It’s hard to believe another year is coming to a close. And what a year it’s been. In fact, it has been the largest year of growth in the 28-year history of Pacific Dental Services.
To name just a few highlights, we:
• Welcomed 792 new dentists
• Opened 60 new supported practices
• Established a National Clinical Council led by Carolyn Ghazal, DDS
• Joined together with thousands of team members and clinicians in April for the XP Awards at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas after more than two years apart due to the COVID-19 pandemic
• Introduced the theme: Game On! The Power of Winning Together and celebrated more than 100 XP award winners for extraordinary performance
• Celebrated our 28th birthday and 13,000+ team members during the inaugural PDS Appreciation Week in June
• Deployed Epic into our 900+ supported practices, an effort that took 2.5 years and the hard work of every single team member, clinician and support department
• Volunteered more than 72,000 hours in service to your communities
• Provided more than $11 million in donated dentistry
• Raised half a million dollars and strolled over 3,000 miles for the PDS Foundation special needs dentistry program
• Raised $721,000 for charity: water
• Performed almost 42,000 salivary diagnostic tests
• Installed 198 CBCT machines
• And so much more
It’s no surprise that with so much growth, we needed to evaluate our organizational structure to scale for the future. Last December, we announced a new structure that includes territory partners and regional partners working closely together with regional clinical partners (RCPs) to symbiotically align operational excellence and clinical excellence. In this issue of PDS Life magazine, we are proud to introduce the incredible leadership team that make up the operational engine of PDS. Additionally, on page six, Carolyn Ghazal, DDS, Chair of GP Platform Development, highlights the members of both the National Clinical Council and the RCPs who will ensure we continue to raise the standard of clinical excellence.
We have some really exciting dental-medical integration partnerships and opportunities on the horizon. We are looking forward to sharing details in the weeks to come. Additionally, we are continuing to invest in genomics including salivary and blood diagnostics and testing. As you know, oral health is moving from reactive to predictive and preventive care. It will be imperative for PDS to be at the forefront of the science and technology in this space.
In October, I had the honor of speaking at the Staumann Group DSO CEO Summit in Zurich, Switzerland and the Dentagnostics 7th Interdisciplinary Oral Medicine Conference in Cologne, Germany. Both engagements brought together the best and brightest leaders in dentistry and health care from across the globe. We are starting to look at not only how we can become the greatest health care company in America, but also advance what we have learned about the Mouth-Body Connection® internationally. It is so exciting to think that what began in one dental practice more than 28 years ago is now growing into a global movement with PDS leading the way of revolutionizing primary health care.
All of this hard work cannot happen without you. Each of you has contributed to and supported the efforts of our mission and organizational strategy. To say I am proud of the work we have accomplished together would be an understatement. I wish you all a very well-deserved, restful and happy holiday season. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you bring to your work every day. There is so much more to achieve together. Here’s to a bright year ahead in 2023!
Sincerely,
Stephen Thorne IV, Founder and CEOHave a story to share? We’d love to hear it.
PDS Life magazine is lovingly curated and produced by the PDS Communications department. We are always looking for unique, heartwarming stories that share the PDS culture inside and out of work, highlight clinical excellence, recognize our team members and clinicians, provide business or department updates, showcase our force for good initiatives and more. We would love to hear from you. Please send your ideas to PDSConnect@pacden.com.
Brace Face. Metal Mouth. Train Tracks.
Many of us have likely been on the receiving end of the occasional high school joke. And while there are many advantages to traditional braces and head gear, often involving spacers, brackets, wires, bands retainers and more, advancements in orthodontics are offering a clearer alternative.
Meet the Spark Clear Aligner System.
The clear aligner market has responded to increased demand for alternatives to teeth straightening products with improved aesthetics. In fact, Fortune Business Insights forecasts the global market to grow from $2.85 billion to $10.4 billion in 2028, an increase of 19.7%. While patient demand helped expedite the process, advancements in 3D-scanning technology, thermoforming materials and 3D printing have made it possible to offer superior products with both form and function.
In PDS fashion, we are leading the way by investing in technology and clinical offerings to support clinicians in providing the best dentistry available to their patients. We began conducting market research of the most innovative solutions and tested a limited product pilot with several leading orthodontists and GP aligner providers over a 12-month period.
At the end of the trial, the answer was clear (pun intended). In 2021, PDS committed to further our partnership with Envista by offering the Spark Clear Aligner system to supported clinicians. Now, over a year later, more than 170 PDS-supported general dentists and orthodontists have become Spark providers and have approved over 1,200 cases.
The Spark Clear Aligner system offers patients a product with several key advantages over competing products. Spark aligners are made using proprietary TruGENTM material, the latest innovation in aligners that is nearly invisible and clearer compared to the leading competitor. This material also minimizes staining from drinking coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc., which improves the discreet nature of the aligners. Additionally, Spark is designed with scalloped and smooth edges to enhance patient comfort and improve the overall treatment experience.
For clinicians and their teams, Spark offers more advanced and sustained force retention from its TruGEN material which may result in more effective treatment outcomes. The aligners also provide closer contacts with the surface area of the tooth with only 99μm between contacts as compared to 180μm for the leading aligner brand. This type of contact may result in more efficient tooth movement.
“The attachment process is very smooth. The dental assistants in my office prefer the Spark template when compared to other templates from competitor aligner products,” Orthodontist Boyd Martin, DMD, of Hamner Dental Group (Office 12) said. And if that’s not enough, the Spark Clear Aligner system provides a cost savings for PDS-supported practices that increases the revenue per patient while providing an easy-touse platform and a consistent high level of support reinforced by PDS and Envista’s strategic partnership. Many clinicians appreciate the value of the aligner system—it provides a compelling product at a competitive price point. Additionally, offices appreciate the Kerr consumable goods credit that is offered with every Spark case which potentially reduces overhead for pre-selected supplies that are commonly used.
