the game, and hopefully we can get another vital three points today.

Many Thanks, Ryan Perks - First Team Manager

Getting to know...

Ellen Thomas #2 Defender Ellen Thomas signed for Argyle in September 2021 and made her debut in our 2-0 win over Exter City in the FAWNL Cup. Formerly a midfielder, Ellen has converted into a wingback over recent seasons but has shown great versatility in her short time at Argyle. Playing as a fullback, wingback, winger and even as an outside centre back when Argyle have played a back three. Not only a versatile player, Ellen works extremely hard for her teammates and is a vocal player on the pitch for Argyle. With excellent delivery from wide areas as well, Ellen has perhaps been

unlucky not to register more assists for Argyle this season. Having formerly played for Fullham before joining Argyle, Ellen brings great experience to Argyle’s very young squad and has already become a popular player amongst the team despite her short time at the club. Ellen is sponsored by our excellent club photogrpaher. QuinnKJPhotography. Thank you for your support!

match report

Argyle 2.1 Chichester Sunday 13th February 2022, 14:30 Manadon Sports & Community Hub

Plymouth Argyle Women took a huge step towards safety after a Jemma Rose screamer gave them all three points against relegation rivals Chichester & Selsey Ladies. In their previous encounters, Chichester had shown their set-piece expertise to overcome Argyle, and after winning their first corner after just 4 minutes, Argyle could be forgiven for fearing the worst. Unfortunately for Argyle, it was Deja-Vu as Chichester opened the scoring thanks to Phelps’ far post header from Fox’s excellent delivery. After conceding the early goal, it was proving to be a scrappy game for both sides, with Argyle struggling to get going against their well-drilled opponents.

Eventually Argyle began to exert more control on the game and crafted two chances from corners of their own. Rosie Train’s delivery was narrowly out of Rose’s reach but did find Knapman, who saw her shot deflect behind for another corner. Knapman was again on the end of this corner but, this time, mistimed her far post header, which went over the Chichester bar. But in the 6th minute of added time Argyle did equalise. Rosie Train’s inswinging corner found Knapman at the far post, who this time planted her header into the back of the net and far beyond Foster for her 11th goal of the season. It was a vital goal for The Pilgrims, who went into the second half with momentum and pushed for their second goal. Foster had to be quick off her line to thwart efforts from Alphous and Ward as Argyle took more control of the second half, and they finally doubled their lead in the 59th minute. Jemma Rose picked the ball up 30 yards from the Chichester goal and unleashed a screamer that arrowed into the top right-hand corner far beyond the desperate leap of Foster. It was a goal worthy of winning any game, but with thirty minutes still to play and with their previous record against Chichester, The Pilgrims knew the game was far from over. Then Argyle were grateful for Soper in the Argyle goal for preserving their lead. Chichester worked the ball out to Simmonds, who found space on the right-hand side and shot across the Argyle goal where Soper was at full stretch to palm her shot wide of her far post. Then with the game ticking away and time running out for Chichester, the frustration showed as Yeates was shown a yellow card for dissent. But the yellow card only seemed to frustrate Yeates more as she was then shown a straight red and charged at referee Luke McFarlane before having to be pulled away by her teammates. Fortunately for Argyle, that was the last of the drama as they comfortably saw out the remainder of added time to preserve their place outside of the relegation zone. Plymouth Argyle Women: Soper, Ward, Thomas, Hack, Papaioannou, Train, Rose, Crawford, Cunningham Alphous, Knapman Subs: Read, Ireland, Pollock, Lane, Murphy.

NEXT UP vS Ipswich Town vs Argyle FA Women’s National league Sunday 27th march 2022, 2.00pm The goldstar ground

MK Dons Women currently sit 11th in the league table, Only one point behind Argyle but having played three games more than the Pilgrims. Argyle and MK Dons have already faced each other once this season, in their final games of 2021. The Dons ran out 3-1 winners when goals from Taho & Bright cancelled out Imy Crawford’s equaliser. Since that game, both teams have found their best form of the season. MK Dons have picked up 15 points from their last ten games. While Argyle have won six of their last eight league games. With their two defeats being narrow losses to Gillingham and Chichester & Selsey. We’d like to extend a warm welcome to today’s visitors and wish them a safe trip home after the game.
