Jim Quanci Commodore Pacific Cup Yacht Club After two years of isolation, it’s really past time for a bit of celebration – and sailors do like to celebrate! Sure, we are not completely thru this “covid time”, but with vaccinations, boosters and the sort being “de rigour”, it does feel safe “enough” to get together as a sailing community and make that big jump from San Francisco to Hawaii that so many of us so much enjoy.

As a “repeat offender” in the PacCup, I must say there is nothing – really nothing – like finishing a long ocean race in Kaneohe. The landscape, the people, the yacht club (hanging out on the lanai having a cold drink overlooking the fleet), the “ ‘ohana” spirit of all the KYC members and volunteers… there is nothing else like it.

Now I have a request for all of you that are both “old hands” at the PacCup and “newbies”.

Take the time to get to know people you don’t know. If you are an experienced hand at the PacCup, during a party, at the dock, wherever you see someone you don’t know, take the time to reach out an introduce yourself. You know what I mean… when you get a sideways glance from someone that appears to be feeling “uncomfortable” in a strange place or crowd. Ask if there is anything they need – whether a hand, some advice or just a smiling face over a cold one. If you are new to the PacCup community, don’t hold back jumping into a group at a party to introduce yourself. Don’t hold back asking for help when you see someone of the dock that looks like a PacCupper (yes sailors like to be independent, but the greatest part of the PacCup is the new people you meet and new friends you make).

Having done many PacCups (too many if you ask my wife), the details of specific races fade in my memory, but it’s the people and friends you meet that are “forever”. People you may have the opportunity to meet again the next day, the next week or in two years for the 2024 race.

There was the “character” who really instigated the creation of the Pacific Cup Yacht Club back in 1988 – George Barrett. There was one of the original PacCup founders Lou Ickler (may he rest in peace) and his wife Kim who raced their Morgan 38 Ghost in several PacCups.

There was the “Tin Man” Ned Flohr (may he rest in peace). Crazy friends that really put the “fun” into the race like Dave Garmin and Jeff Duvall. The “engineers and researchers” including Jim and Sue Corenman, Sally and Stan Honey as well as Michael Moradzedah. The dentist with his Santa Cruz 50 – but who did his first crossing on a Newport 30 – Bob Nance and his “sidekicks” John Dillow and Mel. The doublehanded “couples” Rowena Carlson (our Vice Commodore) and her husband Robb Walker, Melinda and Bill Erkelens, Amanda and Steve Kleha. The boat designers including Carl Schumacher (may he rest in peace) and Jim Antrim. The folks that really help “organize” the PacCup but are also great sailors including Bobbi Tosse, Bob and Betty Gray, Harold Marsh, Pat Lowther. And recently getting to know some “younger folks” like Hawkeye King, Cory Schillaci, and Becca Hinden (our Rear Commodore).

And all the folks from Hawaii we would never have met and become such good friends with over the years including Bo Wheeler and his wife Marcy Fleming, the Starrs, Dave and Nancy Nottage (and large family), and the list goes on.

So… whether you are racing on a boat, or family or friends supporting a boat, welcome to the PacCup “family” and I will do my best to get to know and befriend several of you during this running of the 2022 PacCup! Now its your turn to do the same.

ABOUT PCYC

The Pacific Cup Yacht Club was formed to run the Pacific Cup race from San Francisco Bay to Hawaii. Originally a loose organization operating out of Ballena Bay Yacht Club, the club incorporated in the 1980s to take firmer control of the race and its finances.

The members and board of the club are firmly committed to running a race that is competitive, fun, and safe, and operate the race with a focus on preparation and openness to a wide range of entrants, from tiny double handers to mega yachts and from family adventures to well-tuned racing syndicates.

he 2022 Pacific Cup marks the launch of our official Pacific Cup Environmental Partnership program.

This year, we are working with four leading marine conservation non-profits to lessen our environmental impact, helping to raise awareness about how individual sailors can make a difference on a day-to-day basis and promote the efforts of those working hard to protect the oceans and marine habitats that we love.

Sailors for the Sea Powered by Oceana, is the leading ocean conservation organization uniting sailors and boaters around the world to work together to protect and restore the world’s oceans.

In 2006, Sailors for the Sea launched their Clean Regattas program, the world’s leading sustainability certification for any water-based sailing or boating event, which supplies a framework of twenty best practices for organizers to run a more sustainable event, such as reducing single-use plastics, protecting known marine habitats, and employing clean race technology.

Pacific Cup is vying for Gold-standard Clean Regatta certification, which is one of the highest-level certifications based on level of impact and difficulty to implement. This achievement is particularly significant given the Pacific Cup’s decentralized venue organization across yacht clubs and U.S. states. Some of the efforts we have made include the reduction of single-use plastics, eliminating straws at our venues, promoting water refill stations at all ports of departure and arrival, and accepting tamper-proof seals for emergency-use water to enable that these containers can be reused.

It is our hope our efforts will inspire race organizers at other events across the Bay and beyond to adopt some of the best practices we have been able to enact with the Pacific Cup. Additionally, we encourage sailors to become members of Sailors for the Sea’s Green Boating program, which provides resources and knowledge so individual boaters can take action on a day-to-day basis to protect our oceans for future generations.

Rounding out our Environmental Partner program are three non-profits, the Ocean Voyages Institute, The Marine Mammal

Our wait is over and the Pacific Cup 2022 race is a go! You can find no happier people to welcome you than all your friends at Kaneohe Yacht Club, your home away from home! We know that your journey will be taxing, following months (or years) of drilling and exercising, and fine tuning your boat and readying your crew to complete this crossing. However, once across the Pacific, you will find paradise—KYC—at the end of your PACCUP rainbow. Our escort teams will be afloat, ready to guide you into our safe moorings upon your arrival.

And what a stay this will be! You will find plenty around the club grounds to enjoy, including adult and kiddie pools, two racquet sport courts, and our excellent galley and bar. Please extend our aloha to include those of your family and friends who wish to travel and join us in welcoming you and your crew to Hawaii.

While I am sure our hospitality is the best around, you are still urged to venture out to sample all the 50th state offers. Just ask and we will point you toward attractions on the water, alongside our beautiful beaches or within the many venues available yearround.

I am very happy to be welcoming the Pacific Cup competitors to the Richmond Yacht Club as they prepare for the start. Our Harbormaster, Danny Harris has been working hard to find berthing for some of the out-of-town boats. We have many Richmond Yacht Club boats entered and our docks have been buzzing with preparations for the race.

