The Power of X is helping people live healthier lives through the care we provide, the teams we grow, and the communities we serve. “ ”
At XP Gala 2025, we came together to recognize extraordinary achievements across PDS Health. This annual event honors those who go above and beyond in service to their patients, their teams and our mission. But this year, the theme “The Power of X” carries a deeper meaning. It reflects a pivotal moment as we begin a new chapter focused on transforming how health care is delivered and experienced.
The Power of X represents the mindset we need as we move forward. It is about the eXperience we create — not only for our patients, but also for our talented team members who dedicate themselves to clinical and operational excellence every day. It is about how we eXpand with purpose, using our platform to reach new communities and connect oral health with overall health. Most of all, it is about our shared commitment to being eXceptional, both individually and together.
This is more than a shift in language. It reflects a transformation in how we view ourselves and the role we play in health care. We are evolving into a fully integrated health care support organization, one that brings dentists, medical providers and technology together to offer patients more coordinated, personalized and preventive care.
Our model is built on decades of experience in growing successful dental practices. But what comes next will require new thinking, stronger collaboration and a clear focus on whole-person care. That includes innovations like saliva screening and diagnostics, using data to drive better outcomes and centering the Mouth-Body Connection® in everyday practice.
We will continue to grow, but not for growth’s sake. Every step forward must be rooted in our purpose. That means making sure our teams have what they need to thrive, and our patients have access to care that helps them live longer, healthier and happier lives.
As we take on this next phase of our journey, I’m reminded that our longevity — as individuals, teams and as an organization — depends on the experience we deliver and the expectations we uphold. Together, we have the opportunity to shape something truly transformational.
The Power of X is helping people live healthier lives through the care we provide, the teams we grow and the communities we serve.
As you read through this issue of PDS Life, you’ll find stories that reflect The Power of X in action. From clinicians transforming lives through the Mouth-Body Connection, to teams driving growth in new markets, to behind-the-scenes innovators advancing technology and patient care, this issue highlights the extraordinary people shaping our future. I hope you see your own impact reflected in these pages.
Thank you for continuing to lead with purpose and helping us build something extraordinary.
Here’s to your health and happiness,

We are at the precipice of an especially exciting time in health care. As PDS Health Founder and CEO Stephen Thorne has said many times, “We are at the beginning of the ‘Golden Age of Dentistry,’” which will include a convergence of oral health and other primary care in the U.S. and global healthcare systems. Whether it be television, social media, podcasts or scientific journals, there’s a clear and growing awareness of the connection between oral health and overall health, which is increasing demand for more coordinated, patient-centric care.
Decades of reactive, siloed treatment has made patients sicker and increased costs. PDS Health’s model is rooted in changing this dynamic. With more than 1,000 offices across the country, we offer high-quality, convenient affordable access. Our clinicians are the first line of defense against disease and are well-positioned to bridge the gap that exists between patients and their primary care providers.
Looking ahead to the next 10 years of our growth, we have the potential to reach millions as we work across the care continuum to improve overall population health. This is a new challenge, but we are in a unique position to achieve it. With the help of our talented team, we can create more than 100 million healthier, happier patients.
We are at the beginning of the ‘Golden Age of Dentistry.’ “ ”
- Stephen Thorne
Over the next 10 years, three powerful shifts will reshape health care and define the opportunities ahead for PDS Health.
1. Accelerating awareness of the Mouth-Body Connection ®
Awareness of the Mouth-Body Connection will increase every day. As more people recognize the link between oral health and overall health, there will be greater demand for dentalmedical integrated models. These models help patients, together with their oral health providers, better understand and manage chronic and systemic disease.
2. A new wave of predictive and preventive technologies
Saliva science, AI, genomics and machine learning are unlocking earlier detection and more personalized care. These tools will allow patients and clinicians to predict, identify and even prevent certain diseases — shifting care from reactive to proactive.
3. A rapidly aging population with complex health needs
By 2034, adults aged 65 and older will outnumber children under 18 in the U.S. for the first time in history (U.S. Census Bureau). This group represents the highest users of both dental and medical services and often experiences the most chronic inflammation. Meeting their needs requires seamless, coordinated care across disciplines.
To meet these challenges head-on and realize the opportunity ahead, we must create a clinical and operationally integrated environment where primary healthcare providers and their patients can get a holistic view of their health. We are in the right position to encourage this kind of preventive, integrated care. Our clinicians have seen first-hand how patients’ attitudes change when they are put in the driver’s seat of their own health.
PDS Health has always been an early adopter of proven technologies. We were the first to go fully digital on a large scale; the first to adopt CEREC; the first to bring the power of Epic to neighborhood dental practices, and we are the first to bring a point-of-care saliva screening device to the U.S. market as we lead in dental-medical integration. And while all of those innovations were smart, strategic decisions, that is not our secret to success.
Indeed, our secret is no secret. As Steve reminds us, “We are operators manically focused on achieving the highest clinician and patient satisfaction in the industry. Our success at operating practices that continually and consistently experience profitable same-practice growth is the engine that drives everything.”
As we set out on this journey, we have three main areas of focus to achieve our goal:
The PDS Health ownership model allows us to stay ahead of the competition. We will continue to invest in this model, giving owner-clinicians the tools and support to build profitable, growing practices, strengthened by a strong territory and regional partnership model that allows us to offer an unprecedented level of operational excellence across thousands of neighborhood practices.
Smile Generation ® will strengthen into a nationally celebrated brand helping patients get the integrated care they want and need.
Furthermore, our structure and our culture that champions high performance is another key to our success. We will continue to empower people to build extraordinary careers and businesses, where success is realized through individual commitment and a dedicated team effort. We will remain committed to continuously evolving and improving our training and development so that our team members continue to grow.
We believe that dental-medical integration presents a massive opportunity to create more value. While we have opened new medical and co-located practices as well as launched joint ventures, we still have work to do to advance our role in the medical space.
As the leader in the Mouth-Body Connection (MBC), we will develop a new model of primary health care built on a national network of patient-focused, dental-medical integrated practices that use Epic to coordinate patient care. We will help people with diabetes lower their A1c levels. We will help patients predisposed to cardiovascular disease or Alzheimer’s disease take preventive measures to avoid these chronic diseases altogether. We will help women have better pregnancies. In short, we will help patients live healthier lives while lowering their healthcare costs.
Finally, we must focus on areas in need of improvement, including increasing team member retention, enhancing our training to make it a competitive differentiator as we scale up and transforming under-performing offices so that we can focus on what’s working.
Over the next 10 years, we see great potential for monumental growth. When expressed in numbers, the opportunity before us is clear. This future, however, is not predestined. We must transform the way in which we work. We must partner with our clinicians to continually elevate the PDS Health team member experience, the Perfect Patient Experience® and the definition of clinical excellence. If we do, over the next 10 years, we will:
• Serve over 100 million patients
• Support nearly 15,000 clinicians
• Welcome more than 40,000 team members
• Support more than 2,500 integrated dental practices and nearly 1,500 medical practices
Reaching this level of impact will require the full strength of our platform. Each of our business units will play a specific and essential role in bringing this vision to life.
Each part of our organization plays a vital role in bringing our 10-year strategy to life:
PDS Health Dental continues to be the foundation of our integrated model. Our dental practices are often the first point of contact for patients, helping identify early signs of disease, deliver preventive care and drive stronger outcomes through trusted relationships and clinical excellence.
PDS Health Medical expands our reach across the care continuum. With co-located and connected primary care practices, we are building a more seamless, whole-person experience that supports healthier, happier patients and lowers long-term costs.
PDS Health Technologies is shaping the next generation of clinicians. Dental students are now training directly on the PDS Health instance of Epic. They are gaining early exposure to integrated, collaborative care and entering practice with a clear understanding that oral health is essential to overall health.
PDS Health Specialties will continue to expand opportunities for dental specialists, allowing us to strengthen our leadership in comprehensive oral healthcare and serve patients with greater depth and expertise.
PDS Health Innovations and PDS Health Investments will ensure our practices have access to the most advanced, proven technologies and scalable systems. Together, these teams will help clinicians adopt new tools that support better care delivery and improved outcomes.
