THE HEALTH CORNER

with Mischa Christie

VIRTUAL FITNESS:The WayForward for Your Health Hello everybody! We’re back again with another Health Corner article from me, your favourite Health Coach and Pharmacist, Mischa Christie. Are you one of those people who is constantly busy and finding it hard to make time for getting a little more fit so you can lose those extra inches? If so, you’re not alone – but fortunately, there is a solution. Virtual fitness lets you get your workout in without having to leave the comfort of your own home. In this article I’m going to share more about this exciting new trend in health and fitness, so keep reading! Virtual fitness is a new and innovative way to work out that uses cutting-edge technology to create an immersive and interactive experience. There are a number of different virtual fitness platforms available, each of which offers a unique workout experience. Some of the most popular virtual fitness platforms include Zwift, Peloton, and Strava. Virtual fitness works by using sensors to track your movement and activity level in real-time.

This data is then used to provide feedback and guidance during your workout. For example, if you are cycling on a virtual platform like Zwift, you will be able to see your avatar pedalling alongside other users in the virtual world. Virtual fitness is an ideal way to stay motivated and committed to your workout routine, as it provides a fun and social way to exercise. Although fitness trackers and apps are now all about, the idea of Virtual Fitness is not new. In fact, the earliest examples date back to the late 19th century. One of the first was a device called the Pedometer, which was worn on the belt and measured how many steps a person took in a day. The Pedometer was followed by other devices that measured things like heart rate and respiration. These early fitness tracking devices were mostly used by athletes and scientists to track their physical activity and improve their performance. It wasn't until the 1970s that fitness tracking devices began to become more mainstream. The first popular consumer device was the Polar Heart Rate Monitor, which was developed in 1977.

As the world becomes increasingly digitized, it's no surprise that virtual fitness is on the rise. Virtual fitness is a great way to work out without having to leave the comfort of your home. There are a number of advantages to virtual fitness, including convenience, cost-effectiveness, and a wide range of options. Perhaps the most glaring benefit of virtual fitness is convenience. With virtual fitness, you can workout anytime, anywhere. All you need is an internet connection and a device such as a laptop, smartphone, or tablet. This makes virtual fitness ideal for busy people who don't have time to make it to the gym. In addition to being convenient, virtual fitness is also costeffective. Rather than paying for a gym membership, you can sign up for a virtual fitness program that fits your budget. And finally, virtual fitness provides a wide range of options. Whether you're interested in yoga, pilates, or HIIT workouts, you can find a program that meets your needs. So if you're looking for a workout that's convenient, cost-effective, and tailored to your preferences, virtual fitness is the way to go. The popularity of virtual fitness has grown exponentially in recent years, as more and more people look for ways to fit exercise into their busy schedules. Virtual fitness provides a convenient and affordable way to work out, without having to commute to a gym or studio. In addition, many virtual fitness programs offer a wide variety of workout options, so users can find a routine that fits their needs and interests.

However, virtual fitness also has some drawbacks. First, it can be difficult to stay motivated when working out alone. Second, some people prefer the social atmosphere of a group class. And finally, without the guidance of a certified instructor, it is easy to make mistakes that could lead to injury. Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to try virtual fitness is a personal one. For some people, it may be the perfect solution. Others may find that they prefer more traditional methods of exercise. Tips to get started on virtual fitness With gyms across the country temporarily closed due to the pandemic, many people are looking for ways to stay active at home. Fortunately, there are plenty of options for virtual fitness, from streaming workout classes to one-on-one personal training sessions. Here are a few tips on how to get started with virtual fitness:

1. First, take some time to explore the various options available. There are many different platforms and providers out there, so it's worth doing some research to find the right fit for you. Once you've found a few possibilities, check out customer reviews to get a sense of each option's quality and value. 2. Next, set some goals for your virtual fitness journey. Whether you're looking to lose weight, gain muscle, or simply improve your overall fitness level, having specific goals will help you stay motivated and on track. Once you've decided what you want to accomplish, look for programs or trainers that can help you reach those goals. 3. Finally, don't forget to have fun! Exercise should be enjoyable, so make sure to choose an activity that you actually enjoy doing. And don't be afraid to experiment - with so many options available, there's bound to be something out there that you'll love

Strategies for Virtual Fitness Maintaining a fitness routine can be challenging even under the best of circumstances. When you're trying to stick to a workout plan from home, it can be easy to let excuses get in the way. However, there are a few simple strategies you can use to stay on track with your virtual fitness routine. Top Virtual Fitness Platforms It seems like there's a new virtual fitness platform popping up every day. With so many options to choose from, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. Here are one of the top virtual fitness platforms, each with its own unique features and offerings. 1. Peloton is probably the most well-known virtual fitness platform. It offers a variety of classes, from cycling and running to strength training and yoga. One of the best things about Peloton is that you can compete against other users in real-time, adding an element of friendly competition to your workout. 2. If you're looking for a more immersive experience, Black Box VR might be for you. This platform uses cutting-edge VR technology to transport you to exotic locations as you workout. For example, you could find yourself running through a beautiful forest or climbing a towering mountain. Black Box VR also offers a variety of classes, so there's something for everyone. 3. Looking for something a little more low-key? Fitbit Coach is a great option. This platform offers a wide range of workouts, from simple bodyweight exercises to more intense cardio and strength-training routines. You can also customize your workouts to target specific goals, like losing weight.

