HALF TERM FUN FOR EVERYONE AT THE COMMUNITY HUB

The community hub at The Casson Centre on Rodway Road threw open its doors for the half term week in style!

On Monday 13th February, the room was packed with children and their parents as they took part in Valentines themed arts and crafts There was a lot of LOVE in the air with cards, wreaths and other crafts were made Over 40 people crammed into the centre to enjoy the warm offering including tea, coffee, snacks and a good old fashioned natter with friends, old and new!

On Valentines Day, the hub offered up some air clay modelling which went down a treat with the kids and even the adults! This messy activity provided a perfect present for mums and dads from their child!

On Wednesday 15th February, over 40 people packed into the hub again to take part in arts and crafts. Facepainting with Linda went down a real treat with everyone getting involved!

Thursday and Friday were the days when the teddy bears had their picnics! Over 80 residents attended the final two days of the hub’s half term activities with a traditional teddy bear’s picnic taking place! There was bunting galore and a backdrop for themed pictures! Everyone had gotten right into the spirit and loved being part of something special.

Over the week, Isobel, Roland and their team of trusty volunteers had given out over 170 free lunches for all residents who have attended as well as plenty of cups of tea and friendly chat!

On the successful week, Cllrs Isobel and Roland Walker had this to say, ‘It has been so heart-warming to share this week with so many local people The cost of living crisis has hit us all but in true Patchway style, the community has once again come together and united. This week has been a lot of fun and we can’t wait to keep our community hub going as the beating heart of Patchway’

What do Local Councils and Councillors Do?

Local (parish and town) councils and councillors make a massive difference to local people's quality of life. They are passionate about their communities and seek to make a change to help improve their residents' lives

Local councils run numerous services, depending on the size of the council. Many you will see day-to-day, but some are less known. These include introducing solar panels, setting up dementia-friendly groups, organising community buses, creating neighbourhood plans, implementing suitable housing, establishing youth projects, managing allotments and open spaces, maintaining footpaths, public seating and litter bins

Councillors are elected to represent the local community, so you must either live or work in the council area.

Becoming a councillor is a rewarding experience as you will be able to make a change in your community to help improve residents' lives A councillor’s role can include developing strategies and plans for the area, helping with problems and ideas, representing the community, working with other local community groups, decision making and reviewing decisions and talking to the community about their needs and what the council is doing.

FIRST LOOK AT NEW BRISTOL ZOO AS IMAGES AND ANIMAL PLAN ARE REVEALED

Exciting CGI images of the new Bristol Zoo have been released, revealing that visitors will be immersed in nature from the moment they step foot inside

Pictures of the first phase of the new zoo, which will be developed at Bristol Zoological Society’s Wild Place Project site, show plans for a Central African Forests area, home to the Western lowland gorilla troop from Bristol Zoo Gardens; a conservation learning campus, where visitors will be able to see scientists up close at work; and a stunning new wild entrance

The new zoo will be home to some of the world’s most threatened species to reflect the vital conservation work that Bristol Zoological Society does with species and habitats around the world

Along with the Critically Endangered gorilla troop, the new Central African Forests area will be home to several Endangered and Critically Endangered species, including a new group of cherry-crowned Mangabey monkeys, African grey parrots, slender-snouted crocodiles and several extremely rare species of West African fish, which visitors will be able to see in a new underwater viewing area. Images also show plans for a new conservation campus at the heart of the zoo, which will have purpose-built facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate conservation students to study, along with a conservation medicine centre, providing modern veterinary facilities to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare.

From the moment they arrive at the zoo, visitors will enter an immersive wild experience. A brand new entrance area is planned, including a new red panda exhibit as well as updated facilities including a gift shop and restaurant

Dr Justin Morris, Chief Executive of Bristol Zoological Society, said: “We’re excited to share these images of the new Bristol Zoo. They show how animals will have the space to thrive and future generations will come face-to-face with amazing animals in nature, as well as learn more about our charity’s critical conservation and education work, to protect at-risk species and habitats.”

Bristol Zoological Society has also shared more details about the animals that will be part of the first phase of the new Bristol Zoo

The Society has developed an animal species plan, so that its resources are focused on 76 species that are most in need of protection, to meet its mission of Saving Wildlife Together

A number of tools were used to create the species plan including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which produces the Red List of globally threatened species

In the first phase, around 80 per cent of the species at the new Bristol Zoo will be linked to the Society’s conservation programmes around the world, living in spaces more closely reflecting their natural habitats

The Society’s target by 2035, its bicentenary year, is for 90% of species to be linked to its conservation work – with more species planned to arrive over a number of years.

