australia Glamping here is not rising; it rose a long time ago, before the rest of the world even noticed. Quietly, gradually and steadily, Aussies have taken advantage of their abundant natural resources and have built around exploiting them. They might have not outrightly placed the label ‘Glamping’, but, they have developed travel experiences and packages that, to my eyes at least, seem like predecessors for a healthy, booming Glamping industry to set strong foundations on: all things premium, alluding of luxury, smelling of clean air. In other words, converting natural beauty into tangible services, and intangible experiences that can be felt and enjoyed, without sacrificing on comfort. Lamentably, the lack of Glamping-specific statistics, urges me to spread a word of caution on existing data and how they can inform and guide Glamping operators’ and suppliers’ decision-making. Australia is a great example to illustrate this. Yes, there is fuss about Glamping in lifestyle magazines, influencers’ instagram accounts and travel media outlets. A quick Google search will flood you with ecstatic reports on the ‘coolest Glamping Spots in New South Wales’, ‘Luxury Bush experiences in The Outback’ and lots of other exciting accounts of how ‘trendy’ Glamping is. But where is the industry data? Where is the academic theory backbone on which Glamping operators and suppliers can confidently project their growth prospects on? From my research, it emerged that national entities such as Tourism Research Australia, The Caravan Industry Association of Australia and regional organisations such as Tourism Western Australia, meticulously produce snapshots of the Caravanning & Camping Market. Nonetheless, there is neither direct market research on Glamping nor explicit acknowledgment of it as a distinct industry or even niche within Camping, Luxury or Naturebased Tourism.

Emma Gavala is an academic researcher from the London School of Economics, in the nascent field of Consumer Behaviour in Glamping. She has worked at Google UK and is currently in Australia travelling and writing. This illustrates an immense gap in literature; Glamping might be indeed happening, flourishing, expanding and diversifying (not just in Australia but globally too) but there is no concrete tracking of it, who the actual Glampers are, what they do, what they like, what they expect, what they pay, what they wish to see... By 2018, the Australian Glamping-like operators are more mature in experience than their European counterparts, they are more well-established, with a robust clientele of mainly ‘staycationers’, facing primarily domestic competition, due to Glamping-like substitutes across varied locations. The very nature of the Australian continent, out of metropolitan areas, the so-called ‘bush’ or ‘outback’, might be even rendering Glamping as one of the few options to experience the beauty of remote locations, for those travellers seeking alternatives to conventional camping and caravanning. Surely, the 7.1m Australians reported to have stayed in camping, cabins, caravan and national parks, in the last two years, contributing a whooping 19 billion AUD to the Australian economy (Caravan Industry Association Australia, 2018) are encouraging for the sister-Glamping market. Note though, that these figures are informative only to the extent that they illustrate the well-grounded Australian love affair with the ‘Great Outdoors’. This might be attributed to Australia’s isolated geographical position, making within and inter-state holidays more viable options for domestic travellers. In all, I would characterise Glamping as a well-functioning, mature (and not nascent) industry in Australia, with new niches emerging, each one boosting the prospects of the industry’s growth 05

Belgium Wilfried Baeten is founder of Black Sheep Productions - one of the largest suppliers of Glamping tents to the festival scene in Europe. Wilfried has a creative brain and designs the tents and sail structures for the company. As in other countries, glamping is the hottest new trend in the Belgian tourism and festival industries. It perfectly suits the current zeitgeist in which ‘slowing down’ and ‘back to nature’ are key words. We, the Belgian company Black Sheep Productions design, create and build custom-made tents that meet the need of today’s hottest trend in tourism: glamping. For a while now, we have been receiving questions from festivals, resorts and event agencies to create new concepts. If you want to remain active in this industry, creativity, innovation and good communication are paramount. That is why experience has become an ever more important element. Creating an added value and a unique experience with a limited impact on the environment has never been so important for the tourist industry as it is today. The accommodation should not only be luxurious and fully equipped, they should also fit into the ‘perfect picture’. The renowned Belgian festival Tomorrowland is the biggest example of customer focus and unique experience in festival glamping. Over the years we created 4 different types of glamping units, more than 800 numbers in total, which perfectly fit in the luxury glamping industry. We think people will also get used to long stay glamping, even in Belgium. People go to festivals for a couple of days and it’s not unusual they add a couple of days to their stay to discover the surrounding area or a nearby city. Other groups do not