1. First, make sure to schedule your workouts into your day just as you would any other appointment. This will help you to avoid getting sidetracked by other commitments. 2. Second, set realistic goals for yourself and track your progress over time. This will help you to see the results of your efforts and stay motivated. 3. Finally, don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. There are many online resources and community groups that can provide support and accountability. By following these tips, you can overcome any obstacle and stick with your virtual fitness routine. Recent research has shown that virtual fitness can have a number of benefits for health. For example, one study found that people who participated in a virtual reality workout burned more calories than those who did not. Other research has shown that virtual fitness can improve balance and coordination, and increase heart rate and blood pressure. Additionally, virtual fitness can reduce stress and anxiety, and improve mood. Overall, the research shows that virtual fitness can be a valuable tool for improving health and well-being.

Pros of Virtual Fitness There are many reasons why virtual fitness is so popular. First, it's convenient. You can workout at home, on your lunch break, or even while traveling. Second, there are often more options available online than in person. You can try a variety of workouts and find the ones that suit your goals and interests. Finally, virtual workouts can be more personal than group classes. With one-on-one coaching or personalized programs, you can get the attention and support you need to reach your fitness goals. The pandemic may have been the catalyst for the rise of virtual fitness, but it's clear that this trend is here to stay. So whatever your fitness goals may be, don't be afraid to give virtual workouts a try. Virtual fitness has been on the rise in recent years, as more and more people look for ways to get fit that are convenient and affordable. One of the main benefits of virtual fitness is that it can be done anywhere, anytime. Whether you're at home, at work, or on vacation, you can always find time to squeeze in a workout. And since there's no need for equipment or a gym membership, virtual fitness is a great option for those on a budget. Another advantage of virtual fitness is that it's often more fun than traditional workouts. With interactive games and social features, many people find that they stick with their program longer when they're working out virtually. And of course, the heart health benefits of exercise are welldocumented. So if you're looking for a way to get fit that's fun, convenient, and good for your heart, virtual fitness is definitely worth considering.

Myths of Virtual Fitness With so many Americans now working from home, there has been a surge in the popularity of virtual fitness classes. While these classes can be a great way to stay active, there are some myths that need to be dispelled. First, just because you're not in a physical studio doesn't mean the workout will be easy. In fact, many virtual classes are just as challenging as inperson classes. Second, you don't need expensive equipment to participate. Many exercises can be done with just your bodyweight or household items. Finally, you don't have to be a tech expert to take part in virtual fitness classes. Most platforms are user-friendly and easy to navigate. So if you're looking for a way to get fit, don't let these myths stop you from trying out a virtual fitness class.

Now that we're all spending more time at home, many of us have turned to virtual fitness classes to stay active. And while it's great to be able to work out in our living rooms, it can be a bit of a different experience than going to a studio or gym. So we want to know, what do you think of virtual fitness? Do you prefer it to in-person classes? Or do you miss the energy and motivation that comes from working out with others? Let us at PAJE magazine know! Thank you for stopping by The Health Corner.

Authors views on Virtual Fitness I think that virtual fitness is a great way to stay healthy. It's a great way to get your heart rate up and get some exercise without having to leave your home. And, if you're like me and you live in a cold climate, it's a great way to get some exercise without having to go outside in the cold! Plus, there are so many different types of virtual fitness classes available now that there's sure to be one that's perfect for you. Whether you want to dance, lift weights, or just do some gentle yoga, there's a class for you. And, if you can't make it to a class in person, there are plenty of online options as well. So, if you're looking for a convenient, fun, and effective way to stay fit, I would definitely recommend virtual fitness! The pandemic has forced many of us to change the way we live and work, and our fitness routines are no exception. With gyms and fitness studios closed, more and more people are turning to virtual fitness options. While it's impossible to predict the future, it's clear that virtual fitness is here to stay.

The MAN behindwith the Deets Dexter Johnson Jr A dinner knife in hand pressed firmly to my throat, I was determined that this would be the end of me. Humiliated and depressed, I nursed injuries from a cork fight in prep school. Wounded in body and mind, I crawled home searching for attention and comfort, but instead I was greeted by laughs from EVERYONE.

But at the exact moment when it mattered, God sent my aunt, "If you kill yourself, You will go to hell!" The loud scream from my Auntie Suzette, was the jolt I needed back to reality. Those words drove fear into me and then quickly reminded me that a huge price was already paid for my life.

Have you any idea what it feels like to try to fit in? Being teased about your color? Being ridiculed about you weight for years? Being next to the last class pick within your friends? Disgraced, my little ego couldn’t take being everybody's point of jest so I decided to end it all.

Rescued at just the right time, Jesus as Savior became the overarching theme of my life. Last time I told you about the Beats behind the Deets, in this issue I will give you a small peak at who I am and what I do within the kingdom. Meet the man behind the Deets.

9 Junior, Biggs, Dex or Dexta are just a few of the names they often use to refer to me, Dexter E. Johnson Jr. At 6ft 2inches people tend to think I'm a mighty giant. But if you asked me to introduce myself I would say I am more of a quiet teddy bear, unless provoked. Contrary to popular belief I am an introvert, though I’m often seen as jovial and outgoing. A lover of the colours blue and green, quiet and calm, is what I am truly at the core. Despite my default deposition I always challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone, do what needs to be done and ensure I do all I can to make sure the people around me are okay. Fun loving, a joke master, a lover and not a fighter, I believe I should try to give my best in all I attempt to do. I have an undying love for music as it is the melody that synchronises all aspects of my life. I believe nothing beats hard work and I strive to be passionate about all that I do so that I create a melodic blend of masterpieces. Born in Kingston, I began my musical journey at an early age at the Portmore Missionary Preparatory. While admiring the craft and skills of a percussionist, I began to develop my drumming skills by becoming a tabletop expert. This venture led to a gold medal career in the JCDC Festival Competitions, which launched my professional career as an elite Drummer. Ardenne High School later set the stage for me to live out my passion for music and the performing arts. I became an active part of the Drama, Speech and Music Club and continued my gold medal career at the JCDC Festival Competitions. JCDC played an integral role in the development of my formative musical years by allowing me to represent my school nationally as the overall best in various performing arts categories.

