Party to celebrate Normanby House resident’s 100th birthday

Happy Birthday to Dorothy!

A party was held at Normanby House to celebrate the 100th birthday of our lovely resident Dorothy Bradley.

Dorothy and her late husband Ronald lived much of their married life in the Tower of London, where Ronald was curator of the Crown Jewels.

Dorothy enjoyed a glamorous life in London with happy memories of living in a place with such historic and cultural importance.

As well as receiving a 100th birthday message from the Queen, Dorothy also had a letter from the Tower of London, marking her special day.

Dorothy and Ronald retired back to Yorkshire, and after losing her husband, Dorothy eventually decided to live with her son, Stephen Bradley in Scarborough. She has two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren who all adore her, and never tire of her war-time stories!

The family very kindly laid on a party, with music, a birthday cake, drinks and a buffet.

Care home manager Tanya Thomas said: “Dorothy is a lovely lady and we were delighted and honoured that the family held her 100th birthday celebration at the home.

“It was a lovely occasion and Dorothy loved it.”

Countdown to Christmas across Saint Cecilia’s There’s a whole host of fun events going on in the run-up to Christmas.

Activities planned for the nursing home, include Staff Christmas Carols on the 14th and the home’s Christmas party on the 21st.

Residents at Normanby House will be visiting Irton Garden Centre on the 19th and 21st December, and youngsters from Childhaven will perform their nativity for us on the 13th and Skylark Nursery will visit for a singalong on the 19th.

At the care home, harpist John Dalton plays on the 13th, we have a friends and relatives evening on

the 18th, the Christmas party on the 20th, singer Matt Jones Green on the 22nd, singer Sammy Barnard on the 27th and the Christmas panto Peter Pan on the 3rd January.

Day care will welcome singer Matt from Rewind on the 12th, St George’s School Choir on the 13th and hold an Elf Day on the 14th.

Pindar School Choir visits on the

17th and the Ronald MacDonald Singers on the 18th. The Day Care Christmas disco is on the 19th.

Day care will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, re -opening for the 27th and 28th December, and closed on Saturday 29th, open on Monday 31st December and then closed on New Year’s Day, re-opening on Wednesday 2nd January.

Can we take this opportunity to wish all our residents, visitors, relatives and friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us across Saint Cecilia’s Care Group!

Saint Cecilia’s recognised at award events Saint Cecilia’s has gained recognition at a host of regional and national awards.

The company was a finalist in the Employer category at the Scarborough Business Awards.

Chef Laura Fielding reached the finals of the Care Home Catering Awards.

Laura and nurse Daniela Dias were runners-up in their categories at the Great British Care Awards regional heat in York. Saint Cecilia’s was a finalist in the same awards in the Care Employer category.

Our nurse recruitment initiative earlier this year was recognised with a runners-up place at the Caring UK Awards, where we were also a finalist in the Care Group of the Year category.

The team at the Great British Care Awards

£350 raised during Armistice run event As part of our activities to mark the centenary of Armistice, we teamed up with Scarborough Athletic Club’s Walk to Run Group to stage a fundraising run.

More than 50 runners turned out for a three-mile run followed by chilli, rice and cakes, courtesy of the Saint Cecilia’s team.

The run raised £350 for the Royal British Legion and representatives visited to collect the cheque.

Don’t be alarmed, it’s all part of Elf Day activities, raising money for Alzheimer’s Society!

We are pleased to announce that Alyson Ritchie is joining us in the New Year as our new Senior Registered Manager.

Alyson will have responsibility for the nursing home and a strategic role across all our centres.

She comes to us with 16 years’ experience in the NHS, formerly as a Practice Manager in primary care and latterly working in Cancer Services at the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This combination of skills is ideally suited to guiding the Nursing Home through these challenging times in the sector and driving up the quality of care.

