பகவானின் அவதார ரகஸ்யம். வபாய்ரகயடியான்..

இவர் அவதரித்தது சித்தார்தி ஆண்டு,ரதோதம், ேக நக்ஷத்திரத்தில் தேிழ்நாட்டிலுள்ள திருேழிரச என்ற திவ்யடதசத்தில். இவர் எம்வபருோன் ரககளில் உள்ள பஞ்சாயுதங்களில் சுதரஸனம் என்று டபாற்றபடும் சக்ரத்தின் அம்ஸோக அவதரித்தவர். பார்க்கவ ேகரிஷிக்கும் கனகாங்கி அம்ரேயாருக்கும் பிறந்த திருேழிரச என்ற

திருநாேம் வகாண்ே ஆண் ேகவு, பின்னாளில் வபருோள் டேல் வகாண்ே ஆறாத பக்தியால் பல பாசுரங்கரள இயற்றித் திரளத்தது. சக்கரத்தாழ்வாடர

இத்திருக்குழந்ரதயாகப் பிறந்து திருேழிரச ஆழ்வார் என வபயர் வபற்றதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. இவரது வரலாற்றில் காணப்படும் அற்புதங்கள்:

பிரப்பங்காட்டில் இருந்த இக்குழந்ரதரய, பிரம்பு வவட்டிச் வசல்ல வந்த

திருவாளன் என்பவர் கண்ோர். கண்ணுக்கு இனிய அக்குழந்ரதரயத் தன்

இல்லத்திற்கு எடுத்துச் வசன்றார். இக்குழந்ரதடயா பால் அருந்தவில்ரல. பசிவயன்று அழவும் இல்ரல.

ஆனாலும் பிறந்த பச்சிளங்குழந்ரத உண்ணா டநான்பு இருந்ததால் பார்ப்

டபாருக்கு ேனம் பரதத்தது. அதில் ஒருவர் தன் ேரனவி யிேம் பசும்பாரலக்

காய்ச்சி இனிப்புச் சுரவடயற்றிக் வகாடுக்கச் வசால்ல, குழந்ரதயும் பால் அருந்தத் வதாேங்கியது. காலம் பல வசன்ற பின்னர் ஓர் நாள் சிறுவனான அக்குழந்ரத

சிறிது பாரல ேட்டும் அருந்தி விட்டு ேீ திரய அத்தம்பதி யினரரப் பருகக் கூற, அருந்தியவுேன் அவர்கள் முதுரே நீங்கியது. இளரே வபற்ற அவர்களுக்கு இப்பாலின் ேகிரேயால் குழந்ரதவயான்று பிறக்க அக்குழந்ரதக்கு களிக்கண்ணன் என்று வபயரிட்டு வளர்த்து வந்தனர்.

சீரும், சிறப்புோய் வளர்ந்த களிக்கண்ணனும் திருேழிரச சீேர் ஆனார். ஆரம்ப காலங்களில் ரசவ சேயத்ரத சார்ந்திருந்தார் திருேழிரச. இவரர முதல்

ஆழ்வார்களில் ஒருவரான டபயாழ்வார், ரவணவ சேயத்ரத ஏற்கச் வசய்து, திருேந்திர உபடதசம் வசய்தார்.

பின்னாளில் காஞ்சிபுரம் வசன்ற திருேழிரச தன் ஆசிரேத்ரத சுத்தம் வசய்யும்

வடயாதிகப் வபண்ரண அவளது விருப்பப்படி இளரேயாக்கினார். இப்வபண்ணின் இளரேரயக் கண்ே பல்லவ ேன்னன், அப்வபண்ரண ேணந்தான். தானும் இளரேயாக டவண்டும் என்று விரும்பினான் ேன்னன். தன் விருப்பத்ரத

ஆழ்வாரின் சீேனான களிக்கண்ணனிேம் வதரிவித்தார். இப்படிப்பட்ே வரங்கரள அரனவருக்கும் அளிக்க இயலாது என களிக்கண்ணன் எடுத்துக் கூற டகாபம் வகாண்ோன் ேன்னன்.

