The Next Era of Oral Health

Message from the

FOUNDER & CEO

Creating the Ultimate Megawave in Health Care By definition, “catch the wave” means to seize an opportunity, especially an opportunity to do something new. Earlier this year, I began describing the various eras in dentistry and introduced what I call the era of convergence—one where medical and dental are converging together through advancements in technology, medicine and science to revolutionize primary health care in the United States.

We see examples of this concept in nature and in the ocean. When two waves converge together, the resulting phenomenon is sometimes the creation of a megawave. Similarly, dental and medical are converging like never before to create a megawave in health care—and PDS is leading the way nationally and globally.

Creating a Splash Abroad and at Home As an example, PDS leaders collaborated with health care colleagues from around the world this past fall to drive progress in dental-medical integration to enhance patient care. During our visit, I stopped by The Health Society in London and explored its emphasis on the MouthBody Connection through advanced salivary diagnostics. I met with leaders from DSOs around the world at the Straumann Group DSO CEO Summit in Barcelona, Spain and our team later presented at the Interdisciplinary Congress on Preventive Medicine, Dentistry and Dental Hygiene in Cologne, Germany.

Humble and Hungry Over the last few years, PDS has relied on our hungry-and-humble philosophy to steadily prepare for the changing tides including:

• Created a scalable model for the future with clinical and operational leadership partnered together

• Invested heavily in our technology and research infrastructure like Epic, CBCT, AI, Salivary and HbA1c testing

• Developed strategic partnerships with like-minded health care organizations such as MemorialCare in Southern California

• Lobbied and advocated for Medicare to include dental coverage • Expanded our medical footprint with the acquisition of four supported medical practices and the opening of several medical de novos

And we’re not done. As we embrace the future of health care, the industry is focused on five main areas: 1. Data: Clinicians and patients empowered with health data and seamlessly integrated into EMRs 2. Integration: Incorporating dental care into the primary health care team 3. Delivery Model: Innovative new delivery models to enhance access and quality 4. Predictive Care: Advancements in technology, AI-driven longitudinal data, predictive testing and genomics 5. Health Plans: One comprehensive medical and dental health plan

Ebb and Flow This issue of PDS Life magazine is focused on introducing the medical arm of our organization and sharing more insight into the future vision and strategy. Currently, PDS has 10 supported medical offices, six of which are fully integrated with supported dental practices and more on the horizon (read more on page 2). If I have learned anything over the last 35 years in this business, it is the importance of being nimble, going with the ever-changing ebbs and flows of the industry and being agile when new opportunities arise. This is that moment.

2024 is shaping up to be a year of significant milestones. In June, PDS will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a kick-off celebration at XP 2024 in Las Vegas. Earlier in the year, we will officially cross over the 1,000 supported practices threshold. You heard that right, 1,000! With your leadership and support, we will continue to be positioned to advance the dental-medical integration conversation across the country and world.

We Are PDS I am reminded of all the hard work it took to get here beginning with our early roots in Orange County, Calif. and extending into 24 states. Your unwavering commitment, loyalty and dedication to improving health care is not only inspiring but humbling. The gratitude I feel for every team member and clinician—past and present—who has contributed to millions of healthier, happier patients is hard to put into words. So, I will try to sum it up in two—thank you! I wish you a wonderful holiday season with your family and loved ones. Let’s make 2024 a year of making waves together.

A Sea Change in Health Care PDS is leading the way in dental-medical integration with 10 medical practices, six of which are co-located with dental offices, to improve patient outcomes and reduce overall health care costs.

While Pacific Dental Services has been an early leader and advocate of dental-medical integration, lately we’ve been putting our money where our *ahem* mouth is.

Over the past five years, PDS has opened six medical practices working in tandem with supported dental offices in Nevada and partnered with four medical offices in Arizona.

In alignment with our strategy to secure vital partnerships, PDS solidified a first-of-its-kind joint venture with MemorialCare health system in Southern California and is set to open several co-located dental and medical practices over the next five years in MemorialCare Medical Group health centers throughout Orange and Los Angeles counties.

The medical and dental co-located practices will ensure a seamless coordination of care and easy access to health records for patients and providers by leveraging the power of shared electronic health records through Epic.

Expanding the PDS business model to support health care is an investment in what we have known for some time: dentalmedical integration is the future of health care. The four medical offices in Arizona are the beginning of the effort to onboard medical clinical leadership to the PDS team.

Providers are seeing the overwhelming benefits of integrated dental and medical care first-hand and early data indicates overall improvement in patient health, including: • Reduction in body mass index • Reduction in chronic high-blood pressure • Reduction or cessation of medication • Elimination of pre-diabetes symptoms • Reduction in chronic inflammatory markers “We’re seeing patients return with seriously reduced or eliminated symptoms thanks to the early detection and preventive treatment we’ve been able to provide at our co-located offices,” said Harris Khakwani, MD. “Through coordination, we can provide more personalized, tailored treatment. This means better health outcomes for patients and reduced long-term effects of chronic illness.”

The two-way referral process between offices is similarly successful. Operations managers report that when patients are referred from a medical practice to a dental office, there is a higher schedule rate, show rate and case acceptance. PDS has long advocated for treatment that reduces bad bacteria in the mouth to help reduce inflammation in the body, which is associated with chronic conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, early onset dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, pregnancy complications and more.

