St. Louis’

ROCK ‘n connection ROLL © Michael Grafman 2015. All rights reserved • mrginvests@gmail.com

Michael: What is your connection to St. Louis, in your words, with the people, the industry, and our city?

Mark: Born and raised in St. Louis. Have been very fortunate to spend my entire radio career in town. I have some listeners hang with me the entire 43 years. I have been doing talk radio for the last 5 years and it is a hoot to talk one on one with a bunch of these listeners. Charlie Daniels visiting KSHE in Crestwood MO, 1978. Standing on the left, Shelley Grafman and Charlie Daniels and Mark Klose on the right with his big black cowboy hat!

Meet Mark Klose Michael Grafman interviews St. Louis’ legendary Broadcaster

I

f you've lived in St. Louis the last 40+ years, I am sure you have heard him on the radio. For almost 40 years, we've been blessed to have one of the most entertaining disc jockeys here in St.

Louis. I've known Mark Klose for over 40 years and am pleased to share his connection. I chatted with him via emails, but of course, and asked him some questions about his rock n roll connection to St. Louis.

Michael: Mark, please share with St Louis how you get started in broadcasting. Mark Klose: I started at KSHE in 1972. My first big job was digging a drainage ditch behind the building. I have to say it was a hell of a ditch, if I say so myself.

Michael: What is your most memorable broadcasting experience in St. Louis? Mark: Being involved with the KSHE kite flying contest back in 1975. Charlie Daniels and Rush on stage with 80,000 fans at Aviation field in Forest Park. Michael: Who was most instrumental in St. Louis in helping you build your career?

Mark: Hang with my wife Fern. My daughter lives in LA so we try and get out there pretty often. I try and get out every day for a pretty long walk. No headphones no music. Great way to let everything kinda air out.

n

Michael: What are some of your favorite bands? KSHE's Free Concert @ 66 Drive-In Movie Theater next to the ol' KSHE studios, 1976. Mark Klose's back is to us on the left as Shelley Grafman is center stage at the mic.

Mark: Well there is The Beatles and then everybody else. Eagles, Journey and Eric Clapton. I could go on and on. Almost forgot Perry Como. Michael: Your views on radio today and where its heading? Mark: I would like to see play lists open up a little. More selections. Let the jocks ramble a little bit.

KSHE's 10th Anniversary Birthday Party Concert at Kiel Auditorium, 1976. (L-R) John Ulett, Shelley Grafman with arms up, and Mark Klose center stage!

Mark: Shelley Grafman. He gave a lot of great jocks their start in radio. Put you on the air…..sink or swim! Michael: You keep quite busy outside of radio, tell St. Louis about your band. Mark: Klose’ nuff plays around town at all kinds of events. School picnics, clubs and just about any

he Budweiser Taste of St. Louis was recently named readers’ choice “Best Food Event” in St. Louis Magazine’s A-List for the third straight year and will again be held at the Chesterfield Amphitheater in Central Park and Chesterfield Village.

Now in its eleventh year, the Budweiser Taste of St. Louis welcomes five-star Celebrity Chef Grant MacPherson on Saturday, September 19. Chef MacPherson’s career spans five continents and four decades. He has cooked adventurous fi?ve-star food, developed menus, designed and run kitchens and built top-notch teams at such iconic institutions as the Ra?es Hotel in Singapore, Bellagio Las Vegas, Wynn Las Vegas, Wynn Macau, several Regent Hotels and Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton Big Island, and Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados. He also collaborated with the late Steve Jobs on dining facilities on Apple’s campus. Chef MacPherson will be showcasing his culinary skills on the Goose Island School of Cooking Stage. Admission is free. New to the 2015 Budweiser Taste of St. Louis is the Goose Island School of Cooking, powered by L'Ecole Culinaire. Local, regional and national chefs – along with beverage experts – will host demonstrations designed to be both fun and educational. Guests will see everything from special cooking techniques to food and beverage pairings to can’t-miss culinary presentations – all in an intimate setting designed to enhance the overall experience. A full lineup for the Goose Island School of Cooking will be announced soon. The Goose Island School of Cooking, powered by L’Ecole Culinaire, is sponsored, in part, by Feast Magazine. The ever-popular 314 Hot Sauce Restaurant Row this year features more than 35 restaurants located from downtown to St. Charles, including past favorites like Annie Gunn’s, Drunken Fish and EdgeWild and newcomers that include Dalie’s (the latest in the Pappy’s family), Walnut Grille, Ices Plain & Fancy in Tower Grove, and Prasino. The event has helped raise more than $350,000 in charitable donations to benefit organizations such as Food Outreach, St. Patrick Center, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Blues Society, Benton Park Neighborhood Association and Soulard Restoration Group, just to name a few! Some of this year’s fundraising and awarenessraising events for nonprofits include the announcement on-site of the recipient of a $2,500 donation from Farmers Insurance and a “friendly” culinary battle between the Monarch Fire Department and the Chesterfield Police Department on the Stella Artois Culinary Stage benefitting Backstoppers.