PDS Health Plans will provide patients with access to personalized, preventive care through individualized coverage options. This makes it easier for more people to receive the care they need, when and how they need it.
The PDS Health Foundation will continue to extend our mission into the communities we serve, impacting millions through international service, special needs dentistry, scholarships, and advocacy that changes lives.
This is a bold vision, but with more than three decades of success in integrating dental specialties in more than 1,000 practices, paired with a growing need for care that incorporates the MBC, PDS Health is well positioned to create our integrated care model that incorporates physicians, general dentists, pediatric dentists and other medical professionals to provide a more comprehensive level of care.
To be clear, we will be making a market where one does not currently exist. This will be challenging, but we hold the pieces of the puzzle to create a more seamless, coordinated healthcare experience.
Let us all embrace the challenge and opportunities before us. Let us ensure that over the coming decade, each and every patient is able to enjoy the benefits of the Golden Age of Dentistry, both in their oral and whole-body health.
At PDS Health, everything we do comes back to one simple truth: Healthier, Happier Patients®. That’s not just our purpose — it’s what gets us up every morning and drives every decision we make.
Over the past year, the organization has developed a set of dedicated business units designed to drive innovation, strengthen provider support and expand integrated care across the country. This evolution builds on more than three decades of experience and reflects PDS Health’s continued leadership in redefining how dentistry and primary care work together to improve patient outcomes.
This is our foundation — and after more than 30 years, it’s still the heart of everything we do. We support owner dentists and their teams in over 1,000 dental practices in 24 states through a model built on collaboration, growth and clinical leadership. As one of the largest dental support organizations (DSOs) in the country, PDS Health Dental continues to expand across markets while evolving to meet the demands of a more connected healthcare environment. And increasingly, we’re helping them see the bigger picture of how oral health connects to overall health through the Mouth-Body Connection® (MBC).
When we talk about transforming patients’ health through the MBC, PDS Health Medical is where that vision becomes reality. PDS Health Medical is our medical support organization, focused on expanding access to primary care and building stronger connections between medical and dental care. The team supports independently operated primary care practices with systems, infrastructure and workflows that connect medical and dental insights. This coordination helps providers identify risks earlier, improve continuity and deliver care that reflects the full picture of a patient’s health.
PDS Health Medical currently supports 14 primary care practices under the PDS Medical Group name across Arizona and Nevada, with more locations expected to launch in the coming year.
PDS Health Specialties supports endodontic, periodontic and oral surgery specialists by helping them own and operate their businesses more effectively. This business unit provides operational support, systems and business services to help clinician-led specialty groups focus on delivering care while managing longterm growth. These groups work with PDS Health general dentistry practices to offer comprehensive, collaborative care. For patients, this model means faster access to specialty care and fewer referrals outside the practice.
PDS Health Specialties currently supports eight clinician-led groups operating across seven states, with significant growth anticipated in the coming years.
We’ve spent decades figuring out how to make integrated care actually work. Now, through PDS Health Technologies, we’re sharing those insights with DSOs, health systems, dental schools, and private practices who want to do the same thing.
Whether it’s Epic Community Connect, AI-enabled imaging, or cloud-based infrastructure, we’re helping organizations adopt integrated models, modernize operations and coordinate care more effectively.
PDS Health Technologies serves external customers by offering the same integrated systems and best practices we’ve used within PDS Health, now adapted to meet the needs of other healthcare organizations looking to modernize and grow.
PDS Health Innovations is where we ask, “What if?” What if care could be more predictive? More preventive? More personalized? This team leads product strategy across PDS Health, working to identify, build and scale tools to do just that.
The work spans clinical decision support, population health, remote monitoring and new applications of diagnostic and patient data. Sometimes we build things in-house. Sometimes we partner with external companies. But everything gets tested through our own PDS Health platform first.
By turning ideas into real-world tools, PDS Health Innovations ensures our model keeps evolving and continues to deliver smarter, more connected care.
Through PDS Health Investments, we’re putting our money where our mission is. We identify and support early-stage companies working on integrated, preventive care solutions. In addition to capital, we offer strategic insights and clinical input to help start-ups scale solutions. Because when we help great ideas scale, we’re helping the entire industry move forward.
This business unit also helps PDS Health evaluate and test new technologies, often serving as the launch partner for early-stage innovations. Customers include digital health startups, diagnostics companies and care delivery platforms focused on integrated, preventive solutions.
PDS Health Plans creates dental and medical benefit models that align with how care is delivered across the PDS Health platform. This unit works directly with payors, including commercial insurers, Medicare Advantage plans and employer groups, to design plans that close care gaps, improve access and support coordinated care.
When coverage actually makes sense, providers can focus on patients instead of paperwork. And patients get the care they need without jumping through hoops.
Each business unit has a clear focus and a shared purpose: To support better care through integration. Together, they give PDS Health the structure to grow, adapt and deliver on a model that keeps clinicians and patients at the center.
Nearly 1,600 PDS Health dentists, medical providers, non-clinical team members and guests gathered in Dallas, Texas, for XP Gala 2025. Hosted at the Sheraton Hotel, this year’s event carried the theme “The Power of X,” highlighting the exponential impact of collaboration, innovation and shared purpose across our organization.
XP Gala is more than an annual gathering. It’s a chance to connect, reflect and recognize the people behind our mission to create healthier, happier patients. Over the course of three days, attendees explored new ideas, shared best practices and celebrated those who consistently go above and beyond.
Educational breakout sessions covered a wide range of topics designed to support clinical and operational excellence. Clinicians dove into sessions on saliva screening workflows, implant planning, critical conversations and the use of advanced technology to transform patient care. On the operations side, topics included leadership development, associate success and how to operationalize the Mouth-Body Connection® across practices.
One of the most talked-about moments came during the keynote presentation by Simon Sinek. As a renowned speaker and trained ethnographer, he shared powerful insights about trust and the importance of leading with purpose. His message resonated with the work we do every day across PDS Health.
After two full days of learning, team building and connection, the event closed with what many consider the highlight of the weekend: The XP Gala awards ceremony. From more than 3,500 peer-submitted nominations, 100 team members were recognized for their extraordinary performance and contributions to our shared vision of becoming the greatest integrated health care company in the world.
Among them, 26 were selected as Platinum Award recipients and eight received the Diamond Award. The highest honor of the evening, the Award of Distinction, was presented to one individual whose impact exemplifies the best of PDS Health.
Congratulations to all the nominees and winners. Your performance is truly extraordinary, and your commitment continues to shape the future of integrated health care.
A productive Friday of clinical breakouts, regional management and support leader charges, OD/RM alignment and specialty and medical meetings.
One of the most anticipated moments of XP Gala 2025 was the keynote address by internationally renowned speaker and best-selling author Simon Sinek. Known for challenging conventional thinking around leadership and purpose, Mr. Sinek brought his signature clarity and optimism to the stage, offering a powerful message that resonated across the room.
Throughout his talk, Mr. Sinek encouraged attendees to rethink leadership as a commitment to service, connection and long-term impact. Drawing from his popular books “Start with Why”, “Leaders Eat Last”, “The Infinite Game” and more, he explored how the most effective leaders focus not just on what they do, but why they do it.
As a trained ethnographer, Mr. Sinek has spent years studying how people and organizations think, act and communicate. He shared stories and patterns he’s uncovered from working with a wide range of leaders, from military commanders and government officials to entrepreneurs, artists and educators. His insights offered both inspiration and practical takeaways for PDS Health team members working to create healthier, happier communities.
Mr. Sinek’s work has earned international recognition, and his ideas have shaped leadership practices across industries. He’s an adjunct staff member with the RAND Corporation, collaborates with all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, and is actively involved in nonprofit and arts communities. He is also the founder of The Optimism Company, a leadership learning organization, and hosts the podcast A Bit of Optimism.
His message was clear: When we lead with purpose and build trust, we unlock the full potential of our teams — and create the kind of culture that drives lasting change.
