Environmental Science Reflection

Over the course of the semester, I feel that, in my Introduction to Environmental Science (EVR2001) class, I have learned an extensive amount about current, past, and possibly future environmental issues that our planet is enduring. Many of the issues impacting our environment have caught my attention and opened my eyes to the effects these issues are causing. Environmental science has had an impact on me personally, and has changed my understanding and the intensity of my opinions on many environmental issues in a variety of ways. There are even particular environmental issues that I find relevant to my own life for many reasons. This class taught me how I can reduce my own impact on the environment, which has even led me to change some aspects of my life to reduce my environmental impact as a result. EVR2001 has impacted me personally, in many different ways First, this class has brought so many issues to my attention, and taught me that almost anything can have a negative impact on our environment. For example, I found it intriguing that even letting a pet cat, or feral cats in general, outside, is a severe negative threat to the biodiversity of an ecosystem (Lecture 4 Slides). Personally, I do not believe many people know the effect cats can have, which leads them to believe their cat is fine roaming around outside. The Global Article Analysis assignments had another impact on me. They allowed me to realize that countries can be affected differently by the same

The environment plays a significant role in life. It is an essential part of our life. A clean environment is very necessary to live a peaceful and healthy life. An environment is the natural surroundings which help life to grow and nourish on this earth. It helps human beings, animals and other living things to grow and develop naturally. But now days,our everyday actions and decisions are negatively impacting the environment, causing pollution, deforestation, overfishing.We are disturbing our environment in many ways which affecting not only the environment but all living beings. All across the world, people are facing challenging environmental problems every day. Global warming is the biggest problem that our planet is facing right now. It is one of the most current and widely discussed problem. In short, global warming represents a fundamental threat to all living things on earth.Climate changes like global warming is the result of human practices like emission of greenhouse gases. Global warming leads to rising temperatures of the oceans and the earth surface causing melting of polar ice caps, rise in sea levels and also lead to natural disaster such as flash floods and desertification. A decade ago, global warming was not much of a concern as it is now. No matter how much we are informed about it , we as a society seem to ignore the future disasters that global warming will acquire. Global warming is a "global" dilemma and everyone has an obligation to help reduce emissions. Human influence has always been a very serious issue to Global warming.We as human are not taking care of the earth. Human influence to this global warming is more than the natural causes .The earth has been changing for many years until now it is still changing because of modern lifestyle of human. Human activities include industrial production, gas emission,burning fossil fuel and deforestation. Gas emissions from factories and exhaust fumes from Get more content

Importance Of Environment Essay

Ethics is the study of what is right and wrong in human conduct. Environmental ethics studies the effects of human's moral relationships on the environment and everything within it (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2008). The ethical principles that govern those relations determine human duties, obligations, and responsibilities with regard to the Earth's natural environment and all of the animals and plants that inhabit it (Taylor, 1989). The purpose of this paper is to reveal environmental issues that are threatening the existence of life on Earth, and discus our social obligations to refrain from further damaging our environment, health and life for future generations. These perspectives are anthropocentric or human centered and view all non–human life as less important than humans themselves. Environmental ethics challenges these beliefs by questioning the assumed moral superiority of human beings to members of other species on earth (SEP, 2008). Preservation of the environment is essential to the preservation of the human race. Global Warmingis the number one concern threatening the very existence of humans and everything within the environment today. The human race is to blame for the destruction of the natural world. The environmental issues that are threatening all human and non–human life today, started in the industrial revolution and the discovery of oil The need to improve the quality of life resulted in the construction of factories to mass produce products for consumers. These factories were powered by fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. The combustion of these fossil fuels emitted great quantities of pollutants that remain in the Earths atmosphere to this day and is the number one cause of global warming. However, in ethics one cannot evaluate just one thing. In ethics, as in nature, everything is connected to everything else (Partridge, 1998). Environmental Fundamentals

Introduction

Environmental science is defined as the study of the environment and the interconnecting systems it contains, furthermore, the way people interact with their natural surroundings and use natural resources (wise geek, 2013). Scientist in this field is highly interdisciplinary and extremely diverse, for example, a scientist might study volcanoes or climate change. This essay will cover the following; the definition of environmental science, the relationship between science and technology and how it affects environmental problems; the concept of environmental sustainability and why it should be studied; how human...show more content...

Environmental Sustainability

Environmental sustainability is the process of making sure current processes of interaction with the environment are pursued with the idea of keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible based on ideal–seeking behavior (Wikipedia, 2010). What makes environmental sustainability so important is that it demands that society designs activities to meet human needs while indefinitely preserving the life support systems of the planet (Wikipedia, 2010). Human consumption can only use the nature's resources at a rate that can be replenished naturally.

