H ow has the payment gateway industry changed over the last year?

More and more ISOs are branding and selling their own payment gateway service rather than reselling someone else’s branded payment gateway. Also, non-traditional companies such as VARs, CRMs, SaaS companies, and web developers are seeing the value of providing payment gateway services as part of their solution and are entering the payments industry.

There’s also a slew of new payment methods and disruptive technologies, like ApplePay and EMV, being deployed into the marketplace, requiring payment gateway providers to adapt and support them quickly.

What trends do you see coming in the next year?

The rollout of EMV is going to be a bumpy and very disruptive journey. Challenges with new EMV-compliant equipment rollouts combined with merchant readiness, as well as EMV card issuance to consumers, will take time to work out. Fraud trends will shift online as fraudsters adapt to the increased security provided by EMV. We will also see new types of fraud trends and security threats such as transaction laundering.

What are the biggest challenges NMI is currently facing?

There’s a tendency to group all payment gateways together, and NMI simply doesn’t belong in a category with traditional payment gateway providers.

We are more than just a gateway. We’re a payments enablement platform, and being able to separate ourselves from other, more vanilla, gateway providers is our main challenge as a company right now. Being relegated to “just a gateway” devalues the capabilities we offer our partners when they use our Payments Enablement Technology.

What plans do you have to meet those challenges head on?

What is a Payment Gateway?

A payment gateway provides merchants and their customers with a variety of payment acceptance options and authorizes credit card or ACH transactions. It can be integrated with one or more card processors and one or more ODFIs (for ACH). Some merchants also use a payment gateway to direct payments to different processors based on the transaction type.

Although online and offline are converging, the payment gateways supporting online and POS are still relatively separate, says Marc Abbey, Managing Partner for First Annapolis Consulting. “A payment gateway that supports online and offline is still pretty rare and legacy gateways are not effective in delivering omnicommerce integration,” he says. “Payment gateways are now investing in an omnichannel strategy and are updating their platforms to address the needs of merchants to offer mobile commerce.”

Growth of the Hybrid Model

Another driver of activity in the payment gateway space is the desire of merchants to outsource more payment capabilities in order to focus on core competencies, says Johnson.

As a result, Mercator is seeing increased interest in hybrid payment gateway deployments. In this model, the payment gateway hosts only the payment forms and handles the PCIcompliant pay page while the merchant retains control over the checkout and payment pages.

When evaluating the omnichannel capabilities of a payment gateway, “the devil is in the details,” adds Abbey.

In addition to normal due diligence to select a thirdparty vendor, it’s critical to scrutinize functionality since payment gateways may differ significantly in capabilities, the processors they work with, currencies and international transactions supported, and payment types.

“Retailers are interested in shifting data security and regulatory compliance risks to a service provider and freeing up resources,” adds Johnson.

Another advantage of the hybrid model is that consumers are never directed to a third-party site to complete the transaction, lessening the chance of shopping cart abandonment from customers switching from one device type to another during the shopping process, explains Johnson.

“Payment gateways are increasingly offering capabilities designed to streamline processes and remove friction so customers will complete the transaction,” he says. Payment pages must be optimized not just for mobile but also for smart phones, tables, tablet-laptop hybrids, and all their variations.

“Payment gateways are not all the same,” notes Alex Johnson, Senior Analyst, Credit Advisory Service for Mercator Advisory Group.

Hybrid payment gateways differ from a licensed model in which merchants license the gateway and run it on their own payments systems, giving them the ability to completely customize the look and feel of the payment pages. In a hosted model, the gateway provider hosts the payment on the provider’s servers. Although the hosted model doesn’t allow for the customization inherent in the licensed model, it does relieve the merchant of the obligation to maintain a PCI-compliant environment since that task falls to the payment gateway provider.

How does a Payment Gateway work?

A gateway is the portal to your transaction authorization. It is piece in the transaction that actually takes the transaction information (name, card number, expiration…) and formats this information in way where it securely sends it to the platform which will then send back an authorization or decline. The gateway is also responsible for storing the transaction history, tokenizing the transactions, settling the transactions [batch controls] and having the proper transaction data to report on transaction history. It is up to the gateway to be properly PCI certified to store all this data and to be properly certified to the platforms and industries to authorization transactions correctly.

with the platform(s) it works with. Just like for eCommerce and MOTO a gateway needs to be certified with a platform for every “industry” including retail [card present]. Some gateways are certified and have either mobile applications, desktop applications or swipe functionality built into the gateway’s online interface to accept retail swipes while others only do eCommerce and CNP transactions.

How does a Payment Gateway help a business manage PCI compliance?

Every payment gateway has to be Level 1 PCI compliant in order to properly process and store transactions. For merchants there are different levels of PCI which they can fall into (usually Level 3 or 4). Most gateways will provide features like tokenization, gateway hosted payment forms and secure API kits which will allow the merchant to accept payment the way they need/want to from their customer while staying out of “scope” for PCI compliance. If a merchant falls into “scope” then they may become responsible for a higher level of PCI compliance and may need to go through a more rigorous, difficult and expensive audit for compliance. The gateway’s solutions help the merchant stay out of that level.

Demand for Value-Added Options

Mike Lavoie, Vice President of Core Acquiring for Chase Commerce Solutions, explains that innovation in the payment gateway space being driven by merchants value-added services such as fraud prevention and detection and business intelligence.

For ISOs and agents, value-added innovations in payment gateways can be a danger to their business. “New players in the payment gateway space can disintermediate ISOs and agents,” explains Lavoie. “The ISO and agent need to really understand the merchant’s business and offer solutions that can help the merchant grow.”

Lavoie notes that with the EMV liability shift on October 1, more fraud will move to card not present transactions, making a robust fraud solution even more imperative for merchants with an online payment component.

This is about more than offering free devices, adds Lavoie. “ISOs and agents can differentiate themselves by their relationships with payment gateways that can bring value-added services to merchants in a meaningful way.”

To meet merchant demand, payment gateway providers like Chase Paymentech are offering advanced fraud detection tools including 3D secure, device fingerprinting, velocity checks, consortium data, and proxy piercing.

Pace of Change to Continue The growth of Omni channel commerce will continue to drive changes to the payment gateway marketplace. “With the explosion of ecommerce, payment gateways are poised for continued growth,” says Johnson.

Says Johnson, “For larger merchants with high volumes, the ability of payment gateways to add on fraud management is a big deal.” Johnson notes that some payment gateway providers provide proprietary fraud solutions while others white label tools from third-party fraud management providers.

Bottom line is that innovation in payment gateways is a win for merchants, says Lavoie. “Merchants can use a single provider to make payments integration very easy. The merchant has a single relationship that facilities the payment transaction between themselves and the consumer.”

When it comes to cross-border e-commerce, there is a big checklist; languages, currencies, payment methods, regulations, and compliance, to name a few. But this shouldn’t deter ISOs and their merchants from expanding internationally. On the contrary, there are greater opportunities in cross-border e-commerce than in the domestic market.
