Narromine High wins major education award

By NARROMINE HIGH SCHOOL Narromine High School was awarded a prestigious award on Monday, August 4, at the Public Education Awards at the Town Hall, Sydney.

Our school won a Secretary’s award for Outstanding School Achievement in recognition of its Wellbeing Hub. Staff Lucy Burns, Rebecca Kennedy and Erin Burns accepted the award on behalf of the school.

The Hub is an incredible resource for the school and wider community which supports the whole student and provides specialist services and supports. It promotes health, supporting student health care needs, and reducing health risks are important to everyone at our school.

The Narromine High School Wellbeing Hub takes a multidisciplinary approach to student wellbeing and considers the whole child.

The Hub is underpinned by three core values: education, health and social.

TTT celebrates legends of transport and ag sectors

By SHARON BONTHUYS It’s just over two weeks until the highly-anticipated Inland Truck Centre and Inland Petroleum Trangie Truck and Tractor Show, or TTT as it’s more commonly known, makes a welcome return to the region.

Sponsored by two of the biggest names in the NSW transport industry - and local regional businesses to boot - the biennial event celebrating big wheels, transport, and their important connection to agriculture is back again this month, bigger and better than ever.

Organised by a committee of hard-working volunteers, the event on Saturday, August 23, brings together trucking and tractor enthusiasts from all over to the town of Trangie, swelling the town’s population significantly for the weekend, and bringing substantial economic benefits to the community. The Saturday program includes a jam-packed schedule featuring high-action events like the tractor pull, derby race, car barrel race, and quick shear, as well as a range of things on show including trucks, tractors, cars and bikes, as well as a variety of market and exhibitor stalls.

The family-friendly event also includes a range of activities for the kidlets, including the always-popular mechanical bull, climbing rock wall, and face painting.

“There is plenty for the whole family with kids’ amusement rides, lolly hunts and much more,” organisers said.

Show ‘n shine enthusiasts will enjoy seeing more than 300 vehicles on display at TTT, which will also feature two new categories for local trucks this year, including ‘best local working truck” and “best local unrestored truck (any condition)”.

surrounding communities. It comes under the heading of the 12 apostles being sent-out. Jesus says to them: “ freely you have received, now freely you shall give” . They were to proclaim the nearness of the Kingdom of Heaven; calling on God’s grace, as the opportunity arose, to heal the sick, the dying, or the demon-possessed.

Another time in the First Book of Peter, Chapter 4, Verses 7-10, Peter was addressing how poorly-treated Christians could be “faithful stewards of God’s grace”; how may they best respond to the amazing gifts God had given them, even if the threat of persecution was to continue. Peter puts it this way, saying, they were to offer hospitality without grumbling , loving each other deeply, in service to others.

Peter urged Christians to share with others the gifts they have. If it is words , then share God’s words, or if it is by deeds, let it be God’s help. So that God’s presence will be in everything and He’ll get the credit. The world they lived-in back then, has not changed from this situation; it is still described today as a “broken world”. And so we, the church,

exist now to also give generously.

We can give from the gifts given to us, whether it be giving of our time or fi nance. Giving can be in the form of hospitality or other acts of kindness.

The message that’s still relevant to us today, is for us to review our contributions in every way. By God’s grace, we have received so much, He has greatly loved the people of this world. Like those who listened in the day when Jesus and Peter spoke, we can be reminded that we have an opportunity to share how we have been blessed, with others in need.

In finishing, let’s look at two of Jesus’ parables from the book of Matthew; the Wedding Feast from Chapter 22 and, in Chapter 25, the Wise and Foolish Virgins. These parables relate to the motivation for us to heed the call to give. Their message has an added emphasis on being “faithful stewards of God’s grace”.

There’s a promise from Jesus of remaining in God’s favour, as we listen to his call and act accordingly - being faithful. It’s an extraordinary promise of eternal life should we complete the course of our life, obeying him to the end.

