James Musinguzi I hope... to go back to school and continue building my technical skills. I hope to have my family join me here, and one day buy a house and start a family of my own.

Democratic Republic of Congo - Rwanda - Kansas City Refugee Journey I fled the Democratic Republic of Congo when I was only a baby. My family left because it was unsafe. I lived in Rwanda in a refugee camp with my mom, dad, and sister until I was 25. In 2017, I received approval to come to the United States. I left my family behind and arrived in Kansas City by myself. Within a month of arriving in the United States, I had a job working on engines for Waste Management. I was very happy to be supporting myself. In January of 2018, I had an accident and lost use of my left hand, and I could not continue working at my job. Heather helped me work through the trauma and fears I had after my accident. I was so overwhelmed that I did not agree to have surgery for several months. With JVS' help, I was able to get stronger. My social worker helped find resources to pay my bills while I was unable to work. I was able to go back to work and save money to buy my first car.

JVS Impact While I was waiting for surgery, JVS helped me find English classes. I don't need an interpreter to meet with JVS anymore! While I was recovering from my surgery, JVS helped me stay hopeful.

Kansas City I enjoy spending time with my friends and other people in the Congolese community. When I have free time, I like to be outside either playing soccer or enjoying the warmer weather. There is a lot to do here, and I enjoy being part of it.