We all know it has been a tough couple of years, things are starting to feel more normal here at Richmond Yacht Club.

Hopefully we can show our typical Richmond Yacht Club hospitality this year on the Riviera. We did manage to run our famous Wednesday Night Beer Can races through most of Covid. Please feel free to come sail in one before the start, they are very low-key and fun. We started actually having competitors enter on-line so we could track them. But if you are only doing one or two just contact the PRO, Eric Arens and he can get you signed-up.

A Look at the 2022 PacCup

H

ow to best describe this year’s Pacific Cup? Diverse. A number of “women only” boats, two entries from the Great Lakes, a large fleet of small under 30 foot boats most of which are double-handed, a good dose of mid-sized boats that are family operations, two turboed Volvo 70s duking it out for first to finish, a handful of over fifty year-old Cal 40s, a few woodies, and more.

As you might imagine, this year’s race is a “participation rebound” driven by Covid that has the race at “full capacity” and likely to have 72 boats on the starting line – about the same number of starters as the prior largest PacCup that took place at the turn of the century – 2000.

With this fleet there is no shortage of stories, but let’s look at some of what is in my opinion some of the most interesting boats and rivalries.

I believe our only “Woodie” this year is Marc Andrea Klimaschewski and David Rogers of Sloop Tavern Yacht Club racing Moonshine the plywood Dogpatch 26, a boat that won the Pacific Cup overall back in the 1990s in the hands of Bill and Melinda Erkelens. You might wonder about sailing over 2000 miles in a small light plywood boat like Moonshine, but Moonshine knows the way this being her third PacCup. This year Bill and Melinda are racing their Moore 24 Foamy. Repeat PacCup racer Andrew Hamilton, who in 2000s did the PacCup on his Moore 24 Bar-ba-loot, is this year racing on the four-time PacCup racer, and repeat first in class winner, the Donovan 30 Wolfpack, that was previously campaigned by the Erkelens. This is all a bit incestuous isn’t it? Or is it “musical chairs”?

The four boat Moore 24 fleet also includes prior PacCup overall PHRF winner Karl Robrock on his steady steed Snafu. Hey what is not to like about racing to Hawaii and shipping your boat…

An interesting coincidence is that two prior owners of Moonshine, Bill and Melinda Erkelens, and Andrew Hamilton, are in this year’s race with Bill and Melinda on their Moore 24 Foamy and Andrew on the Erkelens prior four-time PacCup racer, the Donovan 30 Wolfpack. This is all a bit incestuous isn’t it? The four boat Moore 24 fleet also includes prior PacCup overall PHRF winner Karl Robrock on his steady steed Snafu.

Hey what is not to like about racing to Hawaii and shipping your boat back for less than the cost of a single sail on some of the larger boats?

How about the “all women” and “women skippered” boats? “Kynntana,” a Freedom 38 with an all women crew is led by Carliane Johnson (Carliane raced the boat in the singlehanded transpacific yacht race several years back) out of Half Moon Bay. Lori Tewksbury and Catherine Meyer will doublehand the Express 27 “Hang 20”. Erica Mattson Siegel, with her navigator Robin Jeffers, is sailing her Moore 24 “Accelerando”.

And then come the “family operations” which I have a soft spot for having done numerous PacCups with my wife and sons. “Alternate

Reality” is a triple handed Express 27 with a father and two sons, “the Jensen trio”. Another family “trio,” the Floyd’s, are aboard Sacagawea, their Jeanneau 349 out of South Beach Yacht Club. From the Pacific Northwest we have the wife and husband doublehanded team of Christina and Justin Wolfe on their J/111 “Raku”. AThen there is the father-daughter doublehanded team Brian and Amanda Turner on their Beneteau 10R CruzSea Baby (I hear Amanda wants to get it done before heading off to college). And the three Laffitte’s – yet another “trio”, on the J/125 Hamachi out of Corinthian Yacht Club, Seattle.

The Schumacher 46 Surprise is run by the father-daughter skippernavigator team of Bob and Rebecca “Becca” Hinden (Becca is also the Rear Commodore of PCYC). Becca raced triple handed in the 2018 PacCup aboard her Express 27 Bombora so maybe size does matter? I must not forget some of my regular crew who are taking their own boat Rägeboge (“Rainbow” in German) to Hawaii this year. Its yet another family “trio” Heinz and Raffi Baumann (father and son) along with Raffi’s mom Andrea Geisinger on their Halberg Rassy 38. What is likely the youngest “driver” in the race is thirteen-year-old Giuseppe “Peppe” Lavelle with his father Phil on their Cal 40 Duende (that’s a mighty large tiller that Peppe has mastered).

I am sure I missed a few more “family” connections as there are so many.

Another interesting “story” are the two old friends – Jim Antrim (longtime member of the PacCup technical committee) and Buzz Blackett (past PCYC Commodore). They are both “over seventy years old” so easily win “oldest average crew age” on board the Antrim 27 ‘io (Buzz’s boat designed by Jim). You would think they are old enough to know better than crossing on ocean on a wee wisp of a boat.

The dueling turboed Volvo 70s will likely be the first boats to cross the finish line in Kaneohe - Roy P. Disney’s Pyewacket 70 and David & Peter Askew’s Wizard (Wizard won the Volvo Ocean Race known as Groupama 4). Battle of the Titans!

Too many good stories… too many good people… too many interesting boats… and not enough room on this page to write about more than just a handful. I encourage you to meet as many fellow racers as you can to both hear their stories of adventure on the high seas – and share your own adventures with them. After all, that is what the PacCup is all about… making good friends and learning and telling great sea stories.

Oh, and getting to know their all-important “support teams” – their families - too!

How to Watch T

the 2022 Pacific Cup

he wonderful thing for participants in the Pacific Cup is that the race is well offshore. The challenge for spectators is that the race is … well … offshore.

So how do we watch the race and cheer for our favorite entry?

Before the start: check our website and subscribe to our social media. We maintain presences on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and, of course, PacificCup.org. Visit PacificCup.org/follow for links to all of these.

At the start: If you are local, you can come to the waterfront near Saint Francis Yacht Club on any of our starting days to see the start. Space on the club’s race deck is limited, but the waterfront area is wide open, as is the beach slightly to the north. A vantage point midway across the Golden Gate Bridge can be quite inspiring (though one friend of ours was “checked on” by bridge authorities after she seemed to have lingered there for a disturbing length of time.)

For a full day, snag a spot on the Marin Headlands.

Conventional race strategy will take many starters right up against the northern shore of the exit from the Bay, so your headlands picnic should have plenty of visual drama.

