Saint Cecilia's Newsletter December 2022

The end of another challenging year and the chance to celebrate Christmas and, we hope, look forward to better times ahead!

This year we saw a reduction in the impact of Covid-19 and a return to something more akin to normality. But then we had new challenges, with a nationwide shortage of staff and the costof-living crisis, to name but two.

Through all of this we are so grateful to you all – our fantastic residents and day care visitors and their relatives and friends and our amazing staff –for the wonderful support you have given Saint Cecilia’s this past two years. It has been unbelievable, and we are truly blessed.

Amidst the challenges we have continued to grow this year –adding Jubilee House and its residents and staff to the family. We are really proud of the progress we are making in Whitby and thank all those involved for their hard work in that endeavour.

We continue to invest in our other centres and look forward to keeping Saint Cecilia’s moving forward in 2023.

Employer of the Year! Employer of the Year!

Saint Cecilia’s was delighted to be named Employer of the Year Award at the Scarborough Business Excellence Awards run by the Scarborough News.

It was a great feather in our cap and a testament to the amazing work done by our fantastic staff… well done, everyone!

In the meantime, I hope you find time this festive season to enjoy a break and in thanking you once again, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Welcome to new nurses

Welcome to new nurses

So far, we have recruited three nurses from Ghana and are in the process of bringing in several more to bring our numbers up to strength.

Harriet, Yvonne and Evans arrived in Scarborough after a recruitment process which has taken the best part of a year to complete.

Director Aaron Padgham said: “This is a very exciting and significant moment for Saint

Cecilia’s as we welcome these staff from Ghana to Scarborough. “We are indebted to York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for helping us to smooth the process of bringing in the staff we desperately need.”

A pilot scheme – to enable social care providers to access health trust facilities for staff to study for and take their Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) – has been a lifeline for

Saint Cecilia’s and for the nurses it has recruited.

“The partnership working we have enjoyed with the NHS trust has been first-class and has gone beyond support in getting staff through the OSCE process right through our overall journey to recruit nursing staff from overseas to help us tackle the chronic staff shortages we are currently experiencing,” Mr Padgham added.

We were keen to get across the benefits of taking up a nursing career with Saint Cecilia’s as part of our current recruitment drive.

And what better way than to spell out some of the attractions of working with us on placards during a town centre rally.

We were heartened by the engagement we had with people in Scarborough and hope the event will help us recruit staff to keep building upon the care we provide.

Our managers, deputies and department managers have embarked upon a one-year, bespoke management development programme to help them to develop and get the most from their careers, and to ensure we continue to deliver the best in care.

The programme, Leading the Way, has been designed and developed specifically for Saint Cecilia’s by HR Learning & Development specialist James Clegg, with content tailored specifically for each cohort.

Part of our ongoing investment in staff development, the programme comprises seven, half-day workshops across a 12-

month period. It focuses on building and developing existing leadership skills and helping staff to develop new skills. The programme will focus on every aspect of leadership and management and has been designed following one to one meetings with all managers. Director Aaron Padgham said: “As Saint Cecilia’s grows, we want to

train and develop our leaders so that they, in turn, can lead our amazing staff to keep delivering wonderful care and improving on the services we provide. We are grateful to James for tailormaking this course for Saint Cecilia’s. The feedback we have had so far has been excellent.”

Care home residents enjoyed a fun-filled visit to the Scarborough Fair Collection at Lebberston.

They took a look around the attraction’s collection of fairground rides, steam engines, vintage organs and vintage and classical cars.

Some also took to the dance floor to try out some steps in the attraction’s ballroom.

Saint Cecilia’s remembers Saint Cecilia’s remembers

Across our centres, residents and staff remembered those who sacrificed their lives, in so many different conflicts, so that we can live today in freedom.

Many in our care settings will have lived through the horrors of war and for them Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday are always particularly poignant.

In these pictures, residents at Jubilee House are at work creating their window display.