Lifeguards needed

The announcement that a local business would be taking over the management and operation of the muchloved and popular aquatic centres has been well received by the communities of Trangie and Narromine.

Operations manager Rowan James told Narromine Star THRIV3 is looking to engage junior and senior lifeguards for both aquatic centres.

“We are looking for several positions,” Rowan explained.

THRIV3 encourages anyone interested to get in touch with them. Having little or no experience is not an issue, he said, as full training and support will be provided.

NSW government program closure strips support from state’s small businesses The NSW government will close a vital program for small businesses across the regions late next month after cutting funding for the highly successful Business Connect program in its recent budget.

The program, which provides up to eight hours of free advice in areas such as strategic guidance, digital marketing, fi nancial planning and business resilience, has helped almost 6000 regional businesses since October 2023, offering more than 25,000 hours of support.

Support providers - many of whom are also running small businesses - are located across the state and will find themselves without ongoing work generated from the Business Connect program once it closes on September 30.

As government contractors, none are at liberty to speak to the media about the impending closure of the Business Connect program, but it is known that many will be impacted.

In a statement, NSW Nationals leader Dugald Saunders has said NSW has “seen three budgets and three cruel strikes against the bush”.

“Our businesses are the backbone of our country communities, they support local, employ locals, and keep our cities and towns running,” Mr Saunders said.

“We’re talking about shops and services run by mums and dads, family operators, and young entrepreneurs, but instead of helping them succeed, Labor has abandoned them to prioritise its own balance sheet.”

The decision comes as businesses across the mid-north coast and Hunter regions are still struggling to get back on their feet after the devastating May floods.

“People are literally on their knees right now, they are going through their toughest time ever, and to add insult to injury, the Minns government is taking away even more support by axing this program which has helped so many.”

“The premier and the treasurer need to do the right thing and give our regional businesses a fighting chance by urgently reversing this decision.”

Reversing population decline, “disastrous decision-making” Rawdon’s remarkable story told in WPCC exhibition

By LOCAL NEWSDESK The Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) will feature a new exhibition about the remarkable story of Rawdon Middleton VC, a resident of the region who was posthumously promoted to Pilot OƯicer and awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery and dedication during World War II. Rawdon Middleton was a promising young man with a bright future when World War II erupted in 1939. Like many of his peers, he answered the call to serve, embarking on a journey that would test his courage and character.

His story is one of extraordinary dedication and sacrifice; an inspiring tale of a local boy who against the odds became a hero.

“The exhibition explores Middleton’s early life and education in the region, his initial training at Narromine and the beginnings of his fl ight career,” Dubbo Regional Council Manager Arts and Culture Jessica Moore said.

“The heart of the exhibition is focused on his fi nal mission – the courageous actions that led to his death and his posthumous awarding of the Victo-

ria Cross.”

The exhibition is designed as a compelling and respectful narrative that serves as a powerful tribute to the selfsacrifice and heroism.

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. As time passes and the events of the war fade into history, it is the stories of those who served that remain powerful.

“Marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the exhibition will serve as a reminder not only of Rawdon Middleton’s legacy but also of the countless others who served, their resilience and bravery,” Ms Moore explained “It is important to shine a light on the extraordinary lives of ordinary people like Rawdon Middleton, people from our region who have remarkable stories to share,” she added.

“I would encourage our regional community to come and see this exhibition and use it as an opportunity to reflect, learn and acknowledge the sacrifices made during World War II,” Ms Moore said.

The Rawdon Middleton exhibition is free and can be viewed in the museum area of the WPCC until the end of the year.

“Disastrous decision-making” by remote politicians in Canberra, poor environmental policies impacting farmers, youth suicide and mental health issues, and the “tyranny of distance” were other issues Mr Chaffey spoke about in the traditional parliamentary introduction for new members.

He also touched on his personal struggles, family domestic violence, and the stepfather who remains an inspiration to him to this day.

