It has been a running theme this season that our matches have been the classic ‘game of two halves’ and it was the same for the recent 2-1 defeat to London Bees.

3

Our simple ambition for this game is to secure the points we feel our performances, in patches, have warranted.

PERKSRYAN Managersnotes

Where we can take heart is the reaction from the girls at half-time because the second-half display was full of the intensity, quality and desire that we expect from the team. We just gave ourselves too much to do but the signs were very encouraging.

Enjoy the game, Ryan

We’ve had a chat with the girls and we all have high expectations as a squad. They have all set their own targets and the environment is all in place for a good result.

We are delighted to welcome the Crawley Wasps staff, players and supporters to the Manadon Hub today.

We take that into today and this is a game where we believe, if we perform to our full potential for the full 90 minutes, we are capable of taking maximum points. There is the added motivation that a win today will see us leapfrog Crawley in the league table.

There is a Cup game with St Austell next weekend and we desperately want to enjoy that fixture with league points on the board. A win today will change the whole mindset, although I must say the atmosphere and attitude within the group remains fantastic.

The Wasps then led the FA Women’s National League South for much of the following season, which was curtailed due to the

Coronavirus pandemic. However, they did win the Sussex Women’s Challenge Cup for the first time, beating Chichester on penalties. The club’s reserves performed well in their debut season in the FA Women’s National League Reserve Section, and the youth section swelled to over 100 players.

THE OPPOSITION

The 2018-19 season was unquestionably the most successful in the club’s history. The first team won the FA Women’s National League Division 1 South East (securing back-toback promotions), reached the League Cup final, and played Arsenal in front of 1,550 people in the fourth round of the Women’s Fourth Round of the FA Cup. The reserves and Under-18s also won their respective league titles.

Crawley Wasps, founded in 1991, have been essential in the successful growth of girls’ football in the Crawley region, as well as helping to pioneer the development of ladies and girls’ football in Sussex, through being a founding member of the Sussex County Women and Girls’ Football League in 2002-03.

In 2020, the Wasps began to put into place a new board of directors to increase off-field operations, hoping to become a fully operational part-time club and win promotion to the FA Women’s Championship within three years.

The Bees continued to press, relentlessly pursuing a second goal and it duly came in the 19th minute. London Bees fed the ball to Jade Bell out wide and her cross into the centre was met by the unmarked Kayla Potter.

With the match entering the closing stages, Manager Ryan Perks sent on the returning Beth Ireland in place of Zoe Cunningham to continue piling on the pressure on the Bees defence.

Jess Burke was given her marching orders for her indiscretion as Argyle looked to capitalise on this final season’sdeterminingtoSundaylookArgylesailedfreeGreens,Unfortunatelyopportunity.fortheJemmaRose’skickwastoohighandoverthecrossbar.WomenwillnowtobouncebacknextwhentheytravelAFCSt.AustellintheroundofthisFAWNLCup.

Half-time came at an opportune moment for the Greens and Ryan Perks was able to tweak his side’s formation from a 4-2-3-1 to a 3-5-2 by introducing unmarkedcrosschance.beforefavour,buildingThetobeggingsecondunfortunateandthemselves.toandimmediateTheandinPanagiotaMorgan-HemmensKaitlynandPapaioannouplaceofAmberPollockTianaCampbell.tacticalchangepaiddividendstheGreensbegancarveoutchancesforKayleyLaneRosieTrainwerebothtoseeearlyhalfchancesgoasArgylelookedgetbackintothegame.pressurewasnowinArgyle’sanditwasn’tlongtheytooktheirAwell-placedfoundJemmaRoseattheback

Argyle’s confidence visibly grew, and the Greens pushed hard to grab an equalising goal. Kayley Lane and Rosie Train again carved out great opportunities but the Bees’ ‘keeper was equal to their efforts.

There would still be one final chance for Argyle when the Greens were awarded a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box after Charlotte Whitmore was hauled down when clear through on goal. London Bees’ defender

The visitors made a fastpaced start to the game and Argyle were behind in the seventh minute. A recycled London Bees corner found the head of Ryah Vyse, who made no mistake to powerfully plant the ball beyond Jasmine Read.
