The schoolwear market has shown huge resolve and resilience and we would like to thank you for all your collaborative support. And as we look ahead to the reimagination that is necessary, we feel confident that there are many opportunities, as we all embrace both the uncertainty and possibilities together. And so we bring you this first digital catalogue in the schoolwear market, to support the changing ways parents and schools are consuming information. It will be a constantly evolving resource, allowing for more regular updates and more meaningful interactions.

This issue of the digital catalogue is packed-full of great assets for you to use in your conversations and connections with your schools. Here’s a look back at the highlights…

We heard from Mia in a special blog post where we discovered how her community activism was being impacted by life on the inside and picked up some great tips on how to save the world from your sofa.

I’ve been using ocean hero which every search you do it gets rid of 1 plastic item from the sea and also we make our own beeswax cover for food. Because of lockdown there are hardly any cars on the road so I would want it to stay like that. More people go out on their bikes and are using less plastic bottles.

A keen conservationist, Helen is one of our senior ambassadors and a formidable eco-influencer. Her views on the role of nature during lockdown made for compelling reading.

During lockdown, life for my family and friends became simpler. We spent more time enjoying our immediate surroundings, whether it be sitting in the garden, observing the local wildlife, or walking in parks and the countryside. This has given us the opportunity to build a deeper connection with nature and to really appreciate the natural environments within our locality. I believe that people need to value nature in order to be motivated to protect it. Natural environments have played an important role in supporting people’s wellbeing during lockdown, and I hope that those who recognise this will be motivated to help create a more sustainable future through their individual actions.

Anxiety in children is a worrying trend that has no doubt been exacerbated by the events of 2020. In response to this we wanted to introduce a new voice of expertise to our communications with the appointment of Manchester-based Psychotherapist Sarie Taylor as our Resident Anxiety Coach. Sharing her insights on a range of subjects including anxiety, returning to school and resilience, Sarie helped us to sensitively navigate the unique context of back to school in 2020.

We are all facing an ever-changing new norm, and often one of the biggest fears we have is that we might get it wrong, and the consequences of that. It’s a big change for both parents and children, and we can lead this change to pave the way for our children.

How dressing down became a global trend

After finding comfort in our loungewear during the pandemic, a shift in our wardrobe habits was evident in the back to school season. RACHEL COOKSON, PETITES MODES

Investing in their website during lockdown proved to be a savvy move for Petites Modes who were on the frontfoot when it came to managing the demand for online sales as Rachel Cookson reveals;

When the shop was closed during lockdown we came into work every day and used the time to prepare the website for what was to come. Anticipating how our website would be used during back to school was key to us navigating the surge in demand for online shopping during August and September. We invested in a new hosting package to enable us to clean up the homepage and clarify our proposition by way of a new banner. We spent time testing appointment systems before settling on Appointlet as our software package. Then we worked on developing a 3-phase approach to our homepage message which has given us the ability to clearly communicate with customers at each milestone during the season.

From a fulfilment perspective, we had a combination of Royal Mail for smaller orders and hand-delivery which gave us the capacity to still provide a personal service with the bigger orders. Now that we are at the end of the season, I would say that the most important decision we made was getting a grip on the website and making it as easy as possible for parents to order. We’ve seen a 250% increase in e-commerce sales and future-proofed our business in a positive, long-term way.

A big success and lesson learned of lockdown for our retailers was the introduction of an online appointment system to websites. Check out and investigate various softwares and work out which is best for your website platform. Consider if you want to release all appointments at once or stagger them so you can be completely in control.

JAN RICHARDSON, TOTAL CLOTHING

Offering schools their own web shop platform is just one of the ways Total Clothing has scaled up its digital capability and made itself an indispensable partner to schools during the pandemic, as Jan Richardson explains;

We have been leading the way digitally for a number of years now and are about to launch further developments. Schools really like the fact that we can customise the platform to their needs (within reason). We can accommodate pupil premium vouchers, discounts for hardship cases and all manner of requests that schools want to add, that we can manage in house. Online sales increased this year and we worked hard to minimise the amount of returns and exchanges because of virtual sizing.

We created sizing videos, but the returns and exchanges were way above previous years in spite of this. Online sales increased 21%. Customers particularly liked the click and collect option. Going forward, there will certainly have been some converts to online, but the sizing issue for new starters is the biggest challenge and this needs to be managed in order for parents to confidently order online going forward. By next summer, I would expect that there will be more innovation in this area from retailers.

The increase in online shopping inevitably means there will be an increase in returns, with many shoppers adopting a ‘buy two, return one’ attitude. Make sure all products on your website have clear sizing information and take the time to build a section on your site with ‘Sizing Tips & Guides’. JULIA WORTHINGTON, ALLEYCATZ

Providing a seamless customer journey whether shopping online or in-store was key to Alleycatz approach, ensuring the personal service they are known for was maintained, as Julia Worthington explains;

Having started our business online, we felt that our website was ready to handle the additional demands presented by this very unique back to school period. Our physical store has been enhanced by technology in many ways - for example, the introduction of a large interactive touch-screen has given parents the opportunity to bring the website into their shop experience with quick search options on our ranges and the chance to view their specific school requirements. But there was still scope for us to tailor our customer journey further to ensure the connection between the digital and physical parts of our operation was seamless. We’ve used an in-store appointment system called Booking Bug for several years now, so one of the areas we focussed on was gathering additional details from parents during their first digital interaction. These included specifying their school, house group, year group, sizing, whether they would be a new starter.