However, it is the special challenges faced by people in the bush that was the major focus of his address.

“Many of the communities in the Parkes electorate have been faced with the challenge of population decline over the past decade,” Mr Chaffey said.

“Growing the population throughout the electorate, will be my biggest challenge during the time that I serve,” he added.

Offering as an example of how policy changes in Canberra impact the lives of people in the bush, he spoke about a “young couple” who had just bought a house in a country town a number of years’ ago.

“The young couple were unaware that the government changes were about to gut the local timber industry.

“The local abattoir would soon be on its knees, as well as the local mining industry, causing a huge reduction in the town’s population.”

Government decisions, he claimed, had “squarely and severely impacted the economy of that town”.

“That town was Gunnedah, and that young couple was my wife, Judy, and I. “We have unforgettable lived experience of the personal hardship that follows disastrous decision-making by government,” he said.

Referring back to similar addresses by country-based predecessors, he said that much the same problems had preoccupied their time in the Parliament.

“In reading over past members’ first speeches, I’ve seen similar themes, starting with the Hon. John Anderson, who first entered parliament back in 1989.

“Concerns about the impact of poor environmental policies on our agricultural sector, the need for targeted immigration and the critical importance of transport across large geographical areas have been front of mind for this area’s federal representatives for many, many years, so too has the need for financial restructure that supports our people, attracts newcomers and gives them the desire and ability to stay within our regions.

“We are still talking about these same issues today… a devastating increase in suicide in regional communities, an increase in mental health issues in our youth, incidents of youth crime in both boys and girls, and an increase in family breakdown – all very strong indicators that, unless more is done in regional communities, we won’t turn the corner.”

With his Parkes electorate, he said, bigger than Great Britain, Germany, or Japan, he intends representing all electors “whether they live in the silver city of Broken Hill, under the searching eye of the skies of Coonabarabran, or in amongst the black opals of Lightning Ridge.”

“I am here to serve them whether they are young families or people who have lived for decades in the remote part of NSW, and worked the land all their life.”

al, and spiritual rock, among the tempest of the mental health and gambling issues that impacted his mother for many years.

“It is hard to say here, in this very public place, but I need to do so to show just how important my stepfather was and is in our lives.

“As we changed and grew, there were good days and there were bad.

My stepfather continued to work on the land to provide for his family and live the truest example of what it means to serve with courage in everyday life,” he revealed.

Leaving home, marrying and starting his own family in a struggling bush town had showed him, he said, the impact that governments can make on our lives, both for good and bad.

“But every state and federal win is a fight. Our people just get on with the job, facing bigger health, education and business challenges than most people living in metropolitan areas.

“I was determined to do whatever I could to prevent other people from suffering the setbacks that we did at the hands of government who failed to realise the consequence of their decisions.”

This, he said, will be the driving force behind his time in Parliament.

“I want to make sure that the cities, the towns and the villages within the Parkes electorate are the places young Australians choose to put down their roots.

Decision-makers must understand the implications of their choices. We must do all we can to prevent shocks to our communities that have the power to destabilise families, and, in some cases, lead to heartache and destruction.”

He said the lack of focus on the Inland Rail project by the current government is an example of the city-centric focus of the current parliament.

“Construction on the northern corridor is now at snail’s pace, and I do not intend to drop the ball on this project,” Mr Chaffey said.

I will be applying as much pressure as possible to see trains moving goods to market through Parkes and Narromine, Gilgandra, Baradine, Narrabri, Moree, and North Star, and on to Queensland as quickly as possible.”

Depriving primary producers of water rights, honouring our dead, defence spending, the “enormous cost” of our rush to net zero through the rapid escalation of wind, solar and battery projects, supporting small business, and new infrastructure, were other areas he touched on.

“We need to see help for regional Australians in areas such as tax reform, greater economic incentives for people to choose regional towns, better infrastructure, and investment in our roads, local facilities and access to the basics such as quality education, childcare, aged care and healthcare,” Mr Chaffey said.