Presented by: Anthony Falone, DMD, MS,
Before the reset, Port Orange was simply steady, a practice waiting for momentum. “The office had always hovered at the same level,” said Minh Pham, DDS, multi-practice owner dentist and member of the National Clinical Council. “It was status quo. I saw the potential — it just needed a reset.”
That reset began in late 2023. With business intention and clinical clarity, Dr. Pham brought in like-minded specialists, reintroduced standards around the Perfect Patient Experience® (PPE), modernized equipment and restructured the daily rhythm of care. But the transformation wasn’t just operational — it was cultural.
“We didn’t replace the team. We believed in them,” he said. Dr. Pham partnered with Owner Dentist Benjamin Song, DMD, inviting him into a shared vision: To turn an office around. Later, Dr. Pham recalled, “He told me that experience changed the trajectory of his career.”
The growth came because the culture changed. Expectations rose. Everyone aligned around the platform — and they believed it could work.
The numbers? From -$70,000 to +$130,000 monthly cash flow. From $1 million to $4.5 million in revenue. From burnout to buy-in.
But beyond the metrics was something more lasting: A culture that outlived its catalyst. “Even after I stepped away, they kept crushing it. The foundation stuck.”
Regional Manager Jose Loperena echoed the sentiment. “Operations Manager Chelsea Ullyot and Dr. Song are two of the hardest-working people I’ve ever partnered with. They didn’t just push performance — they created a place people love showing up to.”
And that’s the real win.

In Tucson, success isn’t a surprise. It’s the product of showing up, together, every single day.
This office has been nominated three times, and in 2024, it was finally their moment. But ask anyone on the team, and they’ll tell you: The recognition wasn’t the goal. Consistency was.
“We’re in sync,” said Owner Dentist Bart Stears, DDS. “We’ve seen how the platform works, and we execute it relentlessly. We love our specialists. We love CBCT. We give our patients the Perfect Patient Experience® — we have to be relentless in our execution.”
Operations Manager Rachel Vegan agrees. “People want to come and shadow us looking for a trick. But there is no trick. We just show up, and we do it every day.” That work has paid off — the team hit $900,000 per month twice before and is expanding to 26 operatories with $1 million month in sight.
Presented by: Toreano Norris, Regional Partner, Central Valley/Bay Area Region
What makes it work? A culture that runs on radical transparency, team-wide willingness to solve problems together — as well as March Madness brackets, playful jokes and Crumbl Cookies. “It’s high adrenaline,” Rachel shared. “We keep a close pulse on the vibe and when the energy’s off, we reset it fast.”
That same energy drives their work in the community. From charity: water to diaper drives collecting 8,000+ donations, patients see the impact the moment they walk in and they trust this team to keep showing up.
“I’m proud to be the provider of choice in our community,” said Dr. Stears. “My kids go to school here. We shop at the same grocery stores and eat at the same restaurants as our patients. I love running into them in the community and hearing that they’re happy with the care we provide. Serving our community in a meaningful way — that’s the ultimate goal. The growth is just a result of that.”
“Being named Regional Manager of the Year is incredibly humbling. It is a reminder that leading with passion and putting people first truly matters. I hope this recognition encourages others to believe in themselves and know that their impact is felt. For me, this award is motivation to keep showing up with heart, to keep learning and to continue pouring into the people who make PDS Health such a special place to grow.”

“2024 tested us in every way, but our team showed up, learned fast and leaned on each other. With the support of the PDS Health platform, we grew stronger and that’s what made us #1.”
- Alexis Ortiz, Operations Manager
“Our team came together to make it all happen. It wasn’t about numbers or growth — it was the culture we built, the trust we earned from our patients, and the way we kept pushing for excellence in every detail. Seeing patients walk in with confidence and leave with a smile — that’s what made the year truly unforgettable.”
- Claudia Camacho, DDS, Owner Dentist
Nancy Gomez joined PDS Health in 2016 as an extern who was eager to learn and grow in her new career. Over time and with the guidance of a strong support system that included an experienced circle of mentors, she began to take on more responsibilities and deepen her clinical knowledge. Most importantly, Nancy began to build meaningful relationships with both colleagues and patients, establishing herself as a trusted advocate and team member.
Winning the Award of Distinction has reaffirmed Nancy’s belief in providing the highest standard in patient care, along with her dedication to PDS Health. She shares that being able to provide excellence in care inspires her to grow both professionally and personally. “It serves as a reminder of the impact we can make when we lead with purpose and passion,” she explained.
Central Colorado Regional Manager Sarah Quick echoed Nancy’s sentiments. “Nancy is the embodiment of what it means to be a servant leader,” said Sarah. “She is always saying ‘yes’ to investing in others’ growth and stepping up to support not only her own team, but offices across the region. She leads with humility, hunger and a coachable spirit, and is constantly raising the bar for her peers and elevating her home office.”
Being a lead dental assistant has helped Nancy nurture her leadership skills. When asked what her next steps will be, she said she looks forward to continuing to mentor other dental assistants and enhancing patient care processes. She is also looking to explore leadership opportunities within PDS Health. “While I was at XP Gala, I had a chance to connect with so many extraordinary team members who developed their careers at PDS Health. I want to keep pushing the boundaries and be able to contribute to that same culture of growth and excellence.”
“It’s not a surprise Nancy intends to continue pushing forward in her career,” added Sarah. “The Award of Distinction is truly a reflection of her unwavering dedication and impact to patients, her team and PDS Health.”
As she continues to look forward to the future, Nancy has committed herself to moving PDS Health’s purpose and mission forward by leading with compassion, promoting a strong team culture and always prioritizing the patient experience. She leaves us with five powerful words that best describe how she feels about winning this award: Grateful, empowered, honored, motivated and inspired. We could not have said it better ourselves.

“What sets Pearland apart from other practices is their unmatched access to care and unwavering ‘yes’ attitude. Patients can count on flexible scheduling, timely appointments and a team that goes above and beyond to say ‘yes’ whenever possible.”
- Michael Hurley, Regional Partner
“Being named Pediatric Dental Office of the Year is a tremendous honor that reaffirms my passion for delivering compassionate, high-quality care and creating a positive dental experience for every child.”
- Mengxia “Mia” Chen, DDS, MPH, MSD, Owner Dentist
Success like this doesn’t happen in a single year. It’s layered — built through alignment, sustained focus and a culture that doesn’t flinch under pressure.
“Alex and Team OC have remained maniacally focused, resolute and determined over the course of several years,” said Territory Partner Maha Said-Shariff. “Their clinical, operational and regional cultures are all fiercely centered on clinical excellence, Perfect Patient Experience® and team engagement.”
Led by Regional Partner Alex Creelman, Orange County’s rise was methodical. What began in 2021 as foundation-building evolved through challenge and growth. By 2024, high performance wasn’t the goal, it was the norm.
“We didn’t need to reinvent the wheel,” Alex said. “We just had to double down on the platform.”
From CEREC® and CBCT to Saturdays, OralFitnessCheck™ (OFC), and the Mouth-Body Connection®, the team stayed committed to the fundamentals — even launching their first dental-medical integrated office with regional health system MemorialCare in 2023.
Still, the most powerful force wasn’t performance. It was culture.
Across owner dentists, regional managers and operations managers, the region leaned into open communication, rapid execution and shared goals. Challenges like associate retention were met with reflection, realignment and action.
“Everyone talks. Everyone contributes. We all move forward, together.” That “we” is what Maha calls their secret: “There’s an utter suspension of ‘I’ — and a relentless focus on ‘we.’”

Health care is transforming beyond traditional boundaries, and nowhere is this more evident than at the intersection of dental and medical care at PDS Health.
With a foundation in dental excellence (PDS Health Dental) and the expansion of our dedicated business unit, PDS Health Medical, the organization is leading a new approach to integrated health care where clinicians across both disciplines are already seeing real results.
This feature explores the strategic vision behind PDS Health Medical’s innovative care model, as well as the practical, day-to-day impact of through the lens of Joseph Brown, DMD, owner dentist of North Las Vegas Modern Dentistry (Office 1193). Together, these perspectives demonstrate how breaking down silos between dentistry and primary care enhances diagnostic capabilities, improves treatment planning and leads to more coordinated, whole-person care.