Bristol Zoological Society carries out conservation projects in four continents across the world, and species under threat in these areas are also part of the plan, in addition to the 76 species planned for the first phase of the new zoo

Brian Zimmerman, Director of Conservation and Science at Bristol Zoological Society, said: “We’ve developed our animal species plan so that we can really focus our resources on animals that most need our help, and maximise the impact we make to the conservation of wildlife ”

50 species will be moving from Bristol Zoo Gardens. Animals moving from Bristol Zoo Gardens to the new Bristol Zoo at Wild Place Project include: the Western lowland gorillas, blue-eyed black lemurs, Polynesian tree snails, Mindanao bleeding heart dove, Tarictic hornbill, Socorro dove, European turtle dove, turquoise gecko, lemur leaf frog and Corfu killifish.

New species will also then be moving to the new Bristol Zoo from other zoos and aquariums around the world as part of wellestablished, cooperative breeding programmes These include: two black rhinoceros, North African red necked ostrich and Grevy’s zebra.

Construction of the new Bristol Zoo is expected to begin in 2024 and will be phased over a number of years with Wild Place Project remaining open throughout.

NEWS FROM YOUR MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT JACK LOPRESTI MP

This month in our local area I have been able to revisit some of the fantastic aerospace and worldleading defence companies we have in or area.

I visited Aeralis to catch up on progress with their modular jet which could replace the Hawk, Red Arrows jet, as the trainer aircraft for the RAF among other potential uses. Their planned jet is a radical new concept and a world leading modular design with the potential to be a major British export which could be used in militaries around the world This will create jobs and deliver ondemand operational air support services as part of the future of our Air Force

I also visited GKN Global Technology Centre in Filton and this time met with their Vice President, Sameer Savani, where we discussed technological innovation and sustainable development We also discussed STEM engagement with local schools and colleges and their apprenticeships programme The GTC is also working with several partners across the region, helping to sustain our area as an international centre of excellence in aerospace and technology.

In Westminster, at Prime Minister’s Questions, I asked the Prime Minister to join me in paying tribute to everyone who works at MOD Defence Equipment and Support, Abbeywood, for all that they do, especially in helping the Ukrainians get the kit they need to fight for their freedom The Prime Minister joined me in paying tribute to MOD DE&S and confirmed £24 billion in additional defence spending as well as his commitment to more equipment being manufactured in the UK.

In Parliament, I continue to champion and advocate apprenticeships. The opportunities they bring and the contribution they can make to enhancing social mobility will ensure we maintain the knowledge, skills and expertise, not only for good quality jobs in our area, but will protect and enhance our sovereign defence manufacturing capability

I met apprentices from EDF Energy, Assystem and Vulcain Engineering during Nuclear Week in Parliament and discussed the vital contributions they are making to preserve our energy security. I was delighted to host a seminar in Westminster with Enterprise UK, where we discussed Enterprise’s plans to provide apprenticeships and training to our Armed Forces’ veterans I also hosted Airbus Helicopters where I was able to meet with some of their fantastic apprentices

Last week I was re-elected as the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Sovereign Defence Manufacturing Capability. The first inquiry will be on the impact of the war in Ukraine on the UK's defence manufacturing resilience The conflict in Ukraine will clearly have an impact on our local defence manufacturing

Earlier this month I met with Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury to discuss the company’s ongoing and increasing investment into Filton, and also attended the ADS Annual Dinner, which brings together the aerospace, defence, security and space sectors I was hosted by Lockheed Martin and spent the evening explaining to them the great merits and advantages of investing in defence manufacturing jobs in our area

CHARLTON WOOD PRIMARY ACADEMY

Across the school, we have been learning about staying safe online during Safer Internet Day We have thought about all of the great things about the internet but also some of the things we need to be careful of such as seeing things we do not like, hearing things in games that are not appropriate or not to speak to people we do not know The children have been learning the SMART rules for internet safety and how you can make sure that you are safe. The children have really been enjoying this and come up with some great ideas and suggestions of how to be safe online.