“From chairside digital scanning to uploading the case, to the treatment planning software and case assessment, delivering the aligners and attachments, it is a fantastic, straight forward, easy-to-use platform. I am very happy to have made the switch to Spark as the clear aligner treatment option of choice in my practice,” Owner Dentist Marisol King, DDS, of Cottonwood Smiles Dentistry (Office 567).
As we look to the future of clear aligner therapy, we are excited about the opportunity our partnership with Envista presents to continue to provide an industry-leading clear aligner experience for our supported clinicians and their patients. As we continue to support clinicians and ensure a partnership that stays ahead of innovations and improvements in the industry for years to come, we invite clinicians and operators alike to share feedback about the Spark Clear Aligner system by emailing ClearAlignerSupport@pacden.com
It’s priceless to have the option to revise a treatment plan without restrictions through Spark Comprehensive. It offers flexibility by allowing for unlimited refinements at a reduced cost. It’s a win-win for the clinician and patient.

Every year, top performers from across the organization are invited to attend the President’s Club, Pinnacle Club and OM Champions Club and rewarded with a PDS-sponsored trip to a beautiful, destination location. PDS strives to provide a 5-star experience and allow time for pampering, relaxation and collaboration with each other. Each recipient may bring one guest to attend.
Hosted by Founder and CEO Steve Thorne, this is awarded to topperforming dentists (owner, associate, pediatric ODs and specialists) and regional partners nominated for Region of the Year during the previous year.
Awarded to regional managers and directors in two categories based on top NOI% and highest % over NOI dollars. They must also manage six or offices for the entire year to qualify for participation. Selected regional and national support team members are awarded an invitation to this event as well.
Awarded to the top 72 operations and pediatric managers whose offices have achieved 3% top line, 5% bottom line year-over-year growth and have worked in the office at least six months of the year. There are five categories overall; 4+ years, 2-4 years, 0-2 years, pediatric and total NOI dollars.
Details of categories and qualifications are outlined in the Rewards & Recognition Program on the PDSConnect intranet under Departments > Events and Travel > Recognition Programs. Incentive Club rankings will be announced quarterly through a PDSConnect email beginning in April and updated monthly on your MY Job pages on the intranet throughout the year.
This year, more than 300 hardworking extraordinary performers and their spouses/guests were invited to relax with fellow team members at the President’s Club trip in Chileno Bay, Cabo San Lucas, the Pinnacle Club trip in Punta Mita, Mexico and the OM Champions Club in Newport Beach, Calif.
In between rest and relaxation, the topics of providing patientcentric care and mentorship came up often between clinicians. As they celebrated one another, many reflected over the true meanings of leadership and shared what they enjoyed most about their experiences.

I got to meet so many amazing owner dentists from around the country and share our office success stories while learning from each other’s struggles.
I loved connecting with more seasoned ODs, such as Diana Do-Yabut, DMD. She shared how she manages juggling being a good dentist, a boss lady and a mom.
I look forward to more trips with this group of exceptional clinicians.
Having the opportunity to spend time with some of the top leaders in the organization in a social setting has been quite an amazing experience.
I am motivated to stay focused, engaged and will continue to elevate my team’s and my own performance every day.
Maximizing each opportunity is what a great leader does. Being amongst leaders that share your same passion is such a great feeling. You get to learn about their challenges and how they turned them into opportunities for growth and then take those experiences back to your team.
As the dental industry continues to evolve, PDS-supported clinicians are focused on elevating the quality of oral health care provided to patients. This starts with clinical leadership. In December 2021, regional clinical partners were identified to partner with regional partners in leading their respective regions in clinical excellence, advancing the PDS platform, implementing proven technologies, and the recruiting and development of new and potential owner doctors. In addition, this key clinical role will work directly with our National Clinical Council, formed to define, execute and scale standards and best practices that achieve clinical excellence and best possible health outcomes. Those clinical leaders are pictured left.
Over the past year, these clinical leaders have shared their structure and best practices to support new owner dentists and future potential partner success.
• Assess, onboard and teach quality team members with intentionality
• Master the fundamentals of the platform:
• The Perfect Patient Experience®, CEREC® CAD/CAM and Diagnosis & Treatment Planning
• Clinical, People and Business Leadership
• Partnership with operations and regional teams
•
One example to support mastering the fundamentals is the Future Potential Partners (FPP) boot camp. Over 200 FPPs attended the boot camp since its inception in June 2022. Originating in the South Florida market with Minh Pham, DDS, the key to the success of these programs is operational support and role play. The partnership between clinical and operations support is key.
As we continue to focus on the success of today with our eye on tomorrow, clinical leadership is committed to leading by example and supporting the future success and clinical excellence of all PDS-supported clinicians.
Last December, Pacific Dental Services® announced the implementation of its new organizational structure to help leverage our national scale while maintaining a distinctly local focus on individual dental practices. This structure anticipated the need for 6-8 territory partners (TPs) across the country, each with the primary responsibility to help their regional partners (RPs) achieve operational and financial success in their respective markets.
The TPs act as leaders and operational experts for the expanding RP team and owner dentists (ODs) on how to execute the PDS platform, remain operationally excellent and demonstrate a passion to help others succeed. Having experienced operators in leadership roles permit us to accelerate the development of our best and brightest – a prerequisite if we are to hit our growth goals in the years to come – while not disrupting our organizational structure and the relationships we have with our ODs.
We now have three TPs fully operational and want to formally introduce the expanded leadership team. The future is now and the future looks bright.

Meet Dr. Adam Hildebrandt: a dentist at Woodbury Smiles Dentistry by day and a performing indie country artist by night. Dr. Hildebrandt’s parents won meet-and-greet tickets on the radio and asked the star for a guitar. Shortly after, a guitar arrived at his doorstep. Dr. Hildebrandt uses the stage name “Adam Brandt” for country and “Bark Point” for his indie bluegrass music. What began as a pandemic hobby with a close friend evolved into two EP records and three singles. The multi-instrumental singer has already experienced a sold-out show with his team members in attendance. John Mayer first inspired him to play the guitar. “He’s a phenomenal artist. I feel like I know him because I know all his songs by heart.”
