Her role within the community extends far beyond the duties of her job. “I love what I do,” she says, “but I’m not defined by my uniform.” She believes that the best way to truly make a difference is to build a rapport with the people. She accomplishes this by serving as a youth education officer, motivational speaker and all-around mentor for students at over 30 schools. “More than 40,000 children,” she says, herself a little astonished by the number. Her friends and family refer to her humanitarianism – what she simply calls her “big heart” – as “il dono,” her gift, and she sees it as her personal duty to share it with as many people as possible, “leaving a little bit of [her] heart behind” wherever she goes. Of course, Passarelli’s dono isn’t merely something she was born with. She credits her “superhero” parents – who came to Canada from Rende, Calabria – and their immigrant experience with helping to shape who she is, teaching her that anything can be overcome through family, faith and community. “The second my father stepped foot in Canada,” she says, “he adopted the Canadian life, but he always stayed true to being Italian.” As she sees it, this means having “respect, loyalty, courage and compassion,” – all values she tries to instill upon the children. Passarelli is about as humble as they come, insisting that she’s not in it for herself but for the kids, who “bring a sense of innocence and wonder to a world that can often be cruel and unforgiving.” She doesn’t need accolades or even “thanks” – although she’s certainly received her fair share of both, including a nomination for the Character of Hero at York Region’s Character Community Awards – because “the tremendous love and respect from the kids has made it all worth while.” In keeping with her selfless nature, she asked that we end on this note: If there are any children who need help, or who simply need someone to talk to, there is always an open door and an open heart with Officer Antoniella “Toni” Passarelli.
Il suo ruolo all'interno della comunità va ben oltre i suoi incarichi lavorativi. “Amo la mia professione”, dice Passarelli, “ma la mia uniforme non definisce ciò che sono.” Crede che il miglior modo per fare la differenza sia di instaurare un rapporto con le persone e raggiunge questo obiettivo lavorando con i giovani come educatrice, relatrice motivazionale e mentore versatile in oltre 30 scuole. “Più di 40.000 bambini,” precisa Passarelli, lei stessa un tantino meravigliata da tale numero. Amici e famigliari chiamano il suo umanitarismo – che lei definisce semplicemente come “un grande cuore” – “il dono”, e per Passarelli condividerlo con più persone possibile è un dovere personale, e lo fa “donando un pò del suo cuore” dovunque lei vada. Naturalmente questo dono Passarelli non lo possiede dalla nascita, e attribuisce gran parte del merito ai suoi genitori-supereroi – immigrati in Canada da Rende, in Calabria – e alla loro esperienza di immigrati, nel contribuire a formare la persona che è oggi, insegnandole che tutto si può superare con la famiglia, la fede e la comunità. “Non appena giunto in Canada mio padre ha adottato lo stile di vita canadese, ma sempre rimanendo fedele alle sue radici italiane.” Secondo Passarelli questo significa avere “rispetto, fedeltà, coraggio e compassione,” – valori che cerca di infondere nei bambini. Passarelli non potrebbe mostrare maggiore umiltà quando sostiene di non fare tutto ciò per se stessa ma per i bambini, che “portano un senso di innocenza e meraviglia in un mondo troppo spesso crudele e spietato.” Non ha bisogno di elogi e neppure “ringraziamenti” – sebbene ne abbia certo ricevuti molti, tra cui una nomination per il Character of Hero nel contesto della York Region’s Character Community Awards – in quanto “lo straordinario amore e rispetto ricevuto dai bambini ha reso il tutto degno di essere fatto.” In linea con la sua natura altruista, Passarelli ha voluto concludere così: tutti i bambini che hanno bisogno di aiuto, o che semplicemente cercano qualcuno con cui parlare, troveranno sempre una por ta aper ta e un cuore aperto con l'agente Antoniella “Toni” Passarelli.
