THE MAYOR OF PATCHWAY SWITCHES ON CHRISTMAS
The Mayor of Patchway, Cllr Dayley Lawrence along with over a thousand residents and some festive friends switched on Christmas in Patchway. On Friday 25th November 2022, Patchway Town Council held their first ever Christmas Light switch on event at Holy Family Church and it was a great success
The evening started with over thirty local stall holders gathered inside a marquee and the parish hall at the church, all offering something festive for our residents There were crafts, community information, treats for pets as well as handcrafted items! There were also food and drinks galore as Patchway really got into the festive spirit! Santa and his really tall elf were in attendance too smiling and waving to all visitors as well as rewarding all children with a gold coin! Music was provided by the brilliant Mini Concerts, whose range of festive hits went down a treat with everyone!
At 7:30pm, after a short speech and a well timed countdown, the Mayor of Patchway Cllr Dayley Lawrence, pressed down his plunger and Patchway was covered in brilliant illuminations! Firstly, Patchway roundabout lit up before the angels and reindeers on the streetlights came to life too!
After everyone had seen the lights, the focus turned to the really big raffle with over 30 prizes up for grabs! Everyone had their eyes down for a winning ticket for some of the greatest festive prizes ever! The event was a great success and the community of Patchway really came out to support the first ever switch on event.

NEWS FROM YOUR MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT JACK LOPRESTI MP
This Autumn I have been focused on some of the key issues for our area, crime and transport
We have also seen the election of a new Prime Minister, The Right Honourable Rishi Sunak, his professional background of being the Chancellor of the Exchequer during the pandemic and knowledge of finance is exactly what we need right now as a nation. He therefore has my full support as Prime Minister
I was pleased to celebrate Diwali on the same day Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister having been invited to the Indian Heritage Celebration Event at Bradley Stoke Community School with Avon Indian Community Association. At this event I learned about the traditions and great cultural significance of Diwali, especially for the growing community of people of Indian heritage in our area.
On the 14th of October I met with the Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset Police, Mark Shelford who gave me an update on the increased police numbers in Avon and Somerset, as well as his strategy to introduce greater levels of leadership training at all levels of policing We also discussed the importance of cyber policing and computer science education to meet the evolving nature of crime. I will continue to support police in tackling crime and anti social behaviour to protect our community.
I have also focused on people’s concerns surrounding our local bus services, particularly the cancellations of bus routes and the unreliability of services, I therefore had a discussion with Doug Claringbold, Managing Director of First West of England who was receptive and understanding of my concerns surrounding service cancellations and reliability We discussed the challenge of the shortage of bus drivers which is the main cause of these issues with First needing an additional 200 drivers for the region. We also talked about the possibility of using apprenticeships and part time staff to reduce these pressures I will work together on an event with First Bus to help increase driver recruitment which would improve service reliability and could lead to additional services in April with the next service review.
Over the last few weeks I have also been busy supporting the Poppy Appeal and was honoured to be able to help launch the Stoke Gifford branch of the RBL’s Poppy Appeal on the 28th of October at Bristol Parkway I am very proud to be the Vice President of the branch and volunteer for such a good cause, I am always encouraged by the great response we get from people and I am thankful for your generous donations to help our veterans.
As always, should you need my help with anything, my office is open from Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm. Please telephone me on 01454 617783 or email me at: jack lopresti mp@parliament uk if I can be of assistance or to book a surgery
2ND PATCHWAY SCOUT GROUP
Then Cubs had a sleepover at our HQ where they sewed on badges and ironed their uniforms in readiness for the Patchway Remembrance parade. All the sections looked very smart as they took part in the service which followed and a wreath was laid at the Cenotaph
In December we will take our Christmas Float around the streets of Patchway, Charlton Hayes and Stoke Lodge We have a brand new Float made and decorated by our volunteers with lights and music and of course Father Christmas
Dates and routes will be published nearer the time on Facebook We hope to see lots of local residents on our way around the area