All too soon, the boats will sail out of sight, and we’ll have to rely on technology for a week or so.

During the race: We’ll be posting frequent updates about the

race, including words from our racers, on our website and social media. One of our most popular attractions is the tracker, using satellite-based devices from YBTracking and updating boat positions each hour or less. To preserve the competitive nature of offshore racing, these positions may be on a time-delay (see the inset).

We’ve found that, as the race goes on, the reports from the offshore competitors become more interesting and fanciful as the combination of exhilaration and sleep deprivation kicks in.

At the finish: The finish is offshore, at a virtual finish line. A few boats may venture out to see these intrepid ocean-crossers come in, and a few more may escort the finishers through the channel to Kaneohe Yacht Club. The prize position, however, is at the docks, where the arrivals will be inspected, photographed, and warmly greeted by Kaneohe Yacht Club’s Leis and Trays Committee.

The tracker should be in real time for the finishers on the way in, and you can even follow them using the boats’ AIS transmissions, updated every minute or so using the link at PacificCup.org/follow.

We’ll continue to post updates and pictures all the way to the awards ceremony. Livestreaming and video availability will be announced as we approach our event dates.

WHY TIME-DELAYED POSITIONS? Ocean racing differs from most yacht racing in that the competitors rarely see each other after the start.

This adds a competitive dimension.

You only learn periodically what your competitor has done, so, rather than just matching their moves, you need to decide for yourself what to do.

Back in the “olden days”, you might learn the other boats’ positions once a day or less.

Today, realtime tracking would make it possible to have a “virtual eye” on the fleet 24/7. This kind of coverage, however, would require the tacticians to stay awake full-time and would eliminate that strategic guessery that many ocean racers relish. For the 2022 Pacific Cup, the time delay will vary based on the stage of the race, with realtime positions being provided near the finish and possibly near the start.

Meet the Winners 2018

I

n 2013, a group of friends from Shelter Island, NY began exploring the idea of finding a suitable boat and entering the 2015 Transatlantic Race. They got some help from friends in Newport, RI and Shelter Island Transatlantic Partners was formed to purchase the first Prospector, a Carrol Marine Farr 60.

A crew was formed, and the team set out competing in bucket list ocean races and regattas including the Caribbean 600, The Transatlantic Race, Annapolis to Newport, the Fastnet Race, Middle Sea Race and Les Voiles de St. Barth.

In August 2016, the program purchased a Mills 68 built in 2008 by New England Boatworks and designed by Mark Mills to extend the program and compete at a higher level. A tested and true racing machine.

After a shakedown regatta at the 2016 Rolex Maxi Cup in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, the team put up impressive results in the Key West Feeder Race and the Pineapple Cup. In the 2016 California Offshore Week they finished 2nd overall ORR and 1st place ORR-A. In the 2018 Puerto Vallarta regatta they finished 2nd in ORR 1 and 6th place overall. At the Islands Race 2018 they finished 3rd in ORR and 6th place overall, and, of course, they finished in 1st place in the Pacific Cup and 2nd in the BMW Division. They wrapped up 2018 with the Rolex Sydney Hobart race where they finished in 3rd in ORC 2 and 7th in line honors.

A fun group of sailors doing what they love to do and they are one big family according to them all. What could be better?!

Pacific Cup Weather & Tactics

Stan Honey has navigated in 23 Hawaii races, winning line-honors or class 14 times. As navigator, Stan has set 7 records in Hawaii races including single-handed, double-handed, and multiple fully-crewed records for monohulls to Hawaii. In 1996, Stan and Sally (Lindsay Honey) won the Pacific Cup overall, sailing their Cal 40 Illusion doublehanded.

Overall race structure and necessary decisions

The primary feature that determines the tactics in a Hawaii race is the Pacific High. There is no wind in the center of the high, and increasing wind as you get farther south, to a degree. The central question concerning course selection is: how close to sail to the high, or how many extra miles to sail in order to stay farther from the high?

In years when the Pacific High is weak (or weakening), zonal, and positioned well south, there can be strikingly more wind to the south, and the trades well to the south can be quite strong. There have been Hawaii races where yachts that are 10 miles to the south of competitors can experience one knot more wind. A high performance boat, in one knot more wind may sail 1/2 knot faster, and therefore would gain 12 miles per day on the northern competitor. Although the gain is less for heavier boats, it may still be a significant factor if the northern boats are in sufficiently light wind. This condition can persist for the entire middle third of the race. Note that all yachts in this middle third of the race are nearly fetching the finish on starboard gybe, so the boats caught too far north cannot gybe out of their predicament without sailing a dramatically unfavored angle, and passing far astern of the competitors to the south.

Occasionally, however, the Pacific High will be strong (or strengthening), and located far to the north. In these conditions, it IS possible to be too far south. The boats that are farther north will not only get more wind, but will sail the shorter distance. Typically in these sorts of years, the wind stays “reachy” throughout the middle third of the race, so the boats that paid extra distance to get south cannot even “cash in” the southing and reach up in front of the northern boats, because everyone is reaching fast.

You need to pick the right slot in order to win your race.

The start and exit from the Bay

Get a conservative start. It is senseless to risk a foul or collision at the start of a 2000 mile race, so don’t get swept up in the competition for the best start. The start is generally scheduled for an ebb tide so boats tack promptly after the start and spread out across the bay. A conservative start is relatively inexpensive because you will be able to get clear air soon after the start as the boats spread out. Tack shortly after the start, and take long tacks across the center of the bay in order to stay in the favorable current. Pass under the bridge at mid-span.

Outside the Bridge, if you can see Alcatraz you are typically still in the favorable ebb. Pay attention and stay in the current. It often makes sense, however, to sail close to Point Bonita and tack to starboard there.

The boats that tack to starboard close to Bonita often get the veer and the increased wind sooner than the boats in mid-channel. In particular don’t sail down the coast and get stuck in the Montara Hole.

Race to the location where the synoptic wind will blow all night.

Most years that is equivalent to racing to SouthEast Farallon.. The best source of data useful to determine where the inside edge of the synoptic wind will be the evening of the start, and the quickest route to get there, is the HRRR grib data. HRRR grib files are legal to access during the race so long as you retrieve them from a free source. Saildocs is one example of a free source but there are others.

Once you get to the synpotic wind, generally in the vicinity of SE Farallon, you need to work out your overall race tactics. The course that you select for the first night and the next day will determine your tactics for the rest of the race, and your result.