While in dental school, Dr. Hildebrandt discovered dentistry has a creative side. “Professionally, I sculpt teeth. Either through CEREC® CAD/CAM technology or with fillings, dentists are artists and sculptors of teeth,” Dr. Hildebrandt said. “As for my hobby, I create and write music. Both are artistic outlets and each has a unique purpose in impacting lives.”
What’s next for Dr. Hildebrandt? He plans to release more music and explore music further. When asked if he would perform at NSC, he smiled widely with an enthusiastic, “Yes! Let’s make it happen.”

Fixing an athlete’s broken teeth moments before a game is not an everyday occurrence for PDS-supported owner dentist Alexander Samuel, DMD, but it does happen more than you’d expect.
While volunteering recently at the Healthy Athletes Special Smiles event hosted by the Special Olympics USA Games, Dr. Samuel and Dental Assistant Mercedes Rosario were needed to repair a broken tooth just one hour before the athlete was scheduled to compete. Luckily, the athlete was in good hands. This was not the first time Dr. Samuel was called into action at an athletic competition. He also serves as the team dentist for the Orlando City professional soccer team.
Dr. Samuel views his work as a way of molding his favorite hobbies into one—a love for dentistry and a passion for service.
“There are so many people in need within our community. A lot of athletes put their time and energy towards training so oral health is often a lesser priority,” Dr. Samuel said. “With the help of my team, we help bridge the gap of oral health needs with the resources we can provide. I couldn’t do what I do without them,” he humbly added.
Dr. Samuel lives a lifestyle of selfless service. He also provided dental care to the homeless and the elderly in local nursing homes.
“Service is the main reason why I pursued dentistry. My aunt is a dentist in India and it was through her service I was inspired to go to dental school.”
Dr. Samuel hopes to travel back to India to serve. In the meantime, we are grateful to him and his team for helping patients deliver extraordinary performance both on and off the field.

It goes beyond the four corners of the court, two baskets and one ball. For Gerardo, a former D-1 bound player, basketball is more than just a game. It’s an opportunity to bring people together and invest in the future – coaching young athletes to achieve their potential.
“It’s a team sport. You can’t do it by yourself,” Gerardo said. “You need a team in order to succeed.”
Building on this mantra, he spends his off-work hours coaching middle school and Filmore High School students. “I just love seeing how the sport develops them. I can help them reach their goals and share my knowledge.”
When he’s not coaching, he’s running a fast break on the weekends playing in a men’s league at the YMCA. To see Gerardo running up and down the court with his ready-to-win laced shoes, you would never know his is a comeback story.
His collegiate basketball career launched the same way many do: highly ambitious and eager to make a statement. But just one wrong move while going up for a rebound during an important game and a dislocated ankle ended his career.
Unable to put any pressure on his ankle, he defaulted to swimming and spent a year in physical therapy and rehab. Refusing to let this experience define him, Gerardo eventually triumphantly stepped back on the court and transformed his narrative into one of growth. Basketball is still a big part of his life, except now he’s giving back to his community what he’s received from the sport, following in the footsteps of his favorite player LeBron James.
“Whether physical or mental barriers, you must keep pushing through. The pain is helping you grow and making you better –just like life.”

They say there is no halftime for cheerleaders and Katrina Davis will be the first to admit that the sport isn’t for the faint of heart. For the past eight years, she has volunteered as cheerleading coach for the Manteca Chargers Football and Cheer where she is also on the board as cheer coordinator. The youth organization is made up entirely of volunteers including her husband, who coaches football. Her two daughters are on the cheer team and her 16-year-old son plays football.
“It’s a team sport. Not only do the kids have 50 sideline cheers they have to learn, but they also tumble, do stunts and throw each other around. It takes a lot of skill, practice and trust,” the mother of six said. “Sometimes I’m out on the field from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., especially if it’s a home game, but it’s what I love to do. Being in a supportive role at PDS has helped me find that balance.”
Katrina expects nothing but greatness from her cheer squad. More than anything, she finds great joy knowing she is helping kids develop new skills and build self-confidence. As a coach, she wants her team to understand that success comes from working together and doing what’s best for the team, especially when they’re competing.
“Cheerleading is a team sport. If we work together, we win together.”

From dewy-eyed sixth graders to freshly-licensed high school seniors, Tracy Smith has spent the last 24 years dedicating her free time to a non-profit and faith-based ministry helping students navigate the challenging time of adolescence. Many of her students are disconnected from their parents and some deal with serious life issues such as abuse or suicidal ideation, underscoring the significance of Tracy’s impact in creating a nurturing, solid foundation.
For Tracy, it’s simple to pinpoint what fulfills her about working with the youth: investing in the next generation. Whether acting as a mentor and helping them find purpose or lending a listening ear, Tracy often serves as more than a role model, but a friend and confidant. Tracy sees her work as much more than a short-term mentorship or occasional weekend labor of love, it’s a calling. “I have the privilege and unique lens of being able to watch the next generation navigate changes and sometimes difficult challenges,” Tracy said. “Most of the time, kids just need a trusted adult to talk to and guidance with their ‘why.’”
Through Bible study, sporting events, mission or camp trips and coffee runs, she’s able to intentionally build relationships and guide the students in personal development.
Many of these relationships have developed into friendships long after the kids are grown. Tracy recalled one significant story where she reached out to a young girl coping with depression and suicidal thoughts. Instead of focusing on the negative, Tracy helped the girl, a talented artist, transform her mind through art. With Tracy’s guidance, she went on to pursue a degree in Psychology and is now working with at-risk teens at a juvenile detention center.
“My faith and the relationships I have built over time are extremely important to me,” Tracy said. “Relationships can only be built by honest, vulnerable conversations which allow us to help each other grow.”
Family stories and cultural traditions passed down from generation to generation bring to mind a tapestry of memories filled with laughter and reflection, while reminding us to be grateful for the small things in life. With the holidays around the corner, we asked team members to share their most treasured memories.