10 I am a motivated and driven young man, whose youthful exuberance was never shy when it came to church. Christ is my life and church is one of my main priorities. An active member at St. John’s Road Church of God, I currently serves as the President of the Youth Fellowship and Head of the Music Department. As a Pastor's Kid, I have known the church all my life and I vow to continue declaring Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. A brightly colored illustration of Christ on the Cross in a picture bible, was my love at first sight experience. I saw pain, I saw suffering but I also saw unconditional love. Jesus Christ as Savior, is the Bible story I hold most dear to my heart. A man stretched out dead on a tree to save wrecks like me brings a comfort like none other. Through that picture I clearly understood the meaning of loving beyond measure and that has been my guiding philosophy throughout life. At age 11 at a Watch Night Service I publicly declared I belonged to Jesus Christ by taking my water baptism. Christ gave his best for me so I'll give my best to Him. I never give up an opportunity to serve God with all my heart and talents and as such I dedicate my time to the Jamaica Youth for Christ (JYFC). There I serves as the Parish Director for St. Catherine, which requires the planning and participation in multiple events gears towards the holistic development of young people. I also serves as the Director and Head of the P.A. System Department, which includes operating and managing the Rehearsal and Recording Studio of the Jamaica Youth for Christ (JYFC).

This year the JYFC celebrates 75 years of ministering in Jamaica and alot of my current time is spent in organizing and supporting the celebration events. We are currently on a mission to visit 75 churches across the island and to partner in ministry with them. We also aim to visit 75 schools across the island to distribute tablets. We will all host the International Youth For Christ (YFC) Conference here in Jamaica which will see YFC bodies from all over the world coming to Jamaica. If it's not Church or Youth for Christ then it's music. My love for music took on a different tone in 2018 when I officially registered my record label, Crosslinks Production. The name on the label is a cross reference to my love of the story of the cross and the crucifix I wear as a constant reminder of Christ's love. As a trained Audio Engineer from the Media Training Institute in Kingston, I have produced various songs under my brand. And I set my eyes on continuing a successful career in the industry. To enable my dreams I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Arts in Events Management and Production at the University of Technology, Jamaica. Added to my portfolio is Chief Operations Officer of Imperium Gospel Limited. There the beat is Artiste Management where I oversee the ministries of Gospel Ministers such as Orville Sutherland, Trevelle ClarkeWhyne, Johnmark Wiggan, Rian Davis and the Gifted Youth Ministry (a mime group of vibrant young people).

11 I am often referred to as an expertise in all areas of music. From playing professionally to mastering singles to planning, executing and hosting entertainment events and forever sees himself glorifying God and expressing himself through the musical arts. Who I am today is a product of the hardwork of my Mom and Dad. From them I learned to be a family man, to work hard and to always put God First. I am extremely grateful to both of them for all they have done for me. They took the time out to encourage me, and to forgive me when I made a mess of my life. It was my Dad who took the time out to reason with me. He taught me that the time you spent matters as even though he was always at work he made the time spent with us worthwhile. This taught me that you can do everything, just use your time wisely and make an extra effort. He often taught me to be the solution and not a part of the problem. Who I am as a leader is a replica of his leadership style and qualities. He always saw potential in me and pushed me to take on roles I wasn't sure I could manage like becoming the Secretary of our youth fellowship and then later the President. Like my parents did for me I plan to leave a strong legacy for those who follow behind me.

want to encourage the next generation to blaze the fire of Christ in all that they do. Let God leave and step out of your comfort zone as I did by becoming the host of Gospel Deets and watch how he amazes you. With God you can achieve everything. As my favorite verse 2 Chronicles 7:14 humble yourselves and fervently pray and watch God work. And of course I couldn't complete this article without saying Barcelona and Arsenal are the best football teams ever. Dexter Johnson Jr. is a Christian Creative and Entrepreneur who is well known in the Jamaican Gospel arena for his passion for the advancement of God's Kingdom through work with Youth and other ministers of the Gospel

PAJE: First things first, we saw your post on Fathers' Day with your wife and kids and instantly, we were curious: How do you balance life as a husband, father of 3, Pastor and Artiste? Sone: Firstly, my wife is a trooper. She ensures the academics and social life is intact. But as it pertains to me, I must say its sometimes tricky to ensure I am there for them and that my presence is felt in the home. A lot of times though they join me in the studio and be my “producer” so they say anyway. Haha! I make sure to show up for all their events and school happenings, I just believe it is important for me to be there and let them see physically that you are always gonna be there for them as a father. And of course being their protector and provider is one of my top priorities as a dad. However, balancing can be very hard, but with discipline and structure I’ve been able to effectively serve in all 3 areas, with God being my help.

PAJE: We realize you’re always pretty fashionable; Are you your own stylist? Sone: Haha, yes I am and thank you. Sounds like I can add that to my portfolio one day in the future. “Haha”. I always try my best to represent my home and my God well. I don’t ever want anyone to think that we are boxed in as far as our fashion sense, “style it up!” as I would normally say.