சீேரர உேனடியாக நாடு கேத்த ேன்னன் உத்தரவிட்ோன். இரதயறிந்த

ஆழ்வார், சீேனுேன் தானும் காஞ்சிரய விட்டு வவளிடயற முடிவு வசய்தார். தான் பூஜித்து வந்த காஞ்சி வரதராஜப் வபருோளிேம், `நாங்கள் இல்லாத

இக்காஞ்சியில் உனக்கும் டவரல இல்ரல. பாம்பரணரயச் சுருட்டிக் வகாண்டு

நீயும் எங்களுேன் வந்துவிடு என அரழத்தார். வபருோளும் தன் பாம்பரணரயச் சுருட்டிவகாண்டு ஆழ்வா ருேன் வசன்றார் என்கிறது இத்திருத்தல வரலாறு. வபருோளின் 108 திருப்பதிகளில் திருேழிரச ஆழ்வார் பதிமூன்று திவ்விய டதசத் திருக்டகாயில்களில் ேங்களாசாசனம் வசய்துள்ளார் என்பது குறிப்பிேத்தக்கது. ரகசியம் வதாேரும்………………… ********************************************************************************************************************************

SRI GUNA RATHNA KOSAM SLOKAM 1 The first slOkam starts with Our Lord's efforts to create the Naama-Roopa Prapancham (the world of the form of names and forms) and Sri RanganAyakI's significant part in its creation: iïyE smSticdiciÖxanVysn< hre> , A¼IkairiÉralaekE> sawRyNTyE k«tae=Ãil> .

7 MEANING AS PER DR.V.N. VEDANTHA DESIKAN / V.N.V.): “This anjali, the supplicant posture of the two palms (of the hands) is submitted to the great MahA LakshmI. It is Her majestic look of approval that adds a meaning and a sense of fruition to the task of governance of the Universe, creating it, protecting it, etc., that the Lord achieves, at some strain, (let us say so!), as if He does all this only to please Her! The great creator functions for the pleasure and approval of Sri RanganAyakI! To Her, my anjali!”

Dr.V.N.V. has added brief comments in Tamil beyond translations of the slOkams about the specific tatthvams covered by ParAsara BhattAryar. They are housed in Sri Nrusimha PriyA issues. AdiyEn has benefited from them and will highlight them as the postings take shape.

AdiyEn will also compile additional information points as elaborations for extended anubhavams of the words and phrases chosen by ParAsara BhattAryar.

SPECIAL NOTES BY ADIYEN (V.S.): ParAsara Bhattar starts with an Anjali to RanganAyakI PirAtti (Sriyai KruthOanjali:) for the conferral of Her anugrahams at the start of his creation of an eulogy of Her anantha KalyANa GuNams. The power of anjali to the Lord or His Devi has the vaibhavam of melting their hearts into “watery material” (Jala paNDam =am+jalayathi ithi) .

Sri RanganAyaki is Sarva Loka SaraNyai (the object of refuge by all the denizens of the Universe).

ParAsara Bhattar offers his prArthanA-poorvaka prapatthi (Self surrender preceded by prayer) through his anjali to Her at the start of his creation of a sthuthi about Her limitless auspicious GuNAs (anantha kalyANa guNAs).

ParAsara Bhattar starts with the anjali- mudhrA as taught by his PoorvAchAryan, Swamy AlavandhAr (28th slOkam of his sthOthra Rathnam): tvadangrim-uddhisya kadhApi kEnachith yathA tathA vaapi sakruth kruthonjali: | tadhaiva mushNAthi asubhAnyasEshatha: SubhAni pushNAthi na jAthu heeyathE || Swamy ALavandhAr was performing anjali to the Lord of Srirangam in the above slOkam.

