Our cover story features Toña Bakery and Café Dunbar’s newest sweet spot, opened by pastry chef Daniel Muñoz and his partner Cosette Bote. This familyrun gem combines Daniel’s Venezuelan heritage with his refined French pastry training to offer a delicious mix of classic and Latin-inspired treats. Located in the former Sweet Somethings location at 4321 Dunbar Street, Toña has quickly become a warm, community-focused gathering place, celebrated for its seasonal pastries, house-made chocolate, and inviting atmosphere.

TOÑA BAKERY AND CAFÉ:

Dunbar’s Sweet New Gem

When Toña Bakery and Café opened its doors on Dunbar Street last December, it began a dream that owner and pastry chef Venezuelan-born Daniel Muñoz had envisioned for years. After training in French pastry at Toronto’s George Brown College, Daniel moved to Vancouver to join the team at Beta5 Chocolates. He later honed his skills at Nemesis, Hawksworth, and Viva Cafe & Bakery. Daniel also worked alongside Chef Kenta at Boulevard Kitchen and with acclaimed chocolatier Thomas Haas, whom he regards as one of his mentors.

From the moment Daniel began his pastry school training, he discovered a passion for pastry and chocolate, and set his sights on opening his own business.

Toña (pronounced “Tonya”) pays homage to Daniel’s heritage and family. It’s the affectionate nickname for Antonieta, his mother’s middle name. The ñ reflects the Spanish roots passed down by his father.

The cozy café is housed in the former location of Sweet Somethings bakery. The vibrant colours they chose were intended to create a warm and inviting space from the moment customers walk through the door.

“We’ve created a playful space that welcomes families,” says Daniel.

Cosette Bote, the café’s front-of-house manager and Daniel’s life partner, adds, “The space didn’t require major renovations; we mainly focused on details like new flooring, counters, shelving, and a communal table we built ourselves. The only thing we did not build was the platform seating, which A1 Studio created.”

Toña is truly a family affair. Daniel leads the kitchen, bringing pastries shaped by his training and creative vision to life. Supporting Daniel and Cosette are Daniel’s sister, Andrea Muñoz; his mother, Maria Gil; his father, Luis Muñoz; and his cousin Luciana Muñoz.

Cosette ensures customers receive exceptional service while overseeing the beverage program. Luis helps with back-of-house production, while Andrea assists in both front-of-house and branding. Daniel's mother is responsible for the gorgeous flowers outside the bakery, the interior plants, and all the little details that make Toña special. Luciana completes the team with her role in the front-of-house.

Cosette remarks, “We truly could not have made any of this happen without Daniel’s family’s immense support and work.”

She adds, “Especially on our lowest days, they have been there to give us the push we need. Doing this with them has been gratifying, and they make this place that much more special.”

"We’ve been pleasantly surprised by the community’s warm welcome," says Daniel. "We strive to create personal connections with every customer, whether it’s their first visit or their tenth. It’s about making people feel cared for in a relaxed atmosphere.”

Daniel and his team are committed to using only seasonal products.

He says, “We love to work with local farmers, and in the summer months, we look forward to using seasonal fruit. Aside from our seasonal Danishes, the summer months are when we will offer ice cream bars made in-house using local and fresh ingredients.”

The display cases feature tempting laminated pastries and Viennoiserie like buttery croissants, pain au chocolat, Kouign-amann (caramelized croissant dough folded with butter and sugar), pain Suisse (croissant dough filled with pastry cream and chocolate chips), as well as Latin American inspired pastries such as a concha (Mexican sweet buns), and cachito (Venezuelan ham filled buns). In addition, Toña serves specialty coffee roasted by local roasters.

Weekend specials include savoury mushroom Danishes and rotating desserts like rhubarbalmond tarts, Basque cheesecake, and ParisBrest.

Among the café’s most popular menu items are the Kouign-amann, cachito, canelés, and their signature prosciutto and Gruyere croissant — their take on a ham and cheese croissant with bechamel, cheddar, Gruyere and slices of prosciutto.

All chocolates, confections, pastries, and desserts are made in-house. Chocolate is available seasonally for special holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Christmas. The bakery also makes confections from September through May.

"We’re so thankful for how the community has embraced us," says Daniel. “It makes our

day when someone walks through the door because a friend recommended Toña. Dunbar is exactly the community that we hoped for.”

“We love the connections we’ve made,” adds Cosette. “It’s heart-warming to see families and their children request a trip to the ‘orange café!’” Daniel adds, “We want every guest to leave feeling cared for, happy, satisfied and eager to return.”

