One of the most important lessons you will learn in all of the wildlife photography is to understand your subject. Understanding your subject involves knowing how your subject reacts to movement, reacts to being watched, in what region will your subject be more free and natural, and how to protect yourself if your subject decides to attack you.

Immediately we see a bird that catches our attention, we just begin to shoot in continuous mode to capture the bird before it takes off. But, bird photography is more than just the subject, it involves the background, the light, and the story behind every shot.

And he advises that you should try doing the same, you’ll find out that most times, images produced from this method are better and tell a better story than images produced from shooting at sight.

Be watchful of your Camera Settings Every environment is not the same. Some environments might be alike, but they are not the same. Lots of things differ in environments like the lightning and the depth of field. Even birds differ from each other, they differ by color, brightness, shape, size, and other features.

There is no single camera setting that can capture every environment, every bird, or every time of the day. Patrick Ryan McCann says “Always check your camera settings and ensure you set the camera to capture your current environment effectively”

Get Close to Your Subject and Take Your Time One of the parts of bird photography is getting the full texture of the bird in the subject, and you can’t get the full texture of the bird from miles away from your subject. Getting close to your subject helps to eliminate excess zooming into your frame. Excess zoom will bring a lot of haze into your image.

Getting close to your subject should not be done in a haste. Most birds, no matter how calm and relaxed they are, will shy away with sudden movement around them. There is a need to move cautiously toward the birds and not scare them off.

Most amateur bird photographers make the mistake of shooting a few images of a particular bird and moving away almost immediately to find new birds to capture. Instead of rushing your photographs, Patrick advised that you take your time, spend time with each bird, shoot several photos of the same bird and see the wonders that you’ve created.
