GROW Warren Day supports mental health messages “RFDS also provided a free barbecue, primary health, mental health and alcohol and other drugs information and education,” Mr March revealed.
By DAVID DIXON Working to promote community resilience, connection, and wellbeing in country kids, the GROW Warren Day is getting bigger and brighter every year! This free school holiday event – part of the Royal Flying Doctor Service’s Guiding Rural Outback Wellbeing (GROW) program – was held indoors on Tuesday, July 15, at the Warren Sporting and Cultural Complex. The wet, cold weather, however, did not deter the highlight of the day, stunning stunt bike riding displays from Australian Motocross legend and three-times World Freestyle Motocross Champion, Brodie Carmichael and his Aussie FMX team. Other attractions included performances from Warraan Widji Arts, a free barbecue, various indoor games, and dozens of stalls promoting healthy lifestyles and support groups, RFDS mental health, alcohol and other drugs program manager, Matthew March, explained. “Previous years have seen the RFDS-facilitated GROW Warren Day outgrow our street venue in partnership with the Warren Youth
Hundreds of locals, he added, turned out to see not only the Aussie FMX riders with their high-flying stunts, but also listen to their life stories and messaging about positive lifestyle choices and the importance of mental health and wellbeing. “Attendees were also treated to performances from Warraan Widji Arts throughout the day showcasing local cultural song and dance, popular music and sheer talent, led by Pete Mackay,” Mr March said. to host an even bigger range of activities for kids and families,” he added. The RFDS team had also been able to secure funding to bring Carmichael and his Aussie FMX team to Warren for spectacular performances during the day. “Although the cold and
sometimes wet weather was more suited to a day at home, our contingency plan still saw 25 support services set up indoors in the basketball stadium while, Creative Community Concepts ran free sports and games for the kids ranging from laser tag to “footy for fun”.
“GROW Community Days (health and wellbeing services expos) break down barriers to accessing critical resources, knowledge, and support in rural and remote communities, bringing together vital health and wellbeing services to share information and referral pathways in a family fun day environment,” he concluded.
