hen customers come from all over the country and make a point of visiting you whenever they’re in Auckland, you know you must be doing something right. That’s been the experience of Sean and Debbie Keys, who own two thriving La Porchetta restaurants in Parnell and Henderson. ‘We have regular customers from Wellington and other cities who tell us they’d love to see La Porchetta open there. This franchise has so much to offer.’ La Porchetta is a modern Italian casual dining restaurant renowned for its tasty pizza, pasta and traditional dishes made from high quality ingredients. Founded in Melbourne in 1985, there are now 46 restaurants throughout Australia and New Zealand. ‘In traditional Italian families, some of life’s happiest moments take place around the table,’ explains CEO Sara Pantaleo. ‘At La Porchetta we strive to recreate this wonderful atmosphere between our families and friends at every meal. It’s not just about the food; it’s the experience that keeps customers coming back.’

La Porchetta has also been fast to respond to changing trends, with home delivery and collection providing three income streams to maximise the potential of each market and the return on each franchisee’s investment. Debbie says that keeping up with the trends is vital. ‘Hospitality is such a fickle industry; you can go from flavour of the month to the complete opposite so fast. Having a great franchise to help you spot what’s coming and react quickly makes all the difference.’

The best thing we’ve ever done

Sean and Debbie know what they’re talking about. They’ve been in the business since 2008, when they put their house on the line to purchase La Porchetta in Parnell. ‘It’s probably the best thing we’ve ever done, and 11 years on that restaurant is run by our daughter Tammara and is highly successful. In 2013, we became owners of the Henderson outlet, too, which has a much bigger floor area,’ explains Debbie. Joining La Porchetta was an informed decision. With a background in baking and hospital care, Sean had always fancied owning a café or restaurant. Debbie, however, knew the pitfalls, having been working in the business since she was 16. After doing an accounting course she moved into restaurant management, and when she started working with La Porchetta one thing stood out. ‘The finances were far more steady than other restaurants, and the franchise offered a stability that you don’t get with stand-alone businesses, so we were comfortable that it was a good proposition – and so it was. ‘That’s not to say you don’t have to work hard to make the most of the opportunity – this is a full-time, seven-day commitment, not a lifestyle business, but if you love hospitality then La Porchetta will help you create a successful and sustainable business. ‘The great strength of this franchise from our perspective is that the franchisor is very responsive,’ Debbie continues. ‘We can pick up the phone at any point and speak to the CEO, we have a franchise advisory council that is always listened to, and there’s a flat fee rather than a percentage so the more we sell, the more we make.’