Human Values affecting Society

The most devastating environmental change of all is the loss of biodiversity. The rate of species extinction has remained at one species per million per year, furthermore, the accelerating destruction of habitats throughout the world leads to projections of the loss of two–thirds of all species on earth by the end of this century, and millions of years to recover from the Cretaceous period (mindfully.org, 2013). As individuals, we obtain our

food, directly or indirectly from plants, for example, plant our primary use of medicines. Biodiversity also determines the properties of communities and ecosystems, which capture energy from the sun. The world is less resilient, more homogeneous, less interesting, and with fewer opportunities for our descendants and ourselves: where the process reaches

CHAPTER 3: THE MICRO ENVIRONMENT

MGMT 488 – STRATEGY AND POLICY

OVERVIEW

The micro environmental analysis is the second step in creating the Environmental Analysis. The micro environment examines the general business climate as it relates to the organization within its industry. The microenvironment is also known as Porter's Five Forces of Competition. The macro environment is primarily concerned with major issues and upcoming changes in the environment. The analysis looks at five areas of interest, which are

1) Power of the Buyers;

2) Power of the Suppliers;

3) Threat of Substitute Products;

4) Threat of New Entrants; and

5) Intensity of Rivalry. Notice in the following diagram, how these interact and influence each other.

RANKING THE FORCES

Each of the five forces is ranked on a high to low scale, sometimes part of the force is high, but other parts are low. A pet store has many suppliers of dog toys. Most people do not have a brand preference – as long as the dog likes the toy, it is acceptable. Thus, the supplier power of dog toys is low. However, the pet store also sellspurebred dogs. The most wanted breeds are Labradors and Beagles. There are a small number of breeders in the area. Thus, the supplier power of dogs is high.

Personal Statement For Environmental Engineering

Preserving the environment is one of the most critical issues we are facing today. How we act now will determine the fate of future generations. What really inspired me to consider environmental engineering as a profession was my Advanced Placement Environmental Science class in high school – it opened my eyes to global issues such as overpopulation, loss of biodiversity, inefficient energy sources, irresponsible waste disposal, etc. – and it motivated me to want to do something about it. What I want to ultimately accomplish in this field of work is facilitate the growth of the use of renewable energy sources, support responsible population reduction initiatives, and develop agricultural practices that ensure food and water security for every single person on the planet. The nature of the work varies depend on what one wants to specialize in. Many engineers work in office settings (with a great deal of operational record keeping, paperwork, and technical reports), but it often requires hands–on work and on–site oversight, especially when working in construction, ecosystem remediation, natural resource cultivation, or waste management. Oftentimes, engineers work over 40 hours a week in order to meet deadlines and finish all their tasks. On average, daily face–to–face, email, and telephone communication, and group collaboration with contractors, staff, and clients are necessary for careers offered to environmental engineers. At the same time, independent work is emphasized.

The environment has become a topic of great discussion for the 21st century, with the growing awareness of the public on the condition of our environment and the resources that we have available to us. One question that scientists have been debating is the likelihood of sustainable development, which is the process of advancing technology, increasing revenue, and improving the standards of living without causing environmental degradation or depleting the resources of the earth. The proponents of the argument believe that sustainable development is not only "possible and desirable," but is a requirement due to the growing global population. On the other hand some environmentalists maintain the opinion that "there is no such thing as sustainable development," because they believe that the environment is consistently damaged in the face of civilization (Bailey). The discussion follows the economic interests of those involved, the correlation between energy consumption and the population growth in environmental degradation, and the views of leaders as well as the public. The question has come into light due to the growing concern regarding our climate. In the last two centuries, human activity has considerably increased the concentration of Greenhouse Gas emissions in the earth's atmosphere. In comparison to the last 10,000 or so years, the amount of carbon dioxide that has been produced remained in a conveniently low level of 260 and 290 parts per million (ppm), yet at