At PDS Health, the future of health care isn’t about choosing between medical and dental expertise — it’s about bringing them together to create a truly comprehensive patient experience. We are leading a movement toward integrated health care with meaningful impact.
In my dental practice, I’ve seen firsthand how valuable a strong partnership with a nurse practitioner (NP) can be. Oral health is deeply connected to overall health and working closely with an NP allows me to provide more comprehensive care to my patients. By collaborating on diagnostics, sharing referrals and combining our expertise, we can improve patient outcomes and deliver a more holistic approach to health care.
One of the biggest advantages of working with an NP is the ability to streamline diagnostics. For example, I now offer in-house HbA1c testing to help quickly assess patients for diabetes. This immediate insight can be critical when dental findings suggest a potential metabolic issue. Additionally, I utilize OralFitnessCheck™ (OFC), a valuable tool for detecting early signs of periodontal disease and even for flagging conditions like arthritis. By combining these targeted tests with my clinical evaluations, I can catch potential problems early and ensure patients receive timely, coordinated care.
Cross-referrals between dentistry and primary care are essential. If I notice a patient with symptoms that could indicate a medical issue — such as persistent gum inflammation or oral lesions — I can refer them to the NP for further evaluation. Conversely, when NPs identify patients with chronic conditions like diabetes or arthritis, they often refer them to me for dental evaluations, especially when specialized testing like OFC can offer further insights. This two-way communication ensures that patients receive thorough, coordinated care that addresses both oral health and overall well-being.
Working alongside an NP has clear benefits for both patients and my practice. Patients appreciate the convenience of having their health care providers communicate and collaborate, which ultimately leads to better health outcomes. It also allows me to focus on dentistry while trusting that broader health concerns are managed effectively. This partnership not only enhances diagnostic accuracy but also helps us deliver a higher standard of care.
In today’s health care environment, no one works completely alone. By collaborating with an NP and incorporating advanced in-house testing like HbA1c and OFC, I’m able to provide patients with a more complete, well-rounded health care experience. It’s a partnership that truly makes a difference.

In today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, PDS Health is leading the way with an innovative approach to primary care.
JOSEPH FELDSIEN President, PDS Health Medical
By intentionally positioning ourselves at the intersection of dental and medical care, we are creating a model that bridges traditional silos and delivers better outcomes for patients.
The cornerstone of PDS Health Medical’s primary care strategy is the integration of medical and dental services under one roof. This patient-centered approach addresses total health in ways traditional models simply can’t.
With our co-located practices, we have the opportunity to deliver a truly ‘connected’ primary care experience — one that brings dentistry and medical together in a way that’s both meaningful and scalable. I believe it will be the foremost model of primary care in America.
This approach also capitalizes on one key behavior: People tend to visit their dentist more often than their primary care provider. By bringing these services together, PDS Health creates more opportunities to engage patients early, offer preventive care and catch issues before they become more serious.
Unlike many primary care settings, PDS Health Medical prioritizes quality over volume. We are investing heavily in proven technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to strengthen the patient-provider relationship and enhance the overall care experience.
We’re incorporating tools that help reduce administrative tasks so clinicians can be more present with patients. One example is ambient listening technology that captures notes during visits, allowing providers to focus on the conversation rather than the computer.
Our strategy rests on three core pillars:
• Clinical Excellence
We emphasize preventive health initiatives and leverage the growing body of research on the connection between periodontal disease and systemic conditions. PDS Health stands uniquely at the intersection where dental science meets medical practice through our focus on the Mouth-Body Connection® (MBC).
No other organization is taking the impact of the MBC as seriously as we are. We continue to partner with researchers who believe as much as 50% of heart attacks and strokes could be triggered by oral infections, and have discovered that 78.2% of heart attack clots contain a 16-times greater concentration of the same bacteria in teeth needing root canal therapy.
• Operational Excellence
Operational excellence has been a key part of our growth thus far and will continue to drive the expansion of PDS Health Medical. Standardized processes, strong performance metrics and exceptional customer experiences are central to this work.
We are building a new vision for primary care that includes both medical and oral health, while maintaining the high standards our organization is known for.
• Strategic Partnerships
High-level strategic partnerships with established healthcare organizations are critical to our 10-year plan. These collaborations will allow us to scale faster and increase financial sustainability.
Our consumer-facing brands, Smile Generation and PDS Medical Group, will integrate with strategic healthcare partners so patients can get oral care and medical care all in one location.
Most health systems operate regionally. We’re building something different. PDS Health Medical is designed with national scale in mind, built on shared services and powered by advanced tools like the Epic platform.
This approach reinforces PDS Health’s unique position at the intersection of dental and medical care, forming a scalable model that’s redefining how primary care is delivered.
For the year ahead, we’re focused on:
• Expanding access and improving clinical excellence metrics
• Strengthening referral networks and enhancing star ratings
• Driving operational consistency
• Building partnerships with leading health systems
• Growing in key markets like Northern California, Southern California, Colorado and Florida
All of this supports one goal: Transforming primary care by connecting oral health and systemic health in ways that truly improve patient outcomes.
As the healthcare industry continues to shift, we have an opportunity to lead from the front — and to define what modern, integrated care looks like for years to come.
PDS Health is committed to deepening our understanding of the Mouth-Body Connection ® (MBC) and the links between oral health and systemic conditions. Each quarter, we focus on a different area of the body to help bring this connection to life. In Q2, the spotlight is on brain health, with content available for both consumers and team members.

JOANN CUNNINGHAM Senior Director, Learning and Development
The mouth usually isn’t an obvious place to look for the impact of an anxiety disorder. Yet, the inside of the mouth is where anxiety does manifest.
National health surveys estimate that more than 31% of teens and adults experience an anxiety disorder including generalized anxiety disorder, phobias, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia and selective mutism.
Here are ways in which an anxiety disorder can impact the mouth:
• Canker sores: These are white, yellow or gray ulcers that appear temporarily on the inside of the lips, below the gums, on the roof and walls of the mouth. Stress and anxiety can trigger canker sores.
• Lichen planus: This is a chronic inflammatory condition that features white lacy lines and red areas on the gums, tongue and inside the cheek. Experts theorize that it appears due to a combination of factors, including genetic predisposition and anxiety.
• Burning mouth syndrome: This is an ongoing or recurring burning and scalding sensation on the gums, tongue, inside the cheeks or roof of the mouth. It is linked to anxiety and can develop over time or occur suddenly.
• Bruxism: Grinding or clenching one’s teeth. This doesn’t cause serious complications for most people, but in severe cases, it can damage teeth, fillings and crowns.
It’s a good idea for those with an anxiety disorder to inform their dentist of their mental health condition and any medications as soon as possible. This enables the oral healthcare team to address the impact during dental visits and work in tandem with mental healthcare providers on a holistic approach to the wellness of the mouth and mind.

From PDS Health’s earliest days, Founder and CEO Stephen Thorne made service a core principle of the organization, and today that fundamental belief is still evident in all we do. Our commitment to serving others is only possible because of you, our extraordinary team members, who bring that purpose to life. As PDS Health grows, so does our impact, felt from the West Coast to East Coast, Guatemala to Ethiopia, exponentially changing lives worldwide.
Achieving our vision of healthier, happier patients begins with setting ambitious goals to improve communities close to home and those farther away. Through our partnership with charity: water, we’ve united individuals across the country to resolve the clean water crisis on a global scale. Since 2009, because of your efforts, more than 300,000 people globally now have access to clean, safe drinking water. You’ve also empowered our patients to participate, giving them the experience of helping shape the world in a seemingly small, yet immensely significant way.
Over the past 15 years, you’ve extended a helping hand to patients in need of additional support through Smile Generation Serve Day. Serve Day brings our mission to life. Since it began, the event has grown significantly. In 2024 alone, it provided more than $16.5 million in donated dentistry to underserved patients across the country. Since 2011, more than 31,000 patients have received lifechanging care.