“These are the critical areas in which I want to see change for our Parkes communities. I want to see other people - other families - thrive on the sheer potential of our region,” he concluded.

Continental steak with pineapple

By NARROMINE CWA Steak lovers, have we got a a scrumptious recipe for you this week that will warm your belly and fi re up the tastebuds! Here’s our take on continental steak with pineapple.

What you need...

1.3kg chuck steak 1 large tin pineapple pieces and juice 3 onions, diced 1 green capsicum 2 dessert spoons soy sauce 1 cup beef stock (preferably using beef stock cubes)

3 tbsp tomato sauce 3 tbsp vinegar 3 tbsp cornflour 6 carrots, cut into strips 2 sticks of celery 1 tbsp sherry salt and pepper oil for frying.

What you do...

Roll the meat in cornflour and fry with oil in a frypan. Fry the onions then add stock, sauce, pineapple, vinegar, salt and pepper and cook for 90 minutes.

Add remaining ingredients and cook for a further 45 minutes.

Detectives are appealing for information following two break-ins in the Orana region last month.

In July 2025, detectives attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District established Strike Force Leonora to investigate rural-related crime in Dubbo, Narromine, and Warren areas.

About 12.30am on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, an Isuzu light rigid truck carrying power and concreting tools, was allegedly stolen from a construction site on Bunglegumbie Road, Dubbo.

Following inquiries, the truck was allegedly used in a break-and-enter at a business on McGrane Way, Narromine, about 3.35am, where power tools, cash, drinks, and a battery charger was stolen.

About 4.30am, the truck was allegedly used in an attempted break-in at another business on Craigie Lea Lane, Narromine, where it left after it was unable to enter.

Emergency services were later called to a truck on fi re in bushland on Budden’s Road, Dubbo, about 8.30am, the same day.

NSW Rural Fire Service attended and extinguished the blaze, however, the truck was destroyed.

As inquiries continue, anyone with information or has dashcam footage in these locations between 12.30am and 830am on Tuesday, July 1, is urged to contact Dubbo Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

In other news, following our recent report of a dumped vehicle being set alight near the Narwonah silo, emergency service crews returned to Narwonah over the weekend to extinguish dumped items that were set alight, including old lounge chairs, which in turn started a grassfi re. If anyone has further information about the ongoing dumping and fi res in this area near the stock reserve, please contact Crime Stoppers.

About Us Tomingley Gold Mine, owned and operated by West Australian based Alkane Resources Ltd, is situated near the village of Tomingley, 50 km south of Dubbo in Central New South Wales. Our mining operation includes both underground and open-cut mines, as well as a processing plant on-site that is responsible for producing gold bullion. The mine’s workforce consists of approximately 250 permanent employees who hold various roles in professional, technical, mining, processing, and trades.

One significant development for the Tomingley Gold Mine is the approval of both an extension to our underground mine and a new open-cut mine located 3 km to the south of the existing Tomingley deposits. This development approval and expansion will see a mine life beyond 2032.

St Augustine’s don PJs for charity and break records at athetics

By ST AUGUSTINE’S PARISH SCHOOL We’ve had some wonderful activities at St Augustine’s last week. One special event was our Pyjama Day, where staff and students wore their sleepwear to school on Tuesday, July 29, to raise funds for the St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. We raised $250.

On Thursday, July 31, we participated in our “cluster” athletics carnival in Dubbo. This carnival saw our students compete with students from the Catholic schools in Trangie, Peak Hill and Warren.

As a result of their great efforts, St Augustine’s have 29 students going on to compete in Parkes at the WilcanniaForbes Diocesan Athletics Carnival on Thursday, August 14. We also had two students break records on the day: Indi Brotherton in the senior girls 1500m race, and Jaggar Smith in the junior boys 1500m.