CONCORD CHURCH
In September 2022 a new church was launched at Aerospace Bristol that is offering a warm welcome and a new and distinctive way of going to church Concord Church doesn’t meet in a traditional building but rather in the cinema space right next to the Concorde aeroplane at the Aerospace Museum, Bristol. It aims to serve the families in the new housing developments of Charlton Hayes and Brabazon and the wider area and is excited to be welcoming new people every week into the church family
Rev Andy Carter, who leads the church with his wife Katy and a team of volunteers, explains Concord’s mission: “Our heart is to serve our local communities in Brabazon and Charlton Hayes We hope to be a church for those who wouldn’t normally go to church Our name is inspired by the creative, pioneering spirit and collaboration that led to the creation of the Concorde jet, and by the traditional Anglican prayer for peace that describes God as the ‘author of peace and lover of concord. Concord means unity, harmony or symphony and we hope to be a place where people from all backgrounds can come together and celebrate the love of God.”
Concord meets at 10.30am on Sunday mornings (with refreshments from 10) and has been running an Alpha course on Wednesday nights, where people from all backgrounds can explore the big questions of life, faith and meaning The next course starts in January and you can sign up at concordchurch.co.uk/alpha. There’s no pressure, no charge and no follow up Everyone is very welcome at Concord Church’s services and events, and there are great kids’ groups during the Sunday Service
The church is looking forward to celebrating Christmas at Aerospace Bristol On 17th December at 4pm, Aerospace Bristol and Concord Church will be hosting a community carols event event at the museum with carols under Concorde, led by Concord Church and mulled wine and mince pies on offer too. Then on Sunday 18th December at 10 30am Concord Church will hold a fun and engaging family carol service at its usual venue in Aerospace Bristol
Andy and the team would love to welcome you to Concord, do come and visit them one Sunday at 10.30am. Concord Church is a Church of England Church planted from St Nicholas Bristol with Holy Trinity Brompton You can find out more about the church at concordchurch.co.uk

FACE CHARITY
Young People work with Professional Graffitti Artist in Patchway!
With an artist as iconic as Banksy being born just down the road, it’s no wonder that graffiti art holds great cultural identity in our neighbouring city of Bristol When it comes to working with young people in South Gloucestershire, local charity FACE (Foundation for Active Community Engagement) knows how to hit the spot with effective engagement by connecting individuals and groups to activities which help them authentically explore and express themselves. The use of graffiti art has been a successful and creative way for FACE to work with young people in Patchway recently guided by local, acclaimed graffiti artist Nick Halahan (olasart com)
Initially, the Patchway Youth Work Team supported young people at their youth club to come up with designs and ideas for the re spraying of skate ramps in Norman Scott Park Following this, individuals were able to take their artwork home, and had the opportunity to develop these designs into life sized murals further down the line During October half term, Nick (who has painted murals globally in Scotland, Barcelona and Mexico, to name just a few locations!) supported young people to spray their art onto ramps in Norman Scott Park. The results were absolutely fantastic, and FACE couldn’t be prouder of all the contributions and effort that has gone into this project!
Many of the young people were aware of who he was and what his role is in Patchway and were happy to talk to him about youth club and what it means to them We had planned a special event as the football was on, so we had club set up and several young people making food and drinks.
Mayor of Patchway, Cllr Dayley Lawrence said that ‘it has been so good to attend the session here at The Patch. The young people are really fascinating and it’s brilliant to hear their views on their Town Council It has been great to hear about all of the work they have been doing with FACE and long may it continue’

Cribbs Patchway Metrobus Extension Works
Network Rail and its contractors Balfour Beatty are carrying out work to extend a retaining wall on the railway embankment next to the Station Road junction
The work, which is expected to last six weeks, will be carried out between 8am and 5 30pm Monday to Friday, and between 8am and 4pm on Saturdays Some work will need to be carried out on Sundays, but this will only happen on Sunday 27 November and Sunday 11 December, between 9.30am and 4pm.
To enable the work to take place, a section of the bus lane along the north side of Gipsy Patch Lane (running west to east) needs to be closed, but general traffic lanes along Gipsy Patch Lane will remain open The shared use path on the north side of Gipsy Patch Lane near to and under the bridge also needs to be closed, but the path on the south side will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists
From Monday 21 November the junction for Station Road on Gipsy Patch Lane will be closed to traffic This junction closure will need to remain in place for the duration of the work. A diversion route for vehicles, via Clay Lane and Little Stoke Lane, will be in operation and will be fully signposted