AchArya RaamAnujA followed his Predecessor AchAryan (PoorvAcharyan, AlavandhAr) when he saluted SriranganAyaki (MahA Lakshmi) on a Panguni Uttharam day through his SaraNAgathiGadhyam: “Bhagavan NaarAyaNa-abhimatha-anuroopa-Svaroopa- guNa-vibhava-iswarya- seelAdhianavadhika-athisaya- asankhyEya KalyANa guNA Padma vanAlayA”. AchArya RaamAnujA prays to Sri RanganAyaki first befitting our SampradhAyam since the anjali performed for Her (KruthOnjali) first will have the same auspicious results as that done for Her Lord.

Late Sriman S. BhAshyam has translated the above SaraNAgathy gadhyam passage of AchArya RaamAnujA pertaining to SriranganAyaki (MahA LakshmI) as follows: “Oh BhagavathI! Oh Sriyam Devi! Thyself, Thine form, its qualities, and the most wonderful, limitless innumerable collections of auspicious qualities of Thine, such as, Greatness, Ruler ship and high virtues are all to Your Lord's liking and worthy of the natural form and qualities of Your Lord, Bhagavan NaarAyaNan Himself”.

SrimAn BhAshyam points out that the words “anuroopa” and “abhimatha” are used in conjunction to indicate their unique co-existence in the case of the Dhivya Dampathis.

Anuroopam means likeness, conformity; Abhimatham means agreeable or desired status. MahA Lakshmi's GuNa Rathnams are in conformity with those of the Lord and much desired by Him and vice-versa.

The phalan of the 28th slOkam of Alavandhar for BhagavaAn is identical in its effect to the Anjali performed (kruthOnjali) of ParAsara Bhattar in his first slOkam to Sri RanganAyaki. The meaning of the 28th SlOkam of Swamy AlavandhAr is: “Oh Sriman NaarAyaNA! When One performs anjali at Your sacred feet, even once in any form, that anjali destroys all their sins without trace. It confers enormous auspiciousness and makes them multiply. That anjali never fails to yield the above results”.

Sri ParAsara Bhattar had this in mind perhaps, when he chose the very words of AlavandhAr (KruthOnjali:) in his first slOkam of Sri GuNa Rathna Kosam addressed to his Mother, Sri

RanganAyaki.

வபாருள் – தயாடதவிடய! உனக்கு அேங்கியதும், ஸத்வ குணத்தால் ஆனதும், நீண்ேதாகவும், உறுதியானதாகவும் உள்ள ஶ்ரீநிவாஸனின் குணம் என்னும் வரலயாக நீ உள்ளாய். உங்களிேம் இருந்து என் டபான்ற விலங்குகள் எத்தரன தூரம் ஓடினாலும், ஶ்ரீநிவாஸனின் டவட்ரே என்பரத ஒரு சாக்காக ரவத்துக்வகாண்டு, என் டபான்றவர்கள் வசன்ற வழிரய அறிந்து, பிடித்துக்வகாண்டு, உங்களிேம் டசர்த்துக் வகாள்ளடவண்டும். விளக்கம் – நாங்கள் உலக விஷயம் என்னும் காடுகளில் டேய்ந்தபடி உள்டளாம். எங்கரள பிடிக்கும் டவட்ரே என்பரதச் சாக்காக ரவத்துக் வகாண்டு, நாங்கள் திரிகின்ற இேத்திற்கு நீ ஶ்ரீநிவாஸரன அரழத்து வரடவண்டும். நாங்கள் எங்டக ஓடி ஒளிந்தாலும், எத்தரன தூரம் ஓடினாலும், எளிதாகப் பிடிக்கும்படி, நீ நீளோன கயிறாக டவண்டும். நாங்கள் உனது வரலரய அறுத்துக் வகாண்டு ஓே முயற்சித்தாலும், நீ உறுதியான கயிறாக இருக்க டவண்டும். விடக்ஷபம் என்றால் வசுதல் ீ என்று வபாருள். இங்கு தயாடதவி கோக்ஷத்ரத வசடவண்டும் ீ என்று கூறுகிறார்.