The three portions of the Pacific Cup: It is helpful to think of the Pacific Cup in three sections:

1. the windy reach to the ridge; 2. “slotcars” through the middle third; and 3. the run for the last third..

The Pacific High nearly always has a ridge extending from its southeast corner. On the weather map this is visible as a “U” shape in the isobars on the southeast corner of the high. After leaving coastal waters, you will have a windy reach for a couple of days, depending on your yacht’s speed, but when you get to the ridge, the wind will lighten and veer very quickly. Within 6 hours after you initially set the spinnaker, the wind will lift and you will be running on your downwind polars in much lighter air. You just crossed the ridge.

The most critical decision of the Pacific Cup is where to cross the ridge. The reason this is critical is, once you get to the ridge and the wind veers, it is difficult to get farther south without giving up miles. It never pays to sail lower than your optimum downwind vmg angle, and at this point in the race you can’t gybe (onto the dramatically unfavored port gybe) without huge penalty. That is why the middle third of the race is called “slotcars.”

As you left the coast you made your decision where you wanted to cross the ridge, you sailed there, and now you have to live with it for four or five days. If you are too far to the north, you will be slowly destroyed by the yachts to the south of you who have more wind, and there is nothing that you can do about it. You cannot gybe (without huge penalty), and it never pays to sail lower than your vmg angle. If you are substantially too far north, you will experience torture. As the wind gets lighter, you have to sail higher and higher, until you “spin out” up into the high. When you have to gybe to avoid total calm, your angle on port gybe will have you heading due south, far behind your competitors’ transoms. The “slotcars” leg ends when the wind eventually veers far enough so that both gybes are symmetrical around the course to the finish, allowing you to sail either gybe. So in summary, the goal is to pick a “slot” such that by the time the wind is getting light, it has veered enough so that you can gybe onto port on a good angle. The boats that pick a slot that is too far N have to gybe out too early on a terrible angle.

The boats that pick a slot that is too far S will have the boats in the ideal slot (to the north of them) gybe before them and cross their bows. Note that routing software always suggests a course that is too close to the high. The software doesn’t take into account light spots that force you to sail higher, and once you’re too far north, the lighter air forces you still farther north.

The final third of the race is “the run.” This is why we sail Pacific Cups. The wind picks up as you approach the Islands, and you get to practice your helmsmanship surfing tradewind swells. Generally the right hand side of the course is favored in the final third of the race, because the wind typically slowly veers as you sail west.

Do keep an eye out for tropical depressions or their weaker siblings which are sometimes referred to as “inverted troughs.” They are both visible as omega shaped waves in the isobars in the tropics.

If you will be approaching the finish following an inverted trough, or a tropical, approaching the finish from the right hand corner works particularly well as there is often a veer and light air east of an inverted trough. If you will lead an inverted trough or tropical to Hawaii, then it often pays to gybe down in front of it because there is often more wind and a back in the wind west of a tropical or inverted trough.

Most years when there is not a tropical behind you, the right corner pays. Favor starboard gybe until you can nearly lay the Islands, and then approach Oahu on port gybe. Be sure to account for the fact that the wind will continue to veer, and do not overstand Kaneohe.

Approaching the Finish

Arrange your final gybe or two so that you pass 10 miles due upwind of the finish. Then sail half the remaining distance on starboard gybe, and make your final 5 mile approach on port gybe.

As you approach the finish take bearings with your hand bearing compass on major landmarks and plot the resulting lines of position on your GPS track on the chart or chartplotter. Those bearings will be a useful backup but they will also keep your “head in the game” and will calibrate your understanding of what you are seeing on the shore.

In the daytime, take bearings on: Makapu’u (the left edge of Oahu) Mokapu (the turtle’s head) the giant ping pong balls near Pyramid Rock (labeled “radomes” on chart) Pyramid Rock (white house with diagonal stripes on conical rock) At night, take bearings on: Makapu’u Pt Lt (occulting 10s, 19M range) Marine AeroBeacon, sometimes obscured (alt green/white or red/white) Pyramid Rock Lt (Fl 6s, 10M range) Remember that the reef isn’t far beyond the finish line, so douse your spinnaker promptly. If for some reason you have trouble dousing your spinnaker or the halyard jams, gybe onto starboard and sheet in your mainsail. If you can maintain a beam reach, even with the kite flogging in the rigging, you will stay clear of the reef.

Squalls

Typically, you will get tradewind squalls for the last three or four nights of the race. They only occur at night, starting about midnight and continuing and strengthening until dawn. If there is a moon, the squalls are visible for miles because of their height. If there is no moon, you can often detect squalls behind you by watching for the absence of stars. If you have radar, the rain in squalls is easily detectable. Each squall on a given night will behave similarly to its predecessor, except it will be a little stronger. So “go to school” on each squall in order to sort out how to best take advantage of the next one. If one squall provided more fun than you really wanted, douse the kite and wing out a jib for the next one. If a squall is approaching, and you get rain before the wind, prepare for lots of wind. At dawn the squalls vanish, but leave calm zones around and particularly behind them. These calm zones are worth taking great care to avoid.

In contrast to popular perception, squalls do not generally work the way “catspaws” do. Catspaws have diverging wind in front of them.

Tradewind squalls at night often have converging winds at their leading edge. The wind converges because there is an updraft in front of the squall. In addition, the average wind in the squall is generally veered

about 15 degrees or so to the right of the prevailing surface wind, and the squall itself moves about 15 degrees to the right of the path of the surface wind. Behind squalls the wind is light, particularly near dawn.

If you want to race aggressively, watch for squalls and gybe to get in front of them. As they overtake you, gybe to port. Stay on port gybe during the squall, sailing as deep as you dare, and then gybe back to starboard only when the squall has passed completely over you and your wind speed and angle have returned to the prevailing conditions.

If you gybe back to starboard gybe too early, you run the risk of crossing behind the squall and getting into the light air in the wake of the squall. Boats that sail downwind at the speed of a SC70 or TP52 can sail fast enough to stay in the accelerated wind in front of the squall for hours. This requires jibing back and forth in front of the squall, jibing about every 15 minutes. Each gybe “back” towards the squall will be at a horrible angle, because of the way that the wind “toes in” in front of the squall, but gybe back anyway. The additional wind velocity in front of the squall makes up for the horrible angle. If you are racing aggressively, you may gybe over 25 times in a Pacific Cup, with many gybes taking place at night in squalls.

Port gybe is more effective to avoid the calm behind a squall because the squall itself is moving to the right of the path of the surface wind, so port gybe allows you to diverge rapidly from the light air area behind the squall. It is perilous to exit a squall on starboard gybe because of the risk of getting becalmed behind the squall, particularly near dawn.

