Crash Ensemble perform Philip Glass’ Glassworks

Sat 19 & Sun 20 Jul, 8pm | €30/28 (+ booking fee)

Glassworks was written by Philip Glass (Einstein on the Beach, Koyaanisqatsi, The Truman Show) in 1981 as a studio recording in a wildly innovative attempt to merge minimalism and pop, creating ‘classical’ pieces with infectious pop hooks. It soon became one of the composer’s most popular works.

Released in 1982 as an LP and cassette on the CBS label, whose roster of artists includes Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen, The LP and cassette had their own separate mixes. The LP was for home listening and the cassette had a headphone specific mix. It was Glass’s successful attempt to create a more pop-oriented ‘Walkman-suitable’ work.

Crash Ensemble is Ireland’s leading new music ensemble; a group of world-class musicians who play the most adventurous, ground-breaking music of today. They play music, tell stories, and bring their audiences on extraordinary new adventures.

Jilly Morgan’s Birthday Party

Wed 17 Sep, 8pm | €25 (+ booking fee)

Approx. Duration: 75mins (no interval)

Following a hit premiere in Limerick in May 2024, Jilly Morgan’s Birthday Party comes to Dún Laoghaire as part of a national tour. The play, though radically reimagined, is inspired by Anton Chekhov’s short story The Kiss.

It’s a story of love, longing and obsession, centring on Jack, and his experience of a brief, passionate kiss in the downstairs toilet at a party in Limerick City in 1983. The incident becomes Jack’s lifelong fixation. He kissed Jilly Morgan, at her own birthday party, and life, for him, will never be the same again. Taking place across four decades, this is an exciting, time-bending and darkly humorous piece of new writing about the rise and fall of a fantasy. It is a condensed social history and a portrait of a city.