While the data and evidence make a strong case for dentalmedical integration, the disconnect between dental and medical disciplines and providers pose a challenge. Many medical schools provide very little oral health education; however, this wasn’t always the case. The nation’s earliest

dental schools included physician leadership, but over time and due in part to distinct curriculum and legislation, oral health was decoupled from medical education.

PDS is actively working to integrate the two through new owner dentist (OD) onboarding and training designed to include Mouth-Body Connection education. In part, new ODs say that they are driven to partner with PDS because oral health wasn’t part of their formal education. They never received operational or clinical support to successfully connect patients to oral health providers or to integrate oral care into treatment plans.

“Given the lack of education around oral health as it relates to overall health, PDS serves as an especially valuable partner,” Khakwani said. “PDS provides the education and infrastructure support for a more seamless transition to an integrated office. As a result, we can reap the benefits of shared data to deliver better, faster results — this made the decision to work with PDS a no-brainer.”

By bringing dental and medical providers together, not only do health care outcomes improve, but so do cost savings.

Reports show more than $1,000 per capita is saved every year when preventive dental treatment is provided to high-risk groups like those who have diabetes, cardiovascular disease or a history of stroke. At a time when health care costs are a national crisis, this is critical.

Further, Medicare Advantage presents more momentum to fuel the transition to an integrated system as it offers more preventive dental treatment and expanded coverage.

In the past, Medicare covered little, if any, oral health care treatment. As a result, Americans over the age of 65 have the lowest rates of dental insurance in the country. This, despite associated risk factors between periodontal disease and Alzheimer’s disease. A recent study found Porphyromonas gingivalis — one of the main bacteria associated with periodontal disease — ­ in the brain of Alzheimer’s patients. It is important that oral health be included in the conversation when discussing preventative care and treatment around Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Change is not only on the horizon, it’s already here. PDS is poised to lead the charge to make dental-medical integration a reality ensuring healthier, happier patients in the communities we serve and beyond.

Catching the MBC Wave to Provide Pediatric Dental Care Epic® can help identify mentalhealth roadblocks to providing oral health care.

As PDS-supported clinicians and team members continue to familiarize themselves with the patient information available in Epic, one pediatric dental practice owner dentist, Christine Marcelo Aquino, DDS, of My Kid’s Dentist & Orthodontics (Office 7012) in Norco, Calif., is leveraging shared health information through Care Everywhere, Epic’s interoperability technology, to identify mental illnesses that may contribute to adverse oral health conditions in her pediatric dental patients.

“Before Epic, we were unable to get a complete picture of the child’s medical history and the challenges they were experiencing, especially if not documented by the legal guardian in the medical history questionnaire,” Dr. Marcelo Aquino said. “With Epic, we are able to connect with our patients more holistically because we have a more thorough look into their medical and mental health history.”

Pediatric owner dentist Nailah-Tillman-Mukoro, Oak Forest Dental Group and Orthodontics (Office 647) agrees. “Epic allows oral health providers to work collaboratively with primary care providers by opening communication channels for efficient comprehensive care. Tasks such as medical clearances and consultations are now easily facilitated inside the interface.”

This is crucially important as mental and behavioral illnesses are on the rise in children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 15.1% of adolescents aged 12-17 reported having a major depressive episode and 18.8% seriously considered attempting suicide. Through the framework of the Mouth-Body Connection, we know that oral-systemic health links also include mental health. Studies show that 65% percent of patients who reported poor mental health also reported doing nothing about their oral health symptoms.

In addition, mental illness may lead to confusion regarding diagnosis and planned treatment and difficulty recalling instructions, which may foster mistrust between dental providers and their patients.

Now that providers have access to more patient information using Epic, these conditions can be identified and treated sooner. Epic can help providers educate about the Mouth-Body Connection by identifying opportunities to build a relationship of trust and empathy with patients and their mental health.

“With this knowledge, we can have a better understanding of the patient’s home routine and motivation to keep up with oral hygiene, snacking habits and stress-induced habits,” Dr. Marcelo Aquino explains. “Just as important, we can even have an opportunity to be a voice of positivity and listen to a patient talk about their day and reinforce available health resources.”

Dr. Tillman-Mukoro and her team also visit local daycares and elementary schools and provide oral hygiene supplies to educate children on the importance of maintaining proper oral health habits.

Celebrating Extraordinary Performance

We Believe 5 states that, “Quality performance at every job, every day, every hour is required,” and PDS’ recognition programs are our way of thanking everyone for their incredible dedication to delivering extraordinary performance.

Every year, top performers from across the organization are invited to attend the President’s Club, Pinnacle Club and OM Champion’s Club and rewarded with a company-sponsored trip to a beautiful, destination. PDS strives to provide these guests a five-star experience and allow time for pampering, relaxation and collaboration with each other. Each recipient may bring one guest to attend.

This year, more than 170 hardworking extraordinary performers and their spouses/ guests were invited to relax with fellow team members at the President’s Club trip in Cabo San Lucas, the Pinnacle Club trip in Turks & Caicos and the OM Champion’s Club in Dana Point, Calif.

In between rest and relaxation at President’s Club, the topics of providing patient-centric care and mentorship came up often among clinicians. As they celebrated one another, many reflected over the true meanings of leadership and shared what they enjoyed most about their experiences.

What are the Incentive Clubs?

President’s Club Hosted by PDS Founder and CEO Steve Thorne, this is awarded to topperforming dentists (owner, associate, pediatric ODs and specialists) and regional partners nominated for the Region of the Year award during the previous year.

