MANAGERS NOTES
“
We host Charlton Athletic in the Women’s FA Cup 4th round on Sunday 30th January, it will be great to see you all there.
Welcome back to Manadon Sports Hub for our second Home game of 2022. I wanted to thank the fans who cheered the side on last week and those who stayed behind to clap the team off the pitch. We come into today’s game on a high after 2 wins from 2 in 2022 and another fantastic team performance from all the girls. It was great to follow up the 3 points against Cardiff with another 3 points against Portsmouth and get our first 3 points at home this season. Again, the girls executed the game plan, and I was once again really impressed with the out of possession part of the game. We pressed in units, our recovery runs were excellent for 90mins, and another pleasing aspect of the game was how solid we were in defence for 90 mins, and we limited Portsmouth to very few chances. We were excellent with the ball, and we created 5 or 6 really good opportunities to score more and make the game slightly more comfortable.

We welcome Cardiff to Manadon Sports hub today and know we are going to be in for a difficult game. Cardiff are going to come here today and look to rectify their 5-1 defeat to us only a couple of weeks ago. This game is massive for both sides as if we get the win today, we will be level on points with Cardiff and with a game in hand, which will give us a really good chance of staying up and put our own destiny in our hands. Thanks for your support as always, and we hope to give you another exciting and positive performance. Please also remember we host Charlton Athletic at Home Park in the Women’s FA Cup 4th round, on Sunday 30th January and it will be great to see you all at Home Park Thanks, Ryan Perks - First Team Manager
Getting to know...
poppy Soper #1 Argyle’s #1 Goal Keeper is Welsh international Poppy Soper. Despite being just 19, Poppy has established herself as Argyle’s undisputed #1 Goal Keeper. An excellent shot-stopper and distributor of the ball, Poppy has been ever-present in the Argyle lineup in the league this season. Only missing the FA Cup tie against St Austell as she was on international duty and club captain Katie Middleton deputized in goal for the Pilgrims. Poppy has been called up to every Welsh squad this season, and while she has yet to make her
debut, she has been back up to Laura O’Sullivan, Wales #1 and also Cardiff’s #1 goalkeeper as well. Still just 19, it has been clear to see Soper’s development even just this season as she has improved game on game and become one of Argyle’s most reliable and consistent players this season. Poppy Soper is sponsored by the Argyle Fan’s Trust and WS Consultancy Services. Thank you for your support!.

match report
Argyle 2.1 Portsmouth Sunday 23rd January 2022, 14:30 Manadon Sports & Community Hub
Plymouth Argyle Women made it 2 wins from 2 in 2022 after a brilliant 2-1 win against Portsmouth. Having won 5-1 away to Cardiff in their previous fixture, Argyle had every reason to be confident and they took the lead after just 6 minutes. A ball from midfield played Amber Pollock in behind the Portsmouth defence. She whipped an excellent cross towards the goal, which Pompey keeper Haughton could only palm away. Gabi Alphous did brilliantly to win the loose ball and play it to Beth Ireland, who smashed the ball into the top corner to give Argyle the early lead. Despite seeing more of the ball than Argyle, Pompey struggled to work any clear cut opportunities and were frustrated by a resilient Argyle side. Who looked to add more goals on the counter attack.

But in the 32nd minute, Portsmouth did equalise. A corner was whipped towards the Argyle goal, and after a scramble, Jazz Younger fired in the equaliser for Portsmouth. Despite the set back, the Argyle players showed no signs of letting it affect them as they looked to try and restore their lead. And only 5 minutes later, they did regain the lead. Gabi Alphous dribbled past Younger in the Pompey defence, and as she looked to shoot towards goal, Younger dove in and fouled her from behind. The ref had no choice but to award the penalty and show Younger the yellow card. Up stepped captain Zoe Cunningham who smashed the ball beyond Haughton to restore Argyle’s lead for her 2nd goal in two games. Portsmouth started quickly in the 2nd half and had their best two chances of the game early in the 2nd half. A mistake in the Argyle defence saw the ball fall to Hayley Bridge, but she blasted over the bar from the edge of the Argyle box. Portsmouth then threatened again from a corner, but Younger’s close-range header fell narrowly wide of the far post. Having survived those early opportunities, Argyle responded with several chances of their own. In the 50th minute, Mari Ward played Gabi Alphous through on goal, but her left-footed snapshot went wide of the near post. As the 2nd half progressed, Portsmouth continued to see more of the ball but failed to work many opportunities against the home side as Argyle regularly threatened on the counter attack. Gabi, Alphous, Mari ward and Amber Pollock all had chances to extend Argyle’s lead but in the end the Pilgrims saw out the 2-1 win relatively comfortably It was a massive result for Argyle, who made it back to back wins in the league for the first time this season.
