A Disquisition on the Song of the Italians Una disquisizione sulla canzone degli italiani

century ago it was called The Anthem of Mameli. Words by Goffredo Mameli and music by Michele Novarro (1847).

The Canzone degli Italiani was composed during the campaign aimed at liberating the kingdom of the two Sicilies, Naples and Palermo, from the Bourbons of Spain who reigned there at the time.

Giuseppe Garibaldi’s intention, with a positive outcome, was to unite Italy and deliver it to the House of Savoy. Consequently, Canzone degli Italiani, inserted in those times is very plausible. But times have slightly changed, which is why nowadays I find the Inno di Mameli out of place and outdated. Let’s explore.

BROTHERS OF ITALY: It seems strange to me to call Italians brothers when half of the Italian population hates the other half.

FRATELLI D’ITALIA: Mi sembra strano chiamare gli Italiani fratelli quando la metà della popolazione italiana odia l’altra metà.

WHERE IS VICTORY? VICTORY WILL BOW HER HEAD: This is an invocation to the Roman goddess Victoria to crown the liberator of Italy in Rome. Unfortunately, the Roman goddess Victoria has retired and as a result we no longer talk about crowns.

DOV’È LA VITTORIA LE PORGA LA CHIOMA: Questa è un’invocazione alla dea romana Vittoria affinché incoroni il liberatore dell’Italia a Roma. Purtroppo la dea romana Vittoria è andata in pensione di conseguenza di corone non se ne parla più.

SINCE A SLAVE OF ROME, GOD MADE HER: Nevermind; God created absolutely nothing. He was busy with quite other matters.

CHÉ SCHIAVA DI ROMA IDDIO LA CREÒ: Lasciamo perdere che Iddio creò proprio niente. Era in tutt’altre faccende affaccendato.

LET US UNITE IN A COHORT, WE ARE READY FOR DEATH: The cohorts, which were part of the Roman army, consisted of 600 soldiers, the 10th part of a legion, and they were ready to die. As far as I know, in the last 50 years, there has only been one Italian who was ready to die. On April 14, 2004, the entrepreneur Fabrizio Quattrocchi, kidnapped in Iraq, said before being killed: “I’ll show you how an Italian dies.” I challenge you to find one who is ready to die nowadays. Among other things, Mameli’s hymn is the only hymn to the world that invokes death twice.

Bisogna considerare che la Canzone degli Italiani venne composta durante la campagna atta a liberare il Regno delle due Sicilie, Napoli e Palermo, dai Borboni di Spagna che all’epoca vi regnavano.

L’intento, di Giuseppe Garibaldi, con esito positivo, era quello di unire l’Italia è consegnarla alla casa Savoia. Di conseguenza, la canzone degli Italiani, inserita in quei tempi è plausibilissima. Però i tempi sono leggermente cambiati, ecco perché al giorno d’oggi L’Inno di Mameli lo trovò fuori luogo e fuori dai tempi. Vediamo un po’.

STRINGIAMCI A COORTE SIAM PRONTI ALLA MORTE: Le coorti, che facevano parte dell’esercito romano, erano composte da 600 soldati. La decima parte di una legione ed erano pronti alla morte.

Che io sappia, negli ultimi 50 anni c’è stato solo un Italiano che è stato pronto a morire. Il 14 Aprile del 2004, l’imprenditore Fabrizio Quattrocchi, rapito in Iraq, prima di essere ucciso disse: “Vi faccio vedere come muore un Italiano”. Sfido a trovarne uno che ai giorni nostri sia pronto a morire. Tra le altre cose, l’inno di Mameli è l’unico al modo che invoca la morte ben due volte.

I really think the time has come to archive the Canzone Degli Italiani because it no longer makes sense to exist. I would propose an air known and respected throughout the world, written and composed by legendary Giuseppe Verdi. I am referring to Nabucco. Naturally, the text should be changed and the music shortened, but it would be very representative of an Italy renowned for its culture and its artists.

Penso proprio che sia giunto il momento di archiviare la Canzone degli Italiani perché oramai non ha più senso di esistere. Io proporrei un’aria conosciuta e rispettata in tutto il mondo. Scritta è composta da un grande. Giuseppe Verdi e mi riferisco al Nabucco.

Naturalmente il testo dovrebbe essere cambiato e la musica accorciata ma sarebbe molto rappresentativa di un’Italia famosa nel mondo per la sua cultura e i suoi artisti.
