MIDWAY ICE CASTLES The Midway Ice Castles have been attracting visitors from around the state and country for years. The frozen attraction is built each winter by professional ice artists with thousands upon thousands of icicles. Experience all this winter wonderland has to offer, with the LED-lit sculptures, ice slides, mazes and tunnels.

There’s also fountains, sleigh rides and a private arctic alcove.

LOCAL CELEBRITY, FORMER MAYOR DANA WILLIAMS

First taking office as mayor just weeks before the Olympics, Dana Williams helped guide Park City through the explosion of excitement surrounding the Games, the post-Games surge of development, a recession, then an extraordinary economic recovery and so much more during an extremely eventful three terms. Though he has seen a great deal of change in his favorite place on Earth since 1964, he remains as devoted as ever. He doesn’t even disparage the change in traffic saying, “We’re lucky to have so many driving in to keep our economy on track. We couldn’t do it without them.”

His best traffic remedy: “Put on the long version of LA Woman by the Doors and you’ll be there in no time, most likely before the song even ends.”

And we cannot forget that among his numerous talents, Williams is also an actual rock star. He spent more than 25 years as the guitarist for Motherlode Canyon Band playing large and small venues including clubs, concerts, festivals, and fundraisers before forming his newest band, Silver King Rocking Band. His most recent gigs include Mountain Town Music’s Door to Door Tour. Donating his time to be part of the nonprofit effort to continue providing live music in a safe way during COVID, he became part of a program to bring free music to the doorsteps of the Park City community, performing in cul-de-sacs, streets, backyards or wherever possible.

Since leaving office in 2014, Williams enjoys running a small home improvement and handyman business appropriately named Bar Rocking R Handyman, playing music and choosing the community activities he’s still involved in, and all while spending precious time with his favorite people and places in Park City.

But living in Park City, in particular, comes with a unique set of perks that residents and visitors alike can embrace at 7,000 feet, making it the place we all want to work, play and live.

But is this town’s superior health due to the world-class ski resorts, cycling routes and expansive trail system—and Parkites’ ambition to tackle them? Or does living at altitude really give folks an extra edge? People living at higher altitudes tend to be healthier, but definitive evidence as to why remains somewhat elusive. Either way, here are a few options—and potential reward—for living Park City’s “high” life to the fullest.

Several studies indicate that living at higher elevations can lead to higher levels of heart health. Some theories suggest that the reduction in atmospheric pressure forces your body to work harder to take in oxygen, thus improving cardiovascular fitness and reducing metabolic syndrome—a cluster of conditions that occur together increasing risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Another theory proposes that better access to vitamin D due to being closer to the sun results in fewer heart problems.

Maybe it’s because people simply exercise more or are generally more active in Park City, but according to a U.S. News & World

Report, Summit County ranks in the top five communities nationally for low obesity and is among the top 100 healthiest communities. Other theories suggest that it takes more energy for the body to function at higher elevations, which could contribute to lower weight, while another infers that altitude affects the hormones that control hunger and decreases appetite.

One factor that definitely contributed to Summit County’s top ranking is our proximity to a park. With five national parks located within Utah and trailheads literally around every corner, it’s no surprise the study found that 75 percent of all Utahns live within 0.5 mile of a park.

No matter how close to heaven you call home, don’t expect altitude alone to spare you from poor health. But it appears stronger hearts, better fitness levels and longer lives are just a few of the health perks of living in Park City’s elevation, or as we like to call it, the sweet spot.

FLANAGAN’S ON MAIN You can’t help but feel the luck of the Irish in this Irish pub inspired eatery. They may not serve green beer but there are plenty of other Irish menu options to get “jiggy” with.

What to order: Reuben Rolls Similar to the sandwich, but fried to a golden brown with a pastry exterior. Inside you will find the classic fixings, corned beef, swiss cheese and sauerkraut. Dip to your hearts delight in the house made thousand island.

What to drink: Irish Coffee Brewed coffee with Bailey’s and Tullamore Dew, topped off with a generous amount of whipped cream. Perfect for a pick-me-up.

SPIN CAFE Known for the casual atmosphere and fun spin on American cuisines, a visit to Spin Cafe is a lot like visiting a friend’s home.

The atmosphere is one of warmth, complete with a fireplace that gives you the sense you could linger for a while.

What to order: Japanese Roulette Shishito peppers rolled in their 7-flavor spice and Redmond Real Salt and then flashcharred. Served with a yogurt tahini sauce to cool things down a bit.

What to drink: Bee Sting This gin and tonic with a spin translate well into colder months. Beehive Jack Rabbit Gin, a splash of Midori melon liqueur and orange juice topped off with tonic.

MIDWAY MERCANTILE This pleasant eatery has a comfy feel from the moment you enter and is later enhanced by the staff, ambiance and its food and drink offerings.

What to order: Hearth Roasted Bacon Wrapped Dates Because, why not? These tasty morsels are bite-size dates wrapped in bacon with a layer of bleu cheese moussé, a drizzle of balsamic and a delightful crunch of toasted hazelnut to finish them off.

What to drink: Rosemary Gimlet Alpine Summit Gin, Elderflower Liqueur, Lime and fresh Rosemary. There is something about that sprig of rosemary that brings all the seasons together in the glass.

SHABU Step into one of the most eclectic styled restaurants in Park City and enjoy some of the best craft cocktails and Asian fusion dishes this side of the slopes. Your eye will be drawn to the 3D metal Chinese dragon making its way from table to table along the back wall.

What to order: Steamed Bao Buns with BBQ Pork Belly Order a few if you have more than two people because no one can eat just one. The light, airy bun is complimented with sweet chili and Asian slaw atop the perfectly prepared pork belly.

THE FOOD SCENE WITH ERNESTO ROCHA

Since 1991, Jose “Ernesto” Rocha has been a fixture in the food scene in and around Park City. Ernesto notes that the food industry in Park City has “grown up tremendously,” and Ernesto has grown with it. Ernesto’s warm smile, creative culinary art, and enthusiasm for food can be enjoyed at the new Black Rock Ridge Resort’s Overlook Restaurant.

“A restaurant is an experience,” notes Ernesto. “You have to make it fun. Fun for the guests and fun for the employees.”

Stemming from his vast knowledge, Ernesto’s menu is eclectic.

He explains, “I love the influence from different cultures. I love colors. I love textures.” He adds, “I like to focus on what we have here.”

The Overlook’s menu offers depth and a variety of choices, following the seasonality of local foods and utilizing Utah’s ingredients from the varied climate.