(SHAW) BUCKHALTER“In our family it is so important to give back to those in need. During this time of year, we reflect on what we’re thankful for individually and as a family. Every November we put out our “Thankful Tree”, an empty tree-like branch, where we hang tags with messages of thankfulness. We also open up the “Thankful Tree” to any guests that may come over and encourage them to write what they are thankful for and place it on the tree. A great reminder of just how blessed we are.”
“Every Christmas, my husband loves to decorate the exterior of the house à la Clark Griswold (of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”). He loves creating and sharing the magic of the holiday season and 2020 was no different. It was a rough year for many people due to the pandemic and he decided he wanted to add some fun and holiday spirit by handing out tree ornaments to anyone who drove by to check out the lights. That first year we handed out over 200 ornaments, and he plans to continue that tradition for years to come.”
“Growing up, my mom always made butterscotch pull-a-parts on Christmas Eve, a recipe she found from the “Joy of Baking.” We would wake up to them baking on Christmas morning. She would also number our presents instead of putting our names on them so that everyone was surprised on Christmas morning. It’s a tradition I’ve brought to my own little family.”
“Every Christmas Eve, the family gets together at grandma and grandpa’s house for dinner and gift-giving, but everyone’s favorite part of the night comes after dinner and gifts. I’m not sure when or why this tradition started, but every year my grandma custom orders a huge piece of chocolate molded to look like Santa Claus. She chooses one of the kids, gives them a hammer and they proceed to smash the chocolate, which we all get to eat together. We take pictures and video every year and have an entire album dedicated to all the smashing over the years.”
“Our Christmas tradition grew out of our daughter’s penchant for investigating the contents of her gifts before Christmas. After discovering she would open gifts with her name and reseal them, we decided to put numbers on the gift tags instead of names. To make it more interesting, we created a list of clues for each recipient and matched them to the numbers for each child. As we sat to open presents, we would read the clues and everyone would guess who it belonged to. That person would then read the next clue, slowing down the gift-opening frenzy. Even after our kids became adults and had kids of their own, we’re now going on 23 years with this holiday tradition.”
Ken Davis, pictured in the back holding up a tablet.
JASMINE BENNISON Regional Marketing Manager New Mexico/Southern Colorado region“Every year on Dec.1, three of Santa’s little elves visit the corner of Farragut and Quinn Street to bring a little extra magic to the Bennison home. Like clockwork, Elsa, Sparkle and Glitter bring three gingerbread house kits and a whole lot of excitement for my three daughters. The girls love waking up each day to see what sort of mischief the elves got into and it has become a running tradition. Our elves truly represent the kickoff of the holidays and moving them each day creates so much joy.”
Together you changed 550 lives and gave $541,542 in donated dentistry in 2022 while serving at the PDS® Foundation Clinica Dental in Xenacoj, Guatemala.
This year marked our return to the PDS Foundation Clinica Dental in Xenacoj, Guatemala after a two-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Team members, supported clinicians and volunteers traveled to Guatemala on three separate occasions to serve donated dentistry and more.
“Serving the Guatemalan people through dentistry at the clinic was an awesome, humbling and rewarding experience for me and my children,” Rittu Gill, DDS, said.
The September 2022 trip was our largest group of volunteers to date. With such a large group, Hilda Chiquitó, Operations Manager, found creative service opportunities such as treating patients at a local shelter for women and children using a mobile dentistry unit. Non-clinical volunteers also visited homes in rural Xenacoj to build showers, repair roofing and add siding to existing homes.
“Everyone here has touched my life. You are so dear and special to me, I’m still so full of emotions,” said Jeny Villanueva, dental assistant at PDS Foundation Dentists for Special Needs. “So happy and thrilled to be part of something bigger than me. Thank you all.”
Thank you to all of our volunteers who served with us in 2022.

With the support from PDS vendors and a $100,000 match from PDS, both campaigns raised $573,000 to support the PDS® Foundation Special Needs Dentistry Program.
This past fall, PDS partnered with the PDS Foundation (PDSF) to support two separate fundraising efforts to provide more access to care for patients in the special needs community. Smile for Special Needs was an external, patient-facing promotion running from Sept. 1-Oct. 31 for PDS-supported practices. The second campaign, Stroll for Special Needs, was designed to double the fun by encouraging all internal team members to donate and participate in the annual 5k Oct. 3-9. Both campaigns benefitted the PDSF Special Needs Dentistry Program.
Regions across the country hosted fundraising contests, decorated their offices with dandelions and had important conversations with patients about why special needs dentistry is important. These efforts were met with donations and gratitude.
Fun fact: Dandelions were selected as the symbol for the Special Needs Dentistry Program because of their ability to thrive in difficult conditions. Just as dandelions thrive, our wish is to help people with special needs thrive even more with healthier, happier smiles.
Throughout this campaign, many donors shared their thoughts on why access to care is so important.
“I am making this donation to honor my 18-year-old grandson who has profound quadriplegic cerebral palsy. I’d like to express my gratitude for all dentists who recognize the unique issues of special-needs children and adults, and who treat them with loving care and compassion.”
“I love what you all are doing for the special needs community. As a special education educator, I would love to see this organization expand in other states and cities.”
“I’ve supported my friend, Kim, who has cerebral palsy, through several dental visits. Dental care for people with disabilities is critical. Thank you for doing this!”
In October, more than 1,000 PDS-supported clinicians, team members, family and friends walked, ran, rolled and strolled 3,100 miles in the third annual Stroll for Special Needs 5K. That’s enough to walk from San Diego to Maine.
Together, both campaigns raised $573,000 to support the PDSF Special Needs Dentistry Program. Thank you to all who participated. We are humbled by your commitment, teamwork and generosity.
In 2013, PDS partnered with the PDS Foundation (PDSF), a non-profit organization helping make oral health more accessible to people with special needs. There are over 61 million people with intellectual and physical disabilities in the U.S. and one of the largest health care issues facing those in need is the inability to access comprehensive oral health care. PDS partners with the PDSF to provide training for dental professionals and advocates for the special needs community to increase and improve access to care. Additionally, the PDSF responded to this urgent need by opening the first PDSF Dentists for Special Needs office in Phoenix, Ariz.