15 PAJE: How would you say things have 18 shifted for you in terms of 2022 versus 2020 in terms of your faith in God, maneuvering the industry and embracing your style of music? Sone: That’s actually a really good question! I know I’ve grown as a Christian, my faith has been further fortified going through these pandemic years. I know a lot of people had it really difficult but from a spiritual perspective for me I have seen a lot of growth, even with my artistry. I am thankful that I am able to make a mark on the world with the music I have been able to produce thus far. I certainly see where a space for the style of music I do. My gifts has been carved out and the feedback is encouraging as well. There is still a lot to attain naturally, souls to win over and people to inspire so I am looking forward to the rest that’s going to manifest and all that God has in-store.

PAJE: As a Pastor and Artiste, what are some of the ways that you’d like to see the Gospel music industry in Jamaica speak more openly about in Jamaica? Sone: I think we are making strong impacts and positioning ourselves for a great or even greater outpouring. I must say however, change and development takes time and the industry at large has been going through a period where its almost as though it is seeking after its “footing”, but I do see where it will solidify and be very impactful with the help of the Church. I think a fully committed marriage between the church and gospel music is where the mark will be made, one that the government cannot resist. Therefore, our impact on the Government will be stronger and more effective in getting the proper backing to save our Jamaica.

PAJE: Speaking of Jamaica, when will we be seeing you in Jamaica next? Sone: Likely this year, some plans are in place but nothing I can fully confirm as yet. But definitely something I’m working on.

PAJE: As someone with some solid messages for the people, we’re sure you’ve been seeing a lot going on the Jamaican society and the world at large. What message of caution and hope do you want to share with our readers? Sone: You said it correctly, hope is what I would like to promote, as I recall a line from one of my songs …”hope in Jesus and nothing less” its easy to see hopelessness in today’s version of society. In fact, among many cases you may find that it is readily available like its freely given as a general life dependent item, as soon as you open up your eyes in the morning. I know its challenging all over, I realize that many face a really grim reality, but I have been preaching Jesus since I was 12 years old, I have seen ups and downs alike and everything in between. But, I have never lost hope in Him, because even when things are not great he finds a way to keep that hope alive in our minds, shout out to Jermaine Edwards and Agent Sasco. I don’t know what I’d do or where I’d be without Jesus and the hope that he brings. At times I was broke, but I was not hopeless. God always finds a way to make things happen and provide. At times I was really disappointed because of life’s setbacks but hope was still there reminding me that the race is not for the swift. Hope is my message to everyone, “hope in Jesus and nothing less”. On Christ the solid rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand.

We went with Uganda because of the positive reggae/dancehall to culture and also because the

PAJE: Now, let's dive into some of your music! One thing we can definitely say is that your intended message of hope is always wrapped really well into some 'feel-good' music! One of the 2022 hits that we had to really dive deeper into with you is SWEET EHH! We love the vibe, the collaboration and the video! So, let's talk a bit about it.

Shepherd (God) linked me up with a good friend, Hamasanya the lead choreographer of the dance in the video. The whole thing took after once we were able to get Hamasanya on board with his team to put the finishing touches on the project.

PAJE: What makes Sweet Ehh different from the rest of your songs? Sone: Honestly, I’ve never heard this kind of fusion

Sone: To be honest DaJourney is a very creative and unique talent, he was the one who took the lead on this track and invited me on to add my spin on things. So the chorus was already set, as soon as I heard it I knew it was a banger! As far as the signature input on the song is concerned, I actually took the time to research means and

PAJE: So, we heard about the process of writing the song. Tell us about the process of PAJE: We know you love creating energetic Producing the song. songs, but we never expected the African Sone: Once more my broskii DaJourney is the man flavour to be involved. How did that link come behind the impeccable productions, by all means with about? God being his help. Sone: In the midst of creating the song we found it had a lot of the mother feel to it, so we were watching a few of the afrobeat songs and drew a little inspiration from them.

Words aren’t enough to say about his growth and creativity as a producer.

19 PAJE: Now, we can't NOT talk about the awesome, high-energy video! Tell us about the process of Shooting the video and bringing the overall project together. – Sone: This was a very creative endevour to have the guys in Uganda do their thing and putting our thing together with it was a really high bar project that resulted in me going to Canada to film and orchestrating the Uganda leg of the shoot. I’ve been blessed to be able to learn cinematography, so I was able to direct the project and complete the post production work by adding a little flair here and there. We spared no expense for the video because we knew we needed to have that African culture and energy driving it. Hamasanya and his team saw the vision and ran with it making it one of my proudest video yet. To God be the Glory! PAJE: Just in case some of our readers haven't checked it out yet, what message and vibe do you hope listeners and viewers receive when they watch and listen? – The vibe is straight youthful energy, but the message is really one of the foundational truth of the Word (Bible), knowing that God will always show up at the right time for his people is a very comforting thing. And every time when that happens its just a reminder that God “sweet ehh man” as the song itself declares. I’d also like to share with everyone a reminder of a scripture from Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. My prayer is for the message of the lyrics of the song to reach all people just about anywhere, “from ina the Church to the prison”.

20 As we spoke, we realized that we wanted to also hear from other key players in the making of this hit and its accompanying video. So, Sone G connected us quickly with Da Journey Productions and Hama San! Check out what they had to say! PAJE: Hey DaJourney! It's a true honour to connect with you after hearing so many of your productions! How did you know that THIS song was going to be a hit? DaJourney: I didn't know it would, thank God it is, I don't create songs or music really to be hits' I create music that I love from personal experiences that I know people will be able to relate to.

PAJE: Tell us what led to this collaboration between yourself and Sone G DaJourney: Energy and friendship or should I say relationship. When I got the idea for the song I know I could depend on Song G to see the vision and not to be critical.

PAJE: As the Producer on the track, what message do you personally want persons to receive when they listen to the song? DaJourney: I will always bring a message of hope and joy in my music.