By NARROMINE HIGH SCHOOL The Oz Schools Instrumental Championships (OSIC) is a new event dedicated to celebrating and nurturing the musical talents of school-age students across Australia. Over 10 weeks, outstanding young musicians will come together to showcase their talents in piano, strings, drums and guitar.

Qualifying students are invited to compete in their respective state final, with top placing students from each state progressing to the OSIC National Championship.

OSIC is an opportunity to gain performance experience, expert feedback and recognition in music performance.

Narromine High year nine student, Spencer Craft, had a successful audition showcasing outstanding skill and passion, earning high praise from our judges and a place in the fi nal later this month.

An excited Spencer is now set to compete in the upcoming NSW Guitar State Final at the University of NSW on Sunday, August 24.

Narromine High School and Mrs Tonks are so proud of Spencer and wished him the best of luck in the state fi nal.

Top five is finally sorted!

By BRYSON LUFF Going into the final round of the 2025 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League competition, the composition and finishing order of the top five was still largely unknown with results from three different games having a bearing on who was in, who was out, and in what order the teams finished.

The Dunedoo Swans were one side who were in a threeway battle for position number five on the ladder and, having the bye, they had to hope that results would go their way.

One of those games did in fact fall in their favour, with the Cobar Roosters droppingout of the race when they were unable to sustain a great second-half comeback in their match against Narromine Jets played at Cobar.

The Jets had established a commanding 20-0 lead by halftime, but their prospects of securing victory looked somewhat shaky, after the home side came roaring back into the game, scoring 14 unanswered points to trail by just six at one stage.

It is history now that the Jets were able to go over for a converted try later in the match to extend their lead to 12 points and, whilst the Roosters replied with another try, the fi rst-half deficit was too much for them to reel-in and they lost with the fi nal result, 26-18; effectively ending their season.

Meanwhile, some 400km to the east, the Coonamble Bears were also locked-in a do-ordie battle with the Gulgong Bull Terriers at Gulgong,

with a win to the Bears their only option if they wanted to stay alive in the 2025 premiership race.

Indeed, they did just that, upsetting the home side by converting a 12-6 lead at halftime into an impressive 32-16 win on the road with their superior points differential securing them fi fth spot on the table ahead of Dunedoo.

They will now have to travel that same road again next Sunday for a return clash with the Bull Terriers in the elimination semi-fi nal.

The top-of-the-table battle between the Coolah Kangaroos and the Coonabarabran Unicorns witnessed the ‘Roos retaining their unbeaten status (and the Boronia Cup) when they outlasted a fast-fi nishing blue-and-gold outfit to come away with a 30-24 win, after leading 30-12 at one stage.

The loss by the Unicorns, combined with Narromine’s win over Cobar, means that the Jets leap-frogged them on the table and now those two teams will meet at Narromine next Saturday in the qualifying semi-fi nal.

Fifth position on the ladder in both Ladies League Tag and Reserve Grade were also decided by points differential with the Cobar Roosters fi nishing ahead of the Warren Bulldogs in League Tag and Coonabarabran doing likewise against Gulgong in Reserves

All four Narromine teams earn finals double chances

By DALLAS REEVES Four teams with semi-final double chances - with two sides of these sides playing at Cale Oval this weekend - was the dream scenario that has now become reality for the Narromine Jets.

The Jets had mapped out how First Grade could fi nish top-two, with that vision realised, when the Corey Cox captain-coached side defeated Cobar 26-18 at Cobar on Saturday, August 2, and Coonabarabran lost to Coolah 30-24 on the same day.

This means that Narromine now hosts the Castlereagh Rugby League qualifying semi-fi nals at Cale Oval on Saturday, August 9.

The Jets play Coonabarabran in fi rst grade, with the winner going on to play minor premiers, Coolah at Coolah in the second week of the fi nals.

Narromine’s Ladies League

Tag side will also be in action at home against secondplaced Dunedoo.

It was a perfect day at Tom Knight Oval for Narromine on August 2, with the Jets winning League Tag 20-0 and Reserve Grade 24-6.