In October, PDS celebrated National Dental Hygiene Month (NDHM). Dental hygienists play an integral role in the early detection and treatment of periodontal pathogens, inflammation control and long-term disease management. Many times, it is the hygienist who first helps educate patients about the importance of blood pressure control, oral cancer screenings and risks associated with sleep apnea. Beyond this important work, hygienists also serve as a source of comfort for anxious patients and a friend at the chairside. In recognition of NDHM, we honored our dental hygienists across the country on social media and through celebratory recognitions and treats. Congratulations to Torrance 2 (Office 418), Seal Beach, Rossmoor (Office 272) and Huntington Beach 3 (Office 283) for performing the most Oral DNA tests in October as part of the NDHM contest. While October may be the dedicated month to honor this critical role, it’s the work they do year-round to create Happier, Healthier Patients® that is the real accomplishment. You make us smile.
We believe extraordinary performance should be rewarded with the opportunity to serve. This year, PDS honored the North Inland Empire and South Los Angeles regions (formerly called the Pacific South Coast region) as the Region of the Year. This recognition comes with a special opportunity to build a playground with KABOOM!, a national nonprofit that unites with communities to build play spaces for those who disproportionally have less access to play where they learn and live.
On Saturday, Nov. 12, PDS team members demonstrated the power of teamwork by building a playground in just one day at the YMCA of Greater Long Beach 70th Street Preschool. This playground is Smile Generation’s 17th playground build in partnership with KABOOM! since 2010. With the help of dozens of PDS team members, this playground will serve generations of families and children to come.
In August, team members across the country joined forces to make a lasting impact in their communities for the 12th Annual Smile Generation Serve Day. Together, we provided more than $7.6 million in donated dentistry to over 2,500 patients through national partnerships with Modivcare, Dental Lifeline Network, After Innocence and the Freedom Child Foundation among others. Whether you changed someone’s life by giving them a new smile, donated blood, created cards for kids fighting cancer or worked to keep our parks and beaches beautiful, thank you for the tremendous impact you made in your communities. Next year’s Smile Generation Serve Day will be on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023.
PDS participated in its inaugural No-Shave November, a fun, month-long campaign dedicated to raising awareness for men’s health including testicular, colorectal and prostate cancers, mental health and suicide prevention. Whether sporting a beard or wearing a stick-on mustache, team members demonstrated the power of teamwork by growing awareness, and hair-ness, for men’s health. Thank you to all who participated. Hairy Styles, we’ll see you again next year.
Clinical clarity is essential to scale health care to the demand of patients in need.
But what does clinical clarity actually mean? In brief, clinical clarity is the execution of the clinical culture document and relies on the owner dentist’s (OD) leadership for how the flow and direction of the back office works. It also means team members are versed in the patient engagement practices of the Perfect Patient Experience (PPE)®
How can we ensure that clinical clarity is achieved in all our supported practices? It begins by breaking down the concept of clinical excellence into bite-size pieces and understanding its ideals. When put into writing, every clinician and team member can read, ask questions, rehearse and be held accountable to performing and upholding these standards within their practices.
Multi-practice owner dentist Karim Zaklama, DDS, has a well-written and thoroughly executed clinical culture document that serves as an excellent example. His document features three clearly articulated aspects:
• Category of treatment: Scaling and root planning, indirect crowns, extractions, etc.
• Indication: What are the condition(s) that require this treatment?
• Consequences of leaving the condition untreated: Informing the patient issues other patients have experienced when leaving conditions untreated including systemic issues.
Implementing these practices begins with leadership. An experienced clinician can see what needs to be done and gives the necessary direction to ensure a clear picture for the team, a great patient experience and an outcome that includes Healthier, Happier Patients®. Charles Rodgers, DDS, VP, Clinical Quality, is known for his ability to step into an underperforming practice and restore order within days, set expectations and produce outcomes that meet all stakeholders’ needs. Once a practice is stable, it is able to move forward with a working culture.
The best ODs lead through their presence and from this comes clarity for the team. Some of the most successful ODs engage team members during the morning huddle, ask reflective questions about the Daily XP and are prepared to review their schedules with each patient’s clinical needs. They are present in FORMOL and FORQOL reflecting on the financial needs of the practice and engaging operational leaders for help. Additionally, their presence when performing monthly reviews with their clinicians yields the fastest orientation and onboarding of their associate dentists. These types of reviews are effective when the OD focuses on the associate’s performance and development while encouraging them to examine areas of growth and opportunity.
Clinical clarity takes on multiple disciplines: A discipline of a clearly articulated clinical culture document, clear direction related to the flow of the back office and modeled leadership that engages team members in meetings, during financial reviews and in monthly clinical reviews. When this is achieved within a practice, region or organization, providers will be aligned and patients will receive the highest standard of care with the PPE.

Creative strategy. Elevated design. Digital optimization. Patient communication. Revenue driver.
The future looks bright in the Marketing department.
Nina Robinson VP, Marketing, Digital and Patient ExperienceThe foundation of every successful relationship is built on trust and communication. The same is true for the relationship between PDS-supported practices and their patients. In the latter instance, marketing communications are essential for providing a consistent influx of patients, creating digital touchpoints for the Perfect Patient Experience® and contributing to operational success.
The PDS Marketing department provides support and services related to graphic design, social media, search engine optimization, patient email campaigns, copywriting, web development and everything in between.
The average adult has 32 teeth, so naturally the Marketing department has 32 reasons to help you understand The Mouth-Body Connection and the role harmful bacteria and inflammation in our mouths play in chronic, systemic disease. Many patients are unaware of The Mouth-Body Connection. The 32 Reasons book is designed to educate and empower readers to take charge of their oral health while increasing case acceptance internally and externally. To access the book, please visit the Smile Generation website
In 2011, Smile Generation, a consumer-facing brand of PDSsupported practices, was born. Technological advancements, competition, industry disruption, even a pandemic have brought significant changes since those early days, but the foundation of the brand remains the same: To provide a consistent, patient-centric care experience rooted in clinical excellence and provided by trusted clinicians at every PDS-supported practice across the country.