Pinnacle Club Awarded to regional managers and directors in two categories based on top NOI % and highest % over budgeted NOI dollars. They must also manage six or more offices for the entire year to qualify for participation. Selected regional and national support team members are awarded an invitation to this event as well.

OM Champion’s Club Awarded to the top 72 operations and pediatric managers whose offices have achieved 3% top line, 5% bottom line year-over-year growth and have worked in the office at least six months of the year. There are five categories overall: 4+ years, 2-4 years, 0-2 years, pediatric dentistry and total NOI dollars.

On Saturday, Nov. 11, over 150 PDS-supported dentists, hygienists and medical providers attended the Mouth-Body Connection Symposium at National Support Center in Irvine, Calif. The event was designed to educate PDS-supported clinicians and providers about the latest clinical and technological advancements related to oral-systemic health.

Founder and CEO Stephen Thorne set the tone by framing the current state and future of the Mouth-Body Connection (MBC) in dentistry.

Dr. Carolyn Ghazal, Chair of GP Platform Development and multi-practice owner dentist discussed why the mindset of dentists must shift to include a focus on patients’ overall health. Following Dr. Ghazal, various PDS-supported owner dentists shared their personal stories with the MBC. Neusha Najafi, DDS, shared a powerful story of her experience as a patient and how an OralDNA Labs test had a significant impact on her life. Ali Shahrestani, DMD, member of the National Clinical Council and Regional Clinical Partner, shared how he was able to help a patient with HbA1c testing.

Multi-practice Owner Dentist Deepika Dhama, DDS, MBC subject matter expert for PDS and member of the National Clinical Council, shared how aMMP-8 testing benefited one of her patient’s lives and led an activity where attendees were able to personally complete an OralFitnessCheck test.

Medical Director for the Prevention Center for Heart and Brain Health and Co-Founder of the BaleDoneen Method Amy Doneen, DNP, discussed the overlap of arterial health with oral health. She also touched on the benefits of oral health care providers collaborating with medical providers to support patients in achieving optimal health.

Following Dr. Doneen’s presentation was a keynote presentation on aMMP-8 and OralFitnessCheck tests by Dirk- Rolf Gieselmann, chairman at Dentognostics AG. Other esteemed PDS-supported MBC subject matter experts shared their implementation and workflow of different tests to guide patients in pursuit of optimal oral health.

By mid-afternoon, Drs. Dhama, Shahrestani and Joan To, DDS, discussed salivary and blood testing and implementation with a focus on aMMP-8, salivary diagnostics and HbA1c testing, including how to implement testing within their practices, sharing the benefits of testing with patients and overcoming patient objections.

Service That Runs Deep Why We Serve The PDS Foundation is focused on expanding access to oral health care for some of the most underserved populations.

Because of your commitment to the Pacific Dental Services Foundation (PDSF), we are able to provide programming that not only expands access to care, but also aims to make lasting change in communities locally, nationally and internationally.

We do this because we know that improving overall health starts with improving oral health. Through these programs we help ensure everyone can access care, regardless of their circumstances or abilities. We could not do this without the dedicated PDS team members who help bring oral health to more people.

of patients is also severely underserved when it comes to oral health.

According to the California Dental Association, there are just 14 dental schools and surgery centers that train in special needs dentistry. Often the wait time for treatment can be more than a year.

This makes the work we do at the PDSF Special Needs Dentistry Program so important. We’ve seen the relief families feel when they know that a loved one is being treated by dentists and clinicians who are capable and eager to provide care.

This year, PDSF has been focused on building partnerships and listening to our communities and exploring potential partnerships with UCLA School of Dentisty, University of the Pacific, Special Olympics Arizona, Special Olympics Southern California, Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center and Autism Speaks, UCLA School of Dentistry, Children’s Hospital of Orange County Thompson Center for Autism, Autism Treatment Center in Dallas, and many others so that we can reach more families in need of care while also helping dentists and clinicians learn more about treating patients with special needs.

Supporting the Next Generation of Dental Assistants Similarly, our focus on strengthening the pipeline of dental assistants is rooted in the idea that without great staff, our dental offices cannot provide quality oral health care.

We know many dental offices are grappling with a staffing shortage.

In 2022, the American Dental Association found that 4 in 10 dental practices were recruiting or had recently recruited dental assistants and the vast majority of offices found recruiting for the position to be extremely difficult.

This year, 34 PDS team members gave their time to visit Clínica Dental in Xenacoj, Guatemala. According to the World Health Organization, there is one licensed dentist per 100,000 people in Guatemala. Meanwhile, the average daily diet includes 120 grams of sugar, creating a dire need for both oral health care and oral health education in the country.

For many students, a dental assistant role is part of the journey, not a destination. PDSF is committed to giving the power of education to students at the beginning of their journey to help them achieve a rewarding career in oral health. This year, we awarded 49 students scholarships for a total of $213,947. Since the program’s inception, we’ve provided $1.4 million in scholarships to help create a stronger and more stable future for dentistry.

A central goal of our trips is to build trust in the local health system. Instead of waiting for PDSF’s donated care, we want patients to seek out their local office when they need it. This helps create greater stability for patients and clinicians alike.

• In October, more than 1,158 PDS-supported clinicians, team members, families and friends walked, ran, rolled and strolled 3589.8 miles in the fourth annual PDSF Stroll for Special Needs 5K. That’s enough to walk from Seattle to Miami.

