/ / # 1 E M E R G E N C E Emergence is all around us and we don’t really realize that we are an important part of it.

Steven Johnson begins with the amoeba-like slime mold cell. These cells coalesce with thousands of neighbors to create a creature of greater complexity and even intelligence in certain circumstances. Swarm intelligence is also the sub-topic of this book.

These systems in simple terms solve problems by drawing on masses of relatively stupid elements, rather than a single, intelligent „executive branch.” They are bottom-up systems, not top-down. They get their smarts from below. In a more technical language, they are complex adaptive systems that display emergent behaviour. These systems are agents residing on one scale start producing behaviour that lies one scale above them: ants create colonies; urbanites create neighbourhoods; simple pattern-recognition software learns how to recommend new books. The movement from low-level rules to higher-level sophistication is what we call emergence.

But it wouldn‘t truly be considered emergent until those local interactions resulted in some kind of discernible macrobehavior. That would mark the beginnings of emergence, a higher-level pattern arising out of parallel complex interactions between local agents.

Simplicity of the individual components (i.e.: the ants) is beneficial. There is no need for each ant to have imprinted a map of what is in the colony‘s best interests, and in fact such ideas would be a disadvantage to the colony as a whole.

The author exemplifies how ants use the feedback from encountering the activities of other ants to usefully modify their behavior. Analogical to “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” by Jane Jacobs this shows how humans in urban areas positively affect the emergence of cities by their encounters in public areas.

A critical mass of ants is necessary for useful statistical averages to emerge. One or two ants bumping against each other are not a colony. „More is different“ also applies to the distinction between micromotives and macrobchavior: individual ants don‘t „know“ that they‘re prioritizing pathways between different food sources when they lay down a pheromone gradient near a pile of nutritious seeds.

Ants follow trails of pheromones left by other ants. In the research field it is common that you study a significant number of papers and emerge these thoughts to a newer and bigger one.

Vadodara, formerly called Baroda, is a city in Gujurat, a state in western India.

The Baroda Municipal Corporation proposed a redesign for the Baroda City Bus Station which shall include shelter for vehicles, information areas, public waiting area and public conveniences as well as room for the Vadodara railway Station and the Vadodara Central Bus Station. Now, architects and urban city planners are challenged to design a new Bus Terminal System which has the potential to evolve itself by taking the cognizance of urban movement patterns as a series for rhythms into account.

We are surrounded by emergence without realizing that we are an important part of it. The concept of emergence derives from findings of biology. In his book â&#x20AC;&#x153;Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software. Steven Johnson e.g. examines the amoeba-like slime mold cell. These systems solve collective action problems by drawing on masses of relatively stupid elements, without using one single intelligent being. 1.1 ANDROID WALK: Simple androids following simple rules 1.2 ANDROID WALKING HAVING RANDOM ENCOUNTERS: As the repetition of engaging with a previous rule leads to the normalization of behavior, the appearance of other androids on the path creates another, or more random, encounter. This encounter complexifies the behavior of the android, leading either to a reaction to the encounter or remaining as an accumulation of memory which reappears.

2.1 WHAT IS EMERGENCE THEORY: Unpacking the understanding of Emergence through previous experiences and the theory of Steven Johnson by answering a set of questions which may not exclusively define it, further hint at the design agendas. The movement from low-level rules to higher-level sophistication is what we call emergence. It follows a description of his five principles: I. more is different, II. ignorance is useful, III. encourage random encounters, IV. look for patterns in the signs, V. pay attention to your neighbors.

3.1 SIMCITY VIDEO GAME: The interaction between different buildings through proximity, creates various relationships. These interactions are seemingly self-generative because of the introduction of the rules for laying different buildings and services in the urban environment simulated. However, the new rules emerge only after the normalization of the older ones, and because of a continued exercise in achieving a desired urban state. The game is at a threshold of two contradicting systems: Top -Down System and Bottom-Up System. The player has the freedom to design the form and character of the built environment and the city evolves itself.

BRIDGE One of the most striking elements of the surrounding is the sky-walk. The sky-walk connects the railway station with the opposing street side. This creates an opportunity for pedestrians to connect from the railway station to the opposite road side without interacting with the traffic, which is directed under the sidewalk. I took this idea of connection without interaction to create a new system in which different participants of traffic can quickly connect to their destination without the occurrence of chaos. Thus, I constructed a system of multiple intersecting ramps which split different participants of traffic in different groups and spaced them on various levels.

I place the new bus terminal on the western side of the planning sport and connect it with the GSRTC Vadodara bus station. Through the constructed ramps emerge numerous hotspots which evolve sections of interaction supported by merchants, playgrounds, and cafes.