ஆசீ விஷக்ரஹணடகளிநிபாம்அவஸ்த்தாம் வபாருள் – தயாடதவிடய! வதாேர்ச்சியாகச் வசய்யப்படும் என்னுரேய பாவக்கூட்ேங்கரள நிரனத்து நான் நடுங்கியபடி உள்டளன். உன்னுரேய கருரணரய நன்றாகத் த்யானிக்கிடறன். இவ்விதம் வகாடிய விஷம் வகாண்ே பாம்ரபக் ரகயில் பிடித்துக் வகாண்டு விரளயாடுவது டபான்ற என்னுரேய நிரலரய நீ ோற்ற டவண்டும். விளக்கம் – தன்னுரேய வசயலானது பாம்பாட்டியின் வசயல் டபான்று உள்ளது என்றார். பாம்பாட்டி பாம்புேன் விரளயாடும்டபாது, அவரன அரவகளில் சில கடித்துவிடும். உேடன அவன் தகுந்த ரவத்தியம் வசய்து வகாள்வான். பின்னர் ேீ ண்டும் விரளயாடும்டபாது, இடத நிரல உண்ோகும். இது டபான்று பாவம் – ப்ராயச்சித்தம் என்டற வாழ்க்ரகரயக் கேத்துவதாகக் கூறுகிறார். இந்த நிரலயில் இருந்து தன்ரன ோற்ற டவண்டும் என்று விண்ணப்பம் வசய்கிறார்.

Surrendering to the Divine Couple --The Lord of Vitthuvakkodu, while listening to the verse of Sri Kulasekara Azhvar, posed a question to him.

The Lord: Hey, Kulasekara! You have been reciting your Prabandam before me and answering all my queries. Repeat the last verse once more. I have to seek an explanation on that.

(Perumal Tirumozhi, 5-5) The Lord: O.K. In this, you first asked, where could you go but attaining my feet. Immediately thereafter, you said, you had been going all round and returning like the bird on a ship’s flagpost, which was flying all directions to locate the shore and coming back without finding it.

These two statements appear to be contradictory.

Azhvar: How, my Lord?

The Lord: First you said, you were sure of the destination that you had to reach, that is, My Feet.

Later you compare yourself to the bird on the ship implying that all your attempts to find the destination meet with failure only. Don’t you see that there is a contradiction in your verse?

Azhvar: My Lord, the first one was a statement of adiyen’s position. That is, adiyen is sure that Your Feet are the only destination. The second statement was intended to explain to others that Your Feet cannot be attained by our own efforts. For Your grace is absolutely essential.

The Lord: Please elaborate, Kulasekara. Otherwise, you will be misunderstood.

Azhvar: My Lord, adiyen shall make it clearer. There are so many siddhanthas circulating in the country. They preach various methods to attain liberation, that is, Moksha. All of them are being attempted by people who have no clear picture. They try these methods one after another but find themselves in the same original position without reaching the destination they have to attain.

Adiyen kept myself in their position to explain the actual truth and compared such attempts to those of a bird perched on the flag-post of a ship moving in the middle of an ocean. The bird tries to reach the destination on its own by flying every direction several times without success and has to come back to the original position where it was – the flag-post of the ship. There is also another danger, my Lord. There is a possibility of the bird missing the ship and falling down into the ocean from where it cannot rise again.

Similarly, people who are misguided by other postulates are likely – why likely? – definitely, fall deeper into hells from where it would be almost impossible for them even to come to the position where they were before making such misadventures.

The Lord: That is O.K. You are giving a caution to others. For that, you could have merely said ‘a bird’. But, why did you qualify it with bigness (Maa Paravai)?