Narromine’s Reserve Grade fi nished the regular season undefeated and now enjoys a week off.

Youth League has also progressed to the top four in Woodbridge Cup Youth League after a second straight win via forfeit, this time against Canowindra.

With a top eight finals system in Woodbridge Cup, youth league also has a double chance.

Narromine will play minor premiers Cowra in a qualifying semi-final at Manildra on Sunday, August 10. The two sides met once earlier this year, Cowra just winning 26-24.

Narromine Jets President,

Michael Burns, said that the club is delighted to have fi nished second (fi rst grade), third (league tag), minor premiers (reserve grade) and fourth (Woodbridge Cup youth league).

“The positions that we have fi nished, is the best that we could do,” Burns said.

“We’re very happy… we set that goal a few weeks ago, and we achieved it.

“It’s great for all our sides to have a great opportunity in each competition.

“It’s also not too often a club comes away from Cobar with three wins.”

In fi rst grade against Cobar, hooker Sam Gainsford impressed with a smart display from dummy-half.

“We just kept going to the

“Our forward pack stood up and they all played big minutes. Sam (Gainsford) was always in the game, always involved.”

League Tag won comfortably at Cobar, but Burns feels the side still has improvement in it.

“Their best is still to come,” Burns said.

“Our combinations developed across the last few years held us in good stead to get the win.”

Reserve Grade just continued on their winning ways at Cobar.

“There is some really good footballers in that team, some blokes that used to be quality fi rst graders, and young blokes

that will be fi rst graders.”

Of the younger brigade, hooker Rory Miller-Coen has impressed constantly and scored two tries against Cobar.

Miller-Coen plays well above his weight, and is an excellent low defender, Burns said.

Narromine’s Reserve Grade has won the Castlereagh Rugby League minor premiership, and will next play in the major semi-fi nal at Coolah on the weekend of August 16/17.

First grade captain-coach Cox topped the Castlereagh Rugby League point-scoring list by a mammoth 80 points.

Cox scored 23 tries and kicked 50 goals to score 192 points, being well-clear of Gulgong stalwart Brad James (112 points) in the top grade.

Raced at Cobar – Saturday, August 2 Based at Wangaratta, Victoria, trainer Russell Green has often raced his team at meetings in western NSW and, on Saturday, he won the 1700-metre DJW and Wells Cobar Picnic Cup with his entry, “Lord Percy”.

Starting the $8 outsider in the Cup, Lord Percy (Zara Lewis) took the lead from “Outback Cod” and, in the straight, fought-off the challenge from “Coastal Groove” (Leandro Ribeiro at $2.30) and “Joshua” (Todd Bailey on the $2 favourite).

In upcoming races, “Blackhill Kitty” is entitled to be early favourite for the $50,000 Picnic Champions Series Final at Dubbo in September, after winning at Cobar and fi nishing on top of the point score qualifying ladder for the fi nal.

Louie’s Legacy popular winner with locals at Forbes Raced at Forbes – Sunday, August 3 Barbara Joseph and her sons, Paul Jones and Matt Jones, operate a trainers partnership at Canberra and regularly start horses at Forbes.

So, it was a popular result with locals among the big crowd when their entry, “Louie’s Legacy” won the $50,000 Bankstown Sports Forbes Cup with Quayde Krogh in the saddle.

Formerly based in Queensland, Kroghe had a stint with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable at Randwick, before moving to Canberra where he has ridden many winners for the Joseph-Jones partnership.

In the 1600-metres Big Dance Eligibility Cup, Louie’s Legacy settled further back than midfield with the $2.30 favourite, “High Dandy” leading the 14 horse field in the run to the home turn from “Just Go Bang”, “Aimpoint”, and “County Kilkenny”.

“Send Me Grey” and “Capricious Belle” set the pace before Ishikari (Donovan Dillon on the $3.10 favourite) fi nished best to account for “Blackfish” (Izzy Neale at $9) and “Wolf Island” (Mathew Cahill at $5.50).