Weather Information

The best source of weather data is the HRRR grib files for the region inshore of the Farallones, and from GFS grib files for the remainder of the race. The NAM grib files can give you a good forecast for local winds approaching the finish.

If you have the ability to receive weathermap images via weatherfax or satellite, the 500mb progs and surface progs are worth reviewing.

If there are any signs of a tropical storm, be sure to listen to the voice or text forecasts from the NOAA National Hurricane Center.

The GFS works pretty well for the location of tropical storms but underestimates their wind speed. The experts at the NHC provide the best data.

Family Rivalry, Family Love

E

very family has its quirky traditions. Many come together for major celebrations and holidays, and attend sporting events together, cheering loudly for the family’s team. I’m very fortunate to belong to a family that routinely runs into each other in the Richmond Yacht Club parking lot and then heads out on the Bay to compete in the same regattas. We congratulate each other on victories and derive mild satisfaction in triumphing over one another. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area sailing community where upon introducing myself a typical reply was usually “Oh! Is Greg/ Fred/Will your dad/uncle/brother?” Answer: “Greg is my dad, Fred is my uncle, Will is my cousin.” When Will and I are on the same course we’re frequently on the same boat. Our overlapping time on the ocean began when Will was tactician on the Schock 40 Secret Squirrel and I raced my first Farallones Race at age 14. Pac Cup was really an anomaly for us because it pitted us against each other in a one design fleet.

Will and longtime boat partner Zack Anderson decided to enter Motorcycle Irene in the 2018 Pacific Cup sometime after Andy Goodman and I submitted our initial entry fee for the race and were making plans to overhaul the Loose Cannon for the adventure. Andy and I could never agree on whose idea it was to do Pac Cup doublehanded. When things were going slowly with the full deck strip/overhaul and complete boat rerig that we completed on our own, it always seemed like it was the other person’s idea. One detail I’m sure of is that sailing the race doublehanded on the Goodman family’s Express was always a dream of Noe, Andy’s late brother. Making that dream a reality was at the core of the Loose Cannon program.

2018 was a special race for the Express 27 class. We had seven Expresses start and finish the edition, six racing doublehanded and one triplehanded. Outside of the Paxton Family rivalry, the Express extended family was drawing attention and setting up to be a 2,000nm one design showdown. Regardless of the healthy rivalries that had matured or formed in the years leading up to the race, the morning the Express fleet headed to the start was emotional. The forecast offshore the first 24 hours called for 30 knots with a tropical storm spinning into the middle of the course and dissipating, creating a massive disruption the fleet would have to navigate. Years of preparation concluded with a round of hugs and heartfelt wishes for everyone to arrive safely in Kaneohe Bay. Uncle Fred towed Motorcycle Irene and Loose Cannon to the start on City Front, and we were off.

As many recall, Motorcycle Irene crushed us in the first 24 hours of the race and maintained a healthy lead for the next few days. We were lagging behind when the fleet entered the disorganized area left behind by the dissolved low and began to slow. At one point, Loose Cannon was hard on the wind on port tack, pointed towards Hawaii, roughly 900nm into the race. (Which is not the goal.)

Even after falling behind the first few days, Andy and I knew we had a realistic chance of being the first place Express 27. When day 5 dawned we were working our way through the unsettled area of light, variable winds that we had expected in the wake of the dissipating storm. The 0800 position report told us that Motorcycle Irene was mere miles ahead.

That afternoon, while (finally) ghosting along in a few knots of breeze, Andy spotted a boat slatting a few miles ahead. We confirmed it was the Irene, and altered course to the south to avoid the cloud cover they were stuck under. The next position report had us ahead and to leeward of the Irene with the tradewinds filling in around us. We were able to maintain the lead from that point onward.

In this family we race for docklines. As in, the sacred privilege of standing on the bulkhead, showered and rested, waiting to catch your family member’s docklines as they arrive after you. In our family this privilege usually belongs to Will. There were so many emotions going through our hearts when Will and Zack pulled Irene alongside the bulkhead in Kaneohe. Being able to hug the two of them, knowing they were safe, and finally being able to talk about everything that had happened over the past 12 days was an incredible feeling. The four of us laughed about how much time we spent guessing what the other pair was strategizing during the entire race. Will and I agreed the race had felt like dueling against ourselves.

The 2018 Express battle royale, featuring the Paxtons, is the family connection that stands out from that year’s race. But for me, synonymous with the 2018 edition is another family connection.

Lester Robertson, who raced the 1980 Singlehanded Transpac on a Moore 24, raced the 2018 edition DH on the one-of-a kind Moore 24 Foamy with crew Randy Parker. Les’ wife, Mary Robertson is my mom’s sister. Les raced the 2018 edition of the race knowing it would likely be one of his last major efforts in the sport. We lost Les in 2019. He is survived by Mary, sons Jack and Sam, and Moore 24s “Legs” and “42.” Sharing the course with Foamy in 2018, and being present to greet them when they arrived at the bulkhead in Kaneohe define this race for me as much as the battle between Motorcycle Irene and Loose Cannon.

Fast forward to Spring 2022. Will and I are co-owners of the Motorcycle Irene and are preparing to defend our Express 27 Nationals title at the end of May. The finer details of the 2018 Pacific Cup are fading into the rearview mirror, as tends to happen with all good races. But this story is one for the ages for our family.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting just about everything in 2020, the 2018 race is the last Pac Cup on the books. It’s a little strange that no new stories from the race have been written for almost four years. The healthy family rivalries are waiting to surface, new stories are taking shape and are waiting to be written into the living history of the race.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR PACIFIC CUP EXPERIENCE CRUISE THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS

our sailing adventure doesn’t have to end after finishing the Pacific Cup and arriving at the Kaneohe Yacht Club.

You’ll be making landfall in one of the most rewarding cruising grounds in the Pacific, and after sailing 2,500 miles to get here, it would be a shame not to take advantage of all that it offers.

North swells and variable winds plague Hawaii’s waters during the fall, winter and spring, which then limits cruising sailors to a few protected all-weather anchorages. But from May through August, the north swell disappears and the trade winds blow reliably, which opens up many great anchorages throughout the island chain.

Still, Hawaii is a challenging place to sail at any time of the year. The trade winds can be strong, particularly during the summer months when the North Pacific High is deep and stable. These strong trade winds and the seas they build are amplified as they funnel through the narrow channels between the islands and make channel crossings, particularly those in the easterly or upwind direction, bumpy and wet. Protected small boat harbors are scarce and often dilapidated, and there’s little room available for visitors. That’s the down side. The up side is having some spectacular and unspoiled anchorages all to yourself.

