ADDRESSING THE HEALTH INEQUITIES IN SOUTH ASIAN COMMUNITY

Hackensack Meridian JFK University Medical Center’s new South Asian Community Health Initiative focuses on improving the health and wellbeing of the South Asian community in and around Edison, NJ. Health screenings are offered throughout the community to assess risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke and also address social determinants of health, including food and housing insecurity. JFK is proud to partner with our donors to ensure that residents have access to quality care, culturally appropriate medical support and resources close to home.

“Identifying and helping those most at risk for severe medical conditions is vital to a healthy community.”

Hybrid Operating Room Improves Surgical Experience

Thanks to donor generosity, JFK University Medical Center’s stateof-the-art hybrid operating room combines advanced imaging and surgical technologies in one place, allowing open surgical procedures to be performed with a minimally invasive approach, resulting in improved patient outcomes and faster recovery. Multiple surgical specialists can work alongside each other performing complex endovascular and aortic procedures, saving valuable time when a life is on the line.

Plainfield Community Has Access to Critical Emergency Medical Services

The Muhlenberg Foundation was created in 1980 to raise funds for the former Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center. Today, the foundation supports the Snyder School of Nursing and the JFK Satellite Emergency Department on the Muhlenberg Campus, as well as programs that serve the Plainfield community. It also offers scholarships to nursing students at the Snyder School of Nursing. Emergency Medical Services are vital to a community’s health, and Muhlenberg Foundation supporters are ensuring that access to the high quality health care is available for the residents of Plainfield. Plainfield lacked critical emergency medical services; however, donor generosity from the Muhlenberg Foundation underwrote the cost of services, enabling care to remain available throughout this community.

Specialized Care for Spinal Cord Injury Patients

The Eric LeGrand Spinal Cord Injury Patient Care Room, located at Hackensack Meridian JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, is fully equipped with a specialty bed and an overhead lift system that facilitates safe patient transfers in and out of bed, into a wheelchair and into an oversized, accessible bathroom/shower room. We are grateful for our donors who help bring the latest advances in safe patient care and team member safety to JFK Johnson Rehabilitation.

“If

you cannot breathe, nothing else matters. We greatly appreciate all of our contributors for their kind donations towards this research.”

FAIZ BHORA, M.D., FACS, professor and regional chairman of Surgery, director Advanced Lung and Airway Center and chief of Thoracic Surgery, Hackensack Meridian Health Central Region

TRACHEA RESEARCH OFFERS HOPE

For patients with narrowing windpipes and tracheal issues caused by cancer or other diseases, and for whom other treatment options have not been successful, hope is on the horizon. The trachea is one of the few organs where transplants have a low success rate, but donor-funded research has discovered that bioengineered grafts will be effective for humans in the near future. In addition, advancements in 3D printing have aided the development of a 3D printed human compatible tracheal graft. Patients who face the life threatening effects of tracheal disease, such as difficulty breathing, as well as other concerns such as speaking, may soon benefit from our researchers’ groundbreaking work.

CANCER CENTER EXPANSION INCREASES ACCESS

JFK University Medical Center’s new cancer center will provide patients with access to the best-in-class, award-winning, comprehensive oncology services within a seamless continuum of care, close to home Patients will no longer have to travel to receive access to the latest clinical trials and advanced treatments, allowing them to remain close to family, friends and additional support services. The expansion will include 26 infusion bays available for patients, while creating offices and exam rooms for subspecialists, and includes space for future cancer care service expansions - further distinguishing JFK as a regional destination for expert cancer treatment. Additionally, the center’s focus on providing an enhanced patient care experience will help meet the emotional needs of patients throughout treatment. We are grateful for our family of supporters.
