"He's as laid-back in person as he is in public," Engel & Völkers realtor Arthur Martens says of his client, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson. "And his wife is a bunch of fun—she’s as gregarious as he is calm." Martens should know. The $920,000 sale of the Carsons' West Palm Beach house last week did not go as smoothly as they had hoped. After the price was agreed upon with the buyers, Washington, D.C. real estate executive Stephen Lustgarten and his wife, -
"we got into inspection and found we had mold all over because of some leaks in the roof," Martens says. The roof had to be completely redone, along with some additional exterior changes to bring the house up to Palm Beach County code. "With many parties it would've been a major lawsuit but because of the levelheadedness of Dr. Carson and his wife and the buyers we were able to come to a win-win agreement despite the unplanned costs to both parties." While the roof wasn't completed until this past Monday, the closing went through on Friday, so now the secretary can rest easy (not that his cool demeanor was ever rattled). Scroll down for a look inside the 6,155-square-foot house.
The property sits in a country club community called the Club at Ibis.