Azhvar: My Lord, adiyen wanted to emphasise that however big – powerful – one may be, such attempts will not yield result. The ‘bigness’, on the other hand, may push him down into the unfathomable ocean of this material life (samsara).

The Lord: All right. But I have one more query. In the earlier part of the verse, while describing my feet, you mentioned ‘Twin Feet’ (Inaiyadi). Why did you choose that expression, while mere ‘Feet’ (adi) would have been sufficient?

Azhvar: That is a valid question, my Lord! Merely saying ‘adi’, adiyen felt, would not be enough. That will convey Your Feet only.

The Lord: What more you want?

Azhvar: A mere ‘adi’ does not complete the act of saranagati. Saranagati will be complete only when we do it in the presence of Mother, as Ilaiya Perumal did in Ramayana. And he was successful in achieving his purpose.

The Lord: You mean Lakshmana? What did he do?

Azhvar: Before proceeding on exile, You tried to prevent Ilaiya Perumal and Sita Piratti from accompanying You to forest. You wanted them to stay back in Ayodhya till Your return after 14 years. Sita Piraatti convinced You very ably and strongly that She had to go with You to the forest and You also finally yielded to Her request.

After listening to the conversation between You and Sita Devi, Lakshmana wondered how his position would be, when even Sita Devi found it so difficult to get Your permission.

However, he could not bear the grief due to impending separation from You. His face was covered with tears. Sage Valmiki describes:

sa bhraatuscharanau gaadam nipeedya Raghunandanah / Seethaam uvaachaathiyasaam Raaghavam cha mahaavrutham // (Ayodhyakandam, 31-2)

“Tightly holding the feet of his brother, Lakshmana spoke to Sita as also to Sri Rama who had undertaken a great vow.”

It is clear that Lakshmana surrendered to both – You and Your Consort, Sita. He did not find any alternative to achieve his intention of doing service to You. The Lord: So, what is the speciality about it?

Azhvar: Divine Mother’s presence is necessary at the time of surrender, as She will ensure that the surrender becomes fruitful. It was the case with Lakshmana too. He succeeded in getting Your assent to his accompanying You to the forest, even though You tried to keep him in Ayodhya to look after Kausalya and Sumitra. He told You that they were capable of taking care of themselves. Lakshmana ardently pleaded with you with these words: Kurushva maam anucharam vaidharmyam neha vidhyathe / kruthaarthoham bhavishyaami thava chaartha prakalpyathe // (Ayodhyakanda, 31-24) “Therefore, kindly make me Your attendant. There will not be any impropriety. I will be benefited and Your purpose also will be adequately served.”

How it was going to be? Lakshmana explains that also:

(Bhavaamsthu saha Vaidehyaa girisaanushu ramsyase / Aham sarvam karishyaami jaagrathah svapathscha The //) (Ayoydhyakanda, 31-27) “You will sport freely with Vaidehi on mountain-tops. I shall do everything for You, whether You are waking or sleeping.”

This episode was in my mind when adiyen recited the earlier part of my verse mentioning ‘Two Feet”. Adiyen also surrendered to You both, the Lord and His consort of Vitthuvakodu as well. You have manifested Yourself here as “Uyyavanda Perumaal” and “Abhayapradan”, and Piratti as “Vitthuvakkottu Valli” That was why adiyen said “Inaiyadi”, keeping in mind Your Consort also.

Yadusreshtha,Sannivasaah Nama sankeerthanam is not only just a sense of utterance of divine names but understanding the glory aspects of Sriman Narayana. When devotees perform anga pradakshinam along the four boundaries of the temple the presence of all demigods surrounding the main deity will also observe and sure to redress the grievances in their body thoroughly. It is like a master check up done in medical laboratories.

During Viswaroopa darisanam it is seen that many blind persons at Srivilliputhur ,throng for the same with a feeling that they are seen by Sriman Narayana at that time though they are not able to see Him .They get relief easily through this faith. .

