And as we continue to lead the market in sustainability, don’t miss reading more about our move to circularity – another first in school wear. As we launch the FIRST EVER CIRCULAR SCHOOL BLAZER, we can feel the conversation is moving on. We are delighted that our market move into recycled polyester over 13 years ago, has resulted in polyester from recycled plastic bottles now being ubiquitous in school blazers. But we can’t stop there. What happens to garments when they reach the end of their first useful life is our responsibility, and we need to do things differently. Read all about our innovation on pages 4&5.

In that vein, we’re continuing to do things differently by investing in new garment enhancement capabilities through digital print, sewing and increased embroidery. We’ve got some great service additions to talk to you about that will amplify the options for our growing Juco range and give you a greater service at key times of the year.

Introducing the first fully recyclable school blazer in 2023

Over a decade on from introducing the school wear industry to recycled polyester, we are proud to announce another industry first as we partner with the Circular Textiles Foundation. David Luke will be the first school uniform brand to join the Circular Textiles Foundation’s revolution with the aim of making our products 100% recyclable to ensure they never need to go to landfill or incineration. Our first fully recyclable school blazer will be available to purchase from January 2023 marking a new era in sustainable innovation for our industry.

We have been quite obsessed with responsible production and consumption of clothing and exploring the next solution for end-of-life school uniform,” explains Kathryn Shuttleworth. “Our Re: Uniform campaign is still so much of what we are about – putting more into the construction of products so that they can be handed down and live a long life. But when the inevitable happens and garments cannot be rescued, it is greatly disappointing to discover there are very few welldeveloped solutions out there. We have worked with garment-recyclers, where there has been an historical approach to down-cycling and converting waste fabrics into blankets, flooring, or rags, but this still doesn’t feel like a useful way to introduce circularity. And so, through our connection to the garment recyclers connecting us to work with Reskinned, we were then signposted to the Circular Textile Foundation and a complete mindset shift in the way we need to look at closing the loop.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT MOVEMENT IN TEXTILES SINCE THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

The Circular Textiles Foundation is the first of its kind; the ground-breaking initiative provides an independent circularity standard for genuine accountability, transparency, and peace of mind. In making circularity accessible to all, the foundation turns the concept into a reality.

The key learning as we’ve been introducing circularity, is that it all begins with design. So much of the clothing we all wear and the uniform we make uses blended fibres, and the mechanical and chemical reprocessing technologies that exist, have really struggled to separate those fibres and make sure they can all be reused again.

Working with CTF, we have gone through a significant process to analyse every element of the products we have started with and certify the content within them. From fabric, buttons, thread, zips, interlining, shoulder pads – we have gone through all elements, resourcing where we need to. This process has been quicker than we feared but helped by the fact that our Eco blazers and jackets use mono-fibre polyester.”

FIBRE TO FIBRE TEXTILE

RECYCLING

The Circular Textiles Foundation certification mark will be carried on Eco-blazers and Jackets from January 2023 with a goal to encompass the entire eco-uniform range for future collections. This mark guarantees that the garment has been designed to be recycled by a specific facility, which processes it into new fabric at end of use. The fabric can then be used to make new clothing, eliminating waste, reducing the need for virgin materials, and reducing CO2 emissions. David Luke customers can actively join in with our circular journey by scanning the QR code found on the garment’s tag to find out how and where it can be recycled.

Our vision for the next decade is that we use recycled fibres made from clothing not plastic bottles. We want to make our school uniform completely circular: made from recycled materials which mean it is 100% recyclable and it never needs to go to landfill. With immediate effect we will be designing our Eco-blazers and Jackets with this specific goal in mind, aiming for every item to be returned to thread or fibre, ready for its next incarnation and available to buy from January 2023.

STEP ONE

The wool is first carbonised to eliminate impurities, and then carefully washed.

The wool we produce at David Luke is manufactured to the highest specification and will withstand the test of time.

STEP THREE

The spinning process follows precise mathematical rules to create yarn of a consistent diameter.

STEP FOUR STEP TWO

The fibre blend is sent through the carding process. This eliminates the fibres that are too short and gently aligns the rest to ensure consistency.

We use a blend of fine wool for softness and warmth together with slightly coarser wool to add shine and body to the finished fabric. Blending specific different fibre lengths creates a strong, full, even and round yarn to optimise a consistent dyeing process and final consistent finished presentation.

STEP FIVE

Using moisture, heat and pressure, the surface opens up, resulting in a controlled and even shrinkage creating a compact and wind-resistant structure.

STEP SEVEN

The fabric then goes through a steam pressure treatment process at a temperature of around 120°C, which ensures the wool will not revert to its pre-finished state.

STEP SIX FOUR

warping machine prepares beam for the weaving. Then, warp, together with the are woven.

A colour matching procedure ensures consistent dye batches. The dye recipes have to be closely controlled and varied according to the behaviour of the wool between each lot.

With many prestigious and traditional schools requiring wool blazers for their schools, David Luke is the choice for this exceptional quality fabric.

For a superior suiting look, the poly/wool fabrics we use incorporate natural wool fibre with the durability of polyester to perform throughout the school year. (Also available with Elastane.)

Tweed

A quality to match the rigours and demands of school wear fabrics, whilst giving schools an individual identity with classic niche tailoring.

Wool/cotton stripes

Our Venetian stripes range remains popular with many schools wanting a truly distinctive look. The cotton adds strength and durability with bespoke designs giving a differentiated look for any school choosing this fabric.

Poly/viscose

This fabric offers an extremely durable, washable and easy care cloth. The hopsack weave provides a textured feel to the fabric as an enhancement to a standard polyester fabric. (Also available with Elastane.)

Polyester

Offering extreme durability, polyester is hard wearing for the rigours of everyday wear. The superior polyester we use in our Independent blazers has a breathable weave to provide a soft handle and structured finish.

ADD ENHANCEMENTS

Tape, cord or piping can be added to further customise a blazer or jacket. Available in standard colour or special dye.

Taping is a great finishing touch, with lots of positioning options such as taped lapels, pockets and cuffs.

Pockets can have a variety of designs - patch, jetted, with flaps, slanted, mock to name just a few.

Choose from stock or bespoke buttons and how many to place on the garment. Most popular is a 2 or 3 button front.

Vents - whether you choose none, one or two, the back vents will often fall in line with the garment design selected but can also be specified.

The lining can be closely matched to the shade of the blazer or jacket or can be made into a design feature. Alternatively pick a bright contrast lining or a bespoke printed lining, specific to the school.

Embroidery is typically placed on the breast pocket but with more modern jacket styling, the lapel or pocket flap are also becoming popular.
