Palmetto Bluff Club

Letter from the Director of Operations

Palmetto Bluff Members,

We hope you enjoyed summer! For those who remained in the Lowcountry, we’re excited for cooler temperatures in the coming months. I would like to recognize and thank our team of associates and third-party contractors who worked effectively to clean up from the approximate 15 inches of rain courtesy of Tropical Storm Debby. In the 48 hours after the storm, you’d hardly recognize that it had passed through, with the exception of the lingering puddles of water.

In this edition of Palmetto Bluff Club Living, you will find information regarding events such as the Primal Fit Sandbar Workout, the Wilson Cup Golf Tournament, the Canebrake, Farmers Markets, Brunch at Buffalos, the Juniper Cup, and weekly Conservancy events. You can also read about Halloween events such as the Haunting of Palmetto Bluff, various PBGO activities, the Haunted Wine Dinner, and the Pumpkin Patch Pop-Up.

This edition’s feature article is on the Associate Holiday Fund. The Holiday Fund was established in 2022. It’s a way Members can show their thanks and appreciation to our associates. As you will see, the article provides a list of frequently asked questions that provides more information on how to contribute, as well as which associates participate in the fund distribution. Please note that the deadline to contribute to the fund is November 25, 2024, and the proceeds will be distributed to eligible associates beginning on Tuesday, December 3.

We are looking forward to a busy fall season with a variety of events and activities for everyone to enjoy. Please remember that your constructive feedback is welcome as we continue to strive to exceed Member expectations.

Sincerely,

Palmetto Bluff Club

What’s Growing at The Farm

It’s Pumpkin Season!

Early in July, Farmer Shane and Farmer Wyatt planted pumpkins with strategic timing so that they would all be ready come mid-October. Some of the varieties were planted a whole month apart. They planted five different types of pumpkins:

1. Kratos, our normal-sized pumpkins,

2. Autumn Pearl, smaller, “pie” pumpkins,

3. Fairytale, which can be olive or light green,

4. Cinderella’s Carriage, which are short and wide, and

5. Phantomita, which are dark and lime green, similar-looking to watermelons!

Palmetto Bluff Members are welcome to come enjoy the pumpkins at several fall festivities including a Pumpkin Patch Pop-Up on Friday, October 25 from 4-6pm where you can pick out a pumpkin to carve or simply use as decor!

New Fall Produce

In August, Farmer Shane and Farmer Wyatt tore up the old summer plastic that was lining the rows of the farm. In midSeptember, they will lay 32-36 new rows of plastic to prepare for the new fall crops, which will include three lettuce variations, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, three variations of radishes, bunching onions, and more!

Farmers Markets

Farmers Markets will begin again on October 9, and will occur bi-weekly throughout fall into winter, leading to our holiday market. These markets offer a diverse showcase of outside Lowcountry farmers and artisans, as well as homegrown produce, breads and bakery items, and health and fitness offereings from our very own team at Palmetto Bluff.

Meet the New Chickens

Recently, the chicken population grew at The Farm! These new chickens live in the silo, but they are free to roam about The Farm by day. There’s one rooster, two hens, three five-montholds, two two-month-olds. One of the hens is sitting on eggs that are expected to hatch soon!

Fitness & Wellness

FROM GOLD MEDALS TO DAILY WELLNESS: LESSONS FROM OLYMPIANS’ FOR A HEALTHIER LIFE

My neighborhood, like many neighborhoods, enjoys hosting various gatherings around the holidays. At the most recent event, I met a new neighbor who lives a few houses down from us who assumed that my wife and I were training for the Olympics because he always sees us working out in our garage gym or running in the neighborhood. He was partly joking, but truly assumed that we had an event coming up and gave us way more credit than we deserved for our regular fitness routine. It’s funny — when you regularly exercise these days, people assume that you’re training for something. That’s how abnormal lifting heavy things and carrying them down the street or jogging consistently seems to people. Let’s take a step back this month and think about this comment. What if we were training for the Olympics?

Just last month, the Summer Olympics were held once again. This quadrennial schedule has been consistent since the modern Olympics began in 1896, with a few exceptions including both World Wars and the recent Covid Pandemic. Every four years athletes from around the world are tested and they compete. What if we approached our days knowing that every four years there would be another test?

Olympic gymnasts and swimmers are known for their rigorous and demanding training schedules. Both groups of athletes often train multiple times a day six days per week, totaling four to seven hours daily. Their training schedules are essentially full-time jobs and, in most cases, they aren’t even ready for the Olympics until they’ve achieved over 10 years of consistent training. Even then, there’s no guarantee you will make it. Research shows that only a fraction of the world’s population, 0.0001%, will ever earn the right to call themselves an Olympian because of the elite levels that athletes need to reach. What if we trained at this level of consistency for optimum health, and even then, our lifespan was short?

This is such an interesting parallel because in life, just like training for the Olympics, there are no guarantees. We can be diligent with our exercise, healthy eating, and sleep, but still get hit with an unexpected health diagnosis just like not making the team for the Olympics. So, the question I have for you is the same that I would have for the athletes training for the Olympics. Would your efforts still be worth it? By choosing your healthy lifestyle, would you have any regrets, even if your life were to end today?

Fitness & Wellness

Fall, and any change of season for that matter, is a time for reflection. I don’t want you to walk away from this month’s article thinking that I want you to start training like an Olympian. I just think that we each must make a decision — a daily one. We can choose to focus on taking care of our bodies and eating the right things, or we can choose not to. But what is the cost of your daily decisions four years from now? I can only hope that you will be able to pass your test.

NUTRITIOUS PUMPKIN SOUP

Total Time: 55 minutes

Ingredients:

• 1/2 Tbsp. olive oil

• 1 sweet onion, diced

• 1 Tbsp. minced garlic

• 1 Teaspoon ground ginger

• 1 head cauliflower, diced florets

• 4 cups vegetable or chicken broth

• 1 can unsweetened pumpkin puree

• 1 Tbsp. maple syrup

1. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion and saute until soft and translucent (about five to ten minutes). Add garlic and ginger and cook for about one more minute, stirring.

2. Add cauliflower, broth, and pumpkin. Turn heat to high, bring to a boil, then cover. Reduce heat to low and simmer (covered) for about 20 - 30 minutes or until cauliflower is tender.

3. Stir in maple syrup, salt, and coconut milk.

4. Remove from heat and use an immersion blender or regular blender to puree the soup until smooth.

In 2022, we started an annual initiative, our Employee Holiday Fund. The Employee Holiday Fund serves as a way for Members to show gratitude to the Palmetto Bluff staff. Members will have the opportunity to contribute to this fund which will then be distributed to the Palmetto Bluff associates who do not participate in the annual company performance incentive bonus program. The gift amount is based on the employees’ status, full-time/part-time, and years of service.

Members often ask how they can help us attract and retain the best possible staff. As you know, a great team of associates is the lifeblood of any community.

In addition to showing your appreciation to the staff when they provide outstanding service to you, the Holiday Fund is an additional opportunity to show your appreciation to all the ladies and gentlemen who make Palmetto Bluff such a special place.

The choice to contribute to this fund is entirely yours. There is absolutely no obligation to contribute. You may do so on the member website if you choose to contribute on the Make Payment page. Please note that your election is confidential. On behalf of the entire Palmetto Bluff team, we thank you for your ongoing support and generosity.