Nadaswaram being played in the temples ,as the sound of Thavil and nadaswaram in both morning and evening to avoid any gossips ,loose talks in the premises and to concentrate of divine worship. When old and disabled persons are not able to come to the temple to worship, Sriman Narayana Himself, prefers to come out of the temple on utsavam days ,to give darsan to such devotees. During such functions recitations of Nalayira divya prabhandam in the front and Veda parayanam in the back of the deity are being done. Added to this, divya nama bajans ,and other music performances take place to indicate His presence to all physically affected persons.

All food items distributed freely in temples are not just a sadam but a Prasadam which imparts the feelings of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;one god, one community one foodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Apart from the food for stomach, slokas and archanas done in temples are to be treated as food for the ears. Processions in various vahanams like elephant ,horse, simham,yali, naga ,Garuda Hanumantha during Brahma utsavams are taking place to indicate that He is easily accessible to everyone and no one should have a feeling that they cannot identify His presence due to their physical or mental deficiency. Ohm namo Narayana utterance alone only solution to get salvation for all. .

In 705th nama Yadusreshthah it is meant as the best among Yadhavas and who is excelling all others against yadhavas .Sri Krishna ,as an incarnation of Sriman Narayana ,has raised the yadava community which was in much lower level.

Periazhwar Thirumozhi pasuram hails the birth of Sri Krishna in Yadava dynasty in many places as ‘AAyar kulathinil vandu thondruyaanjanavannan ‘and Azhwar himself as ‘Veyar pugazh vittu chithan’.similaarly, Andal in Nachiar Thirumozhi ,Varanamayiram pasuram says about the dreams of marrying Sri Krishna who is great from yadava with the bride the daughter of Veyar clan Vishnu chithan as ‘ AAyanukkaga thaan kanda kanavinai Veyar pugah villiputhur kon kothai ‘.Nammazhwar in Thiruvaimozhi says as AAyar thalaivan in 1.5.1 and as AAyar kula mudale in 6th pasuram . Azhwar enumerates the great qualities of Sriman Narayana as one who is the head of seven worlds, head of all Nithyasuris, one who relieves all from the innumerable sins through the meditation, who is acting as medicine to remove all bad evils, one who keeps Brahma and Siva with Him, one with all wonderful characters, and one who steals butter and born as the head of Yadavas .

Similar to this in 1.7.3 pasuram , Azhwar says as AAyar kozhundai, and says that all his activities are of much excellence .He is nectar like and relieves all innocent features of all .Thus this nama indicates His interest in the uplift of a community.

In 706 th nama Sannivaasah it is meant as ‘The Abode of the saints ,holy knowing and intelligent good people. Great saints like Sanaka considered Sriman Narayana as the abode, though He has assumed human nature and all his actions were like ordinary human beings. Human beings caught in the web of worldly activities, feel happiness and desires to get rid of miseries and just to enjoy happiness and hence baffled as how to put an end to this grief. Saints gifted with spiritual wisdom have left the various directives to seek bliss. Sri Ramanuja suggested this through his three immortal verses. saranagatthi gatyam, is on the regretful soul begging divya dampathis to save him from perils, Sri Ranga gadyam paying homage to Sri Ranganatha and Sri Ranganayaki, and Vaikunta gadyam on the picture of lord’s divine abode. In Gita 15.15 Sri Krishna says as “My devotees know the truth and realising the same He is seated in the heart of all and thus entering into His being.

He is the Light of all lights, one beyond darkness; knowledge, the knowable and the goal of knowledge, and seated in the hearts of all. Sriman Narayana is man’s permanent companion and abode and so what one should consider as real achievement is not to accumulate much wealth or seek position, possession, and power but to seek the grace of God by adoring him completely .Swamy Desikan in Adaikalap pathu says as He was not able to practice the path of devotion to attain salvation. He surrendered before Him, Understanding that there is no greater penance than to surrender to Him., He made a complete surrender to the merciful lord and so the abode will get the wisdom filled up, fill the mind with happiness ,and would be useful to bring peace forever.Thus this nama shows the path to attain Him.