Through togetherness at PDS Health, we have and will continue to transform smiles and create healthier, happier communities. Because of you, the world looks different – kinder, brighter. That’s heartwarming to write. That’s beautiful to picture. That’s The Power of X
Join us in celebrating the 15th annual Smile Generation Serve Day on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025.
CARLI CASEY Director, We Serve
The African proverb “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together” is the inspiration for PDS Health Foundation’s partnership strategy. Far too often, nonprofits operate in silos. If we want to be a true force multiplier in our mission to improve access to oral health care, partnerships are key.
The PDS Health Foundation is lucky to have several blossoming partnerships that help us reach more people and extend our impact.
American Student Dental Association Collaboration
PDS Health has been a longstanding partner of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) and in recent years, that partnership has grown to include a strong focus on service. Through ASDA, PDS Health has connected with more students across the country, while the PDS Health Foundation has expanded its outreach through a variety of service-oriented events.
Thanks to Constance Hyman, Supervisor of University Relations at PDS Health, the Foundation has organized “lunch and learns” to spotlight the Dentists for Special Needs office, assemble desensitization kits and expose students to service trips, encouraging them to think about how they can help international communities.
“Everything the PDS Health Foundation offers has helped us build even more meaningful relationships with dental students,” said Constance. “It gives them a different perspective on dentistry, one they might not get otherwise. We’re introducing them to special care and special needs dentistry, which many have never been exposed to. The Foundation opens their minds to a path they didn’t know was possible.”
University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry
The PDS Health Foundation is proud to partner with the University of the Pacific’s (UOP) Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.
Over the past two years, 24 UOP students have participated in trips to Clínica Dental in Xenacoj, Guatemala, including PDS Health Associate Dentist Kayla Hunt, DDS. “At the end of the day, my driving reason for doing these trips is the people, they are so appreciative,” Dr. Hunt said. “Yes, a lot of work goes into it, but providing the dentistry is so rewarding and worth it.” Dr. Hunt, who now works at Modern Powers Dentistry in Colorado Springs, Colo. (Office 527), led and organized two services trips while she was a student at UOP.
Working alongside the Specialty Residency and Specialty Operations teams, the PDS Health Foundation recently welcomed local pediatric dental residents from the NYU Langone Dental Medicine program to the Dentists for Special Needs clinic in Tucson, Arizona. The residents toured the office and participated in a Q&A session to learn more about the practice and its approach to care.
“I think it’s great we’re exposing residents to the Dentists for Special Needs office. It gives them the chance to ask questions not only about PDS Health but also about opportunities in special needs care,” said Kaitlyn Georgette, University Relations Specialist at PDS Health.
“Many pediatric dentists continue treating special needs patients into adulthood, so it’s important to provide this kind of experience early on,” said Stephanie Gleason, Director of Kids Dentistry Business Development.
Grant a Gift Autism FoundationAckerman Center
The PDS Health Foundation is developing a strong partnership with the Grant a Gift Autism FoundationAckerman Center in Las Vegas, Nev. This collaboration combines the Ackerman Center’s clinical expertise with
the Foundation’s experience providing care to the special needs community.
Recently, Cathie Wild-Pappas, Regional Partner of the North and South Las Vegas Regions, arranged for Ackerman Center Clinical Director Julie Beasley, PhD, to speak to owner dentists, associate dentists and dental hygienists about treating patients on the autism spectrum.
“We do well by doing good, so this is another way to grow our business and brand by doing the right thing for the special needs community,” said Cathie. “My hope is that we can host a day of service for special needs every quarter.”
These partnerships leverage the power of students, advocates, and oral health leaders to multiply our impact in the communities we serve and beyond. They are powerful examples of what we can do when we are united by our shared vision for better overall health through better oral health.
MICHAEL LE Executive Director, PDS Health Foundation
MARIE FERLAND Director, Team Member Benefits
Much like our vision for patients, PDS Health aims to create healthier, happier team members through proactive care that supports prevention, early action and long-term well-being.
PDS Health is leading a paradigm shift in health care by focusing on identifying serious conditions before they become chronic. Reducing oral inflammation or connecting patients with primary care providers to manage high blood pressure can help lower the risk of diabetes and stroke. This kind of early intervention leads to better outcomes and we are committed to bringing that same proactive approach to the health of our team members.
While most people understand the importance of preventive care, taking the necessary steps can be challenging. We’re excited to announce new options designed to make those steps easier and a few incentives, too.

The dental industry is experiencing a rise in specialtyfocused dental support organizations (DSOs) driven by patient demand for integrated care, provider efficiency, increased support at scale and improved collaboration between general and specialty dentists. Many of these emerging specialty DSOs are in the early stages of their development and are still validating their business models.
As an early leader in the integration of dental specialties, PDS Health is uniquely positioned to not only stay ahead of these trends but to fundamentally reshape how the industry delivers in-office comprehensive specialty care to patients. To that end, PDS Health continues to grow our Specialty platform, and our internal Specialty DSO (SDSO) model is part of that evolution by expanding our collective ability to serve more patients within a comprehensive care model.
STEPHANIE GLEASON Director, Kids Dentistry and Orthodontics
BEN OVANDO Sr. Manager, Specialty Platform Development
The U.S. Census Bureau projects a 70% increase in the 65-and-older population by 2030. As this demographic grows, so will the need for specialized dental care, including treatment for periodontal disease, implants, dentures and more. Research shows that periodontal disease becomes significantly more prevalent with age, affecting 24% of adults aged 30-34 and jumping to 70% in those 65 and older. The bacteria linked to periodontal disease are also associated with systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, diabetes, cancer and other comorbidities. This presents a meaningful opportunity for PDS Health oral health providers to continue driving an integrated approach through quality specialty referrals, as well as dental-medical integration.
Within this same population, implants and implant-retained dentures represent a large growth opportunity as more patients seek a better option than traditional dentures. The American College of Prosthodontists estimates 30 million Americans are missing all their teeth in one or both jaws, and nearly 70% of adults 65 and older are missing at least one tooth. Dental implants and implant-retained dentures, such as All-on-X and Locator Fixed, are widely recognized as effective treatment options for replacing missing teeth.
With patients becoming more aware of these treatment choices, PDS Health dentists can apply the Perfect Patient Experience® (PPE) framework, particularly the Awareness, Consequences, Concern, Treatment (ACC/Tx) dialogue, to ensure patients are fully informed of the urgency and value of implants or implant-retained dentures.
School-age children and teens also present significant opportunities for specialty dentistry. National data collected between 2017 and 2020 indicated that 46% of children ages 2-19 had at least one untreated or restored dental caries in primary or permanent teeth. Our teams can leverage tools like Caries Risk Assessments, Patient Education documents in Epic and articles on the Smile Generation website to educate and collaborate with caregivers about emerging non-invasive treatments to treat dental cavities like silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and dental remineralization agents such as Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus. Integrating these treatments into preventive care protocols presents an opportunity to address early caries proactively, potentially reducing the need for more invasive restorative procedures in the future.
Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus is an enamel remineralization agent applied to an initial carious lesion to help existing minerals found in saliva, such as calcium and phosphate, to penetrate and remineralize the enamel surface. Benefits to patients include:
• Minimally invasive procedure with no drilling or injection
• Pain-free, tasteless and non-staining
• One-time application
• Safe for both adult and pediatric patients
As the demand for specialty dentistry grows, PDS Health’s industry-leading platform and groundbreaking focus on comprehensive care has positioned its oral health providers to serve as health care leaders. How will your practice create an exceptional future of growth for your specialty programs?

At PDS Health, excellence isn’t just a standard, it’s a commitment that our team members bring to life every day. In this article, we highlight three remarkable dental assistants who exemplify what it means to lead with execution, experience and excellence.
With 23 years at PDS Health, Kelly Smith, lead dental assistant at Winery Estate Dental Group (Office 15) and very first You’re Extraordinary winner in 2005, has mastered the Perfect Patient Experience® (PPE).
