Celebration date set for 31October On 31st October we will hold an exciting, standalone celebration event to honour the hard-working people who provide adult social care on the Yorkshire coast!

We are planning a gala night at Scarborough Spa in celebration of social care and it promises to be a fantastic event.

On the evening, we’ll have professional comedian and compere, Steve Walls, who is a very popular performer in theatre, cabaret and events and always goes down a storm, plus West End singers! There’ll be lots more entertainment, great food, good company and above all, fun.

Gration will be joining us and we BBC Look North presenter Harry are also delighted that Yorkshire

Coast Radio has already agreed to support the evening.

In these tough and demanding times for social care, this brilliant evening will be a chance to honour those who play a crucial role in providing older and vulnerable adults with the care they need to enjoy quality of life.

It is a chance to say ‘thank you’ to social care providers and staff the nurses, care workers, personal assistants, support workers, shared lives carers, activities organisers, cooks, receptionists, maintenance staff, gardeners – everyone who works in adult social care.

TV cameras roll The nursing home found itself under the TV spotlight twice in recent weeks.

First, we had a crew in from the BBC 2 Newsnight programme, filming a piece on the likely impact of Brexit on homes like Saint Cecilia’s.

Then just a few weeks later we had a crew from the Channel 4 programme Dispatches, filming a report on Brexit and overseas workers. This programme aired on 8th April.

Managing director Mike Padgham said: “I am very grateful to all the residents, families and staff who have been kind enough to join in the filming of these important programmes.”

Saint Cecilia’s on the road at community events Staff have been out and about in recent weeks, representing Saint Cecilia’s at a number of community events.

We attended Scarborough Job Fair at the Grand Hotel, and the Volunteering Fair and Employability Fair, both at CU Scarborough.

We are also looking to strengthen our links with local colleges, through placements with CU Scarborough, Scarborough TEC and Scarborough Sixth Form College.

Save the New partnership with Alzheimer’s dates... Society to help people with dementia This year Care Home Open Day will be held on Friday 28th June for the care home and Normanby House and on Saturday 29th June for the nursing home, in conjunction with their summer fair.

More details in the next edition of feedback.

Saint Cecilia’s is pleased to announce a new partnership with Alzheimer’s Society Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale.

The charity will be providing us with practical dementia advice and support for people with dementia and/or their carers.

Imogen Wormald, Dementia Support Worker for Alzheimer’s Society, will be working with all the centres in the group and attending relatives’ meetings to share details of support available, offer

Imogen Wormald support and guidance to residents, relatives and staff and will hold support sessions at the day care centre once a month, offering private

appointments to anyone who may need one.

No problem is too small and the charity is able to signpost people to a range of local support in the area.

Alzheimer’s Society also runs free carers courses as well as community-based services such as Dementia Cafes, Singing for the Brain and Side by Side, a 1:1 service for people with dementia to maintain hobbies and interests.

Saint Cecilia’s are proud to support The Care Workers Charity, the only charity in the UK solely representing care workers. It was founded in 2009 with the objective of helping current and former care workers with one-off hardship grants.

Loss of a loved one, the break-up of a relationship or an illness are facts of life; challenges that most of us will face at some point; it is in those circumstances that CWC is able to provide support.

In 2018 The Care Workers Charity awarded over £150,000 in grants to almost 400 care workers – nearly four times as many people as in 2017. In 2019 they expect to award £250,000 to those working within the social care sector. Rachel’s story ...

Rachel had worked with a home care agency for 6 years caring for vulnerable adults in her local community. The connections she built with clients and the difference in the lives of those she cared for was the most rewarding aspect of her job. Rachel's world was turned upside down when her son had an accident, leaving him in hospital for two weeks. Money wasn’t Rachel's priority at the time, but lacking a steady income meant she was struggling to keep top of her bills and feed herself.

"The Care Workers Charity awarded me a grant to help keep up with essential living costs and travel arrangements to the hospital. It meant that I avoided slipping into debt and could concentrate on Riley rather than worrying about the money. The charity helped me through the roughest time of my life."

We visited Rachel and Riley and were pleased to hear that not only is Riley well on his way to making a full recovery, but that he is the star player in his local football team.

New opening hours at day care centre New opening hours have been introduced at Saint Cecilia’s Day Care centre to offer more opportunity to enjoy the service.

The centre is now open longer each day, from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

And it is also now open on Saturdays, from 10am to 3pm.

Thanks to Graham for a great night out!

A big thank you to Graham Pryce for celebrating his 30 years at the nursing home with a night out at the Corporation Club.

Graham very kindly hosted an evening of entertainment including magic, music and a ‘This is Your Life’ treat for Managing Director Mike Padgham, who is also celebrating 30 years in social care. Mike returned the compliment by doing a ‘This is Your Life’ on Graham!

Well done and thank you, Graham for 30 years’ of excellent service to the home!

An apology to Dale Bowman Our apologies to Dale Bowman after we got some of the facts wrong in a report in the last edition of feedback.

In our article on Dale taking up the post of Care Home Manager we incorrectly stated that Dale had joined Saint Cecilia’s in 2005 as a care assistant and then worked his way up. In fact, Dale started working

He joined Saint Cecilia’s care home in 2005 as a care home supervisor and helped support Jo Edmond. We are happy to set the record straight and apologise once again to Dale for the mistake.

Charlie and Lorna celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary A celebration was held at the care home to mark the diamond wedding anniversary of our lovely residents Charlie and Lorna Coates.

The pair met at a dance at Bridlington Spa and were married in 1958. They lived all their married life in Thwing, near Driffield, where Charlie was born.

Charlie first worked on a farm and then went to work on the roads with the council. Before she got married, Lorna was a bridal seamstress at Rowntree's in Scarborough. After she got married she continued to do sewing jobs for family and friends, including bridesmaid dresses, curtains and alterations.

Charlie was always a keen gardener – and still looks after a little garden box here at the care home. Lorna used to play the organ for Thwing Church.

The couple have two daughters, Jayne and Avril, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis is in the building!

Residents at the nursing home loved it when Elvis called in to sing a selection of his most famous hits!

Elvis, aka Simon Walls, kept the residents entertained with a fine performance during an afternoon which also included an Elvis Presley quiz.