go on a summer holiday for two or three weeks, but several shorter periods a year. Travelers who do this, expect more of their stay than spending a few nights on a rock-hard air mattress in a cheap tent. We definitely see this with festival visitors who are becoming more and more international as flights becomes cheaper. We at Black Sheep Productions realize that the challenges are huge for the tourist industry, but there is also much potential to turn classic getaways into unique glampingexperiences you’ll never forget. We are working on that goal every day and we hope that we can let more and more people enjoy this unique way of long stay glamping both nationally and internationally. When we are asked to create a luxury sleeping unit, we aim for every comfort, including the possibility to lock your door, heating/ventilation, lighting and especially a private bathroom. Everything around this unit needs to fit in as well and that means a beautiful forest environment, a hot tub on the glamping site, or the possibility to be massaged. But the experience can also be enhanced by small things like the colour scheme of the bedroom or other extras like local specialties, such as the famous Belgian Trappist beers. From our Belgium-based office, we developed a range of unique sleeping and recreational accommodation for both permanent and semi-permanent use. Comfort, design and durability are the three pillars that we continuously keep in mind during development. See Black Sheep Production’s listing on page 51.

france Adeline Lenoir is a leading Glamping consultant in France and the creator of Hotes Insolites - a website dedicated to unusual accommodation in the country. In France we have two ways to name this special form of accommodation: glamping, and “hébergement insolite” which could be translated as “unusual accommodation”. For example, a wooden tent or a vintage caravan is totally glamping, but is not “unusual accommodation”, while an old jail becoming a hotel is unusual but is not glamping. And in general we use the phrase “hébergement insolite” much more than “glamping”. The movement started around 20 years ago with tipis and yurts, as an ecological way to receive guests, with dry toilets and solar shower outside. Sustainable tourism was just beginning, and the internet as well… To target a new type of clients, new offerings appeared with more comfort and luxury. Around a decade ago, treehouses became popular and then transparent inflatable bubbles and these are now the most popular forms of accommodation. If you look for a bubble with a spa or a cabin with a spa on a Saturday night, you may now not find it for 2018! About half the available glamping in France is ‘forest and wild stay’ such as Chemin de Traverse, set in a National park; or totally glamorous offering such as Cabanes des Grands Lacs. The biggest glampsites offer a lot of activities, or are situated next to an activity park, such as Bol d’Air or Echologia. The Huttopia group, a leader in the field, now runs 47 campsites in France, four in North America and two in China. Three franchisors are already in place, and four host associations are targeting the glampsite owners: 2 in campsites and 2 for the furnished rentals. According to Nicolas Sartorius, from Unicstay, the market was worth Euros 160 million in 2016, and should increase 20% each year in the following to be Euros 320 million in 2020. We have more than 1000 glampsites, with an average of 5 lodges per sites (not

counting those in the ‘classic’ campsites). The average price per night is 130€. The clientele is mainly couples in search of a romantic stay in nature, for a stay of generally maximum two nights because of the cost (20% more expensive than an hotel) and the relative simplicity of the accommodation. A large number of bookings are made as gift packages which we call ‘box’ as in Wonderbox or Smartbox, which are the market leaders. The concept is to buy a gift card in a box and the recipient can choose where to use it. The online booking website which specializes in glamping is “Abracadaroom”. Other notable online resources are Trip85, a free blog, Le guide des hébergements insolites, a main directory in France, created by a journalist and Hotels insolites, which is the top Google-ranked site for glamping for guests searching from the UK. There are also sustainable tourism networks for those who are eco-minded, such as: Vogageons Austrement and Voyages Pour La Planète. There are more than 200 builders specialising in glamplodges in France. Most of them are small companies employing five or fewer, some are old industries specialising in wooden products that are developing glamplodge concepts and a really small number are foreigners companies that are targeting the French market. I think the terminology surrounding the industry will soon become an issue as the word ‘insolite’ does not really cover everything and we will need to find a better way to describe ourselves. See Adeline’s listing on page 65.