Discover how PDS clinical leaders introduce overall health into the oral health conversation with patients.

Including the Mouth-Body Connection (MBC) as part of the conversation when interacting with patients is essential in executing the Perfect Patient Experience.

For many PDS-supported clinicians, the MBC serves as the foundation of care and helps simplify how they communicate with patients, resulting in increased case acceptance and a stronger clinical culture.

Introducing the MBC does not require much in the way of time or semantics. In fact, most patients seem to understand that the state and health of the oral cavity directly affects the health of their body. But for patients to fully embrace the MBC to act and accept treatment depends on how the clinician presents the topic.

“I begin the conversation with a comprehensive review of the patient’s medical and family history,” said Ashley Spooner, DDS, D. ABDSM, owner dentist of Falcon Park Dental Group (Office 517). “Each patient is treated individually and there is no one-size-fits-all treatment or conversation, but I’m clear with my patients that my treatment philosophy is to be preventive versus reactive.”

Multi-practice owner dentist Deepika Dhama, DDS, shares that you don’t have to be a physician to begin the conversation. “If you believe in it, the conversation will come naturally. The key is confidence and educating yourself about the MBC.” “Repetition is also key as it allows patients to think, rethink and accept treatment,” added Sarah Oweis, DMD, owner dentist of Union Village Modern Dentistry (Office 324). “It’s important the entire team is on the same page about the MBC. If patients are hearing it from everyone in the office, they’re more likely to accept treatment.”

Tech to Keep Up With the Shifting Tides PDS is deploying new applications and tools in offices across the country to help clinicians streamline their workflow.

DAVID BAKER Chief Information and Digital Officer, SVP, Technology Dentists of Richmond (Office 219) going live on DTX In the infamous words of Chief Brody in “Jaws”: We’re going to need a bigger boat. But by boat, we mean technology that can keep up with PDS’ innovation in oral health care.

Just as important as the research and data about the MouthBody Connection are the technology and tools that are paired with them. As the link between oral health and overall health deepens — and as we move closer to dental-medical integration — we need tools that will enhance our excellence in care and help provide an unprecedented level of tailored treatment while making diagnosing and treating periodontal disease easier.

That’s why PDS is proud to be deploying Envista’s DTX Studio Clinic software in offices all over the country to help dentists and clinicians diagnose and treat patients faster and easier than ever before. DTX centralizes data so that 2D and 3D X-rays can be completed using one application. The results and feedback from clinicians so far is overwhelming.

“DTX is already benefiting our practice,” said Smita Kadakia, DDS. “The diagnosis program is helping us operate more efficiently so that we can deliver more personalized care to patients. I’m looking forward to seeing the other ways DTX can strengthen our daily operations while streamlining our processes.”

Dentists report exceptional improvements in workflow as DTX manages image settings, deletion and image transfers without the need for IT tickets. And DTX’s integrated tooth

numbering and tooth chart features are a favorite of dental assistants to help simplify the process of capturing X-rays.

DTX is deployed in roughly 50% of offices with full deployment expected by early next year. PDS offers technical support for the first two days of DTX installation with another follow-up call one week later.

The AI capabilities of DTX — which are still to come — will be especially valuable. The application will be able to detect six pathologies in dental scans, which could be especially valuable for dentists who might not be as confident diagnosing X-rays.

PDS is still testing the AI technology but hopes to incorporate AI recommendations into patients’ health records automatically in Epic, creating potential for even more efficiencies in diagnosis and treatment.

Introducing Sherpa DTX isn’t the only new tool in town. Sherpa similarly aims to make the lives of PDS-supported clinicians easier while providing unprecedented insight to patients.

Sherpa was born out of the innovative salivary and blood tests that PDS began piloting years ago. The chairside HbA1c test measures average blood sugar levels and is designed to help dentists better identify and assess if patients are having potential glucose issues that can affect treatment outcomes and to bridge the gap between dental and medical care. The ultimate goal is awareness and glucose control with their medical provider.

Since 8 out of 10 of the leading causes of death in America can be linked to inflammation and bad bacteria in the mouth, these point-of-care tests can help identify and prevent chronic conditions like Alzheimer’s, dementia, cardiovascular disease, diabetes or a high-risk pregnancy.

The simplicity of the Sherpa Dashboard (see image above) helps visually demonstrate why these tests are important and why treating these conditions is vital to preventing further illness. Since many medical doctors haven’t been trained on the Mouth-Body Connection, Sherpa serves as an especially valuable tool to help create deeper understanding and trust between clinicians and patients.

Sherpa can also show historical health data so a patient can see how they are trending over time. Color levels help identify the urgency behind each condition and treatment. Sherpa is currently in the experimental phase and is being used in five offices before it moves into alpha and beta testing.

As we see the tides shifting toward dental-medical integration we need the tools that allow PDS-supported clinicians to deliver excellent care while making their daily work easier. The latest innovations from DTX and Sherpa will help build on this reality.

PDS Congratulates New ODs The National Support Center welcomed new owner dentists Oct. 6-7 for two days of clinical and operational development and fun.

In October 2023, PDS welcomed 45 new owner dentists (OD) including six pediatric owner dentists, one orthodontic owner dentist and four regional partners from across the country for the fall New Owner Orientation held at the National Support Center in Irvine, Calif. Carolyn Ghazal, DDS, Chair of GP Platform Development and the GP Platform team along with key subject matter experts led and facilitated the meeting.

