Publisher’s Note Spring has sprung and cherry trees have blossomed. It is hard to believe that when we took the cover shot two weeks ago there was snow on the ground. West Point Cycles is featured in this issue, along with father and daughter success stories, Graeme McKenney, owner of Framing & Art Centre, and Victoria McKenney, owner of Enviable Designs. We also had the pleasure of getting to know Leo Franken, owner of The Spectacle Shoppe. What can we look forward to this spring? For many of us with kids, this season is a marathon full of sports, recitals and graduation plans. The Kerrisdale Business Association is busy planning Kerrisdale Carnival Days with sidewalk sales and entertainment. Kerrisdale Little League parades down 41st Avenue with marching bands and there will be free horse carriage rides.

ON THE COVER Andrea Taylor has lived in Vancouver her entire life. For the past 8 years she has worked at West Point Cycles, B.C.’s oldest bike shop. In 2005 she completed a degree in Human Kinetics at UBC. She is a certified bike fitter at West Point Multisport and leads group road rides from this location in the spring and summer. She has participated in triathlons for the past 5 years. Victoria Gilbert has been living in Vancouver for almost 5 years. She came to Vancouver to attend UBC. She grew up on the Saanich Peninsula on Vancouver Island. She has raced in long distance triathlons for the last 4 years. Last summer she represented Canada at the ITU Long Distance World Championships in Spain and finished 5th in her age category. WEST POINT CYCLES: 83 Years of Pedalling Power by Sarah Gordon

You have to admire Fred Arnold, who from 1930 to 1971 was the original owner of West Point Cycles. Arnold was so dedicated to his business (which was then called Fred’s West Point Cycles) that he actually lived on site, which explains why there is a fireplace at the back of the W. 10th Avenue location. Building on the success of the Point Grey store, a second shop opened in Kerrisdale approximately 30 years ago. Today both West Point Cycles locations are going strong with general manager Sara Woodburn at the helm. Sometimes mishaps have a way of opening new doors, and such is the case with Woodburn. She was a former competitive runner; however an injury forced her to seek a new sport so she took up cycling, which in turn led to her career at West Point Cycles. She has worked with the company for fifteen years and has been general manager for six of those years.

Woodburn celebrates West Point Cycles reputation for excellent customer service. Their friendly and helpful staff all share a love of cycling and believe that using bicycles daily as transportation is important for our community and environment. She points out that this business is unique because there are a large number of female employees in management. This is not a shop where you feel intimidated; the staff will provide help in layman’s terms, rather than technical jargon (although they will happily speak ‘tech’ talk too). Vancouver is well known for having a dedicated year round biking community. Expanded bike lanes, part of the City of Vancouver’s efforts to create a sustainable city, have helped to increase the popularity of cycling. FRAMING & ART CENTRE Some family’s gene pools are loaded with creativity; such is the case with Graeme McKenney and Victoria McKenney. Graeme McKenney has owned and operated his framing store in Kerrisdale since 1975. He was attracted to this particular business as he felt it would nicely dovetail with his creative passion for style and decorating. Little was Graeme McKenney to know that 28 years down the line he would work alongside his talented daughter, interior designer, Victoria McKenney. You may remember U-Frame It stores, which were popular in the 1970s through the early 1980s. It was an affordable way to frame your own artwork with the assistance of a trained professional. Thinking it was a great concept; in 1975 Graeme McKenney set off on his personal adventure into the world of framing, and opened the fourth U-Frame It franchise in Canada.

He had seen his father start a manufacturing business and observed the wonders, both positive and negative, of self-employment. Graeme McKenney and his wife Janet took the risk, as they wanted to advance their careers and control their futures without having to climb the corporate ladder. In 1975 McKenney opened his original shop, which was located on West Boulevard. By 1982 U-Frame It stores were replaced by Flair Framing, with a focus on custom orders. McKenney operated his business under this name from 1982 to 1989. In 1989 he relocated the business to its current home, and that year Framing & Art Centre, the largest art and framing franchise in Canada, bought out Flair Framing. The number of frames on display at Framing & Art Centre is enough to take your breath away. In fact, Graeme McKenney offers 2,000 frame samples in different woods, metals, colours and finishes in addition to 3,000 mat samples. There is literally a frame