Kaneohe Bay, home to Pacific Cup host, Kaneohe Yacht Club, is one of the few fully protected bodies of water in Hawaii. Great anchorages in the seven-mile-long bay include the famous “Sandbar”, Hakipu’u at the westernmost end of the bay, and the leeward side of Coconut Island where you can find shelter from strong trade winds. Other protected summer anchorages on Oahu include Pokai Bay, on Oahu’s western shore and Waimea Bay on the North Shore. You’ve probably seen videos of surfers riding 30-foot waves in Waimea Bay during the winter, however that same bay provides a calm, safe and beautiful cruising anchorage during summer months.

The forbidden island of Niihau is a short day sail to the northwest, and there are many protected anchorages on the island’s west coast. Niihau is a privately owned island, but like all of the Hawaiian Islands, the offshore waters and beaches up to the vegetation line are considered public property and are accessible to all. Because Niihau is seldom visited, the island is great for beachcombing. The author once collected 60 Japanese glass balls (fishing floats) on the beach there in a little over an hour. Endangered Hawaiian monk seals are also frequent visitors to Niihau and it is not unusual to see them basking on the beach or stopping by your boat to check you out.

As Kauai lies in the general direction of the sailing route back to the Mainland, many Transpac and Pacific Cup boats stop for a visit on the way home. Hanalei Bay is a spectacular summer anchorage on Kauai’s north shore, and four miles to the west is Haena, a fully protected and easily entered keyhole in the reef. On the reef outside Haena is “Tunnels”, one of Kauai’s premier surf spots, and directly shoreward from the anchorage is Haena Beach Park and the Haena Dry Cave.

Where to go from Niihau? You could depart for the Mainland or slog back to windward to Kauai or Oahu. Another option is the 300-mile close reach to the Big Island of Hawaii. It takes a couple of days to get there, but is far easier than beating back to Oahu because sheets are eased and you are far enough to leeward of the islands to avoid the strong winds and heavy seas found in the channels between the islands. Once you reach the Big Island, it is downhill all the way back to Oahu!

Haena is the last anchorage before you reach the Na Pali coast - nine miles of some of the most spectacular and photogenic coastline you’ll ever see. While sailing along that coast you will often see hikers on the Kalalau Trail 1,000 feet above you. Those hikers can take three days to reach Kalalau Valley, while the sail down the coast takes just a couple of hours. At the western end of the Na Pali coast is Nualolo, a protected anchorage in the lee of a reef where you’ll find the best snorkeling in the state. Directly ashore lies Nualolo State Park, an abandoned ancient Hawaiian village that can only be reached by boat. The remoteness of

The Big Island’s 14,000-foot Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes shelter the 40-mile-long Kona Coast from the trade winds. Thermal conditions are the norm on this coast, with gentle sea breezes during the day and land breezes at night, making for truly tranquil cruising. Okoe Bay at the remote southern end of the coast is a favorite anchorage. It is common to awake there in the morning to find the boat surrounded by schools of spinner dolphins that have rested for the night in the bay. Snorkeling is outstanding and hiking ashore along the old “Kings Highway” and through the ruins of ancient Hawaiian villages is exhilarating. You can still clearly see the debris

18 PACIFIC CUP 2022 Cruising continued that accumulated at the high water mark 20 feet above sea level during the 2011 tsunami. Great anchorages to the north of Okoe Bay include Honomalino, Kealakekua Bay (where Captain Cook was killed by the Hawaiians), Kiholo, and Nishimura Bay. Crossing the 40-milewide Alinuihaha Channel in the westerly direction is an easy broad reaching day sail. There are good anchorages at La Perouse Bay at the south end of Maui or at Honolua Bay at the north end of the island.

The old whaling port of Lahaina is a must stop. If you’re lucky, the harbormaster might be able to find a temporary berth for you in the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor, or if they are available, you could pick up one of the mooring balls outside of the harbor that Lahaina Yacht Club maintains for visiting yachts. As a last resort you can anchor in the Lahaina roadstead. It is a bit rolly, but the West Maui Mountains block the trade winds so conditions are usually benign.

Kevin Costner’s movie, “Waterworld”. Nestled in among the valleys along these cliffs are two great anchorages, Keawanui and Waikolu. Adjacent to the Keawanui anchorage are sea caves to explore by dinghy and a 100-foot waterfall that empties onto the beach. And keep in mind that the north shore of Molokai is a mere 50 miles away from Kaneohe Yacht Club. But, it’s almost dead to windward from Oahu - not a pleasant trip in heavy trades - but it’s a reasonable sail if the winds back off or shift from their normal easterly direction.

So when you are planning your post-Pacific Cup itinerary in Hawaii you might want to consider an additional Hawaiian Islands cruise as it could be the highlight of your trip. There are some cruising guides available that provide more detailed information to assist you. The Mehaffy cruising guide is a good one, and is available from West Marine or online bookstores.

AWARDS

T

he Pacific Cup Yacht Club provides outstanding, unique awards. In addition to the perpetual trophies described below, Monkeypod bowls are awarded for achievement in some categories and accompany the perpetuals trophies as a “keeper”. Stately and iconic, the Monkeypod is one of the most cherished trees of Hawaii—enhancing landscapes and streets, providing shade from the tropical heat, and serving as a keen reminder of the islands’ dramatic natural history. Oahu has the largest of the islands’ Monkeypods, sprawling over nearly an acre.

This tree is known in the rest of the tropical world as the Rain Tree (Samanea saman).

The bowls are turned by Robert Butts, one of Hawaii’s premier woodcrafters and can be found on the web at www.rwbutts. com. Although today, most Monkeypod bowls and platters sold at retail in Hawaii come from the Philippines, our Pacific Cup bowls this year have a very special local connection, as described by our woodcrafter, Bob Butts: “The Monkeypod has some history with it.

The trees were taken down a few years ago for the expansion of the Ala Moana Shopping Center, they were located on Ala Moana Boulevard and Piikoi Streets, and were going to be used as flooring in the new additions. The contractors hired a company to cut cants out of the logs but had problems so Indonesia did not make the flooring and Oahu tree recycling got the logs. I got the cut offs.”

As an aside, koa, the native wood used for the last two races, is no longer commercially available.

