A warm welcome to everyone today and a fantastic local derby to enjoy, as we look to progress to the semifinals of the County Cup.

It was a big challenge at Watford in our previous game and a very good side, but we know that game will not define our season. They are a top side with a big budget and the mood within our squad has been very good in training this week.

We have moved on to this game today and great to play against MAP. We know a lot of their players, and vice versa, and there are girls who have come through the MAP system, while also being part of the Argyle pathway.

Positive relationships with local sides are massively important for female football, particularly for the younger age groups. What really matters is that clubs provide the opportunities for girls to play football and develop into talented footballers.

The priority today, however, is for us to

progress in the County Cup. We made the final a couple of years ago and lost out on penalties against Exeter last season, so definitely a competition we would love to win.

We are the highest tier team in the Devon Cup and we have to enjoy the pressure of expectation. It is a game we want to win and, ultimately, a competition we want to win.

We are delighted to welcome the Marine Academy Plymouth staff, players and supporters to The Manadon Sports Hub today.

It is also a pleasure to welcome our mascots for the day, Morley Rangers Lionesses U12s – have a brilliant day with us.

THE OPPOSITION

Marine Academy Football Club offer over 25 competing teams from ages 6-adult.

They are one of the largest and most successful football networks in the South of England and players are recruited from their Soccer Tots community session from age 4 and pathways into the coaching school and future teams are formulated.

In addition to playing in the local youth league and cups and county competitions, MAP believe in both

challenging and providing additional opportunities for players by playing

local Academy sides, overseas tournaments and national competitions in a variety of formats, including futsal and have achieved fantastic success in these.

MAP have won countless leagues, cups and county titles locally. The players have a structured coaching approach delivered by FA qualified coaches and staff and, as a community club, all their workforce hold current safeguarding, first aid and coaching certificates.

MAP have strong links with all our local professional clubs and provide a pathway into their academies and the club has protocols centred around these agreements.

The main objective is to involve as many players as possible the opportunity to play football in a safe, structured, fun, professional environment. The club is based at the Academy and utilises all the facilities for training, playing, coach education and player analysis.

Argyle Women’s winning streak came to an end after a frustrating defeat at Watford on Sunday.

The hosts scored very early and got themselves to a 3-0 lead by half-time. Charlotte Whitmore gave the Greens some hope early in the second half, but two more Watford goals secured the Golden Girls’ victory.

Watford took an early lead through forward Gemma Davison, who scored her first goal of the season just two minutes into the first half. The Pilgrims almost responded through Whitmore after a well-placed pass from Lily Greenslade. Whitmore

rounded the keeper and got the shot away, but the chance was smothered.

Watford’s Flo Fyfe scored a brace to give Watford some daylight, the first from a Davison cross after some high pressure, and the second from a Poppy Wilson counterattack that tripled The Hornets’ lead going into the second half.

The second half would see Argyle deny Watford their clean sheet minutes after the whistle. An excellent ball behind the Watford defence would allow Whitmore to strike from distance. The shot was struck well and lobbed the keeper, giving the Pilgrims

the foothold in the match that they needed.

The Hornets would respond shortly after with their fourth goal of the match. A well-placed cross from a corner found the head of Megan Chandler who at the back post beat Jasmine Read with a header that nestled into the back of the net.

The Golden Girls would find their fifth and final goal in the 76th minute through Ellie Head. A darting run into the box by substitute Adekite FatugaDada gave room for a cross to the onrushing Head, who headed home her first of the season.

Keeper Read would continue to face pressure from oncoming shots after Watford’s fifth, but did well to keep the score line as it was, palming a multitude of shots away from danger before the full time whilst was blown.

Argyle Women produced a superb second-half comeback against Gillingham on to claim their second win of the season.

The visitors led at the break through Kara Fordjour’s goal but, after the break, The Pilgrims dug deep, and strikes by Lily Greenslade and Beth Ireland turned things around in the Greens’ favour.

In a game played at Saltash’s Waterways Stadium, it was Argyle who started the brighter of the sides, with Greenslade and Amber Pollock responsible for numerous shots on goal in the early stages, with the Gills keeper either comfortably saving them or the shots just dragging wide.

The 30th minute saw both teams have huge chances. Gillingham’s Niamh Jestin went close after an unsuccessful challenge from keeper Read looked to have her rounded and beaten, but defender Jemma Rose

came to Read's rescue and cleared the ball from danger before Jestin had a chance to shoot.

A mis-hit clearance from Gills keeper Davies had her off her line and the ball in Argyle's possession. Pollock brought the ball down and played in the onrushing Rosie Train who immediately fired a shot that went just wide.

Although Argyle comfortably had control in the first half, it was Gillingham who found the first goal of the match. A poor back pass from skipper in the 36th minute led to Fordjour finding the net from distance.

Argyle got the equaliser they deserved 20 minutes into the second half. After winning the ball off a Gillingham defender, Greenslade found herself one-on-one. Davies rushed out, but Greenslade stayed cool and slotted the ball home for her first league goal this season.

Ireland would then send Argyle into the lead 11 minutes later, hitting a fantastic shot from the corner of the 18-yard box that flew across the keeper and into the top left corner, and sent

players and fans into jubilation.

The final major chance of the game came with five minutes remaining. From a Gillingham corner, Argyle cleared their lines to the edge of the penalty area where the visitors laid in wait. A shot flew towards the inside of the post and looked like a sure equaliser, but defender Jemma Rose once again came to the rescue. Her block on the line would help secure Argyle’s second win of the season.

This result sees the Pilgrims rise to eighth in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division. Next, they travel away to Watford in the hopes of continuing this good run of form.