HOPPER After the first critique, I questioned the identified hotspots. Using the research findings of the group work, I determined the most important hubs for traffic participants. I constructed the bus terminal, main building, aboveground without changing its initial placement. It is planned in a funnel shape. This shape makes it possible to opt the flows of movements of vehicles and pedestrians. The main building consists of two floors as well as a terrace. On the ground level, one can find ticket counters, waiting areas, restrooms and bus terminals. A central access connects the ground level with the other floors. To the northern side of the building, I connected a tower.

The tower consists restaurants, offices, and flats and entails an open connection to the terrace of the main building. The tower serves as a landmark to ease orientation.

After the next discussion, I realized that my initial idea was very space consuming and complicated the flows of movements instead of simplifying them. Therefore, I reanalyzed the findings of the group research and realized that the primary flows of movements within the construction area, take place on a specific spot in a sharp elliptic shape. In this sport, where most of the movements take place, I decided to construct the bus terminal and therefore remove the building from the place of my initial idea. To create an environment where less space is consumed by an actual building, I constructed the bus terminal subsurface. Thus, I had the opportunity to create a completely new surface area which allowed people to interact with each other, their environment and nature, away from cars, busses or other vehicles. By designing the surface area, I referred to the plans of OMA-Office for “le Parc de la Villette”, in Paris. Their concept rests on the idea of five overlapping layers which evolve in a fascinating “park experience” for its visitors.

C H A K RA M O V E M E N T I absorbed the sharp elliptic form, by constructing the ground floor of the building in a wheel shape. To convert the idea of movement into the design of the building I reused this wheel shape five times in continuous angles. Thus, the floor plan of the building emerged out of six wheel shapes and appeared as six different rays pointing to six directions. The new building consists of five floors. The lowest floor, -3.UG, contains the bus stops and ticket counters and serves as the bus terminal. The -2.UG serves as parking area as well as drop-off and pick-up zone. The -1.UG is mainly a passenger and waiting are. Here, one can find passenger waiting areas, restrooms, tourist information zones, security rooms, retail spaces, dormitories, clock rooms and small kiosks. The main floor, GF, is the entry and exit area for departing and arriving passengers. The first floor, 1.F, contains restaurants, cafes and a viewing platform to give travelers the opportunity to rest, have an overview of the territory and a first impression of the city. The roof of the building is designed in a floral form which continuous the movements of the initial wheel shapes. The floors are connected through an inner vertical strand.

This strand serves as the spine of the building. It contains staircases and elevators and serves as a connection between the different floors. Furthermore, it transfers light from the outside from the top floor down to the lowest floor, creating an interaction between the insight and the outsight. These numerous interaction and intersection areas establish sidewalks, which allow people to gain new impressions and experiences passively.

PROJECT PATTERN

IDEA OF PEARLS â&#x20AC;&#x17E;PEARLSâ&#x20AC;&#x153;

The idea for the building evolved around the concept of emergence. This concept consists of five main rules: More is different, ignorance is useful, encourage random encounters, look for patterns in the signs, pay attention to your neighbors. Through the analysis of movement patterns of traffic participants, I identified movement logics. According to these logics, I evolved various hotspots, in which traffic participants engage with each other. This creates an interaction systems which contains all the main rules of emergence: The more participants engage with each other, the more different the place becomes; the more participants ignore each other, the more efficient the infrastructure works; hotspots serve as places where random encounters are encouraged; the identified hotspots display patterns in signs; the more attention participants play to their neighbors the more passive learning, and interaction will take place. The hotspots serve as places where participants can engage and ignore each other. As areas where participants can rush or pause. As a starting point for new experiences.

ACTIVITY AREA

In my planning process, I removed the old bus terminal to a new place. Going through various ideas of its shape and locality, I decided to construct it subsurface in a sharp elliptic shape. The different floors of the building do not only fulfill their functional requirements but also serve as interaction sections. The inner vertical strand connects the different floors with each other and allows passengers to engage with the outside even when they wait for their buses on the lowest floor. Designing a subsurface bus terminal gave me the freedom to reconstruct the entire surface area.

I not only created a zone of contact and interaction for passengers. But also, space where non-passengers can come together and enjoy their environment. It gave me the opportunity to create a space which will evolve through the populations` needs.

This part of the area will emerge as the “activity area”. The connection between the Bus Station to the GSRTC Bus Terminal is characterized by a seemingly arbitrary experience, following certain underlying processes and rules. The main characteristic of this area is the principle “more is different”, which shows the variability of these processes. The cafés in the bottom territory generate a quiet zone, providing shelter from weather and noise. They generate an existing “encounter zone”.

To give them space to maintain their profession and to give visitors the possibility to interact with these merchants, there is an area specifically designed for them. There are also areas designed to bring together homeless people, merchants and visitors to create another “encounter zone”.