While I do have songs that address various issues, my goal is not to prove that I'm better but just being a light in the dark to show God can pull you through as he did for me. I tell of the struggles after all I'm only human but I will also tell of the joy of overcoming these struggles.

PAJE: Thanks for that, DaJourney! Hey Hama San! Thanks for chatting with us real quick. Let's jump right in. Your moves are absolutely electrifying, and we couldn't help but notice you've got some Jamaican roots! Tell us a lil bit about your journey as Creative. Moves are absolutely electrifying in a way that suddenly a familiar noise appears that I have practiced and rehearsed to a million times. My body and heart taking over until i come to a halt with the end of a song.

21 All along back in the days when i was a youth and my hobby and gift was dancing and all the questions i had were how was I going to move an extra mile to benefit from my gift of dancing , and to inspire more of the African youths out there like me to reach to that point. And also to believe that in what ever they do and focus on. they can ‘SUCCEED’...

PAJE: This video was filled with complete ENERGY! What is your intended vision for those who watch the video and see the dancing? The intended vision for those who watch the video and the dances is to motivate and inspire the youths to learn and believe that they can use their gifts and talents to archive and live out their purpose and literally impact

PAJE: Thanks a lot for your time, Hama San! Alright, Sone, we're rounding things out with this feature and we've got one last question for you!

other people’s lives.

What can we expect from you for the rest of 2022?

PAJE: As the one who helped to bring even more life to the words, what do you personally hope that persons receive from the song and the video?

Sone: More great music and pushing Jesus more than ever. He said, “if I be lifted up… I will draw all people unto me”. Also too! I am happy you asked. I am actively thinking about releasing my debut album as well, keep praying, stay focused.

I’m really hoping that someone out there falls in love with the lyrics and the joy expressed in the video .and more so that the song won’t just be for vibes but rather for people worldwide to understand the call upon their lives that it becomes their culture that they’ll express, teach and invest in the coming generation.

Just as we were finishing our convo, Sone gave us a lil hint that he's got another hot track being released in early August! We're not gonna say anything else, just remember to watch that space!

Thank You!

It was truly a pleasure catching up with you, Sone! Blessings upon blessings for the steps ahead and we'll definitely be in touch!

MEET Nicholet Brown-Lee I have seen the lives of people transformed as I minister to them, lives being rearranged as they come in contact with the risen Lord through my Surrender.

PAJE: Wow, what a pleasure to be able to connect with you! We've been taking note of your recent steps in the industry and we look forward to you sharing more of who you are with our readers so that our readers can learn more about who you are. Let's get started, shall we?

First and foremost, we'd love to hear your heart behind this ministry! Nicholet: Nicholet Brown-Lee Ministries caters to the holistic man. She believes that if a man is hungry feed him and if he needs healing , we should pray for him. She delivers the good news that Jesus cares and forgives us no matter how far we have gone. The message she seeks to convey is that the grace of God is sufficient to keep us. All He wants us to do is to take Him to the place where we felt we have lost the race. The ministry involved ministering through songs, preaching the word and motivating others through podcasts and so on.

25 The journey has been filled with several rewarding moments. I have seen the lives of people transformed as I minister to them, lives being rearranged as they come in contact with the risen Lord through my Surrender. Of course, there has been challenges as with any great work. There are times when I feel like giving up as would any human being but the reason I am standing is always bigger than the problems I face.

PAJE: Wow, that was such a great breakdown of not only the heart behind the ministry, but really, what listeners and your overall community members can expect from you as they journey with you.

PAJE: So, we're curious, since youu've been journeying as a Minister, we're sure you've had some moments or aspects that have truly inspired or moved you. Care to share any? Nicholet: [This] is when souls testify that my ministry impacted them in such a way that they surrendered their lives to Christ. This for me is rewarding for the Kingdom of God because if I should gain any praise, let it all go to Calvary. As long as God is glorified out of my gifts, I am happy. I desire for the world to see Jesus in me, in other words, if they are looking for Jesus, let Him be seen in me. Sometimes, the only Jesus they will know is us reflecting who He is in or walk, talk and daily living. I am very concerned about those who are not yet saved, the last days are upon us and I do wish that people

I cannot pretend because I cannot give what I do not have. God had given much to me so much is required of me. My first song Total Surrender was released in 2018 and I recently released the song Glory Rain-Reign on January 1, 2022. To date, I am working on the next single 'The Place I Used to Be'. I am also currently writing a book to be released soon.

PAJE: Wow, Nicholet, our chat was a quick one but boy, was it power-packed! Thank you for sharing your heart with us and our readers! Before we go, do you have anything else that you'd like to share for our readers? People pleasers do not birth Big dreams or carry great vision. Dreams are birthed in the fire of criticism, through the pressure of naysayers and through you standing on the word of God that brought you in the race, in the first place. Whatever it is that God called you to do, do it with all your might, impact ,because you will never receive that crown until you are willing to carry the cross. Go forth and do it, God is with you.