the netherlands

Glamping is hot! When we analyze the online market, the supply and demand for ‘glamping’ accommodation increased explosively this past year. Large tour operators/chains now advertise with this term. Small-scale campsites call themselves ‘glampings’, and an everincreasing number of vacationers are familiar with the term. If we look at the number of online searches in The Netherlands for queries that are related to glamping, the number has doubled each year for the last few years. However, the glamping-market still only represents a small part of the traditional camping-market. The Netherlands remains a ‘camping country’. When investigating the possibilities and opportunities glamping offers, it is expected that the market will continue to grow. Dutch campground owners view glamping as a good way to generate more profit from an existing camping pitch. The glamping-accommodation, most often safari tents of small lodges (pods), require a (relatively) small investment which can quickly be recouped, despite the fact that the holiday season in The Netherlands is shorter in comparison to countries with a sunnier climate. Additionally, there has been a significant rise in safari tent providers who ‘rent’ pitches on camping grounds and place their tents, therefore carrying the burden of the initial investment. Because of this low threshold for camp ground owners, we see many new accommodations of a lower quality pop-up, which is unfortunate. Often times not much thought has been put into the location of the accommodation, the interior and furnishings, or the target group.

A safari tent without a private bathroom, placed on a small pitch in between large camper vans with awnings, does not provide the guests with the ambiance and the experience that should be associated with glamping. Ikea furniture, bunkbeds and cabinets do not help create a luxurious experience either.

Many campground owners do not realize this, and it truly is a missed opportunity. A glamping-entrepreneur once told me; “A guest should be given a completely different experience than the one he has at home (such as back-to-basic; sleeping in a Yurt where you have to build your own campfire to cook a meal) or the accommodation has to be even more luxurious than his own home. If the latter is not the case, guests will compare the accommodation with their home, and that is something you want to avoid at all costs.” I can only agree. The Dutch leisure industry should ruminate on the quality standards as well – when can you call an accommodation or campsite a ‘glamping’. There is still much uncertainty and confusion, even among vacationers as well. Fortunately, there are many Dutch entrepreneurs who know exactly what ‘glamping’ entails, and who have perfected the glamping-experiences for their guests down to the finest details. One of my favorite locations is Buitenplaats Beekhuizen, a relatively new and perfectly designed Glamping-concept. Here you can find several luxuriously equipped safari tents and pods tucked away in the woods near the National Park Veluwezoom (close to Arnhem). There are no ‘traditional’ camping pitches anymore. Every single accommodation has its own fire pit and a private bathroom, and each one has a stunning view. You can also stay in a safari tent with a private hot tub, or rent the bright orange Dutch-tub in the middle of the grounds. You can relax and unwind in the midst of nature, and it is highly probable you will spot a deer or a wild boar on the terrains in the morning, or in the surrounding woods. Apart from the popular safari tents, so-called ‘tiny houses’ are also increasing in popularity in The Netherlands. Droomparken, a chain of holiday parks, now offers this type of glamping accommodation on several locations across The Netherlands.

germany Sven Schuurmans is the creator of and - which are leading sites offering Glamping accommodation in The Netherlands and Germany. He is an expert in tourism and marketing.