“I’m attentive to the small details,” Kelly shares. Whether it’s offering a blanket, headphones or playing a favorite movie during treatment, she remembers what matters to each patient.
Despite experiencing social anxiety, Kelly regularly steps outside her comfort zone to help others — volunteering, supporting charity events and even visits to elderly patients. While building her career, she also raised twins who are now college graduates.
She credits her success to “a strong work ethic, consistency and maintaining a ‘say yes’ attitude.”

excellence isn’t just something we strive for — it’s part of who we are.
The growing acceptance of the Mouth-Body Connection (MBC) and oral health’s central role in improving overall health is nothing new to us. PDS Health has been leading the conversation for years. Now, as the broader industry begins to recognize what we’ve long understood, we’re in a position to shift from awareness to action, using the science of the MBC to shape how we care for patients. This is our moment to embrace The Power of X — creating exceptional patient experiences through our unique understanding of how oral health connects to overall well-being.
The MBC is not a trend or an idea, it’s a well-established, evidence-based link between oral health and systemic health. Inflammation, infection and disease in the mouth are often connected to what’s happening in the rest of the body. And the reverse is also true — systemic health conditions frequently present in the mouth first. This science is what calls us to think differently about how care is delivered.
We must move beyond treating oral and systemic health in isolation and begin practicing in ways that reflect the reality of the whole patient. That means building clinical workflows, communication and culture that support true integration.
Becoming the world’s greatest integrated healthcare organization starts now, in your offices across the country, as you advocate and communicate the importance of understanding the MBC and the value that a quick saliva test can provide when it comes to improving patient outcomes and helping prevent more serious disease.
DEEPIKA DHAMA, DDS
One important way we can put this into practice is through active-matrix metalloproteinase (aMMP-8) saliva screening, or OralFitnessCheck™ (OFC). This quick, five-minute test helps identify collagen breakdown associated with gingival, periodontal and peri-implant diseases. OFC results can also serve as early indicators for issues such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s. This screening supports proactive care and strengthens coordination with medical providers while helping patients better understand their overall health.
We’ve made the screening process more seamless. The ORALyzer® device is now integrated with Epic, which means once a test is ordered, the results are uploaded directly into the patient’s record. This streamlines your team’s workflow and supports more informed clinical decisions.
Saliva screening not only improves care for patients, but it’s equally beneficial to our practices. It provides deeper insight into patient health and allows us to incorporate primary care providers into the conversation and reinforce our role as an integrated health care provider.
Multi-practice owner dentist, National Clinical Council member and Mouth-Body Connection Subject Matter Expert
It’s important to acknowledge that while we are proactive in our understanding of the MBC, plenty of patients are not getting proactive care rooted in whole-body health. To make this shift, we must change the conversation and change the culture within our practices to put the MBC at the center of our operations.
Treatment rooted in the MBC — like saliva screening, HbA1c testing, CBCT and more — gives clinicians and patients a more holistic view of their health and offers clear steps to take to maintain or improve it. We must reinforce the power of this level of treatment every chance we get. Your offices can do that by:
• Introducing the MBC into conversations with patients about their personalized care
• Highlighting the value of OFC and other tests that can identify early indicators of more serious problems, especially for patients with a history of chronic disease
• Sharing stories of patients who saw improved outcomes or avoided more serious consequences thanks to early intervention and treatment
• Your front desk can ask patients for their medical card as a conversation starter
• Offer MBC materials and a QR code in the lobby of your practice
• Dive into patients’ family history to determine if they are at greater risk for conditions like diabetes or heart disease
• Make OFC an automatic part of your office protocol
These are just a few ways to reinforce the importance of proactive treatment starting today. While the industry is beginning to move toward MBC, the status quo still favors reactive care — treating problems instead of preventing them.
At PDS Health, we have the opportunity to lead. When we consistently talk to patients about the MBC and make early screening part of our process, we help people take action before issues become serious. That’s how we shift the standard — one conversation, one test, one patient at a time.
NEMI GEORGE Vice President, Information Security
In today’s digital landscape, data has become our most precious commodity, much like oil was in previous decades. As an organization handling sensitive patient information daily, protecting this data is not just good business — it’s essential to our mission, required by law and critical to maintaining our patients’ trust. When it comes to information security, every team member plays a vital role in our collective defense.
As we embrace our transformation into a fully integrated health care support organization, information security becomes even more critical. The Power of X extends to how we protect our patients’ data — creating exceptional experiences through trustworthy data handling, expanding our security capabilities to meet evolving threats and maintaining exceptional standards in safeguarding the sensitive information entrusted to us.
The stakes in data security have never been higher. In 2024, there were 13 major breaches involving over a million health records in the U.S. Overall, approximately 146 billion health records were exposed in 2024 in the U.S. alone. The financial impact is equally significant. The average cost of a major cybersecurity breach in healthcare organizations is approximately $9.77 million as of 2024. Healthcare breaches are particularly costly due to the sensitive nature of the data involved and the extensive regulatory requirements.
Our email security systems demonstrate these threats daily. Recent data shows that in the past few months, out of 66.3 million inbound emails, only 18.3 million were delivered after our security filters removed various threats, including 31,000 phishing attempts and 16,000 advanced malware threats.
PDS Health maintains a strong security position with an average security program maturity score of 96 (out of a possible 100), significantly higher than the average score of 79 for leading dental support organizations. Our security approach includes:
• Advanced Threat Detection: During the last reporting period, our systems processed 211.8 billion events and filtered over 22,000 potential alerts. Of these, 4,626 alerts were automatically closed, allowing our security team to focus on the most critical issues. Our AI-powered systems are continuously improving our ability to detect and respond to threats.
• Improved Awareness: Our phishing vulnerability rate has dropped from 11.7% in 2022 to just 2.1% in Q1 of 2025, surpassing our target of 6.0%. This improvement reflects the effectiveness of our training programs and growing security awareness among team members.
• Effective Incident Response: We successfully responded to two major security incidents, including the Change Healthcare incident, with minimal disruption to operations. This demonstrates our ability to manage security challenges effectively even in crisis situations.
Security at PDS Health is everyone’s responsibility. Here is how you can help:
Recognize and Report Suspicious Activities
• Use the “Report Phish” button for suspicious emails or forward them to our security mailbox
• Be aware of AI scams creating fake video and voice messages, which are on the rise
• If you see something, say something. Timely reporting of suspicious activity is crucial
Follow Secure Data Handling Practices
• Type “[secure]” in email subject lines when sending confidential information
• When using Box, invite specific individuals rather than sharing general download links
• When sharing data externally, it is recommended that you use a password to protect the files
• Safeguard personal and sensitive business information including protected health information (PHI)
Maintain Strong Access Controls
• Use complex and unique passwords, especially for high-privilege accounts
• Do not reuse your passwords for PDS Health applications for personal accounts
• Enable multi-factor authentication and a password manager whenever possible
• Only access data necessary for your specific role
Keep Systems Updated
• Install security patches promptly, even if occasionally inconvenient, on your home and work devices
• Secure your home network by using complex passwords on your Wi-Fi network
Physical Security Matters Too
• Prevent tailgating at facility entrances. All team members should swipe their badges when entering the building
• Follow HIPAA-compliant clear desk policies
Engage with Security Training
• Complete required training security modules
• Apply AI policy awareness — We recently released an AI Policy for PDS Health. Please be mindful of its limitations and applicability for health care
Information security is not just IT’s responsibility, it is fundamental to everyone’s job at PDS Health. The impressive security metrics we have achieved reflect both our organizational commitment and the vigilance of every team member. As threats continue to evolve, particularly with the rise of AI-powered attacks, your role in protecting our data becomes increasingly crucial.
By following these guidelines and staying alert, you help protect our most valuable asset: Our data, and by extension, the trust our patients place in us every day.
A shift is occurring in the dental industry as dental hygienists search for new ways to elevate their careers beyond the traditional private practice setting. This departure from private practices suggests that hygienists are driven by a desire for professional growth, enhanced roles in health care, opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and working to the full scope of clinical practice.