Former South African jockey, Donovan Dillon, was again the rider when the Dean Mirfin-trained “Shaddup” (in from $6 to $4.60) led from the top of the straight to win the Club Forbes Showcase Class Two Handicap by more than two lengths from “Royal Bombadier” (Mikayla Weir on the $4 favourite) and “Grand Oyster” (Jake Pracey-Holmes at $18).

An annual lawn bowls day originally held in Walgett, and now in Narromine, remembers a man who made his mark across music, rugby league, and humanity.

The 2025 Annual Gub Thorne Day will be held at Narromine Bowling Club on Saturday, August 9.

This lawn bowls tournament remembers the late Neville “Gub” Thorne, who was a talented rugby league player, lining up with various sides including the Walgett Dragons, Coonamble Bears, Dubbo Macquarie, and the Gundagai Tigers.

He was also a member of

the famous 1974 Coonamble premiership side that won the Group 14 title, which included some well-known rugby league names like the late Steve “Bear” Hall and Frank Fish.

From Walgett, Gub Thorne was also well known as a bass player in the famous Jimmy Little Trio.

This annual bowls tournament has been played for more than 20 years.

Joe Flick and Mark Smith decided to move the tournament to Narromine, where the event has now been held for around the past five years.

At Dubbo Macquarie, Gub Thorne played with men like Mark Smith, Pat Smith (who was also Gub’s captain at Macquarie and Gundagai), bush legend Marshall Peachey, and former Penrith Panther, Noel Sing.

Bowlers manage hot/ cold conditions

By JOHN EDWARDS Our bowlers managed cold and hot conditions over the last week and produced some great bowls in the process.

On Thursday, July 31, social bowls results for the 12 bowlers who took to the green in chilly conditions were as follows: f Ian Barling, Noi and James narrowly defeated Chris Sharpe, Trumby and Danny in a close encounter, 20 to 19. f Dave, Carl and Mick E. comfortably defeated Bruce, Richard and Homo, 24 to 16.

Winners on the day were Mick and team.

On Sunday, August 3, 14 bowlers enjoyed the much warmer conditions, with results as follows: - Noi and Mitch had a convincing win over Mark and Greg, 16 to 11.

- Chris and Ray won by a whisker against Cliffy and Dave, 12 to 11 - Bruce, Carl and Cranky also had a narrow win over Richard, Sticker and Danny, 12 to 10.

Winners on the day were Noi and Mitch.

Our Annual Gub Thorne Day will be held this Saturday, and nominations have closed with 20 teams set to participate. We thank the Narromine Star for its story on Gub Thorne, and hope it inspires more people to come on down to the club to watch the action.

We’ll have breakfast on the go and lunch after the first

two games. This should be a great day and hopefully the weather is kind.

Joke of the week: The pet fish A man decides he wants to fish. Unfortunately, his favourite spot became illegal to fish in. Undeterred, he fishes there for two hours, and at this point, he already has a bucket full of fish and he’s still fishing.

Out of nowhere a cop comes up and tells him: “You know you can’t fish here, right? It’s illegal, I’m gonna have to arrest you.”

The man hides the pole and replies, “Oh no, no those are my pet fish. I just come here every week or so, drop them in the pond, and once they are done swimming they jump back in and I go home.”

At this point the officer smirks, he knows the man’s lying, so he says, “Well then show me, if you can, truly show me that they will do that then I’ll let you go.”

The man agrees and dumps the fish into the pond. A few minutes pass...

“So when are the fish jumping back in the bucket?” asks the officer smugly. “ W h at f i s h? ” s ay s the man.

“He did play bowls at Walgett… he fell in love with the sport and wasn’t a bad bowler.

“We wanted something to remember him and celebrate his life after he passed.

“So we started the tournament at Walgett and it’s been going ever since.”