Despite the fac t that Germany has a population that is almost 5 times greater than The Netherlands, the German glamping-market is relatively small in comparison. The term ‘glamping’ is not yet well known among the general public. However, the size of the country compensates for the size of the market, which means the glamping-market size can almost be compared with the Dutch glampingmarket. Germany is by tradition a ‘camping country’, which is why glamping is expected to acquire an increasingly larger percentage within the recreation industry. When we look at the German search behaviour, we see that the mobile home is a very popular holiday accommodation. The question remains whether this accommodation can be called ‘glamping’. When researching holiday destinations, Germans most often choose a location in their own country or near the coast. The Netherlands, Italy and Croatia are therefore popular holiday destinations. However, the number of glamping sites in Germany is relatively low. Existing camp sites often offer Pods, or the German/Austrian version of a hiker’s cabin or a round house/barrel. And yet, Germany also has a few unique and truly exceptional glamping concepts. For example, Kriebelland, close to Dresden, where you can stay in a spectacular tree house at a height of 20 meter above ground, in the treetops of 180-year-old oak trees. Another unique concept is Glamping Resorts Biosphäre Bliesgau in Saarland. Here you can spend the night in an organically shaped tiny house surrounded by nature. This

accommodation is comparable to a stay in a luxurious, yet compact, hotel room. In comparison to the Dutch glamping-market, the German market lags behind. Perhaps it needs more time to grow and develop since German vacationers still prefer camping in the traditional sense of the word, or favour a holiday accommodation such as a mobile home. We will see what the future holds over the next couple of years! Written by our Dutch/German correspondent: Sven Schuurmans of Glampings: an online magazine (platform) about unique glamping accommodations in Europe. People can search their for favourite glamping accommodation and book directly with the location or touroperator. Glampings focuses on the Dutch, Belgium and German markets. See Sven’s listing on page 64.

italy Italy is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world with all her attractions of climate, coastlines, mountains, national parks, ancient monuments, culture, art, food, history and fashion. Tourism is one of her fastest growing industries yet glamping is only just beginning to be something that more than a handful of people have heard of.

Lucy Friedlander is one of the creators of Spirits Intents which makes tipis, yurts and other canvas structures. She is also one of the founders of Heartland - a site in Abruzzo, Italy which implements sustainable development through slow tourism.

Whereas the Glamping trend in the UK evolved from ‘being outdoors but wanting a bit more comfort’, in Italy the first sites offering luxury accommodation in tents were top-end resorts wanting a more natural experience. Italians generally head to the beaches or the cities for holidays, preferring accommodation in B&Bs or hotels, and camping is only for the brave few, so the idea of holidaying in a tent has been slow to catch on for Italians, thus the market has previously been mainly for foreign tourists.

mainly ones offering luxury safari lodges or Mongolian yurts. Many areas in the North, such as Tuscany, Liguria, Piedmont, as well as Sicily are well-known tourist destinations, but many areas, especially in the South of the country, such as Abruzzo and Molise have many attractions for visitors, but are relatively unknown.

The Agriturismo (farm house holidays) movement is well established, very popular in Italy, allowing visitors to enjoy the benefits of scenic rural areas alongside experiencing a working farm. Food is a strong aspect in Italy so a big feature is the restaurant which uses food produced on the farm or the local area. They are often very high end with amenities such as swimming pools ,but the evolving need for a more ecological experience, closer to the earth is making agriturismi diversify by offering glamping structures. The existing glamping sites in Italy, from one unit offering B&B to full resorts, are almost exclusively in the North:

Abruzzo, for example, is known as the ‘green heart of Europe’ and has one third of its area, the largest in Europe, set aside for nature reserves and national parks. It has spectacular mountains, medieval villages, the beaches of the Adriatic coast, a rich cuisine and ancient traditions, but in some areas tourism has dwindled a lot in recent years, with a lack of funds invested in tourism and a declining rural population to support it. However things are turning around with the regions waking up to how sustainable tourism is a way to bring revenue to enhance the abandoned rural economies, with visitors supporting local industries. Glamping sites with an eco-focus are popping up all over these regions, as part of this movement, and farmers are diversifying with small glamping sites. Previously, the high taxes in Italy, made small businesses a bit of a struggle, but things are changing in that regard now with tax allowances made for enterprises with an ecological focus. So with the agrituirsimi needing to be closer to nature and sustainable tourism taking off to energise rural economies many glamping suppliers are recognising this and have expanded their market into Italy…and there is this glamping explosion happening in Italy. See Lucy’s listing on page 32.

japan Glamping is increasingly popular in Japan and is usually on a large scale and extremely luxurious. Activities are often very popular with Japanese glamping sites, as is the emphasis of getting close to nature – with some sites situated near natural springs, or volcanoes. The first glamping resort in Japan was Hoshinoya Fuji where the accommodation was imaginatively built among the maple trees as a series of ‘boxes’ with the famous Fuji mountain in sight, as well as stunning views of the Kawaguchi Lake. The resort has its own chef and offers guests dinners cooked in dutch ovens on a grand terrace, which can be enjoyed alongside music concerts and a number of activities, including horse riding and canoeing.