SUMMER LAMOUREAUX, RDH Hygiene Director, PDS Health University – Dental
PDS Health is at the forefront of this transformation for dental hygienists. As the industry faces a projected shortage of hygienists over the next five to seven years, particularly in private practice settings, we see both a challenge and an opportunity. PDS Health is committed to supporting hygienists in building meaningful, long-term careers through diverse pathways for growth, opportunities to expand their skills and a culture where exceptional performance is recognized and supported. It’s all part of our broader commitment to transforming how health care is delivered and experienced.
The traditional role of a dental hygienist centers around preventive care, prophylaxis and patient education. In a private practice setting, however, the opportunities for growth remain limited, with other challenges many hygienists face including job dissatisfaction, limited career advancement and lack of recognition for their expanding capabilities.
The challenges within traditional private practice settings often extend beyond job satisfaction. Many hygienists report feeling disconnected from the broader health care ecosystem, despite growing evidence of the crucial oral-systemic link. This disconnect, coupled with limited opportunities for growth, has signaled a shift in how dental hygienists envision their future roles in health care.
The direction of health care lies in dental-medical integration, and hygienists see that connection clearly. Patients are becoming more aware of the oral-systemic link, driving the demand for more comprehensive care that bridges the gap between dental and medical services. With support in the form of education, engagement and training, hygienists can seize this opportunity, further expanding their role into the health care space.
in healthcare technology are creating new opportunities for dental hygienists.
Additionally, advancements and innovation in healthcare technology are creating new opportunities for dental hygienists to move into expanded roles beyond traditional settings, creating greater patient impact. Digital imaging, teledentistry and advanced diagnostic tools have opened doors to more sophisticated patient care approaches, requiring enhanced skills and knowledge beyond conventional training.
Finally, with health care shifting toward more interdisciplinary collaboration between dental and medical, this unique positioning places dental hygienists as ideal candidates for roles that require understanding both disciplines, allowing them to facilitate care and communication between dentists and medical providers.
PDS Health recognizes that the future of dental hygiene extends far beyond traditional chairside duties and continues to develop multiple pathways for professional advancement, supporting hygienists in working to the full scope of practice, including:
• Collaborative care models
• Saliva screenings
• Saliva diagnostics
• Research and development opportunities
• Continued education and specialization: Highlight the importance of advanced education in areas such as oral-systemic health, periodontics or public health.
The migration of dental hygienists from traditional settings represents an opportunity to reshape the dental industry for the greater good. PDS Health is committed to creating an environment where hygienists can practice at the full scope of their abilities, continue their professional development and make meaningful contributions to improve patient outcomes.
As the health care landscape continues to evolve, the role of dental hygienists will only grow in importance. The future of dental hygiene lies in embracing this evolution, supporting professional growth and creating pathways for expanded practice. PDS Health stands ready to support hygienists in this journey as they become leaders and patient advocates in the health care space.
Katherine Ekins and Nathan Ekins
Katherine Ekins, lead dental assistant, has had the unique pleasure of working alongside her 18-year-old son, Nathan Ekins, a current dental assistant with aspirations of becoming an oral surgeon. Thanks to PDS Health and the guidance of Katayoun Setareh, DDS, owner dentist of Simi Valley Smiles Dentistry (Office 39), Nathan has gained invaluable hands-on experience working alongside general dentists, oral surgeons, periodontists and endodontists. These experiences have not only strengthened his passion for dentistry but also laid a strong foundation for his future.
Throughout his time with the regional and office teams, Nathan has been warmly welcomed and supported — affirming PDS Health’s commitment to helping him grow personally and professionally.
Beyond his dedication to learning, Nathan has a heart for service. He participated in his first Smile Generation Serve Day last year, finding fulfillment in using dentistry to help others.
“I have no doubt that Nathan is on the road to becoming an exceptional dentist — one who prioritizes patient well-being and brings both skill and compassion to his practice,” Katherine shared. As both a proud mother and a PDS Health team member, she’s incredibly grateful for the role the organization has played in shaping her son’s journey.
Kliff Grimes and Jessica Grimes
Jessica Grimes, daughter of Kliff Grimes, Senior Advisor, People Relations, discovered her passion for dentistry during her sophomore year of high school. Now in her first year at Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, she is already making an impact. She recently participated in Oral Health Day, where she helped provide free dental care to Nashville residents. Seeing firsthand how financial barriers prevent many from accessing necessary care only strengthened her commitment to expanding access to dental services for all.
While she has broader professional goals, Jessica’s heart is in pediatric dentistry. She hopes to create a safe, welcoming space where children can learn about the importance of preventive care and develop healthy habits that last a lifetime. Her goal is to help build confidence and long-term wellness — starting with a smile. Positive early experiences, she believes, can shape a child’s entire approach to oral health.
Jessica credits her family as a major source of support throughout her journey.
“My family has been my biggest source of support,” she shared. “Their belief in me has kept me motivated through the many challenges of dental school. They’re always just one phone call away.”
At PDS Health, passion runs deeper than just at work. Here are four of the many team members with family members pursuing careers in health care, creating a meaningful bridge between their professional lives and personal relationships.
Caroline Wagner, niece of Carolyn Ghazal, DDS, VP, PDS Health University – Dental, grew up surrounded by healthcare professionals, which sparked an early interest in dentistry. Having graduated college this spring, she’s been accepted to dental school and has spent time shadowing clinicians and participating in outreach trips to gain a deeper understanding of the profession.
“At first, I thought dentistry was only about technical skills,” Caroline said. “While those skills are fundamental, I realized on my very first day shadowing how important it is to make connections and build relationships. That’s what truly sets a good dentist apart from a great one.”
Looking beyond traditional practice, Caroline is passionate about creating public health outreach programs that deliver care to underserved communities. During a dental service trip to a remote village in Peru, she met a young boy who was visibly anxious and hesitant to receive treatment.
“We were trying to get him to sit in the dental chair, but he was very apprehensive,” she recalled. As the appointment ended, Caroline stayed by his side to offer comfort. “When he was ready to leave, the smiles and hugs he gave me were priceless.”
Experiences like this have only deepened Caroline’s commitment to a career that blends clinical excellence with compassion and service.
Parvinder Gill was introduced to health care early in life, growing up with both parents in the field. It was the work of his mother, Amardeep Gill, DDS, multi-practice owner dentist, that ultimately sparked his interest in dentistry. After he shared his curiosity about the profession, Dr. Gill encouraged him to apply for a dental assistant (DA) in training position to gain firsthand experience. That opportunity, combined with a service trip to Guatemala with the PDS Health Foundation, helped solidify his decision to pursue a career in dentistry.
“After learning more about how essential our oral health is to our overall health, I wanted to help increase access to care in communities where it is lacking,” Parvinder said. During his time as a DA in training, he developed a strong appreciation for the relationships formed between providers and patients. Watching his mother care for each person who entered her practice showed him the importance of empathy and connection in dentistry. He credits her guidance as instrumental in his journey. Her encouragement to experience dentistry directly allowed him to discover his own passion for the profession.
Parvinder will begin his dental education at Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine in June 2025.

Dijana Elmejdoubi, DDS, MS
Endodontist
Colorado Region
Dr. Dijana Elmejdoubi’s story isn’t just a tale of athleticism; it’s a testament to resilience, purpose and the indomitable spirit of a survivor. Born in Tuzla, a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, during the brutal conflicts of the 1990s, she found sanctuary and strength in running.
“It was my mental escape — my release and strength to survive — because I had something that I loved and was fighting to endure,” describing how the simplicity of running provided a profound counterbalance to the chaos around her. “Every stride was powered by purpose,” she adds. “I had grit that came out of the will to survive.”
At just nine years old, she was outrunning the boys in her schoolyard. Her raw talent and spirit vaulted her to the grandest stage of all: The 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She wasn’t just competing; she was representing her country’s hope, strength and survival, standing alongside its men and women on the world stage. Stepping onto the track, she was engulfed by a mix of nerves and deep gratitude, but steadied herself with, “I belonged there.” This moment was the culmination of years of rigorous training – twice, sometimes three times a day, through every condition imaginable.
