How Surefoot Transformed Ski Boots

It all started 40 years ago with Bob Shay’s sore feet. Shay grew up an avid skier in the era of massproduced factory ski boots, built to fit the average

foot. Shay’s feet were not average, nor are most people’s, he found out. He loved to ski Park City but often had to quit skiing early because his feet hurt. “I was in a lot of pain after skiing. I would have to go in for lunch and take my ski boots off for a while. Sometimes I’d have to stop skiing before I really wanted to,” he recalls. For Shay, the solution was obvious—build a better ski boot. “I learned how to make ski boots using my own feet,” he laughs.

Shay learned well. Today, he and his brother Russ are coowners of Surefoot, a Park City-based maker of custom ski boots, liners and orthotics. Now a respected leader in the industry, its phenomenal growth and success since opening its first tiny shop here almost four decades ago is an inspiring story. So much so that Andy Bigford, former editor of Ski Magazine, once said, “Surefoot has done more to keep skiers happy than any retail store in the world.” Opening retail stores at major and iconic ski resorts across North America and Europe, Surefoot now stands at the top of the heap. However, like most success stories, it didn’t happen overnight.

The long journey began in 1982 in Shay’s Park Meadows

garage, where he started experimenting with crude foam and cork, carving and cobbling together his early attempts at a better, form-fitting boot. By 1986, Shay knew his boots were good and opened his first Surefoot retail store at the base of Park City Mountain Resort. The modest shop is still in the same location today.

When Shay’s brother Russ moved to Park City in the mid-1980s, the pair joined forces, working together in their continuing quest for a better boot. As a professional ski racer, Russ provided the perfect platform for testing their boots. He moved to Vail, Colorado in 1987 to open and manage their second retail store there.

Now, 40 years later, Surefoot ski boots and orthotics are industry leaders worldwide. With 26 retail stores scattered among iconic ski resorts on two continents, Shay estimates the company has now sold well over 750,000 ski boots. Not bad for a couple of guys who just wanted to make quality ski boots that didn’t hurt!

In 2001, Surefoot was named Ski Magazine’s Gold Medal “National Shop of the Year” and has been named a regional Gold Medal “Shop of the Year” every year since.

THE CROSSCOUNTRY TRAIL GUIDE

Park City has long been a destination for cross-country enthusiasts. Whether you’re searching for an intense cardio workout or just want some alone time—these trails offer something for everyone.

Round Valley

Located near the National Ability Center, the 25 kilometers of trails are perfect for every skill level. Plus, the paths are dogfriendly, so you can bring your furry friend along for the fun. Additionally, there’s plenty of parking available, so you won’t have to worry about finding a spot. And best of all, there are no entrance fees, so you can enjoy cross-country skiing all day—everyday if you choose.

Basin Recreation Trails

Explore 25 kilometers of groomed multipurpose trails connecting the Utah Olympic Park with Willow Creek Park. The tracks are a great way to explore the area, as they offer scenic views along Swaner Nature Preserve, through neighborhoods, over bridges and a creek.

RTS Loop

Generally considered an easy route, this trail is close to 4 kilometers long. The loop can be accessed on the path behind the outlet mall or above Utah Olympic Park. In the winter, the RTS Loop is only used for cross-country skiing so it makes for a peaceful, entertaining track.

Soldier Hollow

As one of the venues for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, the 25 kilometers of trails, located just outside of Park City, offer world-class biathlon and cross-country skiing. In addition, there are several winter programs to participate in if you want to make it a full day of adventure.

Owner and Agent Clair Christoffersen explains, “We’re a very local handson company.” C&W offers a litany of insurance coverage from business and home, to auto, life, and health insurance.

Everyday life can cause a bit of a time crunch, which can particularly affect one’s beauty regimen. No need to fret our active readers, for 2023 is the year for fast and easy!

For Starters

A relaxed aura doesn’t require spending hours in a face mask or mud bath. In fact, all you need is a few focused minutes:

• Begin by slicking your hair back into a tight ponytail or a colorful fabric headband. It only takes a moment, but provides a styled, finished appearance.

• Next, prep your face with a gentle exfoliant to smooth over any dry patches. Then, tap a bit of moisturizer on your trouble spots for added care.

• P lace a drop of sugar scrub on your fingertip and lightly apply to your lips. Gently remove the scrub and your lips will be refreshed, smooth and soft.

• From there, apply a 3-in-1 application of tint, moisturizer and sunscreen to even out your skin tones and provide protection from the elements.

For Some Added Pop

After the essentials are completed, these quick additions will enhance your casual look:

• I f you wake with puffy eyes, we have a “pro-tip” that really does work! Dab a dollop of Preparation H under your eyes and let it sit for a moment.