Gub Thorne toured Australia as part of the Jimmy Little Trio and played at big clubs and famous gigs. He also worked for Telstra.

Flick, originally from Collarenebri near Walgett and now living in Queanbeyan after residing in Dubbo for many years, described Gub Thorne as an all-round great bloke.

“Gub was the life of the party and had the skills to go with

it,” he said.

“Gub was a loveable, largerthan-life people that people always talk about it.

“People will be sitting around the pub having a beer and will say: ‘I remember when Gub used to do this or Gub did that’.

“His name always comes up when there is a gathering of blokes.

“It’s a day to talk about old times, and good times, and remember people like Gub.” The format will be triples, with three games of 15 ends each.

The day will commence with breakfast, before the first two matches are played.

Lunch then follows before the final 15-end game is held.

At least 20 teams will be in action, and more than $1000 in total prize money is expected to be available.

Outside of Smith and Flick,

countless other people have helped across the years to keep the event going.

People have travelled from Bathurst, including Gub’s brother Geoffrey Thorne and other centres like Lightning Ridge, Narrabri and Tamworth to compete in the past.

Gub’s sister Pat will also be attending, along with other relatives like TJ Simpson, who will be the DJ for the evening.

A perpetual trophy is presented to the winners.

Flick was appreciative of the efforts of Kevin Ryder, the Narromine Bowling Club staff and event sponsor Colin ‘Bluey’ Young.

Ron beats weather to win weekly title

By NORM LEWIS On Saturday last, drizzly rain greeted nine Geriatric golfers at hit-off time .

The group, anxious for a game, started play in light drizzle which soon stopped, allowing them to complete their rounds despite the freezing cold wind which followed the rain.

Winner on the day was Ron who carded a score of 23 points. It appears that Ron has corrected his problems which were mentioned last week!

Kevin took second place with a score of 21 points, and Mal M bagged the nearest-to-the-pin

prize. Gus took the NAGA trophy on 15 points, at which he was a little lucky as there were three other players also breathing down his neck on 16 points!

No pool comp was played this week, no doubt all players must have been suffering from the cold weather.

This week, weather permitting, the Gerries will play Wednesday afternoon on the front nine at the early-afternoon hit off time, and on Saturday morning at the usual early m morning time.

GOLF CLUB NOTES

Berryman and Harding champs!

By NORM LEWIS The feature event on the golfing calendar last weekend was the Club Mixed Foursome Championships. This event was played over 36 holes on Sunday.

A small field of only ten players participated in the event. Winners on the day were Betty Berryman and Tony Harding. From memory I think this pairing were the defending champions. The winners had rounds of 76, 78, for a total 154, to defeat by a whisker Megan Murphy and Craig Duff who had rounds of 78, 79, for a total 157.

Congratulations to Betty and Tony on their win and thanks to all who participated.

It was a pretty quiet weekend for golfers as the weather did not attract big fields.

On Saturday, the event was a 4Ball-Worst Ball over 18 holes, contested by a tiny field of only six players. Winners were Rob Gainsford and Rob Williams with a score of 25 points. Runners-up were Greg Kerr and Tom Hogan on 23 points.

Duane Faro-Mann won the nearest-the-pin (NTP) on the 10th and the long drive on the first.

Kearines and Rob Gainsford. The was no winner of the drawn jackpot.

Sunday’s event, for those not playing in the mixed event, was an individual Stableford for a club trophy, which was contested by just seven players. The winner was Mick Purtell with 36 points, from Rob Williams on 35 points. Williams had a field day, winning both the NTP and long drive events. The drawn jackpot was not won.

Today’s the day (Thursday, August 7) of the Narromine Veterans Open, an 18-hole event.

Let’s hope the weather is kinder!

This weekend features the Macquarie Clothing Monthly Medal, an 18-hole Stroke event, with a Vets nine-hole off the front nine in conjunction, as well as a 36-hole Foursomes Championship for trophies donated by Ross King.