The energy in PDS University was positive and uplifting. There was a palpable spirit of engagement as the ODs shared their excitement learning the standards of the platform and sharing their best practices in execution. This was a key step in their development as clinical leaders as it will enable them to support their teams in clinical excellence.

Day one of the event began with a presentation on OD financial fundamentals with Chief Financial Officer Taylor Hawes followed by a Q & A with Founder and CEO Stephen Thorne focused on clinical, business and leadership aspects of OD development.

Drs. Ghazal and Alex Sharifian, DDS, MS, Chair of Owner Dentist Development, discussed how to leverage a strong clinical culture to align with the clinical team and drive the performance of the practice. Later in the day, Regional Clinical Partner Diana Do-Yabut, DMD, shared how to assess and onboard associate dentists. PDS subject matter expert for the Mouth-Body Connection Deepika Dhama, DDS, closed out the day with an informative talk on how to build a successful hygiene culture.

In the evening, the clinicians enjoyed dinner and social time with the presenters, members of the Clinical Council and the regional clinical partners.

The second day began with a recap of the key takeaways from the previous day and framing of the day’s agenda. Dr. Dhama started the day off by speaking to the ODs about the structure of integrating specialties into their practices to support comprehensive care. Dave Bryant, VP of Operations Support, presented a robust discussion focused on improving financial acumen. The remainder of the day was focused on tax planning presented by Jim Wilde, Director of Tax. Since the start of the year, 56 owner dentists have been onboarded and an estimated 20 more will have joined PDS by the end of the year. The next new owner dentist orientation will take place in February 2024.

A self-taught surfer and surfboard shaper, Stephen Mercier has been shaping surfboards for his surf community for the past 10 years. Whether designing PDS Life magazine (another creative talent of Stephen’s) or crafting a surfboard, he views design as just another way to solve problems.

“Shaping surfboards has allowed me to become a better surfer because I get to know the ‘why.’ I’ve always liked the hard way and learning how to make the surf experience better is just half the fun,” the San Clemente, Calif. local said.

With CAD/CAM software, surfboard shaping by hand has become a dying art. But for the designer, this art has reignited his love for the sport. “It’s truly a satisfying feeling to experience the rush of surfing on equipment that you made by hand. There’s an unexplainable pride in that.”

Since age 12, Stephen has navigated the ebb and flow of the ocean’s rhythms. “Now, you have various surf classes and camps to teach you how to get on the board. Back then, you just had to go out, fall and learn how to get back up,” Stephen said.

He shares that his favorite surfing memory is when his daughter caught her first wave. “As a dad and surfer, it was a surreal moment for me to see my own daughter catch a wave.”

Humberto Briceno

“Food has always followed me,” Humberto Briceno said with a chuckle. Raised by restaurant owners, cooking is the center of his Venezuelan family. By blending his love for social media and food, Humberto has created the perfect fusion of his two passions.

In May of this year, Humberto went from 1,000 Instagram followers to a whopping 10,000 overnight on his account @berto_eats. What led to his overnight following?

Humberto created a video reacting to a restaurant employee who dropped her phone in the fryer (yep, we had the same horrified look on our faces). Humberto’s video progressed to 22.7 million views, 743,000 likes and 1,295 comments and is still receiving engagement from new followers until this day.

When asked why he decided to film a reaction video, he paid homage to his Italian Venezuelan roots. “We’re people that are very expressive and use a lot of facial expressions when we communicate, so it makes sense that these are the types of videos I enjoy creating.”

Currently at 74.4k followers, Humberto always knew he had a passion for creating community through social media. As a PDS recruiter, Humberto has utilized what he’s learned from his social media success through his recruitment on LinkedIn. “Whether it be putting a smile on someone’s face through an Instagram reel or being a part of someone’s career milestone, it’s a privilege to have an impact on people’s lives,” Humberto said.

So, what is the secret ingredient to going viral?

Humberto shared that with anything in life, you have to have both patience and consistency.

Tooth Talk: When ASL Meets Dentistry Sophie Schmitz Assistant Manager // Dentists of Eden Prairie (Office 882) Minnesota Region

In the tapestry of human interaction, effective communication is the thread that weaves people together.

Compassion and sign language goes a long way — sometimes all the way to the next appointment.

Sophie Schmitz’ ASL journey started in 9th grade during a track meet. As she crossed the finish line, a friend from another school who was deaf, cheered her on — and she would do the same for him. After the race, he invited her to his prom. But being in the 9th grade, she was unable to attend.

“I wanted to say thank you.

This really inspired me to learn.”

Sophie delved into formal ASL classes in college. The classes, led by deaf instructors, provided an immersive and unique learning environment. A no speaking zone, communication was solely through signing.

Working at a faculty clinic, Sophie recalled an impactful experience she had when a patient with hearing impairment arrived for oral medicine assistance.

Her ability to communicate through ASL brought comfort and tears of relief to the patient. Even though she was only a student assistant, she showcased the vital role sign language can play in health care accessibility.

“I don’t expect everyone to come in and speak English.

Everyone deserves communication and to be heard.”

Reflecting on her experiences, Sophie encourages others in the office to learn — and she’s available if team members have questions.

“Even if you’re not fluent but learn a couple signs and try, you’re not going to offend anyone. This establishes the point you want to communicate with them and you care about them.”