Glamping Japan is a dedicated website designed to inform the Japanese market about the delights of glamping. The site also reviews and publishes news on glamping in Japan. The company is also keen to establish networks and negotiations between suppliers and overseas buyers and Japanese distributors. The company can also provide advice for those looking for land to establish glamping in Japan.

Glamping is growing in Japan with new sites opening up to a very high standard all the time. In the region of Ibukiyama a new concept called Glamp Element featuring lotus tents, domes, raindrop pods wood cabins and villas is opening in April 2018. The wood cabins overlook a lake and have two storeys. The resort also features a high-end restaurant, canoeing and golf. Glamp Element is situated in the Shiga prefecture of Japan. The cost of constructing the impressive Glamp Element cost 200 million yen and was carried out over two periods with a construction area of 20,000 square meters in the first period and 40,000 square metres in the second. Other notable sites in Japan include the NESTA Resort Kobe which opened in July 2016 – the name is an acronym of Nature, Entertainment, Spa, Sports, Technology, Activity. This is also a very large-scale glamping resort – but this time with a strong sports and entertainment theme, based in the vast nature reserve of Miki City. See Glamping Japan’s listing on page 93. 15

spain Spain has been a hugely popular tourist destination ever since the 60s and 70s, thanks to a mild climate boasting 300 days of sunshine a year, almost 5,000 km of coastline along the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean, coupled with great cultural cities and stunning countryside. Spain is the second most visited country in the world, with 82 million tourists last year who spent around €87bn. Brits made up the largest numbers with 16.9 million visitors last year followed by French, Germans, Italian and Americans. Therefore it’s not too surprising that the glamping industry is hugely popular in Spain with over 350 glamping resorts listed on from tree houses to yurts and pods to teepees. Of course GlampingHub itself was the creation of Spaniard David Troya, who after overhearing a conversation about glamping whilst studying at the University of San Francisco, returned to his home town of Seville and launched the website in 2012. Today this world-leading online booking platform manages around 30,000 unique accommodations in 80 different countries. The Spanish camping sector has always been popular and this has become the second holiday accommodation offer after hotels, generating a turnover of €1.5bn per year. The arrival of bungalows was a revolution to the 1,170 Spanish campsites, many of which have since upgraded their image and offer by incorporating glamping into their resorts. Apparently of the 770,000 available camping spaces, bungalows now account for 50 per cent of the offer with the remaining for caravans, campervans and tents. Meanwhile the evolution has gone beyond accommodation with large scale entertainment services now on offer, aquatic parks replacing swimming pools and high end catering and spa facilities. The glamping options in Spain vary from Balinese and Tahitan themed bungalows in the large Marjal Camping

Karen Southall is a leading trade journalist living in Spain and an expert on leisure and tourism. She is the founder of Rounabout Spain - a website dedicated to kids and leisure in the area where she lives. She is a keen glamper. and Resort on the Costa Blanca for example to tree houses, ecolodges and cabins at the Monte Holiday Ecoturismo resort in the Guadarrama National Park in Madrid to luxurious Mongolian yurts in Lanzarote. Newcomer to the glamping scene in Spain is the beautifully tranquil Riverheart Retreats which opened in June 2017 in Coin, a traditional Spanish rural village located 30km inland from Marbella on the Costa del Sol. Riverheart offers accommodation via cosy wooden cabanas, a Sami Lavvu Scandinavian teepee, a geodesic dome and a bell tent. The accommodation can be linked with in-house workshops and courses in anything from yoga, meditation, painting, Qi Gong or creative writing plus working project exchange programmes. Founder Samantha Short said: “My family and I were looking for somewhere to run a retreat that was warm with good transport links and a friendly atmosphere but we’d never heard of Coin and were brought here purely by chance on the last day of our week-long house hunting trip across Spain. “We fell in love with the place as we walked through the gate and within half an hour we’d put an offer in and moved in four months later. I think Spain is very open to visitors and travellers and the glamping market is being recognised as a growing part of the Spanish economy. I think its popularity lies in a desire to get back to the basics in beautiful weather.” 17

