Goodlet, RN, pediatrics. “We have developed a rapport with some of our patients with recurrent admissions. Patients and families see the same faces of the doctors and nurses time and time again.” Goodlet adds that if a parent has a concern, having in-house pediatricians makes it easy to address questions early. “Parents often tell us that it’s very comforting to know that a physician can come right away, even to answer a question or re-explain the need for a test,” Goodlet adds. “I often see physicians following up and visiting patients multiple times a day to ensure their proper care and comfort.”

St. Louis Children’s Hospital at Progress West HealthCare Center

Round-the-Clock Pediatrics To meet the needs of young families in the area, Progress West HealthCare Center provides the same level of general pediatric expertise a parent would expect to find at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. These BJC hospitals have partnered to bring pediatric physicians along with the highest level of pediatric nursing care to patients in the emergency department, inpatient unit and birthing center. “Parents should know Progress West provides a board-certified pediatrician 24/7,” says Casey Pruitt, MD, director of pediatric hospitalist medicine. “If a child under age 18 needs care, he or she will always be seen by a Washington University, St. Louis Children’s Hospital-affiliated physician. All pediatricians, like myself, practice at both St. Louis Children’s and Progress West. Even more important for parents to know is that we use the same standard of care, same treatment protocols and the same words to talk to families and patients at both hospitals.”

Complete Pediatric Emergency Department Team When a child comes to the Emergency Department at Progress West, that child will always have access to a complete pediatric team. According to Dr. Pruitt, the Children’s presence at Progress West brings academic medicine to St. Charles county families and immediate access to subspecialists. “In many cases, we can pick up the

“Your ED staff was great about building a rapport with my 5-year-old son, carefully choosing words when communicating with me in front of him, and performing the least scary tests first. The cartoon bugs on the exam room walls were a nice touch. We even spent a few minutes discussing what kinds of bugs they were and why on earth they were wearing shoes.” --Mary Murphy- mother of pediatric patient at PWHC phone, consult with our colleagues and implement care at Progress West — without having to transfer the child,” said Dr. Pruitt. “However, if a higher level of care is needed, Progress West emergency physicians begin communication immediately with the St. Louis Children’s Hospital so the care is seamless.” If an appointment is needed with a specialist following discharge, Progress West staff will coordinate appointments for patients and families. Nursing is another significant part of the pediatric team at Progress West. Nurses are pediatric trained and many come from St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Pediatrictrained nurses staff the emergency department and the pediatric inpatient unit.

Inpatient Unit Treats Toddlers to Teens Not only do Children’s pediatricians staff the emergency department at Progress West, they provide follow-up inpatient care if a child is admitted to the hospital. “Children come to Progress West for surgery, to repair a broken bone, or to remove tonsils or an appendix. Many come for infusion therapy. Respiratory illnesses, such as the flu or asthma, are the most common reasons for hospitalization,” says Lynn

Every pediatric patient at Progress West has a private room, and many are decorated just for kids. These rooms also provide a pull-out bed for parents who want to stay overnight with their children. The emergency department is equipped with toys and games for all ages.

Safety Stop As an added benefit, Children’s child safety experts are available for free consultations at Safety Stop in O’Fallon. Parents can come to Safety Stop at Progress West to get their child’s car seat checked, get their child fitted for a bike helmet, or to learn about home safety. Appointments are required and available by calling 636.344.KIDS (5437).

Progress West HealthCare Center is located near the intersection of I-64/40 and Hwy K in O’Fallon. For more information, visit ProgressWest.org.

Enjoy Eagle Watching

t age 18, I saw a poster of a majestic looking eagle, wings spread, a mountain range behind and a bottom caption ... “All Americans are born free but many sell their liberty cheap. For those who don’t, the Eagle is their symbol.” Eagle watchers are best served by cruising 14 areas along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers from the Chain of Rocks bridge to a point a little north of Louisiana, Missouri. You’ll want to wear layered clothing accented with binoculars.