The experience was transformative, imbuing her with resilience and a profound understanding of her role as a symbol of hope.
Now, as a clinician and leader, she channels that same determination into empowering others. “The lesson that has never left me is simple: Outwork everyone. Talent is a gift, but it’s effort, consistency and heart that transform it into something meaningful,” she asserts.
Living by a philosophy of purpose and humility, she aims to uplift those around her. “My journey has shown me what it means to be vulnerable and to fight for a future. Now, it’s my purpose to do the same for others. Whether it’s through healing, mentoring, or simply showing up with kindness — my message is: You are never alone,” she shares, continuing to inspire and impact lives far beyond the track.
Operations Manager
Fallon Dental Group (Office 285) Central Valley/Bay Area Region
From a middle school beginner to national champion and respected coach, Shaina’s volleyball journey embodies the spirit of dedication, leadership and passion that defines true athletes. Her talent and drive propelled her through high school and into the competitive world of NCAA Division II athletics at Sonoma State. There, Shaina played a key role in securing a national championship victory in 2018.
But for Shaina, the game was always about more than just winning. As she progressed in her athletic career, she discovered a new calling: Coaching. “I felt like there was something else I needed from the sport,” she reflects. With experience coaching both boys and girls, ranging in age from 3 to 18, her heart lies in working with high school boys, pushing them to grow both as athletes and individuals.
Today, she holds the impressive title of Vice President of Boys Development at Diablo Valley Volleyball Club in Walnut Creek, Calif. Her boys’ team ranked in the top 15 nationally for three consecutive years, a testament to her coaching style that extends beyond just athletics. She invests in her players’ holistic development, supporting them in academics and life skills.
“Practice the way you play,” her mantra, echoes through her coaching and professional life at PDS Health. Her story is a powerful serve, demonstrating how sports can forge leaders who elevate others in every arena they enter. In the game of life, she continues to set up success, proving that with the right mindset, one can spike any challenge that comes their way.
Jordan Gardner, DDS
Owner Dentist
Bloomington Smiles Dentistry (Office 879) // Minnesota Region
Dr. Jordan Gardner’s affinity for the violin emerged from the rich musical culture of her Minnesota hometown, where dedicated teachers and programs shaped her early artistic development. Initially starting with the flute, in line with her mother’s choice, she soon gravitated toward the string section where a compelling analogy captivated her: The violin was described as “drawing the picture,” while the viola was for “coloring it in.”
“I tried flute, hated it, so I switched to the violin,” she shares.
From the cozy, echo-filled community halls of her childhood to the expansive and revered stages of college auditoriums, Dr. Gardner’s life has been a symphony of evolving stages and sounds. At St. Mary’s University of Minnesota, the violin wasn’t just an instrument; it was a bridge connecting her to deeper realms of artistry. It was there, across the orchestral divide, that she first noticed the man who would become her husband the cellist seated opposite her.
Throughout her musical career, she has embraced opportunities to blend her skill with others, whether in complex Bach pieces or broader orchestral works. Each performance is a vivid expression of her belief in music’s power to animate life with extraordinary vibrancy, transforming ordinary moments into experiences of shared wonder.
Looking ahead, Dr. Gardner is eager to join a community orchestra and continue her musical exploration. “Do what makes you happy,” she advises, a mantra that guides her life and music. This belief underscores her commitment to finding joy and community through music. “Music does a very good job of bringing joy to the people who are listening.”
“Do what makes you happy.”

Christine Kim
Copywriter Marketing // Irvine Support Center
Last December, under the sweltering Malaysian sun, Christine Kim found herself on an unexpected field of dreams, representing Thailand in a flag football tournament that drew teams from across Asia. Initially, she planned to cheer for her boyfriend, a passionate footballer with collegiate experience who was representing India’s team. However, after he sent out a highlight reel of her past tournaments, Thailand’s team invited her to join.
Christine, whose athleticism spans from track to basketball, had previously competed in 9-on-9 powder puff football at college, facing off against teams from various University of California campuses. But adapting to the 5-on-5 format required a fast learning curve.
“It was like learning a new language under pressure,” she said of her rapid adoption after training sessions in the rain, just three days before the tournament with Thailand’s quarterback.
The tournament was more than just a competition — it brought people together and celebrated the sport’s
growing presence in Asia. Christine’s athleticism stood out when, as a first-time rusher, she sacked the quarterback during a live broadcast game.
Now back in Orange County, Calif., her passion for flag football continues to grow. She plays in local leagues where the sport is quickly gaining traction, thanks in part to its recognition in high school varsity sports and its upcoming debut in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Girls’ flag football is gaining significant momentum.
“Joining flag football has opened new doors, not just in the sport but in community and opportunity,” she said.
This journey wasn’t only about touchdowns. It became a lesson in embracing the unexpected.
“Lean into what brings you joy, even if it feels scary,” she said. “It’s only scary because it’s unfamiliar, not because you’re incapable.”
Lindsey Bennett
Operations Manager II
Federal Way Modern Dentistry, (Office 370) // Washington/Oregon Region
Lindsey Bennett’s journey as a volunteer puppy raiser is woven with the threads of compassion and a deep love for dogs. Her adventure began at Washington State University, where a simple campus club initiative sparked a profound commitment. “I’ve always wanted to make a difference,” Lindsey shares. “I love dogs and making an impact on someone else’s life.”
From the moment she receives each puppy from the Guide Dogs for the Blind campus in San Rafael, Calif., Lindsey’s role is pivotal. She nurtures these eight-week-old bundles of joy, preparing them not just for the tasks they’ll take on, but for the meaningful connections they’ll build along the way. “We start with the basics – sit, come, stay – but it’s about building confidence.”
Throughout the year, Lindsey introduces the puppies to varied environments, from bustling grocery stores to quiet parks, ensuring each young dog garners the positive associations necessary for their future roles. This preparation culminates in what Lindsey describes as deeply moving graduation ceremonies: “We get to meet the people whose lives these dogs will change. They tell us how much freedom their new companion will bring and how much safer they will feel in the world.”
As she reflects on her role, she emphasizes the importance of being fully committed to whatever path one chooses. “If it’s something you want to do, whether as a hobby or professionally, go for it and be all in,” she advises. “You’ll make mistakes, but that’s okay. Mistakes are part of learning, and through the process, you’ll make a difference.”
Landon Shores
Regional Recruiter
South Las Vegas Region
Landon Shores didn’t find running; it found him at a pivotal crossroads, offering not just a path forward but a gateway to self-discovery and adventure. After moving from Michigan to Tucson, Ariz., in 2010 for a new career and a change of scenery, he found himself amidst expansive trails that weave alongside wash beds — nature’s own serpentine running tracks. It was here, embraced by the stark yet vibrant Arizona landscape, where Landon would discover his true passion for running.
For Landon, running marathons is more than just physical activity. It’s about the camaraderie that binds runners worldwide in a shared, exhilarating pursuit. “It’s almost tribal,” he describes. “We’re all united by a single purpose, supporting each other to achieve our personal bests. There’s no other human experience quite like it.”
His resolve was tested during his first half marathon at the Rock ‘n’ Roll event in Las Vegas, November 2015. Facing near freezing temperatures and relentless rain, he confronted the physical and mental challenges head-on. “It was probably the most discouraging event I could have ever had as a runner,” he admits, initially feeling that such grueling conditions were not for him. However, embodying his belief that life, like running, requires “persistence and incremental improvements every day,” he continued to lace up his sneakers. This mindset not only kept him running but was also what really kicked his passion into high gear.
Since October 2021, he has run 20 marathons, covering diverse terrains across 10 states and four countries. Setting his sights high, he aspires to run marathons in all 50 states and 50 different countries, turning each course into a testament of perseverance and each finish line into a marker of personal evolution.
Landon emphasizes the true challenge in both running and life is striving to surpass yesterday’s version of ourselves. “Don’t worry about other runners or their times. Just focus on whether you did better in this race than the previous one and if you gave 100%.”
Each February, PDS Health proudly joins the national observance of American Heart Month to raise awareness for heart health and the important connection between oral health and overall health.