Fire Up the Imagination Christopher Smith Operations Manager // Cottage Grove Smiles Dentistry (Office 1081) // Midwest Region

Draw a card and enter the imaginative world of Chris Smith. He stands as a visionary creator, charting galactic conquests with his trading card game Seize the Imperium. The inception of this ambitious endeavor sparked from his deep-rooted love for scifi and strategic gameplay. Magic: The Gathering, a fantasy-based collectible card game, had long captivated him, but the absence of a sci-fi variant left an indelible mark on his imagination.

Chris meticulously began crafting his universe in 2018.

Enlisting the aid of friends, they curated a master list of cards resulting in about 300 distinct cards that define planets and the intricate mechanics that would imbue the game with complexity and intrigue. The mission: Firing up the imagination.

“I always saw my game as more of a sandbox. I’ve always wanted it to be what I put into it and how the players can take it to the next level for themselves.”

Chris’s vision materialized into a narrative-rich universe where players vie for galactic dominion. Their objective is to amass victory points by acquiring and defending planets, navigating a delicate balance of strategy and politics.

He aspired to foster a sense of community and regular social interaction among players, similar to the cherished memories from his own gaming experiences. Through it, he invites fellow enthusiasts to embark on a journey through the galaxy, unfolding tales of conquest and camaraderie that endure beyond the playing table.

“The biggest impact is bringing people together on a regular basis — that’s what I really wanted.”

The Filipina American Dream: Desire for Education Rodessa Kraus Operations Manager // Hopkins Crossroads Dentistry (Office 799) // Minnesota Region

Hard work and education have been two key principles for Rodessa Kraus.

Born and raised in Tarlac, Philippines, Rodessa jumped through various hurdles to receive her college education. Whether it was walking five miles to get to school, being unable to afford lunch or wearing ragged clothes to class, Rodessa’s life battles have lit a fire within her to pay it forward to youth facing the same adversities.

As a board member of the L.A Henderson Scholarship Program, Rodessa and a team of women help Filipino college students with financial aid for school. Through organized charity events like the Minnesota Kentucky Derby and a Back-to-School Bash, the nonprofit is currently supporting 11 Filipino scholars by providing school supplies, lunches and transportation to school. She proudly shared that two of their students recently received magna cum laude and secured a spot on the Dean’s List.

“I was a hungry kid who was hungry for success.”

—Rodessa Kraus Reflecting on her experiences, she wouldn’t have had it any other way. “I’m proud of what I have sacrificed, where I currently am and who I have become,” Rodessa said. “That little girl who was poor wouldn’t believe the things that she would be blessed with later in life.”

She recounts her late father’s advice, shaping her into the woman she is today: “Education is one of the most vital gifts in life. But you must work hard for it. Once you receive that gift, no one can ever take it away from you.” Living out this principle, Rodessa is committed to sharing the gift of education.

The Art of Floral-telling Beatriz Adame Operations Manager // PDS Foundation Dentists for Special Needs (Office 389)

By day, she’s giving a patient their desired smile; by night, she weaves wedding dreams into reality. Beatriz has created her own bouquet of flowers of life, adorning it with smiles and love.

Her journey began with a single bloom—a tiny seedling of, “Everything I do, I do with my heart.” With immense gratitude and a resilient attitude, she embarked on the journey of wedding planning in 2016, Beatriz Events. Then opened her own floral shop last year.

To her, flowers are more than mere decorations; they hold the power to infuse life’s most cherished moments with an unforgettable experience. And as a wedding planner, she stands as a crucial supporting character in her clients’ love story. This year, she planned 32 weddings – with more stories to come.

But it’s not just about her clients’ stories. It’s also her own.

Her eldest son has a rare autoinflammatory condition called CANDLE syndrome, there are only 60 known cases.

With a desire to raise awareness, she and her husband, who met at PDS, founded Bee a Helping Hand.

“If we can be a voice for the ones who cannot be heard, we will continue being a voice.”

Beatriz stands as a living testament that with dedication, gratitude and an unwavering passion for what you do, dreams do come true. Every floral arrangement, every wedding she plans, is a testament to a life guided by the heart.

Brass, Beats and Boldness: The Musical Odyssey Grover Castro Tiburcio Specialty Healthcare Coordinator Dentists of South Pasadena (Office 426) North Los Angeles Region

“For 90 minutes, we get to bring a piece of home to them.”

In the vibrant world of mariachi music, where lively melodies and spirited rhythms narrate tales of culture and life, an exceptional trumpeter breathes life into every note. Meet Grover Castro.

From South L.A., his love for music was nurtured by the soul-stirring melodies passed down through generations on his maternal side of the family. At 13, he joined the John Muir Middle School band, eventually performing gigs with his relatives by 8th grade and furthering his musical education at the esteemed Alexander Hamilton High School Academy of Music.

Cal State Northridge marked the crescendo of his mariachi journey. He was invited to play gigs in his friend’s band traveling from South L.A. to Oxnard every weekend.

At the heart of mariachi is adaptability. Transitioning from a joyous baptism to honoring a solemn funeral, it’s about embracing diverse moments and creating a space for them to remember pieces of home.

His talent didn’t just capture the hearts of the local audience. Soon, he found himself touring with iconic artists like Leo Dan, Paquita La Del Barrio, Shaila Durcal and Angela Aguilar across 16 states. Notable appearances include Camila Cabello’s Tiny Desk performance of “La Buena Vida.“ Grover currently plays for Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuellar under the direction of Jimmy Cuellar, a three-time Grammy winner. His journey plays on.