There are various controversial topics that influence our lives every day. Environmental issues as a whole have been pushed down and are rarely publicized. The issue of deforestation is a huge environmental problem that I do not often hear about on the news or in my day to day life. Most of what I know about the topic is from reading science textbooks. I understand what deforestation means, and I understand that it largely affects the world today, and more specifically affectsclimate change, however I have never heard current news on this subject. Deforestation is the clearing away of a large area of trees. I know that deforestation plays a role in the decrease of biodiversity and affects the climate and environment of the earth as a whole. Three sources that could lead to more information about this topic include social media sites, a news outlet, and a scientific article. Social media cites, such as Facebook, can influence our understanding of deforestation. As we are scrolling through our Facebook pages, the posts that we see and read affect our understanding of a subject. I had to look up posts about deforestation on Facebook because no one I know posts about this topic, and hardly anyone seems to care about this subject in America. There were a few posts from the Facebook pages of news sources, like CNN, and a few environmental groups such as the Environmental Defense Fund with posts, but not many everyday people. One person had a post about how carbon dioxide is

What Is My Environmental Worldview

In our modern age, humanity has risen to a point where our actions have severe consequences on many aspects of the world around us. On the forefront of today's world problems is the major issue of environmental awareness as it affects other species, our ecology and the future of mankind.. Furthermore, the issue of biocentrism should be addressed in order to explain why consideration of all living beings should be vital when regulating decisions involving the environment. The overall impression given off by the novel is that we are not so powerful and intelligent as to wantonly pollute our environment without accepting the consequences down the line. The facts, data and passages from books we have gone over have taught me a lot about how I can help change the world and the fundamental needs a human has to have to survive. "Man is not alone on this planet. He is part of a community, upon which he depends absolutely" (Ishmael 57). The whole world is a community, without one, the other cannot survive. It was made this way for everything to work together, in a cycle. By ruining one, the other goes too. In my everyday life my environmental actions are consisted with my worldview, simple things such as recycling, going vegetarian/vegan, not hunting animals, that I do, have a tremendous effect on the environment. The importance of environmental awareness is evident through my biocentric point of view, how an environmentally conscious person should act and how mental traps such as, pessimism and paralysis/analysis should be avoided in order to further our efforts for maintaining our world. Above all, there are a lot of articles and books that discover the negative impacts of humans' activity on environment. Undoubtedly, healthy food is a very important thing for our future, especially in conditions of great pollution of the natural environment. The genetic engineering and biotechnologies are perspective directions of scientific activity. However, such methods of interference in the nature have made our food more dangerous for our health. Now ecologically neutral production has become more popular in many countries. Public transport is one of the main elements of social infrastructure that ensures the transport needs of residents in urban, suburban and intercity environments. Reliable and efficient public transportation for the city is an important indicator of socio–political and economic stability. Automobile movement leads to excessive noise and air pollution. However, the main aim of the current paper is examination of two positive impacts of humans' activity on environment. First of all, one of the most important impacts of humans' activity on environment is introduction of plants from one part of the world to another. As it is known, the process of globalization is an important feature of the modern world. Globalization means that the country's borders wear away on the way of movement knowledge, technologies,

Ian Somerhalder once said, "The environment is in us, not outside of us. The trees are our lungs; the rivers, our bloodstream. We are all interconnected, and what you do to the environment, ultimately you do to yourself (SC 2)." I have noticed in my everyday life how unaware my friends and family are when it involves the environment. I often hear, "Just throw it away" or "Throw it in the ditch" when I am out in public. Disappointed and sad, I became an advocate for the environment (BE 1). If I was able to change the world by myself, I would change the pollution issues of land, water, and air. The land pollution has become a growing issue for years with landfills being the leading factor. In 2006, Americans generated 251 million tons of trash with at least three locations to go: fifty–five percent to landfills, thirty–three percent to recycling, and twelve and a half percent to incinerators (SC 7) (Kulpinski). Daily, one person would generate 4.6 pounds of garbage (BE 3). Many Americans do not think of the build–up from trash when they take out the garbage once a week. When a landfill site develops, there is an impact on biodiversity. About thirty to three hundred species are lost according to the Romanian Ministry of Environment and Forests when landfills are introduced to a new environment. Along with biodiversity, soil and groundwater are affected. Soil fertility decreases because of the mixture of toxic substance and decaying organic material. Groundwater can contain high levels of toxic metals, ammonia, toxic organic compounds, pathogens (SC 4) (Newton). Along with land pollution, the human race pollutes water and air. According to Jacques Cousteau, water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends, have become one thing – a global garbage can (SC 8). Since I was young, I have had a special place in my heart for bodies of water, especially the ocean, because of countless family vacations (BE 2). It is estimated that almost 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year (Sifferlin). This has caused for animals such as turtles and dolphins, fish and sharks, crabs and seabirds to be the victims of plastic debris (SC 6) (Cause and Effects). To put the issue into scale, it Get