In EYFS, we have been learning about how to be safe online We talked about who we can tell if we feel unsafe when on the internet. We enjoyed painting pictures of people who keep us safe We also explored safe iPad apps and enjoyed designing our own iPad games.

KS1 children learned that it is important to stay safe online by keeping personal information safe and that people you do not know on the internet are strangers and are not always who they say they are They also learned that it is important to tell a trusted adult if they feel unsafe or worried online. They listened to two stories about characters who needed some help when using the internet and discussed and role played what they could do to make safe decisions. Finally they created posters to inform others of how to stay safe when using the internet

Year 3 and 4 discussed how they use the internet and how they can be safe online They thought about times we have been upset by something online and how we dealt with it. They learned the Childnet SMART rules and discussed which adults they could speak to if they were worried by something online. The children thought about what information should be shared online and the importance of keeping themselves safe by using an unidentifiable username and only talking to people they know in real life

PATCHWAY COMMUNITY CENTRE

Community Pantomime 2023

This year they put on a performance of Robin Hood and very professional it was too They write their own plays and pantomimes and have almost professional scenery, lighting and sound systems, it was very very good

They performed on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening and were finished exactly on time so our local residents were not disturbed by late night traffic. All in all an excellent arrangement; they are returning in July/August with a “Who dun it” play, which we are looking forward to

Cllr Toby Savage, leader of the council, said: “These are tough financial times for the council, as they are for all our residents and businesses But I am pleased that we are able to set a budget that builds on our hard work in previous years and which continues to deliver on our priorities for residents and businesses across South Gloucestershire.”

“The council will continue to invest tens of millions of pounds in local schools to ensure record attainment levels continue and take decisive action to tackle the climate crisis. We will build vital public transport infrastructure and invest in local high streets to ensure that our significant achievements over the past few years continue ”

WEST OF ENGLAND COMBINED AUTHORITY

Local groups are being encouraged to apply for new cash to support South Glos bees

Metro Mayor Dan Norris will announce £500,000 of funding for projects that support the region’s pollinator superheroes as part of his commitment to make the West of England the bee and pollinator capital of the UK (this Wednesday 22 February at 11am at Oldbury on Severn C of E Primary School, Church Lane, Oldbury-on-Severn, Bristol BS35 1QG).

Schools, volunteer and community groups, sports clubs, faith groups and other bee-loving groups can apply for grants of between £10,000 and £100,000 Applicants must show how they will expand and protect bee habitats, for example by installing "bug hotels", upgrading a neglected local green space or planting fruit trees or wildflower meadows The best projects will be selected for funding by an expert panel.

The half-a-million cash boost will build on the Mayor’s successful scheme launched last year that has funded a dozen projects including a mini orchard, Pollinator Trail and outdoor classrooms In total over 220,000 square metres of land across the region has been transformed so far thanks to the Mayor’s scheme to serve the West’s vital pollinator friends

On a visit to Oldbury on Seven Church of England Primary School, who received a £17,000 grant last year, Metro Mayor Dan Norris said: “I’m proud to announce that my West of England Mayoral Authority is investing even more in bees It’s fantastic to be doing so at Oldbury-on-Severn School's outdoor classroom because the pupils here know bees are bee-rilliant I’ve made bees a priority as they’re vital to making sure our crops are pollinated and we have food to eat year-round Whether it is planting blooming wildflower meadows in parks or installing bee-friendly green roofs on community buildings, my message to all South Glos pollinator pal groups is - get applying! This is an important step as make the West of England Mayoral region a force to bee reckoned with when it comes to supporting our region’s pollinator superheroes”

Oldbury-on-Severn Primary school are using their Metro Mayor grant to plant 1000m2 of blooming wildflower meadows bursting with colour on their school grounds and build a brand-new ‘outdoor classroom’ for 60 lessons per year for students to learn how to look after the region’s food heroes The classroom will be open to community groups like ‘Forest Tots’ toddler group, St Arilda’s Church Community, Oldbury Village Community and others

Who can apply?

Volunteer, community groups, and NGOs

Town councils, parish councils and unitary authorities

Schools and education organisations

Youth groups, sports clubs, churches

Not for Profit groups managing community spaces

The closing date for applications is 19 April 2023 To apply visit: https://www westofengland-ca gov uk/what-we-do/environment/beeand-pollinator-capital/bee-bold-pollinator-fund/

CHANGES TO BUS SERVICES

Bus operator First West of England has today announced a significant increase in the number of buses operating in the region from Sunday 2nd April.