united Tim Rees is the Managing Director of Quality Unearthed, Quality Cottages and Unearthed Festival. By day, he heads up this multimillion pound Welsh holiday cottages enterprise and by night he retires to his Mongolian yurt where he meditates and practices yoga.

“Cornwall, Devon and Dorset are popular for holidaymakers seeking warmer weather and beaches,” stated the report, with Wales also being mentioned as having a large share in the glamping market, with “sites being located on the coastline… [with sites] in the vicinity of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and Snowdonia [being] particularly popular”.

The need to have unique experiences that fit our values as well as our budgets has become important in the recent economic climate. With the world and wages simultaneously becoming smaller, glamping has become an appealing option for travelers worldwide. The UK has seen a marked increase in Brits taking staycations over the last few years, with 4 out of 5 citizens stating that they would rather have an adventure at home, according to reports by Go Outdoors. It is not just the British public that have decided to spend their holidays in the British countryside – according to our research, visits to the UK from the EU were up by 7% in 2017 to 8.3 million.

Between 2016 and 2018, Quality Unearthed have noticed a marked uptake in glamping consultations and the onboarding of structures in coastal areas such as Dorset and Pembrokeshire, as well as rural gateway counties such as Somerset and Kent. Research conducted by our internal team indicates that areas of the UK where glamping will be expanding over the next 12 months are North Wales, where the mountaineering and expanses of wild landscape draws walkers and hikers year upon year, and for similar reasons, the Peak District is piquing the interest of those looking to set up glampsites, as glampers look for new views and fresh vistas for their outdoor experience.

The outdoor hospitality industry as a whole saw an increase of 1% in 2017, according to reports by IBIS Worldwide; despite this seemingly small percentage, this equates to around a whopping £3bn revenue. This is a surprisingly solid growth considering the trends of economic decreases in other sectors due to many different factors – the stock market crash of 2008, right through to conflict abroad and, most recently, Brexit. The pound’s decline as a result has had an impact on farm diversification. This fact is supported by studies from the Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism, which found that the outdoor hospitality industry has achieved a “stellar performance during the recent global financial slowdown”. Upon analysis, there is further explanation for the rapid expansion of the glamping industry, as the service offers customers exactly what they need - a luxurious family holiday in or near to nature at an affordable price that has the mod-cons they require. The report further highlights this point by identifying the concentration of preferable glamping locations, with the South West providing the best location according to the IBIS report. 18

Glamping, the portmanteau of glamorous camping, encompasses many structure types, making it perfect for almost everyone. Those who appreciate the grass roots movement that introduced this type of holiday will still search for a canvas structure for their staycations, and will perhaps be a little more adventurous, opting for a digital detox break. However, with the rising costs of hotel accommodation leaving those looking for a little luxury looking elsewhere, some of the sumptuous treehouses on offer come fully equipped with hot tubs, copper baths, televisions and charge points – you no longer have to rough it to have a fabulous glamping holiday. According to our own web analytics data, treehouses are by far the most popular accommodation type for guests and enquired for by owners in 2017. Due to the idea of glamping becoming commonplace, this ever-evolving industry is organically splintering into separate types of glamping, accommodating all people from all ages and all walks of life. For example, searches for group glamping increased exponentially in 2017, with glampsites changing their regulations to allow for hen parties, birthday parties and wedding receptions. This idea