• W hile the dollop is soaking in, keep your kissable lips hydrated by applying your favorite chapstick or lip balm. (Tinted options add a nice hint of color.)

• Next, play up your brows with a makeup brush. The full, fluffy brow is modern and cool and takes minimal effort.

What could be more fun than sharing a pot of fondue with friends after a long day on the mountain? Whether you’re enjoying a casual meal with fellow adventurers or looking for a romantic dinner for two, fondue is the perfect way to enjoy a winter’s evening.

Goldener Hirsch, Auberge Resorts Collection

Goldener Hirsch fondue is made from four unique traditional alpine cheeses imported directly from Switzerland. The hot, melty dish is then paired with locally sourced trimmings like cauliflower, broccoli, green apple, and toasted baguette. Kick it up a notch by including lamb meatballs, wagyu beef or confit mushrooms foraged from Oregon. Sharable for up to three people.

Midway Mercantile

The Raclette Fondue dish is a combination of raclette, gruyere and swiss cheeses sourced from Switzerland to create a creamy, melty cheese of goodness. Accompaniments include focaccia bread, apples and sweet peppers, a unique edition to the dish. In addition, Midway has a “Swiss” theme throughout town and this particular fondue is a nod to the area. It’s a family favorite for all ages, served year-round and sharable for up to three people.

Blue Boar Inn

Not your traditional swiss cheese blend, the fondue at the Blue Boar Inn is a smoked gouda cheese with a Porter beer to give this dish a caramelly, smoky flavor. Served with grilled broccolini and shishito peppers and spicy andouille sausage, also not your average accompaniments. So many divine flavors will hit your palette all at once. Considered sharable for up to three people.

Fletcher’s

A tasty spin on a classic dish, the blue cheese fondue at Fletcher’s is a mixture of blue cheese local promontory cheddar from Beehive, with a bit of parmesan for an added depth of flavor. Kirsch liquor (cherry flavor) is included in the base where all the cheeses marry together. Served with diced buffalo and grass-fed beef that is pan sautéed to a perfect medium and toasted brioche cubes tossed in clarified butter. Finally, the fondue itself is garnished with a port reduction and fresh chives. Sharable for up to three people.

The next time you’re out for dinner, may we suggest introducing a new tradition? Instruct the table to read their menu from the bottom up and to decide on a dessert first. This charming exercise ensures that everyone ends their meal with a sweet delicacy.

To help get you started, here are local delights appealing to adults and kids alike.

Fuego Limon

At Fuego Bistro and Pizzeria , the house specialty is the Fuego Limon—a lemon cookie with white chocolate chips baked in a wood-fired oven and topped with lemon gelato. Tip: Ask for it à la mode.

Sopapillas

Spice up your meal with Sopapillas, or “little pillows” at Loco Lizard . The chef hand rolls and fries fresh tortillas and tops them with cinnamon, powdered sugar and honey. Tip: Extra napkins please.

Root Beer Float

Flanagan’s on Main offers desserts made especially for “the little wee ones.” Our recommendation is the timeless root beer float made with rich ice cream and sweet frothy root beer. Tip: Grab a straw and share this classic.

Mango with Sweet Sticky Rice

Chef Yanee, a native of Bangkok, brings a tasty balance of traditional and modern to her family-inspired recipes at

Bangkok Thai on Main . Yanee’s speciality dessert is tangy mango served with sweet coconut sticky rice. Tip: Perfect if you prefer a lighter treat.

Soft-Serve Ice Cream

While ordering a fresh sandwich with dipping sauce, add a cup or cone of soft serve ice cream from the Big Dipper Children of all ages will delight in vanilla, pineapple or twist topped with favorites like caramel sauce, chocolate syrup or M & M’s. Tip: Take it to-go and browse Main Street.

Lava Cake

Also on Main Street, the Italian restaurant, Buona Vita features the ever-popular Lava Cake. This warm chocolate cake with a heart of flowing chocolate is the ultimate guilty pleasure. Tip: Superb for sharing.

Crème Brulée

At Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, this decadent delight is perfect in its simplicity, vanilla bean custard with raw sugar crust, garnished with plump fresh berries. Tip: Order a cup of cocoa for a dreamy pairing.

Pain Au Chocolat

Hill’s Kitchen thrills clients with homemade creations. Their sinful Pain Au Chocolat is a flaky puff pastry filled with rich chocolate and is expertly prepared by Executive Pastry Chef Jessie Rae Nakoneczny. Tip: Ask for it hot.