The changes will add over 3,000 hours of bus journeys to routes across the region every week. The operator’s buses will travel over a million and a half extra miles every year to give people more opportunities to travel sustainably As part of this, First West of England will be reinstating over 1,600 hours of buses in Bristol every week, following the temporary suspension of some journeys in November due to driver shortages.

The increased frequencies and punctuality improvements represent a significant investment from First West of England in service improvements In addition, the West of England Combined Authority and North Somerset Council are contributing extensive Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) funding to enhance a number of key routes across the region The combined package includes additional buses into Bristol City Centre from Kingswood, Downend, Staple Hill, Whitchurch and Keynsham; Thornbury and Bristol City Centre; Twerton and Bath City Centre; and between Midsomer Norton and Bath City Centre

Despite the improvements to many services, passenger numbers are still down by around 20% on pre-pandemic levels and although many services are showing good growth, a very small number have shown no signs of attracting sufficient users to cover their costs As a result, services 23, 47 and 91 will no longer operate from Sunday 2nd April.

Doug Claringbold, Managing Director of First West of England, said: “These new timetables will significantly increase the service we offer our customers and I’m confident that our investment in new technology will also continue to improve punctuality We will also be reinstating journeys in Bristol that we had to temporarily suspend last year, as we are starting to see the effect of our major driver recruitment and retention campaign.

We’re delighted that the West of England Combined Authority and North Somerset Council's successful BSIP award means significant investment in a number of important routes, which together with our own investment in our commercial network will bring improvements for many customers

We would like to thank our customers for their patience and for continuing to be considerate to our drivers during what has been a difficult period ”

Forthcoming timetables are currently available on First's timetables page at https://www firstbus co uk/bristol-bath-and-west/planjourney/timetables?date=2023-04-02 with print-at-home PDF timetables and route maps for each service available soon.

These changes include:

75 - a revised timetable, with the section of route between Hengrove Park and Hengrove Depot withdrawn.

m1 - Timetable revised, no change to route

m4 - Timetable revised, no change to route.

Y6 - Timetable revised and minor route change The service will operate via Monks Park Avenue instead of Dorian Road to and from Southmead Hospital

MENDIP VALE MEDICAL GROUP

SELF-HEALTH KIOSK AT MENDIP VALE MEDICAL PRACTICE

WHAT IS IT? HOW DO I USE IT?

The Self-Health Kiosk is a screening kiosk designed to let patients take control of their health Available in all surgery waiting rooms, the kiosk is a handy bit of equipment that enables patients to take vital sign measurements and answer standard health checks independently from a clinician. Whether you need to take your blood pressure, height, weight, or/and health assessments, the kiosks are free to use and do not require an appointment - visit the surgery and use the kiosk whenever it is convenient for you Simply log on to the kiosk using your full name and date of birth and select the assessment you wish to complete. Following the step-by-step instructions on the screen, patients can complete assessments for a range of health checks, including diabetes, menopause, asthma, blood pressure, oral contraception, and anxiety, just to name a few.

Once the patient has submitted their assessment, the results are saved straight to their medical record ready for a clinician to review. If you require any assistance using the kiosk, please ask a member of our friendly team and they will be happy to help

The Health Kiosk enables you to spend more valuable time with your clinician during your appointment. Clinicians can review results before you arrive, giving you more time to ask questions, discuss treatment, and complete further advanced tests if required The assessments take no longer than 10 minutes to complete and can be used anytime within surgery opening hours (Monday –Friday 8 am-6:30 pm)

The Self-Health Kiosk can also take assessments for:

General Health Check

·New Patient Health Check

Asthma

·COPD

·Physical Activity assessment (GPPAQ)

Eating Disorder Assessment (scoff)

·Phobia Assessment (IAPT)

Mood self-assessment (PHQ9)

It’s important that all our patients update the surgery on their smoking status as it may help with other medical conditions This is easily and quickly done on the Self-Health Kiosk under the General Health Check questionnaire. If you would like information on how to stop smoking, please speak to reception where they can book you in for an appointment with one of our Health Care Assistants.

For more information regarding the Self-Health Kiosk including how to use video, search on the Mendip Vale website