Division Winners receive very special Weems & Plath clocks of superb quality featuring beautiful nautical designs. The clocks have precisions quartz movements housed in beautiful, solid, forged brass cases, which are hand polished and flawlessly lacquered. Perpetual Trophies

Winners of perpetual trophies may take the Perpetual they are awarded to their home or home yacht club to display until one month prior to the next Pacific Cup race. They also receive a lovely Monkeypod wood bowl as a keeper.

The Pacific Cup is awarded to the winner on corrected time among all mono-hull PCR rating divisions. This trophy is a large bronze cup on a lovely wood base.

The Record Passage Trophy is awarded for the fastest passage on record in the Pacific Cup. This trophy is a half-model of Merlin.

The Fastest Passage Trophy is awarded to the boat in the current race with the shortest elapsed time without time allowance. This trophy is an etching on glass featuring a boat surfing a Pacific swell.

The Bill Lee “Wizard” Trophy is awarded to the first Bill Lee designed boat to finish on corrected time. This trophy is a half model of Merlin with spinnaker flying.

The Moore 24 Trophy is awarded to the first Moore 24 to finish on corrected time. This trophy is a half model of a Moore 24.

The Team Trophy is awarded to the three-yacht team from the same yacht club with the best total performance. This trophy is a bronze sculpture of three dolphins.

The Henri-Lloyd Pacific Cup Navigator’s Trophy is presented to the navigator of a division-winning yacht who is deemed the most skillful in navigation and weather. The judging is done by a panel comprised of all division second place navigators. This trophy is a Wempe Marine-Quartz Chronometer mounted in a mahogany box.

The George R. Barrett Memorial Trophy is awarded by the PCYC Commodore to the individual who exhibits outstanding seamanship as well as distinguished service, dedication, and enthusiasm for the race. This trophy is a beautiful teak sailboat. George is remembered for his leadership in organizing the Pacific Cup Yacht Club, finding sponsorship for the race, and establishing Kaneohe Yacht Club as the finish destination.

The Doug Vann Memorial Trophy is awarded to the volunteer individual selected by Kaneohe Yacht Club who, through their enthusiasm and dedication, best exemplifies the spirit of the “Fun Race to Hawaii.” This trophy consists of one large glass leaping dolphin on a koa wood inlaid base and back.

The Cruising Division includes yachts interested in the voyage but not in competitive racing. Those completing the voyage will receive a Robert Butts Monkeypod Bowl.

The One Design Division winners will receive a Robert Butts Monkeypod Bowl.

The Express 27 Trophy is given to the Express 27 finishing on the fastest corrected time. This one-time award, donated by Bob and Maryann Hinden, is a half-hull model of an Express 27.

The First Hawaiian Boat to Finish is awarded to the first corrected time boat skippered by a full-time resident of Hawaii whose boat is registered and maintained in Hawaii and sailed under the burgee of a Hawaiian yacht club. This is a three-foot-high carved Koa statue of King Kamehameha.

The Division Awards are Weems & Plath clocks presented to first, second, and third place finishers on corrected time.

The Carl Schumacher Trophy is awarded to the first Carl Schumacher designed boat to finish on corrected time. This trophy is a large Koa wood bowl created by Robert Butts.

The PHRF Trophy is awarded to the boat competing in any of the PHRF divisions with the best corrected time of all boats in those divisions. The trophy is a Weems & Plath barometer.

The Bjorn Johnson ORR Trophy is awarded to the boat competing in any of the ORR divisions with the best corrected time of all boats in those divisions. The trophy is a Weems & Plath barometer.

This year, we are dedicating the Offshore Racing Rule (ORR) Trophy to the memory of Bjorn Johnson, who died suddenly at the untimely age of 62. We particularly value Bjorn’s contributions to the sport as the executive director of the Offshore Racing Association that, among other things, maintains the Offshore Rating Rule. As a sailor, Bjorn was the consummate Corinthian Yachtsman, in fact and in spirit. He gave generously and tirelessly of his time and knowledge to the sport of sailing. Bjorn was a champion racing sailor and a passionate cruiser.

As a lifelong sailor his racing accomplishments are too numerous to list. Among the highlights are the almost 20 Newport Bermuda Races, winning the overall trophy on Shere Kahn in the 2001 Bermuda OneTwo, and winning on Snow Lion in the 2015 Transatlantic Race. All who knew him respected him. He will be missed. (Adapted from comments by Michael Millard) The Latitude 38 Performance Trophy is awarded to the yacht with the most convincing win relative to its own division. The trophy is formed from Plexiglas engraved with some of the equations used to determine the award. A slide rule is prominently displayed on the trophy.

The Passage Yachts Nautical Trophy is awarded to the Beneteau boat with the fastest 24-hour passage on elapsed time. The trophy is a Robert Butts Monkeypod Bowl. Both racing and cruising division boats are eligible.

“Best” Awards

The Best First Passage Trophy is awarded to the best passage by a “rookie” yacht and crew as identified by the Race Committee. The trophy is a Robert Butts Monkeypod Bowl.

The Best Prepared Yacht Trophy is awarded to the yacht identified by the Chief Inspector with input from all inspectors that best demonstrates a thorough, thoughtful, and seamanlike preparation for the race, including implementation of the Equipment Requirements. The trophy is a Robert Butts Monkeypod Bowl.

The Best Family Yacht Trophy is awarded to the best performing yacht crewed by family members. The trophy is a Robert Butts Monkeypod Bowl. To be eligible, boats must sign up on the Pacific Cup website on or before the Skippers’ Meeting.

Other prizes may be awarded for notable performance in one of a variety of special categories, some just for fun and some for serious accomplishments during the race. These prizes are announced at the Awards Ceremony.

History of the Pacific Cup

I

n January of 1979, Hal Nelson approached Ballena Bay Yacht Club (BBYC) Commodore Vytas Pazemenas with the idea of starting a low-key, fun race for fully crewed boats from San Francisco to Hawaii. Nelson had been instrumental in bringing PHRF racing to San Francisco Bay and saw that the first single-handed race to Hawaii had just been completed the previous summer. BBYC had a nucleus of members interested in ocean racing, so the timing appeared to be right. BBYC worked with a small but enthusiastic group of volunteers from Kauai’s Nawiliwili Yacht Club to put a race together, setting a finish line on the southeast corner of Kauai. That race became the Pacific Cup. Over the next few years, interest in the race increased rapidly. By the end of 1986, the Pacific Cup was well established with both serious racers and more casual racing cruisers. However, BBYC was finding it difficult to administer what was turning into a major event, especially at a club with many competing activities. In Hawaii, the 1986 race had taxed the facilities of the Nawiliwili Harbor, prompting talk of moving the finish elsewhere in Hawaii.