Free voucher scheme aims to encourage tree planting in South Gloucestershire
It’s National Tree Week (26 November to 5 December) and to mark the UK’s largest annual tree celebration, South Gloucestershire Council’s free tree voucher giveaway is back Tree Week is aligned with the start of the winter tree planting season (November to March) and aims to raise awareness of how we can all help to increase tree cover in the UK. This year, the council is working with three local tree nurseries and the Forest of Avon to promote tree planting at home, with 250 vouchers worth £20 available for residents to claim and use towards the cost of their own tree The vouchers are available on a first come, first served basis, with one voucher available per household. Applicants can choose to use the voucher to help plant a tree in their own garden, or alternatively opt for the voucher value to be passed on to the Forest of Avon Trust to plant a tree on their behalf
For those who choose to plant a tree in their own garden, the voucher can be used at one of these three tree nurseries: Landcare Tree Nursery, Old Sodbury Lodge Farm Trees, Rockhampton (fruit trees only) Mount Pleasant Trees, Rockhampton
Planting more trees is an important part of the council’s response to the climate and nature emergency, and they want to double the tree canopy by 2030 to improve biodiversity and keep the local environment healthy There is sufficient space in South Gloucestershire to plant the volume of trees to meet these targets, however, most of the land suitable for tree planting is privately owned So, the council say it’s important for residents, landowners, planners and other organisations to identify and make land available for their own tree planting to help contribute to the overall goal.
Councillor Steve Reade, cabinet member responsible for regeneration, environment and strategic infrastructure at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “We are committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and Tree Week provides us with a great opportunity to celebrate trees and their importance to our local, national and global environment. “Trees are essential to life on our planet; they remove carbon dioxide from the air, produce oxygen, store carbon, provide food and shelter for wildlife, give us shade and help to prevent flooding and soil erosion.
“A recent report on the council’s climate and nature emergency progress shows that South Gloucestershire is on track for the area to become carbon neutral by 2030 but we all need to play our part in helping restore nature. The simple act of planting a tree or donating to the Forest of Avon is a positive contribution which will help the environment and the places we love ” To claim a free tree voucher, visit www.southglos.gov.uk/treeweek and follow the instructions.
In addition to encouraging tree planting, the council is also celebrating hedgerows this year and is working with CPRE Avon and Bristol (The Countryside Charity) on their Hedgerow Heroes project to improve the way 118km of council owned hedgerows are managed to prevent over trimming. As well as marking boundaries and providing picturesque landscaping features, hedges are wildlife superhighways, giving animals birds and insects a safe connection to other habitats Managing hedgerows in the right way helps hedges stay healthy and means they can store more carbon and support more wildlife.
A number of CPRE Hedgerow Hero volunteers have already been at work hedgelaying in the area, which you can see on the Emersons Green Heritage Walk behind the earth embankment. Find out more by visiting www.cpreavonandbristol.org.uk/hedgerowheroes/ For more information about tree management in South Gloucestershire visit www southglos gov uk/trees

And much more green space is coming over the horizon: over the next 20 years, a total of over 86 acres of parks, playgrounds, landscaped gardens, sports fields and public squares are planned for the neighbourhood.
The design of the Park takes inspiration from aviation engineering, aiming to capture the historical, cultural and ecological uniqueness of the former airfield One of the highlights of the new green space will be the Heritage Trail, connecting the Brabazon Hangars with Aerospace Bristol Museum and retelling the history of the airfields pioneering past
When complete, it will be the largest new urban public park built in the South West for over 50 years, complete with a 2.5 acre lake. And, echoing the examples of past generations, it will offer something for everyone

The new lake will feature aquatic planting, whilst flowers and grasses, mature trees and shrubs will bring the Park to life for people and wildlife alike
Brabazon Park will be a place for people of every generation. There will be quiet shaded paths to catch a moment of peace. There will be lakeside viewing spots to watch the world go by There will be exercise areas and social hubs, kiosks, cafes and kids’ play spaces It will have public platforms for culture, art and performance, where everyone is welcome to come and play.
Why not enjoy a game of table tennis? Test your metal with petanque? Or get fit at the outdoor gym? Whether you are meandering along the Heritage Trail, watching your little ones in the woodland playground or finding your new favourite coffee spot on the lakeside boardwalk, Brabazon Park will be the social heart of the most exciting new city district in the South West
