URBAN DESIGN ANALYSIS OF CENTURY GARDEN, CALGARY 05 02 ULI HINES COMPETITION: RE-TIE BY RELANDED ULI HINES COMPETITION Group Work [2023]
PLANNING: TAPESTRY AT 07
NODE
This site located east from Calgary downtown, in section no 13 of township 24. The concept begins with reimagining Barlow/ Max Bell station to fit in an ideal scenario where the station passes underground through the site allowing the opportunity of TOD development and developing a successful urban design in the site. The project’s vision is to create a community providing adaptive development that allows sharing resources and provide access and connection to shared resources.
Existing features sch as historic rail line, food hub, Transit opportunities are emphasized and the site is sectioned into districts with unique identities focusing on revitalizing history, enhancing existing central food hub, health, culture and industry, continuing nature, education, etc. With focus on multimodal connection and accessibility, strategies to connections between district and nodes help develop the building morphology of the site. It then determines the parcel types and the building typology. Group Work [2022]
My involvement in the project began with analyzing the major elements in the site to guide the concept as well as creating analysis maps. Then I was majorly involved in detailed master planning and then towards the phasing plan for the development.
Urban Tapestry at Shaganappi point is planned to be a vibrant urban community that integrates threads of ecology, community, enterprise, and celebrates place as a meaning of fostering holistic, sustainable, and human centered connections. The proposal takes advantage of the physical features of the site and create community nodes which are connected with re-imagined streets. The planning creates a tapestry of housing options within parcels and throughout the site. Alongside being involved in the planning process from start to finish, the following graphics were my contribution in the project.
The community center node development is a continuation of the Urban Tapestry project and focuses on the development of the central activity center. The center is located such that it has clear visual direction from the Shaganappi Station with the main street activating the stretch ending at the community center. The site takes advantage of its elevation with landmark viewpoints and blends in community activity that supports various activity in the node.
Despite being in one of the best locations in Calgary downtown overlooking the bow river, the site is currently used as parking and houses a bicycle repair shop. The proposed site planning recognizes the pedestrian movement and nodes and repurposes the site as a mixed-use commercial/ residential development. The commercial blocks mirror the commercial development on the south, whereas the warm toned landscaping and pedestrian focused programming blend in with the bow river pathway in the north. The existing desire path connects proposed nodes within the site which is further highlighted by colored paving.
Traffic and pedestrian flows are studied to introduce increased pedestrian access and limits vehicle access into the site. Further considerations of stepped seating following site terrain, road safety measures, street edge continuity, sustainable approaches in landscaping has been used to create a vibrant space continuing throughout the site. The project was completed individually from site visit, analysis to planning and design.
This project analyses the various urban design elements in Century Garden appears to have high potential for a successful park in the midst of Calgary downtown. However, elements like sense of safety, recent lack of sensory elements and downtown vacancy have rendered the site desolate and rarely used. This project is a graphical record of in-person analysis visit in different times of day and the week as well as research on the site.
Description Group Work
This project is a graphical record of in-person analysis visit in different times of day and the week as well as research on the site. It was then rated on various measures of categories of urban design listed below. I was involved in this project from in-person analysis to graphical reporting in a booklet. The graphics listed here are majorly created by me.
Creating regional planning policies for Calgary Municipal Regional Board with consideration for Climatic Adaptation. Firstly, we analyzed the existing growth plan through a climate change lens and formulated and prioritized three adaptation strategies. Then, we created policies for two strategies. While the research, strategies and policy writing were created as a group work, I was majorly involved in strategy and policy creation for the Water Management Strategy.
Rail-Purpose was a tactical urbanism project near the Barlow Maxbell station. We highlighted the historic and physical aspects of the site and built a working Rail Cart to exemplify how the place can be activated.
The Following models are compiled from various design studios. They are made from paper, ply and made from laser-cutting as well as hand built.