The team has strategized for current and future success for Smile Generation-trusted offices. Within the next five years, our strategic imperative for success is to build and leverage the Smile Generation brand and essentially own The Mouth-Body Connection®. The brand promise? To create healthier, happier smiles by inspiring and facilitating the next generation of oral health and overall wellness.
“I can’t think of any bolder, better idea than to challenge ourselves to revolutionize primary health care in the United States,” PDS Founder and CEO Stephen Thorne said.
Whether through online appointment scheduling, creative quarterly promotional campaigns and ongoing content development, the Marketing team has helped lead this initiative through digital and creative optimization. In the coming months, an improved Smile Generation-trusted office model and structure will be announced. Be on the lookout for more information.
The Generation of Smiles magazine is a consumerfacing, digital publication produced quarterly by the Marketing department and designed to educate patients about the oral-systemic link. By starting conversations about oral health and the impact on heart health, brain health, women’s/maternal health, diabetes and more, patients across the country have shared positive feedback about the educational resources provided.
“I really appreciated the latest issue of the magazine focused on women’s health and the connections to oral health. I am amazed to learn how interconnected they are. I’m grateful to have this information and to be able to share with others so we can all do a better job of prioritizing our oral health. Oral health care is true self-care!” – Danielle M., Patient

It’s a simple phrase that just makes you smile. New shirt? Looks good on you. New haircut? Looks good on you!
Coming from someone else, it almost always makes you feel good. But what really feels good is seeing a healthier, happier smile staring back at you in the mirror—and saying it to yourself with confidence. Looks good on you.
Whether that be a routine cleaning, getting braces, replacing a crown, (and yes, even a root canal) your smile is something to be treasured. Coming soon to inboxes coast-to-coast, the Q1 campaign looks good on PDS.
The state-of-the-art hygiene program adopted by PDS-supported owner dentists not only raises the bar of clinical excellence, but it sets industry standards for others to follow. In October, we celebrated National Dental Hygiene Month and recognized almost 1,400 PDS-supported hygienists for their commitment to oral-systemic wellness and the integral role they play in educating patients about The Mouth-Body Connection® all year long.
The Mouth-Body Connection Part of the PDS five-year strategic growth strategy includes a focus on improved periodontal health outcomes by moving toward a predictive, rather than reactive, periodontology model. With all the advancements in science such as blood and saliva screenings like OralDNA, aMMP-8 (PerioFitness) and HbA1c, hygienists are on the front lines of predictive care. For all clinicians, this means a greater ability to help stabilize a patient’s dental disease, resulting in better overall health outcomes. For patients, this means access to earlier detection of genetic risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dementia, cancer and so much more.
So far, 30 offices have begun HbA1c testing, a blood test that indicates a patient’s average blood sugar (glucose) level within the last 2-3 months and, while it cannot diagnose, can help detect whether a person has or is at risk of diabetes or prediabetes. During initial HbA1c testing, out of more than 480 tests PDS-supported practices have performed, 29% of patients were found to have glucose numbers that fell in the pre-diabetic to diabetic range. We anticipate offering HbA1c testing to additional offices in 2023.
With change comes an exciting adventure for the future of dental hygiene.
• OralDNA Labs®: In November, PDS integrated OralDNA Labs with Epic to simplify the lab-ordering process by eliminating scanning and expediting results. As you may be aware, salivary diagnostics can detect high-risk periodontal pathogens that cause periodontal disease and threaten oral-systemic health. Genetic risk screening of interleukin-6 (IL -6 ) can establish patients who are at increased risk for more severe periodontal infections due to an exaggerated immune response. Offering an integrated model of testing, in addition to clinical examination, helps patients and team members better understand their treatment choices. The Alert 2 combination test, a combination of MyPerioPath® and MyPerioID®, is part of the PDS team member dental plan with a copayment of $10. Visit the Dental tab on the Benefits homepage of the PDSConnect intranet to learn more.
• PerioFitness Testing: Dentognostics is our researchdriven technology partner known for advancements in “PerioFitness”, a test designed to detect the aMMP-8 enzyme, or biomarker, related to collagen breakdown seen in periodontitis. In 2022, PDS expanded its pilot of PerioFitness testing in an additional 48 offices. Early but very promising outcomes indicate this screening is enhancing patient care not only though case acceptance but increased patient retention rates. Additional deployments are planned in 2023 with the inclusion and build-out of Epic integration.
• HbA1c Testing: PDS launched a pilot program in Clark County, Nev. to introduce HbA1c testing at the chairside in supported practices with a focus on the diabetic patient population. Every year an estimated 21,422 people in Nevada are diagnosed with diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 254,570 people in Nevada, or 10.6% of the adult population, have been diagnosed with diabetes. An additional 70,000 people in Nevada have diabetes but don’t know it, greatly increasing their health risk.
Additionally, PDS unveiled its Smile Generation® Dental Plan with a diabetes focus, targeting diabetic and prediabetic patients in the region and offering them inexpensive dental coverage, diabetic screenings, discounted benefits and more. For many patients that are without dental insurance, cost is one of the primary factors hindering patients from accepting diagnosed dental treatments.
For years, oral health was considered a separate component from the rest of the body, like two different books sitting on different shelves, often taught independent of one another.
Today, we understand that oral health and overall health are bidirectionally linked. With Epic fully deployed in all PDSsupported practices, primary care providers and dental clinicians can collaborate to deliver comprehensive integrated treatment plans, a shift from the previous care delivery approach. Change
challenges us to improve and encourages clinicians to embrace the unknown, often an uncomfortable feeling. But with the unknown comes a great adventure and one in which PDS is strategically positioned to maintain competitive advantage.
As periodontal care and treatment evolves, exploring change and advancements will require hard work, self-reflection and some growing pains, as all great adventures do. Together, we are learning, adapting and rewriting the next chapter of dentistry. Let’s get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

*For active, full-time team members and clinicians.