The pollution has both chronic and acute effects on our health, and affects many of our systems and organs. The health consequences of lower levels of pollution have been more difficult to decide. The first cause is that people differ in response to the environment and the toxics. When we are exposed to the different conditions caused by the environment, the variation is wide because of how we react. With this variability of the population, it can mask the effects that do occur in a sensitive segment of the population. The second difficulty is our age, and the timing of the exposures and how it will influence both sensitivity to the environmental agent, and the type of effect it will cause our health. Infants and children may acquire lifelong damage compared to us adults. Environmental regulation and pollution control will remain an important cornerstone of the public health policy. The focus will be prevention, instead of disease treatment. Control of the pollution is a highly cost–effective means ensuring public health. With the contaminated environments and the work hazards in occupations, improving the pollution control may lead to a reduced health care disparities. When the health of all citizens is protected that a nation can fulfill its potential. Another reason we could consider is the climate change. The climate poses a challenge to our health. Threats to our health caused by a toxin or disease pathogen, there are ways the

Much of our waste is made up of glass, metal, plastic and paper. Our natural resources such as trees, oil, coal and aluminum are used up in enormous amounts to make these products and the resources will one day be completely used up. So in order to cut down on the energy used lets reuse.

What can you do?

* Sort out your trash. Organic matter (e.g. potato peelings, left over food, tea leaves etc.) can be put in to a compost heap in the garden and used as a good, natural fertilizer for the plants.

*Aluminum cans, glass bottles and newspapers are often collected from our doorsteps, but other items such as plastic bottles, juice cartons and cardboard may not be, in which case they can be taken to nearby recycling banks. You can find out where they are by just searching on line. * Use recycled paper to help save trees. Chlorine bleach is usually used to make newspapers and this pollutes rivers. It's better to use unbleached, recycled paper whenever you can. * Take your old clothes to charity shops. Some are sold, others are returned to textile mills for recycling. * Try to avoid buying plastic. It's hard to recycle. One way to cut down on plastic is to refuse to use plastic bags offered by supermarkets and use cloth re–useable shopping bags instead, or re–use plastic bags over and over again, until they wear out and then recycle them.

Taking a holistic approach to saving the earth, many of today's modern day conservationists focus on everything from pollution and energy usage to ecological health and peaceful coexistence with the animal kingdom. In other words, the same ideals are being shared by what is commonly deemed the ecology movement, green movement, peace movement and environmental movement. It's no coincidence that one of the most famous groups working in the name of these ideals calls themselves Green Peace. Water conservation can be defined as (a) any beneficial reduction in water loss, use or waste as well as the preservation of water quality, (b) a reduction in water use accomplished by implementation of water conservation or water efficiency measures or, (c) improved water management practices that reduce or enhance the beneficial use of water. A water conservation measure is an action, behavioural change, device, technology, or improved design or process implemented to reduce water loss, waste, or use. Water efficiency is a tool of water conservation. That results in more efficient water use and thus reduces water demand. The value and cost–effectiveness of a water efficiency measure must be evaluated in relation to its effects on the use and cost of other natural resources (e.g. Energy or chemicals). Water can be conserved in a lot of ways and most of us are aware of those means. It is our duty to actually implement those in our daily life. Get

With the increasingly growing concern of climate change and its impact on the environment, it is reasonable to ask how the environment will affect Earth 's living organisms, from the small to the big (Freitas et al., 2015). Fish are poikilothermic organisms, meaning their body temperature is susceptible to and easily influenced by external environmental changes. The metabolic rate, defined as the total chemical activity in an organism, also changes with body temperature (Pfluegl 2014). These factors make fish a simple subject to conduct experiments with in regards to the effects in one area of climate change: the rise of sea temperature (Freitas et al., 2015). The increase of temperature may affect fish behavior, as well as diet, migration, and other demands that require energy (Johnston et al., 1987). The effects could ultimately permeate into the ecosystem 's function and by consequence, humanity (Walberg 2011). This small scale experiment sought to observe the effect of warm temperature on the metabolic activity of goldfish via the measurement of the concentration of oxygen the fish consumed. The experiment tested the null hypothesis that increasing the water temperature of a goldfish 's environment does not have a significant effect on the metabolism rate of the goldfish. Not disposing of a broken cell phone the right way has many negative effects. It can create many environmental problems. Electronic trash is becoming more and more a bigger threat every day. A phone is filled with so many toxins just like any other electronic device. When it makes its way to a landfill the materials that these electronic devices are made out of can potentially leak. With that in mind. It can cause a whole bunch of problems for the ecosystem, plant life, animals, and even the food supplies. Which will end up causing way more problems than the everyday person needs?