அதன் காரணோக, பகவான் இங்டக டவதத்தின் கட்ேரளரய ேீ ற டவண்டியதாயிற்று. சரி.... இது அனுேதிக்கப்பட்ே ஒன்றானால், இப்டபாது தன்ரனத் தாக்க வரும் ேற்ற தாய் ோேன்கரள என்ன வசய்வது ? எல்லாருடே டதவகியின் சடகாதரர்கள். இவர்கரள அழிக்க ஒடர வழி தன் அண்ணன் பலராேன் தான். ஏவனனில், அவர் டராகிணியின் ேகன். அவ்வரகயில், எதிடர நிற்பவர்கள் தாய்ோேன்ோர் ஆக முடியாது. அந்த எட்டு டபரரயும் வகால்லும் பணிரய பலராேர் ஏற்றுக் வகாண்ோர். குவலாயபீே யாரனரயக் வகான்ற டபாது, கிருஷ்ணரும் அவரும் ஆளுக்வகாரு தந்தத்ரத ஒடித்து வந்திருந்தனர். அந்த

அப்டபாது, டதவடலாகத்தில் இருந்து ேலர் ோரி வபாழிந்தது. கிருஷ்ணபலராேரின் வரோன ீ வசயல்களால் யடசாரதயும்,

நந்தடகாபனும் ஆனந்தோகி கண்ணர்ீ வடித்து நின்றனர். கிருஷ்ணர் கேவுள் என்பது நன்றாகத் வதரிந்து விட்ேதால், அவரரத் வதாே அவர்களுக்கு ரதரியம் வரவில்ரல. கிருஷ்ணடரா அவர்களின் பாதத்தில் விழுந்து ஆசி வழங்கச் வசான்னார்.

அவர் கேவுள் என்பதால் அவருக்கு ஆசி வழங்கும் தகுதி தங்களுக்கு இல்ரல எனக்கருதி, அவர்கள் ஒதுங்கி நின்றனர். அப்டபாது கிருஷ்ணர் அவர்களிேம், தாடய ! டதவகி என்ரனப் வபற்றவள் என்றாலும் நீடய என்ரன வளர்த்தாய். என் பால்ய பருவ விரளயாட்டுகரள நீடய ரசித்தாய். அம்ோ ! இந்த உேல் தாய் தந்ரதயின் உறவால் பிறக்கிறது. அதன்

Sri Krishnavataram:

Krishna and Banasura: In the city called Sonitapura lived the asura Bana who belonged to the lineage of Prahaladazhwan. Banasuran had 1000 arms. Banasuran had a daughter called Usha. Banasuran was a devotee of Lord Siva. One day Usha saw Lord Siva sporting in the royal garden with Parvati Devi.

The girl wished to get married soon so that she too can sport with her husband.

Parvati Devi blessed the girl that she will soon obtain a handsome husband. The eager girl wanted to know the exact date.

‘On the day of Vaikashi dwadashi, you will see a young man in your dream. That young man is your husband.’

As per Parvati Devi’s words, Usha dreamt about a handsome young man in her dream on Vaikashi dwadashi. The next morning she told her friend Chitralekha who sketched the picture of the young man in Usha’s dream. The two girls went to Banasuran’s library which contained information about various kings.

‘What about this handsome man?’ asked Chitralekha bringing forth the picture of Lord Krishna, ‘He looks like the man in my sketch?’

‘Yes He looks like the man in my dream but He is not the man we are looking for as He is more handsome than the man in my dreams,’ said Usha.

‘Look at this painting then,’ said Chitralekha showing Usha the painting of Krishna’s son Pradyuman.

‘He is not as handsome as Krishna but He is better looking than the man in my dream. Please continue looking till you find the man in my dream.’