She is looking forward to taking up the role, and working with the team to give our residents the best care we can.

feed back Emotional memories brought back during Armistice events

Harrowing time for Phyllis The Remembrance activities brought back vivid and frightening memories from the Second World War for nursing home resident Phyllis Padgham.

In 1943, aged just 14, Phyllis returned home late during a blackout from the confectioner and tobacconist’s shop where she worked to find that her home in Hastings had been bombed.

Phyllis, who spent the evening sheltering at a nearby high school, would learn the following day that her 27-year-old brother Ronald and her sister Joan’s fourmonth-old baby boy Deryck had both been killed and her mum and two sisters injured. She had the harrowing task of identifying the victims.

“It was really frightening at the time because I just didn’t know what had happened and where everyone was,” Phyllis said.

Phyllis is pictured with grand-daughter Chantel during the nursing home party The family lodged at the shop where Phyllis worked as it wasn’t until the war was over before their home was ready to live in again.

“From then on, every time the Germans came over it was terrifying, but I had to try hard to be brave because my mum was

just so scared.”

Phyllis married Ernie in 1954 and brought up three children, Brenda, David and Michael, who is managing director of Saint Cecilia’s care group, which includes the nursing home where Phyllis now lives.

Howard’s service history remembered The nursing home’s very own war hero had his medals on parade as we marked the Armistice Centenary.

Maintenance man Howard Johnson saw active service in Northern Ireland, Oman and the Falkland Islands during his time in the forces, from 1969 to 1984.

He served with the First Battalion Green Howards and 22nd SAS Regiment.

During our party to mark the Armistice Centenary, Howard sported four medals – for the Falklands Campaign, Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland Accumulated Service and Meritorious Medal, for outstanding service.

“This centenary, like all the Remembrance times, provides a time to stop and think about those colleagues I served with, those men who I sat down and had breakfast with and then did not see again,” he said.

feed back Poppy challenge is part of our Armistice commemoration Across all four Saint Cecilia’s centres we set the challenge to create the most coloured-in poppies.

Each centre took up the challenge but after days of frenetic colouring, day care was declared the winner.

The result was: Day care 887, nursing home 440, Normanby House 333 and the care home 156.

The nursing home held a special afternoon sing-along party to mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice.

Residents and staff enjoyed some wonderful tunes and were up and dancing!

Plenty of Pudsey for Children in Need celebrations!

Pudsey made many special guest appearances across Saint Cecilia’s as part of our celebrations for Children in Need day!

Pudsey onesies were very much in evidence as we enjoyed parties to mark the day.

A Zumba session was part of the celebrations at day care, whilst our own care bear Cecilia made an appearance at the nursing home.

Care home gets outside facelift in time for winter

Donation to Wheelhouse is a thank you for our chairs The Care Home has had a lick of paint on the outside as part of ongoing improvement work there.

The home has also had a new roof in recent weeks and a new stair lift has also been installed. â—? The excellent work of our gardener Stephen Slator was recognised when the home won a gold award at the Muck and Magic Awards, which celebrate the best local gardens.

Saint Cecilia's was very grateful for the recent donation of some chairs from the Wheelhouse Trust in Scarborough.

These have been put to great use in our local centres.

In return, we were happy to make a donation to the Wheelhouse Trust to support them in the work they do providing independent living accommodation for older residents.

Lounge gets a lick of paint at nursing home Anyone visiting the nursing home in recent weeks will have seen decorating work going on in the lounge.

The room has been getting a complete overhaul in time for the Christmas celebrations.

This is part of Saint Cecilia’s ongoing programme of improvements at the nursing home, which we began after we bought the property.

The home has also had a new boiler installed recently as well as

Software training gets under way Training has begun ready for the introduction of Mobile Care Monitoring software to our three homes to improve efficiency and care.

Carers will use an app on a mobile phone to update residents’ care records as they are delivering care to them on a daily basis.

This will save time.

Training began with sessions at Normanby House, where the software will be introduced first.
