In Memoriam Louis Harold Ickler III A Pacific Cup Yacht Club Founding Member, Commodore, and Racer October 20, 1939 - February 19, 2022

acific Cup Yacht Club lost one of its founding members, staff commodores, and veteran racers when Lou Ickler passed away earlier this year. In 1986, after the last race that finished in Nawiliwili, Lou and several other racers (including George Barrett, Sue and Jim Corenman, Bobbi Tosse, and Mary Lovely, wife of current Commodore Jim Quanci) founded PCYC to ensure the future of the race and began its long partnership with Kaneohe Yacht Club as the host finish club. Lou’s faithful support of PCYC included service
as its Commodore in 2008. Lou bought his first boat, a Cal 2-27 in the mid-1970s and stepped up to Ghost, a Morgan 38-2, in 1981. After racing Ghost in the 1986 and 1988 Pac Cups from his home port in California, Lou and Ghost stayed in Hawaii after the 1990 race. They went on to win their division in 1992 and 2004 (with a close second overall in 1992), in both years with an allKaneohe-Yacht-Club crew. Lou served in many capacities at Kaneohe Yacht Club, including as its 2011 Commodore, its Regatta Chair, Kim & Lou Ickler, Pacific Cup 2004 and on its Board of Directors and Photo: Rob Moore Finance and Planning Committee. Lou grew up in the Dakotas, graduated from Yale University with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and served in the US Navy, helping to launch nuclear submarines. He earned an MBA from the University of Chicago, and enjoyed a successful career as a securities analyst, focusing on Silicon Valley during its infancy. No remembrance of Lou would be complete without recognizing his partner and wife, Kim Ickler. Kim supported Lou in all of his endeavors, including as crew and watch captain on Ghost, and as his right hand in his responsibilities as commodore and board and committee member. She continues to be an active PCYC volunteer and KYC officer. Any donations in Lou’s memory can be made to the Hawaii Sailing Foundation or the Kaneohe Yachting Foundation.