Every detail enabled us to prep and tailor their in-store appointment so that it was manageable within the fitting restrictions yet still felt like the personal, premium service that we are known for. Within our system, parents are able to retain and view their sales history when they sign in which we enhanced further with personalised communications where we would issue extra school information if needed. I would say our sales split was 55% in-store versus 45% online which saw an increase of around 200%. Embracing digital has always been part of our strategy but what the pandemic has shown is that the integration is key to delivering a cohesive experience in what has been a period of dynamic change.

With the Plastic Packaging Tax coming in soon, we thought our Eco-Shirts and Blouses would be the perfect products to receive a packaging makeover. Here’s what our Sustainability Lead Samantha Leigh discovered when she delved deep into the seams to see what we could change;

We carried out our packaging audit, unpicking our products, weighing plastic content and identifying content elements that could be improved. Now we know what needs to be done, our aim is to reduce packaging where possible, only source packaging with a recycled content and to make sure as much of it as possible is recyclable.

FACT: Recycled polyester is almost the same as virgin polyester in terms of quality but its production requires 59% less energy which in turn reduces CO2 emissions by up to 32%.

SUSTAINABILITY AS WE KNOW IT...

Recognition of our commitment to sustainability came in the most prestigious form when David Luke was honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development.

We were one of 220 organisations nationally to be recognised with a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

Announced on Tuesday 21 April at the peak of the pandemic, David Luke joined just 19 businesses in the UK to have been given the royal seal of approval for excellence in Sustainable Development in this year’s awards roll-call.

Queen’s Awards for Enterprise recognise and encourage the outstanding achievements of UK businesses in the fields of Innovation, International Trade, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity.

The Queen’s Award panel noted “David Luke was awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development because it had demonstrated a long-term commitment to sustainable improvements specifically through the development of an eco-product (school uniforms), using recycled plastic to create the polyester content.”

CHOOSE DAVID LUKE WOOL

The wool we produce at David Luke is manufactured to the highest specification and will withstand the test of time.

With many prestigious and traditional schools requiring wool blazers for their schools, David Luke is the choice for this exceptional quality fabric.

It’s all in the blend

We use a blend of fine wool for softness and warmth together with slightly coarser wool to add shine and body to the finished fabric. Blending specific different fibre lengths creates a strong, full, even and round yarn to optimise a consistent dyeing process and final consistent finished presentation.

STEP FIVE STEP SEVEN

The wool is first carbonised to eliminate impurities, and then carefully washed.

STEP THREE

The spinning process follows precise mathematical rules to create yarn of a consistent diameter.

Using moisture, heat and pressure, the surface opens up, resulting in a controlled and even shrinkage creating a compact and wind-resistant structure.

STEP ONE STEP TWO STEP FOUR STEP SIX

The fibre blend is sent through the carding process. This eliminates the fibres that are too short and gently aligns the rest to ensure consistency.

The warping machine prepares the beam for the weaving. Then, the warp, together with the yarn, are woven.

The fabric then goes through a steam pressure treatment process at a temperature of around 120°C, which ensures the wool will not revert to its pre-finished state.

A colour matching procedure ensures consistent dye batches. The dye recipes have to be closely controlled and varied according to the behaviour of the wool between each lot.

Poly/wool

For a superior suiting look, the poly/ wool fabrics we use incorporate natural wool fibre with the durability of polyester to perform throughout the school year. (Also available with Elastane.)

Tweed

A quality to match the rigours and demands of schoolwear fabrics, whilst giving schools an individual identity with classic niche tailoring.

Wool/cotton stripes

Our Venetian stripes range remains popular with many schools wanting a truly distinctive look. The cotton adds strength and durability with bespoke designs giving a differentiated look for any school choosing this fabric.

Poly/viscose

This fabric offers an extremely durable, washable and easy care cloth. The hopsack weave provides a textured feel to the fabric as an enhancement to a standard polyester fabric. (Also available with Elastane.)

ADD ENHANCEMENTS

Tape, cord or piping can be added to further customise a blazer or jacket. Available in standard colour or special dye.

Taping is a great finishing touch, with lots of positioning options such as taped lapels, pockets and cuffs.

Pockets can have a variety of designs - patch, jetted, with flaps, slanted, mock to name just a few.

Choose from stock or bespoke buttons and how many to place on the garment. Most popular is a 2 or 3 button front.

Vents - whether you choose none, one or two, the back vents will often fall in line with the garment design selected but can also be specified.

The lining can be closely matched to the shade of the blazer or jacket or can be made into a design feature. Alternatively pick a bright contrast lining or a bespoke printed lining, specific to the school.

Technical Fabric Information

Flat seams and lightweight stretch compressed fabric gives the wearer added support, comfort and reassurance.

The fabric optimises the body temperature and keeps it warm. In normal temperature, it allows the body to breathe, reducing perspiration. And in the heat, the fabric draws moisture away from the skin speeding up the evaporation process and helping the wearer keep cool and dry. The mesh fabric is perfectly suited to performance sportswear with the knit of the fabric allowing breathability.