Electronics are not the only type of waste that causes a major problem. There is a liquid waste, solid waste, hazardous waste, organic waste and recyclable waste. Not all waste is harmful, but it depends on if they can be or are disposed of correctly. Liquid waste can be classified from water wash to liquid cleaning products. Solid wastes can be just normal rubbish such as newspapers, old tires, food waste and even broken furniture. Hazardous is waste that can be threatening to the public and or the environment. Hazardous waste can range from reactive, toxic, inflammable, and corrosive. Some examples of these are equipment that contains mercury, batteries, pesticides, and lamps. Some waste can be disposed of by incineration or having a designated piece of land such as landfill to dispose of the waste (Common types of waste with examples). Today in our world we don't seem to care about what happens to our planet. We are just continuing to pollute, destroy ecosystems, and deplete our natural resources, and so much more to harm our environment. But what is anyone doing to stop this to save our environment? All of his conflict and problems we are bringing onto our selves, which will only continue to get worse and worse if we don't take action now. It is important to know that humans must have a relationship with our planet in order to not destroy it, also known as environmental responsibility. What exactly is environmental responsibility? There really isn't an exact definition since there are many ways people look at the situation. But one of the interpretations of the definition is that environmental responsibly is the "obligation of decision makers to take actions which protect and improve the environment as a whole, along with their own interests," according to the University of Pretorie. But my personal view of the subject at hand is, it's one responsibly or duty to take care, help improve and rebuild any past and future damages we have or will on our environment. Fixing our past actions will help us repair our damaged environment, and prepare us for any future conflict. . But why is it important to have environmental responsibility? It's important since all of the resources we are using and the way we are using them today, are either constructing or razing the world of tomorrow. So, we have to construct sustainability in order to secure we have enough resources, and make sure we don't run out of them in the future. First let me start with the basics. I know you have heard of how we are polluting our environment. It has existed in the air, water, and soil for thousands of years, and all thispollution in our environment can cause many problems such as diseases such as cancer. We need to take drastic measures to stop all of this pollution in our environment. We can start using clean energy in our everyday lives. Instead of using gas to power our cars, in the future we may switch to electric cars. Since cars are one of the main contributors to the air pollution in our environment. We can reduce the amount of runoff in our water systems by

Smog, contaminated water, melting of snow packs. These are some of impacts that Climate Change has had on the Earth over the past years. All of these are product of the increase in carbon dioxide emissions by humans and their polluting activities. Since the Industrial Revolution, these events have escalated and, they have been becoming more noticeable and prolonged across the globe. Some of these events are more palpable and pronounced in certain parts of the hemisphere. For example, it is more common for a developing city to experience inferior conditions of air quality than a rural town. Since the effects of Climate Change are perceived differently around the world, its concrete consequences on the environment and on the living organisms around us are a challenge to identify and understand. However, since the interest on Climate Change and its effects on the environment has increased, more research and founding has been put in place in order to expand the knowledge and information on this topic. This increase in interest has led scientists to find other consequences that this phenomenon is beginning to cause. A number of these are more serious than others, but in conjunction these are dangerous to the ecosystems around us. One of these consequences of Climate Change is the acidification of the oceans. This event, which has been becoming more and more apparent in the last decades, is one of the many as of yet unknown impacts of Climate Change on earth.

Persuasive Essay On Environmental Sustainability

The current global population of 7.6 billion people is expected to reach 11.2 billion in 2100 (UN DESA), and as the Earth's population continues to grow exponentially, the topic of environmental sustainability is being debated with increased urgency. In the past few years, many large–scale environmental issues have emerged due to human activities: climate change, air and water pollution, rising sea levels, habitat loss, species extinction, and worsening natural disasters are all becoming more and more prevalent. But perhaps our most immediate concern should be whether or not we will be able to continue feeding this ever–increasing population. While all of us relatively understand how driving cars, leaving the lights on, or using too much water can affect the environment, there is one massive human activity that is frequently overlooked–eating. From growing, to processing, to distributing, and finally consuming, our agricultural system uses an immense portion of our planet's limited resources and emits large amounts of greenhouse gases that have drastic effects on the environment. Because of this, it is imperative to understand the environmental impacts of the type of foods that we choose to include in our diets. While much of today's population is heavily reliant on animal products, it is evident that a meat–based diet is not environmentally sustainable; on the other hand, a plant–based diet is much more environmentally friendly in terms of the amount of grain, water, and