HEART MATTERS

Discouraged but notDefeated Christians may at times seem like walking affirmations and bible quotes but believe it or not, there will be days when discouragement will come. The Lord knows our heart will face discouragement and as such the bible is flooded with scripture to remind us that though we may be discouraged at times, we don’t have to be defeated by it. A famous scripture often used that is even a song in Jamaica is Psalm 61, verse 2 says, “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” When we get discouraged, it’s important to remember that we can cry out to God and that He is bigger, greater and higher than anything we may face. Life can be hard and this world can be discouraging but even in overwhelming times, we can thrive and rise above it all. You can survive this heart matter and get your heart in that place of joy again. Don’t give up!

with Candicia Ashman

These have been helpful to me in my times of 18 discouragement:

3 keys to overcome discouragement as a believer: 1. Meditate It may not be on a yoga mat in the Himalayas, but meditation despite popular belief is not as worldly as the church makes it. If anything, the world has taken this sacred practice from the church and made it carnal. The Bible speaks a lot on meditation, specifically, on the word of God. Sometimes we read the bible and word goes through us, and at other times, the world goes within, it is stored until we need it and it is from that reservoir that we are able to withdraw when we are in dyer need of some motivation, guidance and encouragement. ‘Meditate’ in this sense means to think activity upon,’ making the word come alive in your heart. When you feeldiscouraged meditate on the word of God.

What does God word say about this situation? What in the word opposes this word I am hearing now?

2. Affirm Now that you have thought actively upon the word of God, now it is time to speak the word back into your life and atmosphere.

The words on the pages arepowerless until it is spoken. Use the word to affirm yourself and bring a reminder as to what God says about this situation. This is a prophetic action; begin to speak things and changes into being that you would like to see. Job 22:28 “Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.” Write down your daily affirmations and read them aloud. You control how your emotions are impacted as your day goes on and not the other way around. When discouragement knocks on your door, let it meet up on the full wrath and truth of God’s word. In the end, it is what God says that matters.

3. Associate Proverbs 22:24-25 (NCV) “ Don’t make friends with quick tempered people or spend time with those who have bad tempers. If you do, you will be like them. Then you will be in real danger.”

31 18

In times of joy or despair, your circle does matter. Who you associate with can either row your boat or drill holes in them on your journey of wholesomeness. Its good practice when you are feeling discouraged not to wallow too much in it, a change of environment and association with close friends and family can help you get in a better head space. However, choose who you are associated with in those vulnerable moments wisely. Don’t join pity parties that make you feel worse off than you entered. There are people who are energy givers and energy takers and in your lowest times, you need someone who will refuel and help refocus you. In conclusion, life happens, and that’s ok! Being a Christian doesn’t mean you will be a walking ray of sunshine 24/7 and it doesn’t mean you won’t have problems to deal with. Face those days head on and keep pressing. Discouragement will come as with any heart challenge, but you don’t have to stay in the funk. You don’t have to be defeated. Your heart matters. THE BECOMING MAN 19

COLUMN

with Jonoi Bowen

CAN MEN BE REACHED?

Let’s face it we all know that the ratio of male to female in churches is alarming, and it has given rise to many persons thinking and even saying that perhaps men are unreachable. I remember analyzing this situation a couple years ago not from the perspective of what I was seeing but from the perspective of what God would want me to see, this began to open my eyes up to the reality of the situation and also the reality that God can give us the tools to see this ratio return to equilibrium.

I was in discussion with a friend of mine this past week about this very same situation, she expressed to me that she believed that some churches are not doing enough to reach men to which I firmly agreed. To add to that not only is it my opinion that churches could be doing more to reach men but I also believe that the church has to do more to reach men.

18

Let's look firstly at how men can be reached, we first have to establish that all men were created equal by God and that the only separating factor of men in the world from the Christian man is Jesus, understanding that this is important to every man (saved and unsaved), all men want to be respected and treated equally as any other man despite his race, education, or socio-economic background. We have to be unbiased in our wholistic life perspective as witnesses. The next thing is to identify more common ground. All men laugh, cry (yes cry) watch sports (most of us), get sad, have dreams and have the responsibility to bear the weight of leading society. We have to remember the commonalities between us and our unsaved brothers and from this knowledge comes conversational starting points and the building blocks for creating effective social evangelistic programs that can effectively ministers to the needs and aspirations of our brothers.

The truth is that unbelievers can spot ingenuine attempts at evangelism which can be based on misguided efforts birthed from church expansionism pursuit rather than a genuine desire to reach lives for Jesus, to really have an impact we have to know how to skillfully be involved and lead our communities forming a genuine connection with our brothers through things common such as regular community walks, sports ministry, personal development seminars and other community developmental initiatives. We have to be seen and heard not only when it is during a crusade, but we should have a consistent push to reach our brothers on every football field and corner shop in our communities. The church has to demonstrate the light to the men of our nations by our words and actions, without Christ-like actions our words are similar to that of a politician. ARE YOU BEING A

OF YOUR BLESSINGS? A few months ago, I was straightening up my work area at

One of the things that the ‘culture of the world” focuses a

alwaysmoving towards the next goal.

To clarify specifically the blessings that we have received in

And while there is nothing completely wrong with this.

the current seasons that we are in but we are unable to see because we are so focused on our next seasons or better yet

This point of view is not necessarily one to live by as the

the “blessings of next season”.

Christian journey should not only be about jumping from one achievement to the next thing, “the better thing”, but

The truth is we tend to spend so much time caught up on our

instead it should be focused on being intentional in how

future and the goals we are working towards that we end up

we live and stewarding the blessings that we’ve received

overlooking or missing out on the things that we already have,

from God in whatever season we may be in.

the things that we’ve already been blessed with.

Take for example you just bought your first car, but it wasn’t your dream car so instead of seeing it as the blessing that it is, you complain about it not being big enough or fast enough and constantly speak about the “future car” that you will own. You also do little to take care of the current car and the reason for this is once you get the new car you will treat it better. However, if you paused for a moment and really think, you would realize that you are the first in your family to purchase and own a car. You would also realize that though you weren’t able to purchase your dream car, the fact that you were able to purchase a car in itself is a blessing and lastly, from a more technical standpoint, you would realize that the purchase of that car has provided you with the opportunity to get you from Point A to Point B and vice versa, hassle-free. Now let’s look at another scenario, so you haven’t bought your first house as yet and you are currently living in a rented home. Even though the property is not yours the expectation is that you are to treat it as such. If you were to think about it, do you take care of your home as you should? Or are you waiting until you are able to purchase your own home and then you will take care of it? If you are thinking of the latter then continue reading to help realign those thoughts.