ENVIABLE DESIGNS Raised in a household where art took centre stage, it seems that Graeme McKenney’s daughter, Victoria McKenney, was destined to have a keen appreciation of aesthetics. Cut from the same cloth as Graeme McKeeney, who was inspired by his father, Victoria McKenney says that growing up with an entrepreneurial father molded her career choice. She says, “After seeing him run his business, it was clear to me that I wanted to work for myself. Once I finished design school it never even occurred to me to work for a design company, I simply started my own business without hesitation.” Victoria McKenney began working at her father’s business on a part-time basis when she was 17. She graduated from UBC in 2001 where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History. As part of her education, Victoria travelled across Europe where she studied art history in Florence, Italy and learned the Italian language. In addition to her university degree, Victoria McKenney also received an Interior Design certificate from Vancouver Community College in 2003, all the while continuing to work part-time at Framing and Art Centre. Ten years ago, upon graduating from design school, Victoria McKenney started her own business, which she named Enviable Designs. She initially worked out of an office however; two years ago she opened a studio that is conveniently located next to her father’s shop. In fact, there is an interior doorway

allowing clients to walk between the two businesses. The Enviable Designs studio gives Victoria McKenney and her team of interior designers a place to meet with clients and show them samples to help bring design concepts to life. Victoria McKenney is the principal interior designer and is assisted by Alli Chapkin, Karly Duncan and Amy Kassam. Victoria McKenney describes Enviable Designs as the natural evolution of her interior design training combined with her love of art. Inspired by her extensive travels in Western Europe, she is well known for creating timeless and elegant designs through the use of classic lines and materials. Regardless of a project’s budget, Victoria McKenney is capable of creating beautiful spaces. Enviable Designs strives to build environments based on clients’ desires, and ensure that their design dream is fully realized. Leo Franken, owner of The Spectacle Shoppe, grew up in Montreal where his father was the proprietor of Paul Franken Opticians on Chemin Queen Mary. In 1967 Franken began working alongside his father, and in 1970 took over the family business. For forty-six years he has carried on the tradition of providing professional service while offering his customers excellent quality and fashionable eye wear. When Franken moved to Vancouver in 1978 he instantly felt akin to the Kerrisdale shopping district as it reminded him of the Snowdon neighbourhood where his father’s store had been located. While Franken didn’t set up shop right away in Kerrisdale (he worked in other parts of the Lower Mainland), when The Spectacle Shoppe came up for sale in 2001 he jumped at the opportunity to purchase the business. Kerrisdale is a community of both tradition and continuity. Franken reveals that for the last 50 years his location has continuously operated as an optical business. It was originally called Western Optical and was renamed The Spectacle Shoppe in 1999 under new ownership. Franken is a wealth of information and has a

keen eye to help you find the perfect frame to complement your features. He is trained to fit you with single vision, bi-focal, progressive spectacle lenses or contact lenses. He works alongside Cliff Andersen, who is known for his gentle manner in assisting clients to confidently make their selection. With over 30 year of experience fitting and customizing frames, Andersen’s motto is “If a pair fits well, it usually looks good.” Morgan Nahanee is the third member of The Spectacle Shoppe’s team. As a licensed contact lens fitter and dispensing optician, she is eager to help with your optical needs. It is evident that they all enjoy working together in this small shop. The Spectacle Shoppe carries a large selection of frames, and whether your choice is based on budget, fashion, or a designer’s name, there is a pair to meet your needs. Franken says that one of the major shifts that has taken place during his career is the fact that spectacles have crossed the barrier from being ‘uncool’ to making a fashion statement. Currently larger retro frames are in vogue, and he indicates that frames tend to go through a 3 to 4 year evolution in styles. He points out that modern frames are much

Franken takes pride in creating fun window displays. He says that “Manny” the mannequin is always prominently featured in the starring role, and elicits plenty of chuckles from passers-by and customers alike. In fact, Manny has become somewhat of a Kerrisdale fixture. For one brief period he left the store to play a dead man in a local opera, other than that, he has watched the world go by on West Boulevard for the last eleven years. The Vancouver film industry holds particularly fond memories for Franken. He recalls the eight years he spent fitting special effect contact lenses for shows such as The X-Files and Poltergeist. He says that although the days were long, as he was also juggling his day job as an optician, he really enjoyed and misses the work.

It is clear that Franken has found other ways to channel his energy and creativity. He is the past president of the Kerrisdale Business Association and is an active volunteer with the Jewish Community Centre. He feels passionate about giving back to Kerrisdale, a community that stirs up memories of Chemin Queen Mary.

In lieu of charging for repairs or adjustments to frames, Franken asks customers to make a $5 donation to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. He reports that they raise approximately $1,000 for the charity each year. The Spectacle Shoppe does not place their products on sale as they strive to offer the most competitive prices. The only exception is during Kerrisdale Days when they offer a $50 special on discontinued frames.
