Spotlight on Education
Greetings from PaperSeed! 2017 was a great year for the foundation and, this year in particular, we sharpened our focus on strengthening education for girls and young women around the world. Increasing girls’ access to quality education is instrumental in breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty, and secondary schooling for girls has been called the best and most cost-effective investment against climate change. Yet, there are still 130 million girls out of school today. Worse still, this number does not include the girls who are in classrooms but still not learning due to unprofessional or absent teachers. We believe that education brings dignity, health, and the possibility to change global systems for the betterment of all. I encourage you to visit our website to learn about the many impactful projects that we support each year, and I welcome you to join us in creating a more just, healthy, and peaceful world. Through our Corporate Social Responsibility Services, we can make investing in education both streamlined and transparent for your business. We are continually grateful for CellMark’s generous support in underwriting the foundation’s operations and administrative expenses. This enables us to give one hundred percent of all donations directly to kids. And, this past year alone, we supported over 230,000 children and youth – our most impactful year to date. On behalf of all of us at PaperSeed, I thank you for your ongoing support and wish you a wonderful and prosperous new year!

Going to School, India Equipping Girls With 21st Century Skills Secondary schooling is the last hurdle for millions of children to acquire the skills they need to enter the formal economy in India. Unfortunately, many children are not learning the skills they need to start a business or get a job after graduating. Going to School is an organization that teaches youth entrepreneurial skills and empowers them to solve local problems through sustainable enterprises. Going to School has published storybooks using the Human Centered Design approach to teach these skills; each book tells a story that inspires students to become successful change makers. We have partnered with Going to School to support teacher trainings and print skill books, which will equip rural girls between the ages of 13 and 16 in the state of Jharkhand with the skills they need to live up to their full potential.
Shambala Foundation, China Skills Workshops for Young Women China has experienced rapid growth over the past few decades, lifting more than 800 million people out of poverty. However, for many young people in rural areas, economic opportunity is yet to arrive. In the mountainous Yunnan Province, opportunities are few and unemployment is high. PaperSeed is partnering with Shambala Foundation to provide young women in Yunnan Province with intensive training, designed to help them find direction and take action in their lives. With business training and rigorous action planning, these young people will have the means to find gainful employment, start businesses, or pursue higher education, thus bringing opportunity and growth to their communities.
Groundwork Bridgeport, USA Botanical Learning Garden Like many post-industrial cities, Bridgeport suffers from high unemployment and the many societal issues that can plague urban areas when industry departs. Eager young people may be looking for ways to improve their communities, but lack direction and support with which to do it. Fortunately, Groundwork Bridgeport gives local students the opportunity for both classroom and hands-on learning about botany, horticulture, and arboriculture. These engaging after-school activities provide youth with a safe after-school alternative and tangible life-skills, all while helping to beautify and revitalize the city. PaperSeed is proud to be working with Groundwork Bridgeport to create a learning garden and accessible natural space for the community

Thoughts from PaperSeed Day CellMark Employees Volunteer at Home PaperSeed Local Committees exist in CellMark offices around the world. Every spring, these committees take the lead on organizing meaningful activities to bring together children, young people, and employees with a goal of strengthening education in their local communities. PaperSeed Day 2017 had 80 volunteers in 5 countries and 7 CellMark offices. “I feel PaperSeed is a very important initiative our company supports, and I enjoy helping any way I can.” -PaperSeed Day Volunteer, USA “Spending an afternoon volunteering with refugees made a big impact on me personally. After a week of thinking about their situation, I decided to do more than just spend an afternoon. I am now a sort of guardian for a 20-year-old guy from Eritrea. He and I spend time together, and he contacts me whenever he needs information or help with anything. I thought that if I had fled to a strange country, without any family or friends, having a contact person would probably make life easier.” -PaperSeed Day Volunteer, Sweden “Taking time out of our busy lives to help others that are less fortunate is a good way to show that we, CellMark, care about the communities where we are present and are living our guiding principles.” -PaperSeed Day Volunteer, USA