From dental assistant to orthodontics to kids’ dentistry to National Support Center, Starr’s career has covered a lot of ground over the last 17 years.
What about orthodontics sparks your interest?
As a teenager, I had orthodontics and loved the energy in the office. When I had the opportunity to help with ortho I immediately loved how I could work independently at the direction of the orthodontist and get to know the patients.
What was your experience transitioning from back office to manager of kids dentistry and ortho?
I loved continually learning, asking questions and making valued suggestions. I always had opportunities to push myself and take on more responsibility as I felt I could handle. We were quickly growing ortho, so there were different ways I could help. My boss at the time listened to what I envisioned and supported me.
What is the most fulfilling part of your work?
I love hiring and training newer assistants. Seeing how much they appreciate the effort I put into their training is what drives me to keep learning. I run into ortho DA’s who I hired years ago and many are still working with PDS. It motivates me to know I helped impact their career with PDS.
If your work at PDS for the past 17 years had a message, what would it be?
Your career as an assistant is what you make of it. If you want to learn specialty or additional specialties, the opportunity is there. If you want to be a leader or change your career path, the opportunity is there. Hard work and consistency pay off. Because PDS is constantly growing and continues to be a leader in the industry, you’ll never get bored or run out of opportunities for learning and advancement.
What was your career path at PDS?
I started as a dental assistant for nine years before becoming a lead dental assistant for 20 years. I have worked in three locations. My first was with Dr. Ghazal at her first office, Victor Valley Dental Group, in Hesperia, Calif. I was there for seven years, then relocated to Inland Empire Dental Group for another seven. Finally, I worked with Dr. Ghazal at Rancho Cucamonga Dental Group until I retired.
Which is your favorite We Believe and why?
We believe only God knows what tomorrow holds. You might have a whole path planned out, but you never know what’s going to happen. You just have to trust and have faith.
After 28 years with Pacific Dental Services, DeAnn Dowell said goodbye in November. DeAnn began and ended her PDS career working with Carolyn Ghazal, DDS, in two separate offices, her first location at Victor Valley Dental Group and finally North Rancho Cucamonga Dental Group (Office 62). DeAnn shared some highlights of her career and what she is most looking forward to about retirement.
Why did you choose PDS?
While in high school, my mom told me about the dental assistant program through the Reserve Officer Training Corporation, so my friends and I signed up. After taking a break from dental assisting for 14 years due to marriage and kids, I courageously applied to PDS. I told the hiring manager that if they chose me, they were choosing someone who is hard working, dependable and loyal. As soon as I got home from the interview, I received a call saying I got the job.
What brought you the most satisfaction during your career?
First, helping people. There’s something amazing about seeing people come in insecure or sometimes in pain and leaving with a confident, beautiful smile. Secondly, working with a great team. It’s not always where you work, but the people you work with. I’ve had an awesome opportunity to work with Dr. Ghazal. It felt like home. I’ve been lucky to say that.
What are you most excited for in your next chapter?
My mother is turning 91 in March. I’m going to spend more time with her and my five grandchildren. We’re celebrating their first birthdays now – four of them are three months apart from each other.
Do you have any parting words?
I’d like to say thank you for the opportunity. It was truly an awesome experience working with Dr. Ghazal and seeing Steve Thorne build this incredible company. They gave me the opportunity to feel secure and safe. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
After 21 years with Pacific Dental Services, 19 of which were spent as the Regional Manager of the San Diego market, Carol Garner has retired. We asked her to share some parting words of wisdom before she left. Here is what she had to say:
What are your top 3 memorable moments at PDS? I think being part of the 10-year and 20-year anniversaries are highlights. I also opened the 400th De Novo a couple of years ago and I was the first manager to open one of the San Diego offices.
From your experience, what is the core element of PDS? The core is definitely your team, your people and the individual offices. Team members are the drivers. I’ve always been a believer the reason why we’re here is because of the individual offices.
What has evolved over the past 20+ years?
From my perspective, the infrastructure has changed since when I first started as a manager – there weren't many systems available. Now, there's a training component and you’re able to reach out to people for questions.
What are you most excited for in your next chapter?
I was a Navy wife for 25 years, and we did a lot of moving over the years. So right now, I’m excited for my house to be finished being built. It's going to be nice to set up my art room and start dabbling in art again and showing my grandkids how to paint.
What’s your advice to team members?
I would say you have to enjoy it, be flexible and be the savvy businessperson who's inside you so that you can support offices with their growth in the ways they need.
“Thirty years ago, Dr. Carolyn Ghazal was my founding dentist partner who helped create this entire ‘experiment’ called Pacific Dental Services. In 1991, we first created the concept and structure when Dr. Ghazal bought into a practice with my father in Hesperia, Calif. What I loved about her then (and still love about her now), is she is not afraid to take a calculated risk. At the time, and still is to a degree, the risk was choosing me as the CEO. Dr. Ghazal has an amazing work ethic and sometimes unhuman stamina to keep pressing even when times get challenging. She doesn’t see problems, only opportunities. She has helped me find and make the right decisions, even when the decision wasn’t the most financially advantageous. Dr. Ghazal believes that people always come first and there is no room for anything but clinical excellence. It has been a fun (and challenging) 30 years together. She works just as hard today as when we started to create a lasting legacy of PDS leading the world in oral health care and dental-medical integration. What an awesome way to start the second half of her career. Nobody can ask for a better partner.”
“Dr. Lynda Watanabe has been my friend and partner for 30 years now. For those of you who don’t know her, she is one of the most positive people I know. Lynda is always up for a good time and a good laugh. Her work ethic is unparalleled. If I remember correctly, she worked up until the day before she gave birth to her first child and was back in the office one or two days later. That is the level of her commitment.
Her success is proven with so many owner dentists and operators coming out of her practices over the years. She is one of the best examples I know of an individual who figured out how to integrate her love of work and family. Married to Bryan Watanabe, also an owner dentist, the dynamic duo has found a way to not only work together in the same office, but have a very successful marriage. Lynda is the definition of independent and it has been my pleasure to not only support her practices throughout the years, but to remain close friends. Congratulations on 30 wonderful years, Lynda.”