Wave Makers In October, PDS celebrated National Dental Hygiene Month (NDHM). Dental hygienists play an integral role in the early detection and treatment of periodontal pathogens, inflammation control and long-term disease management. Many times, it is the hygienist who first helps educate patients about the importance of blood pressure control, oral cancer screenings and risks associated with sleep apnea. Beyond this important work, dental hygienists also serve as a source of comfort for anxious patients and a friend at the chairside. In recognition of NDHM, we honored our dental hygienists across the country on social media and through celebratory recognitions and treats.

While October may be the dedicated month to honor this critical role, it’s the work they do year-round to create healthier, happier patients that is the real accomplishment.

In August, team members across the country joined forces to make a lasting impact in their communities for the 13th Annual Smile Generation Serve Day. Together, we provided more than $10.6 million in donated dentistry to over 3,500 patients through national partnerships with Dental Lifeline Network, After Innocence and the Freedom Child Foundation among others.

As the saying goes, Viva Las Vegas! Brenda and Raul treated themselves to an exhilarating time of adventure and new experiences. As Brenda and her fiancé currently pursue their educational goals (Fun fact: Brenda is enrolled in the PDS College Advancement Program), this romantic trip to the Strip was their perfect escape.

The Happiest Date on Earth For Johnny and Ana Francisco, assistant manager (Office 1022), the happiest moment of their lives happened to be at the Happiest Place on Earth. Johnny had originally planned to propose to Ana later in the year but realized that this date was the perfect opportunity, “I couldn’t wait any longer or for any more months,” said Johnny. Planted at Snow White’s Wishing Well, Johnny got down on one knee and proposed to Ana. After moving to HSC and buying a home in Henderson together, both Johnny and Ana are grateful to have shared some of their life milestones with their PDS Family.

Future Moms & Dads Program Future Moms (and Dads) is a free supplemental program through Anthem that can answer your questions, help you make good choices and follow your health care provider’s plan of care.

All team members who are enrolled in a PDS medical plan are eligible to participate in this program and are encouraged to sign up as soon as you receive the news that you’re expecting.

After giving birth and completing the post-partum assessment,

While the pandemic undoubtedly exacerbated the country’s mental health challenges, PDS knows how important it is to support a healthy mind and spirit, which is why we’re expanding our mental health offerings by partnering with Calm, the number one app for sleep, meditation and relaxation.

We are excited to introduce a new program with Anthem called Building Healthy Families. It is an expansion of the Future Moms and Dads program and provides personalized digital support and real-time interactive support from contraception and family planning through pregnancy, delivery, postpartum care and early childhood up to the first five years of development. This program walks alongside your current healthcare team to support your journey.

Sometimes referred to as “leaking gut,” your digestive health and its related conditions go beyond bloating and brain fog. Gut issues can have more significant symptoms such as sleep disturbances, unexplained fatigue, autoimmune diseases, thyroid conditions and serious diagnoses of ulcerative colitis, IBD and IBS, to name a few. Clearly your gut health can have a significant impact on your overall health and happiness. In fact, the gut is often called the second brain.

While Calm has a free version that anyone can download, PDS is providing team members with access to Calm’s paid subscription service. Calm has a wide range of offerings from meditations that help you fall asleep to gratitude journals, stress management sessions, expert-led workshops and more. With this benefit, PDS team members can also include up to five users so you and your family can enjoy the benefits of the app together. The Calm app is now available for team members. Building Healthy Families is designed around the concept that every family is unique and every maternity journey has varying goals or needs. The program helps new and experienced parents log feedings, diaper changes and developmental milestones and offer lactation support and other postpartum resources. It also includes resources for single-parent households and working parents.

Knowing the physical and psychological connection, PDS is exploring innovative solutions and partners to better support team members with their digestive health. We plan to share more as we move further along on this journey. In the meantime, if you are experiencing complex or severe digestive health issues, you can contact the Anthem Health Guide Customer Service team (at the toll-free # on your Anthem ID card) and ask to be referred to an Anthem Nurse Case Manager to help you navigate your plan benefits and find a medical specialist who can assist you with proper diagnosis and treatment plans.

Participants in the program have tremendous outcomes with over 95% success rate of healthy full term, full weight babies.

We are excited to introduce this new program in January 2024. Building Healthy Families will complement our suite of family benefits such as our back-up care through Bright Horizons, dependent care flexible spending account (FSA), employee assistance and wellness program through New York Life, our infertility benefit through Anthem which includes in vitro or IVF and our adoption assistance reimbursement policy.

These new programs and offerings reflect PDS’ commitment to align benefit offerings with the needs of PDS team members. DENTAL HYGIENE

Riding the Wave Towards the Future of Dental Hygiene Looking beneath the surface and into the future of oral health care.

Dentistry is experiencing a sea change and its influence is becoming increasingly stronger. If you go beneath the surface, you’ll find a world of wonder with an ecosystem teeming with life. Molecular dentistry can be thought of in a similar fashion. To the naked eye, things may look normal on the surface, but deep down lies a complex network of simultaneous micro-events that trigger a much greater response throughout the body. Pathogens such as Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) can worsen due to the pending storm brewing beneath.

As technology continues to evolve, so does our ability to see beneath the surface. In the past we relied on radiograph images to tell us what has already happened, leading to reactive dentistry. Today, we can see clearly below the surface and into the future through biomarker screening.

