The sun is high in the sky, children’s laughter fills the air and summer escapades beckon. The Wasatch Back is the perfect place for an afternoon of fun or a full weekend excursion. Check out these 12 adventures and see how many you can complete.

A GOLFER’S DREAM Spectacular courses await

Golf reigns supreme among time-honored outdoor sports in and around Park City.

Several world-class courses lie within a few minutes drive of historic Main Street. Here is an introduction to many of the amazing courses awaiting adventurous golfers.

Soldier Hollow Golf Courses (public) The Soldier Hollow Golf Course, in Midway, is actually a complex of two 18-hole courses, both open to the public.

Part of the sprawling Wasatch Mountain State Park, the three words that best describe the courses: views, diversity, long.

The 7700-yard “Gold” course winds through stands of native scrub oak trees and grasses, it features dramatic elevation changes on almost every hole.

The lower, flatter “Silver” course is a parkland/ meadowland layout, described as the “tamer” of the two.

Choosing the proper tee box depending on skill level is key for players here.

Park Meadows Country Club Designed by golf giant Jack Nicklaus, this signature course features wide fairways and abundant bunkers. It was named one of the top 10 courses in the state by Golf Digest magazine.

The three words that best describe it: classic, sandy, and unpredictable.

“You can walk it. Play it a couple of times a week and there’s still variety and excitement. Precise approach shots are key,” said Eric Johnson, PGA Director of Golf at the Meadows.

Tuhaye At Talisker Club This magnificent Mark O’Meara-designed course lies at the heart of the Talisker Club Tuhaye community. The three words that best describe it: scenic, natural, wide.

Respecting the setting, O’Meara chose to blend the course into the natural landscape rather than bulldoze it. The fairways wind through stands of sagebrush, groves of scrub oak trees and native grasses. Many of the tee shots look “scary,” according to Thomas Barksdale, director of golf at Tuhaye.

He also says some tee shots on the back nine must clear an intimidating series of ravines.

Canyons (public) This unorthodox course is literally carved out of a mountainside adjacent to Vail’s sprawling Canyons ski resort.

The three words that best describe the course: vertical, challenging, fun.

Canyons Director of Golf Justin Johnson counsels firsttimers at the course to leave their drivers in the bag, just have fun and don’t bother to keep score.

Promontory Club There are actually two world-class courses at Promontory, both designed by icons of golf. The three words that best describe them: character, longest, widest.

The incomparable Jack Nicklaus designed the Painted Valley course. At an astounding 8,100 yards from the back tees, it’s one of the longest and most challenging links courses in the country.

Pete Dye designed the Canyons course, draped over some seriously rugged terrain. Though several hundred yards shorter, the fairways demand accuracy. Multiple tee boxes provide scoring opportunities for all players, no matter their skill level.

Red Ledges The Jack Nicklaus-designed Red Ledges golf course melds perfectly into stunning, red-rock scenery in the eastern foothills overlooking nearby Heber Valley. Three words that best describe it: elevated, bunkered, risky.

Many of the tee boxes are elevated, inviting soaring shots to well-bunkered, meticulously groomed greens.

The fairways are wide, winding through red rock, sage and juniper trees.

“Quite a few holes are challenging, however the 16th provides a split fairway leading to the ultimate risk/reward situation for your second shot,” says Jon Paupore, Director of Golf. “A well-played shot to the left fairway leaves the player with a short wedge shot and the perfect angle to attack the green.”

Even though Red Ledges is a private facility, their Jim McLean Golf School is unique in that it is open to the public.

Some of the most spectacular parts of the Wasatch Back are tucked away in remote locations, best experienced by immersing yourself in the rugged landscape. But getting “down and dirty” in the backcountry is easier than you might think thanks to these local outfitters.

Wasatch Excursions Getting you off the beaten path is the primary mission for Wasatch Excursions (WE), which prides itself on being the only company authorized to offer guided tours on the pristine 22,000 acres of the Wasatch Mountain State Park.

WE’s tours cover approximately 25 miles round trip, climbing 2,500 feet in elevation from base camp to the top of the ridgeline and offering 360-degree views of the Heber Valley and American Fork Valley before dropping to the valley below. WE is able to accommodate all skill levels and can structure trips to satisfy personal requests.

Zipline Utah Looking to feel that breeze in your hair, sun on your face and perhaps fling yourself from an 80-foot-high tower? Then take your adventure to new heights at Zipline Utah.

Located in picturesque Deer Creek State Park, Zipline Utah offers seven different tour packages involving some or all of the zipline sections, which can easily accommodate a variety of ability levels. But for anyone with a “go big or go home” mentality, Zipline Utah boasts several recordsetting experiences, including the world’s longest zipline over water—the 3,900-foot Screaming Falcon zipline and the world’s longest continual zipline course, which comprises a full two-mile loop that never touches the ground.

While guides are with you every step and zip of the way, and you’re continuously tethered to the course for safety, expect to find yourself outside your comfort zone at times.

However, overcoming challenges and experiencing the excitement of adventure with family and friends is a true bonding experience.

High Country Adventure Take in the spectacular scenery on a whitewater-fueled float down the Provo River with High Country Adventure (HCA).

walls and the majestic Mt. Timpanogos. HCA offers heavyduty river tubes and consider a double tube and/or a cooler tube to bring along snacks and drinks to round out your day.

For an additional fee, HCA also offers wetsuits, river booties and small paddles.

Tubing is recommended for kids 12+, but kids 8+ can participate on a double tube with a strong adult swimmer.

Smaller rafts that hold 3-5 people are available for parents with younger children or less confident swimmers. Bear in mind, this isn’t an amusement park “lazy river”—several Class I and II rapids as well as other obstacles can appear along the route, and adventurers should be confident in their swimming ability.

Heber Valley is proud to be the home of Wasatch Plein Air Paradise. Celebrating its 15th year, the fine art painting competition and sale is the largest in Utah. Painters of all levels enter multiple painting competitions vying for $20,000 in cash and awards. Wasatch Plein Air Paradise is hosted by the Midway Art Association, a group of local artists, collectors and art enthusiasts formed to encourage and support our growing art community through education and sales.

Beginning June 23rd and running through July 4th, over 100 artists from Utah and surrounding areas gather in Midway to paint “en plein air”—in the open air. The event is free and open to the public and features a main competition, local paint outs and a 90-minute quick draw and auction, which is a favorite of attendees as they watch talented artists complete a masterwork in minutes.

It’s no wonder the festival attracts viewers from all over the region and continually grows in popularity each year.

In addition to community education classes offered at the Wasatch campus, there is also a plethora of academic programs and classes for students who want to pursue an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree or even a Master’s in Education.

“An exciting program that we have on our campus is the academic program, Wasatch Area Resort Management Program,” said Beka Grulich, Wasatch Back Area Director for UVU. “This is a program for juniors and seniors. They take all of their classes at the Wasatch Campus, but they have amazing paid internships in some of the best hotels in Park City. They are in Montage, St. Regis, BlueSky, so they are really living and working as part of the community in the Wasatch Back. When they are done with the program, they will have a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management with real-world experience.”

UVU is a regional dual mission university, currently enrolling over 40,000 students and offering degrees ranging from certificates to master degrees across their campuses.

Their open enrollment policy welcomes any student wanting an education in their field of choice. No specific test scores or grade point average is required to enroll. UVU is also the place to be for international students who can benefit from specific training before returning home.