– Stephen Thorne, Founder and CEOQ: What legacy do you hope to leave behind at PDS?
A: Twenty-five years ago, I didn’t know what a DSO was, let alone expect all the amazing doors that would open once you became a team member. PDS has provided so many opportunities for me to learn and grow both professionally and personally. My wish for when the time comes to leave PDS is for those that I have had the opportunity to train, support and mentor will continue to lead with a passion for training and development as they guide the PDS journey through the next generation of health care. Thank you for allowing me to be part of the journey.
Bryan Watanabe, DDS, Owner Dentist South Inland Empire RegionQ: What legacy do you hope to leave behind at PDS?
A: I’ve been truly blessed to be part of the growth of PDS from the start and am fortunate to have learned a lot along the way. I hope to pass on to my successors the importance of maintaining the professional and sincere relationships I have had for over 25 years with not only my patients and staff, but with my dental colleagues, management and PDS support team.
Q: What moment stood out in your career here at PDS?
A: A patient I had known and treated since she was in a stroller expressed interest in dentistry. I suggested she pursue hygiene and she did. She came back after finishing hygiene school and shared how thankful she was that I helped guide her towards her dream career.
Q: What advice would you give to team members on how to own their development?
A: My best advice would be to utilize and absorb any mentoring and guidance that is offered from a clinician. What we learn in school is nothing compared to shadowing a clinical mentor. Above all, try to provide value to your colleagues and patients and you will be successful.
Q: What single piece of advice benefited you most in your career at PDS?
A: The single piece of advice that has resonated with me throughout my career at PDS is the power of teamwork. I could not have succeeded without the encouragement and support of my staff (many who have been with me 10+ years), as well as my PDS support team which enabled me to have a great work-life balance. Cheers to another 20 years.
Q: What has been a rewarding part of your 20-year journey?
A: It has been a great pleasure and learning experience to work at PDS for 20 years. I am extremely blessed and grateful for having the gift of amazing mentors, leaders and friends throughout my journey. I look forward to what the next 20 years will bring.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about working at PDS?
A: The patients and the staff have made working at PDS a joy. Also, winning Office of the Year in 2021 was a massive achievement and one I’m very proud of. Through hard work, anything is possible.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about working at PDS?
A: What I have liked most about working for PDS over the last 20 years is the adherence to the We Believe statements. The values in these statements are very important to me in the workplace and I am so thankful to work for a company that integrates these values. It has been a pleasure to work with such great people over the years.
Q: What has been a rewarding part of your 20-year journey?
A: It’s the people that I work with. It has been a wonderful 20 years together and we’ve accomplished so much as a team. It’s been a pleasure being here and it truly feels like home. Thank you for all the support and love over the years.
Q: What are your top career highlights here at PDS?
A: I have been in the same office since I started my career. It has been amazing to watch it grow and become successful. It feels good to know you were part of that journey of success.
Q: What single piece of advice benefited you most in your career at PDS?
A: ”Going Above and Beyond”, these are the epic words that helped shape my work ethic, my career and experience at PDS. These unforgettable words were emphasized during my first team meeting and I chose to incorporate them into my life.Thank you to all that I had the pleasure of working with at PDS. Thank you, PDS, for this amazing journey and I hope it continues.
Q: Describe a time you mentored a team member and the outcome of that experience.
A: I began my career as the lead dental assistant at office 73, South Corona Dental Group. In 2002, we hired my first extern, Robyn Johnson. With the help of Dr. Rodgers, I trained and coached her for a few years before she went on to receive her RDAEF certification and became a lead at a different practice. I’m grateful for PDS’ culture of support and collaboration for allowing me to help team members realize their potential.
Q: What single piece of advice benefited you most in your career here at PDS?
A: One of the most important things I was advised (by my good friend Dr. Moore) in the beginning was to “Never cut corners, do things right!” This struck a chord with me because as a kid my parents always told me, “If you are going to do something, do it well.”
Q: What are your top three career highlights here at PDS?
A: The first one was winning an XP award. I was beyond grateful for the recognition and the support PDS gave me. The second was attending the Dodger game with my PDS family and building relationships outside of the office. The new memories I create daily that continue to shape me into the person I am would be my third highlight.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about working at PDS?
A: I’ve enjoyed working with each and every one of my team members. We are truly a close-knit family. Everyone is reliable, collaborative and we come together to find solutions when challenges arise. We champion each other and have built our relationships outside of the office. Since day one, it’s been special. Thank you, PDS.
Q: What do you envision for the future of the organization and how will you play a role in bringing that vision to life?
A: My mission is to continue providing excellent care and opportunities for growth for team members. As a lead assistant, I do this by establishing the Perfect Patient Experience®, and helping patients understand the importance of their dental health, as well as help new dental hygienists and dental assistants own their development. I’m proud to be part of PDS and look forward to the future.
Q: Which We Believe do you relate with closely and how has it elevated your role?
A: We Believe that patients pay our salaries. Therefore: Everyone must do what it takes to please them. In order to succeed, we must continuously establish something special between us and our patients to create lasting relationships. I believe the way we care for and treat our patients is directly related to our personal character. Our success depends on our patients and it is our duty to treat them with respect.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about working at PDS?
A: I’ve enjoyed the people I am surrounded with and the teams I get to work with each day. Not only this, but serving the community through Smile Generation® Serve Day with my team members makes my job at PDS incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about working at PDS?
A: I love being a part of the PDS family and am thankful for the past 20 years. I consider PDS my second home. I have built so may valued relationships with our team members and strategic partners. Here’s to another 20 years.
Q: What have you appreciated most as a team member with PDS?
A: I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the people and relationships I’ve built at PDS. The culture and opportunities available are all very special. PDS holds such a high standard for supporting their team members which paved the way for the work and leadership roles I’ve had the privilege to take on over the past 20 years. I can’t thank my PDS family enough.