‘Take a look at this painting.’

‘This is the man!’ exclaimed Usha.

They found out that the young man was Krishna’s grandson Anirudhan.

Chitralekha used her yogic powers to kidnap Anirudhan from Dwaraka while he was sleeping at night. She brought him to the inner quarters of Usha. Anirudhan fell in love with Usha and married her in secret. Soon information about Anirudhan’s presence reached the ears of Banasuran. He paid Usha a visit and found her playing a game of chess with Anirudhan.

‘Who is this man!’ thundered Banasuran.

‘He is my husband Anirudhan, the grandson of Lord Krishna of Dwaraka.’

‘How could you marry the grandson of my nemesis?’

Banasuran placed both Usha and Anirudhan under arrest.

Sage Naradar informed Lord Krishna about the whereabouts of Anirudhan. The Lord attacked Banasuran. Lord Siva with his army came to assist Banasuran but was defeated by Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna cut the 998 out of 1000 arms of Banasuran after which Banasuran accepted defeat and handed over both Usha and Anirudhan to the Lord.

Esoteric Meaning: Sonitapuram, the city of Banasuran means the red city and refers to the body which is red because of blood flow. Banasuran is the jeevatma.

Banasuran’s daughter Usha is his faith. Anirudhan is Lord Krishna Himself existing as antaryami in Banasuran’s heart. The Dwadashi or 12th day of all the fortnights of the lunar month is Vishnu’s day. By following Ekadashi ritual the jeevatma was able to obtain Lord Vishnu’s blessing on Dwadashi day. The month of vaishaka gets its name from star Vishaka meaning success. Hence the Dwadashi of this month yields success to the jeevatma. The jeevatma gets a glimpse of the antaryami Brahman.

Banasuran weds his faith to Perumal and locks them up in his heart. Perumal then wages war against Banasuran to destroy the things which prevented the jeevatma from reaching Him. He cut off Banasuran’s accumulated karma by cutting his 998 arms and reducing him to his natural state (that is jeevatma’s natural state) with just 2 arms. Thus Banasuran is freed from samsara.

Lord Siva represents time and hence Perumal frees the jeevatma from the influence of time. Astronomically, Anirudhan is the moon the regent of Mrigasiras. The star in Orion constellation, red-coloured Betelgeux is Banasuran while the star Rohini is Usha which is always close to Mrigasiras as if it is being loved by the regent of Mrigasiras moon. On the month of Visaka, the moon is near star Chitra. Hence the character Chitralekha is shown to carry over the moon to Rohini.

Ivargal Thiruvakku Eating to survive There was a famine in the Kuru country. Ushasti, son of Chakra, lived in a village where mahouts resided. Ushasti and his young wife were starving.

Ushasti wanted to keep himself alive, because he was keen to acquire Brahma vidya.

He came upon a mahout who was eating forest grams and he asked him for some.

The mahout said that he had eaten most of the grams and there was very little left.

Ushasti said he did not mind, for he had to eat something to be alive.

The mahout shared the leftover grams with Ushasti. He then offered Ushasti some water. But Ushasti said that he had eaten the grams in order to avoid death. But water was not a necessity at that point.

The moral of the story is that when one is danger of dying due to starvation, one should not be finicky about what one eats, said M.K. Srinivasan in a discourse.

Even if the food is of sub-standard quality or if it is only leftover food, one can still consume it in order to save oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. But to eat more than what is necessary to keep alive falls in the category of desire.

One should eat enough to survive, but not more.

Ushasti also gave some grams to his wife. She ate some and kept aside the rest.

The next morning, Ushasti told her that the king was performing a sacrifice. If he (Ushasti) could go to the sacrifice and offer his services, he would be rewarded. But to sustain himself for this, he again needed some food.

The wife, who had saved up some of the grams, offered them to him.

They were stale, but Ushasti ate them and then proceeded to the kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sacrifice.