Plan your viewing time to accommodate the eagles feeding schedules, usually between the hours of sunrise and 11 AM. Be sure to look for what veteran eagle watchers call “baseballs in the trees” (due to the eagles white head),

Bring an extra dose of patience. Eagles move about in their own time. Also, new eagle watchers should be aware of the Eagle Protection Act in combination with the Criminal Fines Improvement Act of 1987 prohibiting possession of anything eagle, from a dead body to a mere feather. Instead, just listen for the shrill, high pitched, twittering cry eagles make and be happy with viewing or picture taking. Photo enthusiasts are encouraged to use a tripod, telephoto lens and a film rating of 400 ASA, or the equivalent with a digital camera. Eagles can also be viewed 363 days a year, 8 to 5 at the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park, Missouri as well as the Alton Visitor’s Center in Alton, Illinois. By Joe Palermo

A New Year - A New You!

Start the Year with a Fresh Perspective

I

t’s 2013 and chances are you are a totally new person this year. Without your having to do a thing, your body has been busy at work, regenerating your skin and cells. Biologists say that the human body completely renews itself every seven years. Think of it; you can divide your age by seven; your body is much younger than your years! This New Year’s Day you may step into the world a brand new you. Vow to take care of your new self with these ideas to keep you looking your best…until the next you arrives.

Star t at the Top On average, we lose 50-100 strands of hair each day. Illness, pregnancy, medication, stress and other factors can vary the amount. So even though we have around 100,000 (blondes have the most, then brunettes, then redheads), our heads have fresh hair strands all the time. Surveys find that many women keep the same basic hairstyle most of their lives. We may color it or shorten it a bit, but our friends from high school would know us instantly. Hair is all tied up with our self-image and self-esteem. If you’ve ever had a bad color application or too-short bangs, you know it’s true.

But be brave. A good hair salon can give you a cut and style and color that will make you smile. Studio 1 Hair Design in O’Fallon is devoted to offering the best hair cutting, hair styling, hair coloring and customer service experience possible. With three Certified Redken Hair Colorists on staff, this is the place to go for perfect, professional color application. They are now offering a $20 discount on color for new customers. See their website for details!

with any chemical purchase, as well as 20% off your Mirabella purchase. Treat Yourself to Massage Your muscles will be supporting you all year. What better way to thank them than to start a regular schedule of massage appointments. From enhancing immunity and lessening depression to increasing flexibility and reducing aches and pains, massage will benefit your new self in dozens of ways. It also helps promote tissue regeneration— that means a new you, again, in a few years! Choose from the many massage businesses in your area; ask for recommendations from your doctor or from friends. Spa WingHaven is waiting to relax and pamper you. Their menu of massage therapy choices will make you drool and they offer numerous services to make you feel like a new woman- or man.

The Skin You’re In Your new skin is vulnerable to all kinds of dangers; sun, pollution, stress, poor care. If the face you see in the mirror could use a little pampering, head to your nearest spa or salon that offers facials and other skin treatments. A spa facial is great for your skin, and the pampering and serene environment that goes hand-in-hand with a spa facial is also a huge benefit. Your treatment can relieve the stress of everyday life and let you relax for a bit. Then, find a makeup you love; one that will protect your new skin and make you feel beautiful. Salon Identity in O’Fallon is proud to carry MIRABELLA cosmetic products and is offering a complimentary application

Exercise - Keep it Simple Keep your new body strong this year with some type of regular exercise. Walking is terrific; gym membership keeps many on a routine. Do little things this year to keep yourself fit; park farther away from the store’s entrance, take the stairs, bike the Katy Trail, exercise while watching 22

reality TV. Or try something new: Luminescence Salon and Spa in Warrenton just opened a Wellness Center to enhance their top-notch salon services. Here you can enjoy a variety of group classes ranging from Yoga, Range of Motion, Zumba, Zumba Toning, and Turbo Kick. HAVE A GREAT YEAR, NEW YOU! Step out this January with a fresh attitude and find ways to fill the next twelve months with happy, healthy and NEW experiences. By Robin Garrison Leach