One of these biomarkers, active matrix metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8) detects collagen I and II breakdown before clinical evidence of destruction is seen, even radiographically. But to be seen, we must open our eyes to what the future of oral health care looks like.

PDS is an industry leader in dental-medical integration. The organization has become the reference point for strategic partners and associations to catch a glimpse of what the next era of oral health care looks like within the United States and abroad.

In July, PDS hosted the first-ever Future of Oral Healthcare Pavilion at the American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s annual conference in Chicago, Ill. This immersive event was geared towards demonstrating, teaching and providing an interactive experience for dental hygienists and oral health care providers to understand where the industry is headed.

Our partners from Epic, OralDNA Labs, Dentognostics, Ultradent, American Academy of Periodontology, Siemans and OraPharma were in attendance.

PDS-supported clinicians and dental hygienists are leading the industry on the integration of such technologies. This year we are expected to exceed 40,000 OralDNA Labs tests.

As biomarker screening continues to help us see below the surface, we are shifting from reactive dentistry to preventive care.

In September, key dental industry leaders from around the world gathered at the 8th Interdisciplinary Congress on Prevention-Oriented Medicine, Dentistry and Dental Hygiene in Cologne, Germany. The interdisciplinary forum bridges medicine and dentistry together to offer sustainability for better oral-systemic health outcomes at the highest level.

The vast landscape of global leaders discussed the critical importance on periodontal disease, inflammatory disease, implant maintenance and pathogenic prevention and the critical role molecular technology plays in earlier detection, especially in the hands of dental hygienists.

The Story of One Team Member’s Career Journey Trust, passion and excellence: A look into Stephanie’s path from dental assistant to manager of territory revenue operations Stephanie has a motto – trust, but verify. Trust what you’re told. Trust what you’re taught. But verify that trust has standing.

In life, business and dentistry, trust is everything.

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nev., Stephanie was drawn to the city’s entertainment, events and the arts, earning a bachelor’s degree in photography. It wasn’t until a conversation with her dad she considered the dental field one of intrigue. A father’s nudge led to dental assisting school, soon placing her at a PDS-supported practice where she advanced from intern to full-time dental assistant (DA).

Building connections with patients felt natural, almost easy. In Stephanie’s words, “Being able to assist the dentist in aiding someone’s life-long health while making the care financially affordable met a core value of mine.” She found her passion — a passion for people and progress, and that passion was noticed.

She was offered an operations manager (OM) role and before long was promoted to OM2. Cathie Wild-Pappas, regional partner, Nevada region, was massively influential in Stephanie’s growth, encouraging self-empowerment and confirming Stephanie had the ability to progress with PDS if her drive matched the ability.

“My favorite thing about PDS is the opportunity. I knew I could always try something new and hone what I like to do, what I’m good at, then apply it to a position within the company. There’s incredible flexibility,” said Stephanie.

ORLANDO SANCHEZ Regional Specialty Back Office Manager Gulf Coast Region Q: What are some of your top career highlights here at PDS? A: I wouldn’t be in my position without mentors alongside me. Joanna Rodgers and Dr. Charles Rodgers were the first to help and support my growth here at PDS. Abundant opportunities were offered from the beginning. I started as a dental assistant, grew to lead dental assistant, then became one of the first traveling specialty assistants in PDS. As the specialty department grew, I worked with other assistants showing interest in specialty and started training and developing new teams.

I make it a priority to share the time, opportunities, growth and development that was given to me with others around PDS. Thank you to all I have had the opportunity to work with and cheers to many more years of success.

JESSICA GURTIZA Sr. Analyst, ROC Quality Assurance Dallas Support Center Q: At PDS, we believe team members should own their development. What advice would you give to team members on how to do that?

A: My advice is to look for opportunities within PDS amongst different teams and departments if you are looking for a change in your role, responsibilities or scenery. Another role within the company may be a better fit for what you’re wanting or offer more advancement potential. I worked in a dental office for over 16 years, then switched to a position in the ROC department and within ROC, I’ve had multiple jobs on different teams. It’s wonderful to have the flexibility and opportunity to pivot positions within PDS as seasons of life change or to better align with your personal goals.

MARIO ORTEGA Lead Dental Assistant Orange County Region Q: What have you enjoyed most working at PDS? A: I started with PDS from almost the beginning.

Seeing the company grow, especially within the dental technology space, has helped me grow as a professional, too. The opportunities and experiences have been bountiful and I’m grateful for everything.

Pacific Dental Services has a long tradition of recognizing extraordinary performance across the organization at its annual XP Awards celebration. But we can’t thank and recognize team members and clinicians who go above and beyond without your help.

How to submit an XP Award Nomination Please visit pdsxp.com to submit your nomination(s) and explain why the team member you’re nominating is extraordinary. Make sure to detail the behaviors they’ve demonstrated and highlight the results they’ve achieved.

Winners will be celebrated during the XP Awards Ceremony at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, April 19-21, 2024. The deadline to submit nominations is midnight (PST), Jan. 7, 2024. You may submit a maximum of five nominations.

What are the XP Awards?

The Extraordinary Performance (XP) Program recognizes exceptional behaviors and actions of team members, both hourly and salaried, who contribute to achieving the PDS Mission and embody our We Believes. All team members may nominate another colleague who they feel exemplify these behaviors.