kingdom of sharing the outdoors with your loved ones is both animalistic, a return to a totemic collective experience, as well as being accessible to older persons, not exempting their infant counterparts. The increase of popularity of glamping is further supported by the results of Google Trends. The term glamping is now a widely used and recognised word which encompasses many “back to nature” modes of holiday and was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2016, showing the sharp incline in its usage and its eager assimilation into the terminology of the holiday industry. Online searches for the term “glamping” have shown an upward trend over the past five years, and are forecast to grow, with the expected seasonal fluctuations. Most searches originate from the UK and Ireland looking for UK glamping breaks; however, there is a slow increase in the amount of interest being generated by a global audience. So, what is the future of glamping? Our director, Tim Rees often says “If a static caravan can still be popular after 50 years, we are pretty sure that quality glamping structures will be, too”. According to our results, we can only expect good things – we are fast following in the footsteps of France, who have had a stellar few years with year-round, solid structures. However, there is a growing need for research into the trends of the industry, with the Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism highlighting it as “an area in great need of academic research”. Only then can we get a clear picture of the true scale of the fast-paced maturity of this fledgling market. For now, we’re excited at the expansion of an industry that bring people closer to nature and each other and can’t wait to be part of the next evolution of the most popular holiday phenomenon to hit the UK in the last 50 years. See Tim’s listings on pages 64 and 66.

usa Glamping is no fad - it’s a movement and it’s growing and developing at a fast pace in the US. The team behind the Glamping Show in the UK have recognised this and are launching the first ever Global Glamping Summit in April 2018 in Denver, Colorado in association with leading accommodation booking service Glamping Hub USA. Americans in general are passionate about the outdoors and spend an aggressive amount of money on outdoor recreation every year. We have seen growth exceeding 100 per cent year on year especially in our main markets, California, New York, Washington, Texas and Oregon. And there is also a big demand with corporate retreats and weddings. The idea and concept of glamping is still relatively new in the US – we are still scratching the surface regarding the market opportunity because of the purchasing power the US consumer has. More and more Americans are changing the way they vacation and our site is proof that this shift is happening at a rapid rate. The US is a country of 319 million people and 3.8 million square miles of beautiful landscape. So that means landowners and business owners are seeing the great revenue potential in starting a glampsite. The combination of new glampsites opening up daily and new customers coming to our site looking for a place to book is a very good sign and the reason we are so optimistic and why we think we are still seeing a lot of room for growth. We’re not dealing with a saturated market so there is room for accommodation owners to

be creative and capture their desired growth. The two most popular states for glamping on our site are California and New York. It’s the combination of having big natural parks and extremely large urban cities in close proximity, such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City. The fact is that a majority of our sites have some kind of outdoor activity that naturally goes with the accommodation. Everything from mountain biking, river rafting, rock climbing, fishing, biking, you name it. Right now in the US, the tree house is our most popular accommodation. The West Coast in particular is home to some of the most beautiful tree houses with the most spectacular views. Bigger hotel chains and ranches are also picking up on the trend and are experimenting with glamping. They often have the capital and the land to give the guests something different without having to go all-in. They will often start with a few tents or cabins to figure out if it is a viable option for them and go from there. See Glamping Hub’s listing on page 64.

Certainly Wood is the UK’s largest specialist supplier of British kiln dried hardwood and the pioneer of kiln drying logs. Having developed its business around the domestic wood burning stove industry and recommended by most of the UK’s stove manufacturers and distributors, there is now significant growth in the glamping sector. There is strong demand for outdoor camp fires and firepits but also for yurts, tipis and log cabins that have their own stoves. Quality firewood is absolutely crucial for all applications to minimise smoke, provide a clean burn and maximise heat output. Most importantly, firewood provides campsites with a huge opportunity to increase revenue.

The Glamping Show is unique in that it is the only show of its kind in the UK that caters purely for the glamping industry. It offers suppliers to the glamping sector an undiluted three-day sales opportunity and the perfect platform on which to showcase their products and services to a dedicated glamping audience. Since its inception in 2015 it has fast become a key annual fixture in the glamping calendar. It is an event where suppliers, prospective and established glamping site owners plus highprofile supporters of the industry gather to immerse themselves in the business of glamping.