It’s important to note that whatever God blesses us with belongs to Him and there is literally nothing that we do or could do to deserve it. The key thing to take from this is that our blessings are from and of God and not recognizing this fact can lead to us overlooking and mistreating the blessings we’ve received from God. A question that we should always keep at the forefront of our mind is, “Would God be pleased?”. Now, let’s look at the meaning of the word steward, “A steward is said to be someone who manages or looks after someone’s property or financial affairs.” This perfectly captures the point made earlier, when God created us, one of our primary purposesor responsibility is to be stewards of everything concerning Him. Genesis 2:15 (NIV), “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

36 So, how can we be better stewards of the blessings that God has bestowed upon us:

1. Stop Complaining When we complain it is almost like we are telling God that what he has blessed us with is either not good or not good enough for us. Especially when we’ve been praying for that specific blessing, you can reread the Bible story of the Israelites and their journey out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. It is important to note that transitioning from one season to another won’t necessarily happen overnight, it can but that is not always the case. But we ought to trust God regardless of how long it may take to move from one season to the next. Prayer is necessary for all seasons and whenever we feel like complaining I encourage you to choose prayer instead. As prayer fosters change and is a direct line of communication with God. Colossians 4:2 (NIV),” Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

2. Stop Comparing I’m sure we’ve all heard that “comparison is the thief of all joy”. When we compare it causes us to be completely out of alignment with God’s words. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV), specifically states, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

And if we were to analyze the scripture we would recognize that the scripture speaks to a singular person and not a collective group of people. So, God knows the plan He has for you. You see sometimes we push and try to jump to the next goal or the next season because of what is happening in the lives of others and so we don’t allow God to take us through that season in the time that He sees fit.

3. Give Thanks for Every Blessing It’s easy to take for granted the “little blessings” and only recognize the “big blessings”. However, it’s important to note that a blessing is simply just a blessing. When we assign the description “little” or “small” it causes us to see it as just that, little or small or insignificant. But the truth is God knows exactly what we need and when we need it. So, when we change our perspective or point of view on that we are then able to show gratitude and give thanks for everything that God blesses us with. Whether it be rain on a hot day, a smile, a word of encouragement/prayer, money from a friend to buy lunch, a car, a home, a spouse, child/children, a promotion, acceptance into a school or faculty of choice, spiritual breakthroughs, or financial breakthroughs, good health. You get the gist. The key to this is practicing giving thanks to God for every blessing and it is as easy as “Lord, I thank you for waking me up this morning”. 1 Chronicles 16:34 (NIV), “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”

4. Recognizing That all Things (Blessings) are from God In recent times there has been a lot of focus on “I did this” or “I deserve this” but the reality is there is nothing that we achieve in and of ourselves but through Christ and His power that worketh in us we are able to do or achieve things according to His plans for our lives. We are nothing without Christ, and there is nothing that we do or can do to deserve God’s blessings. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), but only through grace, God’s grace have we been made free. When we recognize this, we also recognize why it is important to be better stewards of the blessings from God. The blessings, we receive belong completely to God and we should treat them as such. Psalm 24:1 (KJV), “The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein”. It is important to note that blessings aren’t only limited to material blessings but look at your child/children, your spouse, your marriage, your ministry, and your time. Food for thought, are you being good stewards of the blessings you have been entrusted with?

5. Be Faithful with the “Little Things” We can look back at the scenarios from earlier with the car and house, and yes it may not be the dream car or your own home but does that mean that you shouldn’t take care of it or make it feel like a home? Think about it. What is the guarantee that you will be able to take care of the dream car or house when the season changes?

Be faithful with the “little things” the things that we may consider insignificant but they may be the things that are delaying your transition into the next season. Luke 16:10 (NIV), “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” You can read the Parable of the talents for some more insight (Matthew 25:14-30).

6. Utilize our Blessings to Help Others Last but definitely not least, we should utilize our blessings to help others. A lot of times God blesses us so that we too can bless someone else. So, while the blessing may have been bestowed upon us, specifically related to finances, sharing opportunities, talents or skills that we may have, knowledge, etc. we should not only focus on ourselves but we should think of ways we can use these blessings to help or serve others. As Christians, we are called to love and be kind to one another (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). We should also bear each other’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). A lot of times we only focus on doing the “big things” when it comes to blessing others but there should literally be no limits. Blessing someone can look different based on the blessing that they need in that appointed time.

It’s always important to note that there are many ways to help/bless others and we should do this with a willing heart. When we remember that everything is from God and we are His stewards then this comes easy. And even as God has blessed us before He is more than able to bless us again. Even as I am writing I’ve realized that I too have been guilty of not stewarding the blessings of God but through practice and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I will become a better steward. I also hope that as you read this article change will be incited and you too will become better stewards of God’s blessings. On a separate note while you’re going through your different seasons allow God to move you. It doesn’t have to be a race to achieve everything, as God already has the blueprint for our lives and if we realize that our reasoning for these achievements is primarily worldly, it may be time to set back and reevaluate ourselves and shift our perspective so that we can be in alignment with what God wants for us. As it’s only when we see ourselves as stewards of God’s blessings then we will find and be contented in our lives and the season we are in. God’s blessings are good and should not be taken lightly, they also should not be seen as voids fillers until the next blessing. Lastly, I do hope the rest of the year will bring you peace, joy, good health, and lots of blessings. I also pray that you will experience with God on a next level. Many blessings, My Christian Sisters

THE STORY OF LOIS BORTHWICK

COLUMN

with Akeel Henry

Renewal is one of the great promises that the gospel message offers. It matters little who you were before you met Jesus; when you do, you will become new. Life in Christ may not necessarily be a “do-over”, but it’s a fresh start according to 1st Corinthians chapter 5 verse 17.