Dunbar Nails & Lashes is located in the heart of Dunbar Village. This bright and elegant salon has quickly become a destination for locals seeking high-quality beauty services.

Owner Anna Le’s journey to salon ownership began in Vietnam, where she pursued professional training in nails and eyelash extensions. After moving to Vancouver, she furthered her skills and in August 2023, opened Dunbar Nails & Lashes.

“I am very familiar and connected with this community,” Anna shares. “My family lives nearby. I love Dunbar’s calm atmosphere—the cleanliness, the friendly people, the sense of community. When the opportunity came to open a salon, I knew this was where I wanted to be.”

Anna was deeply involved in designing her salon. The result is a clean, modern, and cozy

environment where clients can unwind and feel pampered.

“When people walk in, I want them to feel relaxed immediately.”

“The design is simple but warm, and everything is kept very clean. That’s something our customers really appreciate and often compliment us on.”

The salon features five nail stations and one eyelash extension bed. Services range from classic manicures and pedicures to more advanced treatments like nail extensions, natural-looking eyelash extensions, waxing, and specialized nail care. Whether clients are preparing for a special event or are simply treating themselves, they can expect excellent service delivered with a smile.

“Our most popular services are lash extensions and nail extensions.”

“Manicures and pedicures are always in high demand, especially during the summer and the holiday season, especially around Christmas.”

Beyond its range of services, Dunbar Nails & Lashes stands out for its genuine hospitality. The salon’s four full-time staff members are not only highly skilled but also trained to deliver warm, attentive service. Guests are welcomed with complimentary Vietnamese coffee, tea, or bottled water—a thoughtful touch that elevates the entire experience.

“We always prioritize friendliness, politeness, and professionalism,” Anna remarks. “It’s important to me that every client feels welcome and cared for. I believe that’s why many people come back; they trust us and feel comfortable here.”

“Knowing that I’ve helped them feel more confident is the best part of this job. And when they come back regularly, it shows they trust us. That means everything.”

Anna plays a dual role as manager and technician, providing nail and eyelash services to the salon’s loyal clients. She takes great pride in the relationships she has built and the joy she sees when customers leave feeling more confident and beautiful.

“The greatest reward is seeing someone smile after their treatment.”

Dunbar Nails & Lashes primarily serves residents from Dunbar and nearby neighbourhoods, but word of mouth has begun to draw clients from further afield. While the salon prioritizes appointments, Anna and her team try to accommodate walk-ins whenever possible.

The salon is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., making it easy for clients to find time in their busy schedules.

Anna takes pride in giving back. “Being part of the community is very important to me,” she says. “It’s not just about running a business, it’s also about contributing and supporting local activities.”

Dunbar Little League: 50 Years

Little League Baseball began in the U.S. in the late 1930s and arrived in Canada at Little Mountain in 1951. Dunbar Little League followed in 1958, becoming the third league in Vancouver’s District 1 after Arbutus Ridge.

A group of community-minded men—Joff Joyce, Ralph White, George Fisher, Con Conlin, Ralph Stong, and Dan Poitevin—organized and chartered the league.

By 1960, Dunbar had five teams: Dunbar Lumber, Neville’s, Town & Country, Fisher’s Drugs, and Stong’s—still a sponsor today. Early games were limited, with no weekend matches, and fields were bare dirt with no fencing, batting cage, or concession. One long set of wooden stands along first base seated up to 600 spectators.

Hosting a district tournament required weeks of work, including sifting and rolling the dirt to prepare the field.

Dunbar Little League welcomed back the 1975 Provincial Champions on April 10, 2025, at the 2025 opening ceremony to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of this memorable achievement.

A minor “Farm League” began in 1960, and over the years divisions for younger players were added, along with proper diamonds and backstops.

Currie Field—the Majors diamond—has seen major upgrades: grass turf, an outfield fence, batting cage, scorekeeper’s booth, improved stands, and a concession stand. Many of these came when Dunbar hosted the B.C. Provincials in 1998.

Dunbar has participated in 49 district tournaments, winning 30. It has been a Provincial finalist three times, winning in 1975 and 1992, and also claimed one 9–10 Provincial title. While a Dunbar team has never made it to the Little League World Series, umpire Len Brown has officiated there.

Dunbar Little League continues to thrive, fuelled by the enthusiasm of its players, the dedication of volunteers, and the support of the community.
