The FA Cup is something very special, it is a competition every young footballer dreams of playing in and we are no different. We reached the fourth round last year and we are hoping to have another good go this season.

The draw has been a little tougher this time around, playing against Cheltenham, a team from our league, but it’s nice to be at home.

We played Cheltenham on the opening day of the season and they beat us 3-1, but we were missing a few players on that occasion. It is a game that could either way, it just depends who performs best on the day. They have some threats that we will try to nullify and there

are some weaknesses we will look to exploit.

The last two league games have gone against us because of a single goal and it was disappointing to come away from them without any points because we felt we deserved a draw with Portsmouth, and we were better than Billericay.

It is the fine margins of football but we have a lot of optimism for today, and the challenges that await us over the next few weeks.

THE OPPOSITION

Formed in 1989 from a 5 a side team Cheltenham Town LFC started life as Cheltenham YMCA in the South West Combination League.

1998/99: League runner-up

2000/01: League runner-up

2007/2008: Runners up in SWWFL

2008/2009: The club reached the Vitality Women’s FA Cup Third Round for the first time as well as finishing the GFA County Cup as runner-up

July 2009: New committee formed and junior managers appointed

2009/2010: First and Reserve teams, plus newly formed junior teams, entered. Umbro Fives finalists at Wembley

2013/2014: First Team join the FA Women’s Premier League (Now FA Women’s National League).

2014/15: GFA County Cup runner-up

2016/17: GFA County Cup winners

2017/18: GFA County Cup runner-up

2018/19: GFA County Cup winners. First Team and Development Team both record their highest ever league finishes. The club is named as one of three winners of Respect Club Of The Year.

2020/21: Reached the Vitality Women’s FA Cup Third Round Proper for only the second time in the club’s history.

2021/22: Crowned FA Women’s National League Division One South-West Champions. First Team reached the semi-finals of the FA WNL Plate. GFA County Cup winners.

Argyle Women suffered an agonising defeat after Portsmouth turned the game around at Manadon Sports Hub.

Lily Greenslade’s goal gave Argyle an early lead, but Portsmouth levelled towards the end of the first half through Ava Rowbotham. Emma Jones put the opposition ahead with ten minutes to go, and although Argyle continued to pressure the visitors, it was not enough to take the win.

The Pilgrims took the game to the visitors from the moment the first whistle blew. Amber Pollock and Zoe Cunningham both challenged the ‘keeper

from distance, before Greenslade put Argyle into the lead with a tidy finish into the bottom corner which the goalkeeper could not keep out, despite getting a hand on the ball.

Argyle ‘keeper Jasmine Read was called upon in the minutes following the goal and, although she made numerous saves, eventually Portsmouth broke through.

Rowbotham found the back of the net after a well-placed ball over the top of the Argyle defence gave her enough room to get a shot away. Skipper Cunningham looked to respond with efforts from long-range following the

equaliser, but the half-time whistle blew shortly after.

After the break, Pollock and substitute Charlotte Whitmore continued to cause issues for the Pompey defence through their blistering pace, although Portsmouth also came close to scoring, with one effort striking both posts but staying out.

Pompey claimed their victory in the last few minutes after a quality finish from Emma Jones in the penalty area. A thunderous shot into the top right corner gave the visitors the lead, and although the Greens continued to try to fashion a second goal it was in vain.

With the game finished it was clear to see on the players’ and staff's faces that they were gutted by the result. Regardless, the fans cheered on the hardworking Greens who all felt the side deserved more from that match, similar to the previous week against Billericay Women.

ARGYLE WOMEN SWITCH TO BLACK SHORTS

Argyle Women will make the switch from white to black shorts on their playing kit for the remainder of the 22/23 FA Women’s National League season to reduce our players’ concerns over playing football while on their periods.

The club took the decision swiftly following a short consultation with members of the Argyle Women set-up, following the lead of other clubs, like West Bromwich Albion, Swansea City and Manchester City in the past few days.

The issue was brought further into the public consciousness following the Lionesses’ inspirational Euro 22 success earlier this summer, in which a number of the England Women players highlighted the difficulty of playing in white.

It is a simple, but effective, measure to ensure that our players can feel supported in concentrating fully on the 90 minutes on the pitch.

Argyle Women’s General Manager, Elaine Dalton-

Fyfe, said: “It’s great that the club are supporting our change to black shorts for our home matches.

“The team will now be able to focus on the performance without the distraction of wearing white shorts.

“It is important to us that we look smart and professional when representing the club and this means a lot to the girls.”