This promise not only liberates us from the accusations of the enemy but also gives us hope to press forward in faith. This is true even for persons who have previously enjoyed success in this life. Persons who considered themselves as being “good”. Who Tried their best to follow the rules and do what made their overseers (parents, teachers, church leaders or bosses) happy. Our guest for this edition of Living ‘N’ Tellingknows a thing or two about this and it is my pleasure to share her story with you. Her name is Lois Bothwick, formerly Lois Clouse. She was born and raised on a small crop farm in New Riegel, Ohio – a small town in northwest Ohio in the USA. She was raised in a large nuclear family where she was the 6th born of nine (9) children. Lois described her early years as being very playful, humble, religious, and broken. “Overall, my earliest years were fairly happy just being a kid, playing with my siblings.

I loved school, loved the routine, and loved to learn new things. My life revolved around my family, my school, and our church. My Dad worked hard for us, but he had a drinking problem and later we realized was bipolar. He at times was very mean and abusive to my mom and us kids so that left me with a lot of hurts, insecurities and fears which have taken me years to heal from”

Lois was a high achiever at school. Going to school was sort of her “sweet spot”. It was the place where she found most serenity as there was brokenness in her home resulting from her father’s chronic drinking problem and bipolar depression. After completing High school, Lois pursued tertiary studies at Ohio State University where she studied foreign languages. She was desirous of joining the Peace Corps or Catholic missions so she could help people in foreign nations. However, what she encountered was far greater and more fulfilling than any other plan she had for her life. In her freshmen year in college, Lois accepted Jesus as her personal Savior and Lord. She was led to faith by a staff member with Campus Crusade for Christ. “I became a believer in Spring 1986 as a freshman in college – I grew up going to church and it was an integral part of my family life, but somehow missed the message of the true gospel. What was presented was more about me being a good person and following all the rules. Jesus + my works and good deeds would save. I had no assurance that if I died that I would go to heaven and feared doing bad things because God might send me to hell.”

Her decision to accept Christ, however, wasn't without its hesitations. She was raised in a Catholic background. Hence, she believed she was already a Christian and admitted that it did require someone from a similar background to help her to come to accept the gospel message. “I had a definite spiritual interest and when I went to college at the Ohio State University, I communicated some interest in a Bible study. The first person who came and talked to me was very nice but because she wasn’t from the same church background as me, I politely declined. The second person who came and talked to me was raised in a Catholic background and I was willing to listen to and trust her. She used a booklet called “Have you Heard of the Four Spiritual Laws?”. That was the first time the gospel was presented to me and began to make some sense. The studies emphasized that it is not our works that save us, but it is Jesus’ work on the cross and I needed to put my trust in Him and not my religious experience. I told her that I thought I was already a Christian but as we began to meet to study the Bible together, I began to realize that I had never really put my trust in Christ for the forgiveness of my sins.”

41 Thirty-six (36) years later, Lois Borthwick continues to enjoy the fruit of this decision. She is currently a Full-time worker with Bridges International, a nonprofit Christian organization that seeks to meet the needs of international students: social, service, spiritual and student leadership. She is also the wife of Kendall Borthwick and has two daughters, Kathryn, and Rebekah Borthwick. God honored Lois’ desire to meet the needs of individuals from countries around the world. He demonstrated His love by blessing her with a family whom she loves and an occupation that she greatly enjoys. Her journey with the Lord, however, has not always been smooth sailing. “The hardest part of my journey was letting go of the control and trusting God to truly lead and direct my life. Believing deep down that He loves me, has my best interest at heart. Because of my dad, I have had to overcome a lot of lies that I believed about myself, about God and about how I think this life should or should not work. I am a perfectionist at heart and have been raised by a stern father and in a stern works-based church.

God was repairing Lois’ heart piece by piece. She had to learn to be patient through the “pruning”. Lois believes that God’s goal is to give us love that we have never experienced before. “God is real, and He loves you more than you will ever know!!!!! He is good. He is kind. He is for you and not against you. He sent Jesus to die for you and He can change you from the inside out. He wants you to know Him, seek Him, and trust Him. He is so intimate. He truly has your best interest at heart and is trying to restore you to who He created you to be. Everything that He requires of us is because He is good and wants the very best for our lives. His rules and commands are not “do this or else go to hell” but “do this and live”. He wants us to have abundant life, a life overflowing with His abundant love, grace, mercy, and goodness. He is good and can be trusted”

It's like I lived my life very tight-fisted, and my journey has been God having to peel back one finger at a time. it has been quite a process to believe that it is not my works or efforts that save me but that it is truly only the immense love, grace, and mercy of Jesus Christ.”

Lois’ desire for excellence and high achievement saw her meet an excellent and remarkable God. Her desire for compassion and love from her earthly father led her to the Eternal Father, who continues to show her compassion and love. As she continues to stand in the gap for many international students across the globe. I pray that her love, desire for excellence, and compassion, will continue to meet their social and spiritual needs.

Lois believes that the greatest distance in the world is from the mind to the heart. Having literary knowledge about God’s love differs from experiencing and being transformed by it.