It looked as if the race might fade away without a committed team to keep it going. On August 4, 1987, George R. Barrett assembled a group of sailors at St. Francis Yacht Club. With the support of some leading participants from prior races and the BBYC organizers, Barrett drafted the Articles of Incorporation for a new club. The Pacific Cup Yacht Club, whose function would be to take over the organization of the race, was born.

A first item of business was the finish line. Talks with Kaneohe Yacht Club, one of the three principal clubs on Oahu that handled the finish of the Transpac race from Los Angeles, led to the important and happy choice of Kaneohe. Barrett had sailed the race as the chartering skipper of Charley, a Holland 67, winning third place in 1986. In 1988, he ran the race from the shore, and he ran it well. George died in the fall of 1988, but the Pacific Cup continues as a living memorial to him.

Over the years, the Pac Cup has evolved with new divisions, new sponsors, and new trophies. What has remained the same is a commitment to safe and enjoyable racing by hundreds of skippers and crew and the participation of an army of volunteers in both California and Hawaii.

Race Highlights 1980 – Race number one. Racing began with one of the roughest crossings in Pac Cup history. Forty yachts started the first Pac Cup on June 15, 1980; only 32 of the boats finished. The three Santana 35s in the race all had damage to their rudders during the first several days. Friendship was picked up by a Navy ship and Raccoon Straights returned to San Francisco with water pouring in a cracked rudder bearing, leaving Wild Hair the only Santana to finish in Hawaii.

The 63-foot yawl Corsair retired from the race and was lost on a shoal on her way back. After the rough weather of the first few days, the winds diminished and only Merlin, the 67-foot Bill Lee ULDB, had the speed to outrun the high-pressure area that moved down on the rest of the fleet. She reached Nawiliwili more than four days ahead of the rest of the fleet to win first to finish as well as first on corrected time.

1982 - Competition intensified among the big boats, although the number of boats racing under the International Ocean Racing (IOR) rule had declined to eight boats from 13 in 1980. Merlin was there again, beating her previous record by 1 hour and 28 minutes in elapsed time to win the San Francisco to Kauai award, but was only able to place sixth on corrected time.

1984 - Merlin again beat her old record and set a new San Francisco to Kauai fastest passage record in elapsed time, 9 days, 7 hours, 49 minutes, once again earning the top trophy. The winners on corrected time were the Freres 36, Surefire, in the IOR division and the Smith 42, Magic Carpet, in PHRF. In the newly added double-handed division, the Express 27, Light’n Up, won, arriving only six hours behind Magic Carpet.

1986 - Merlin set yet another new elapsed time record of 8 days, 14 hours, 53 minutes. On corrected time the Farr 36, Sweet Okole, skippered by Bobbi Tosse, took the last San Francisco to Kauai trophy.

1988 – Light winds. On corrected time, the winner of the inaugural Pacific Cup trophy to Kaneohe Bay was Saraband, a Westsail 32 that had sailed a consistent pace for 14 days, 17 hours elapsed time, an amazing feat. Kathmandu, Phillipe Kahn’s Santa Cruz 70, took first in IOR after her competition got caught too far north and suffered from light winds.

1990 – A race of firsts. After light wind for the first few days, race conditions were generally nice. There were several firsts, including the initiation of staggered starts over a four-day period and a record number of entries that peaked at 53 with 45 actually crossing the starting line.

The first three boats overall represented a complete range of sailboat types: the first being the Lee ULDB, Oaxaca (Santa Cruz 50), the second a medium displacement racer-cruiser, Heart of Gold (Schumacher 50), and the third a heavy displacement cruiser Saraband (Westsail 32).

Oaxaca took the Pacific Cup with the best corrected time.

1992 – A rhumb line race. The first start was windy and the next starts were very slow, but overall, the race was relatively fast with 46 boats starting and 43 finishing. It proved to be a rhumb line race because the Pacific High was quite far north. Some boats successfully chose a great circle route. The two largest boats in the race were double handed – Mongoose (SC 70) and Peregrine (N/M 70). The smallest boat in the fleet, Team Bonzi, a Moore 24, swept the top awards, taking both the double-handed and the Pacific Cup trophies. Fleet second place and first in IMS went to Ghost, the Morgan 38 from Kaneohe [skippered by Lou Ickler].

1994 – Records fall. An all-time high of 58 boats started, with 52 finishing. Steve Rander’s Wylie 70, Rage, broke Merlin’s longstanding elapsed time record by finishing in 8 days, 7 hours and 13 minutes.

The small boats dominated the corrected time standings, with Bill and Melinda Erkelen’s home-built Dogpatch 26, Moonshine, winning Division B, the Double Handed class, and the overall Pacific Cup. 1996 – More records set. With starting conditions a repeat of 1992, the first starters blasted away from the coast, while the next three divisions were wondering if they would ever make it past the Farallones. Conditions were right for Rage, which broke her own 1994 record with a new record of 7 days 22 hours. Not only did the speed record fall, but a record 60 boats made it to Kaneohe. Among them was the Cal 40 Illusion, a tried-and-true California-to-Hawaii veteran, sailed by Stan Honey and Sally Lindsay, sweeping the double handed fleet and winning the overall Pacific Cup. 1998 – Yet another record. The Pac Cup speed record was demolished by Roy Disney’s Santa Cruz 70 turbo, Pyewacket, as she took more than a full day off the record, finishing in 6 days, 14 hours, and 23 minutes. Pacific Cup veteran Bob Nance won first overall on handicap in the Newport 30, Water Pik.

History continued 2000 – GO SLOW was the theme. The 2000 race was so slow that several boats floated around the Farallon Islands for three days in the early part of the race and 27 of the 80 boats entered did not finish within the time limit. The overall winner was Octavia, a Santa Cruz 50, with a remarkable elapsed time of 10 days, 12 ½ hours. The fastest passage was claimed by Phillipe Kahn’s Andrews 70 Pegasus.

2002 – Experience is rewarded. Normal weather returned, with most boats finishing within a few days of each other. Skip Allan on the Wylie Custom 27, Wildflower, proved that experience (over 25 ocean passages) does count. Wildflower won not only the double- handed division but also came in first overall to take home the Pacific Cup. 2004 – Fastest passage record demolished. The day before the first start, the weather service issued gale warnings for the area of the Farallones, which proved overly pessimistic. The race was marked by uneventful weather after that, with the high filling in after the first two days, making it a slow race. The overall winner was the Santa Cruz 52, Winnetou, and eighteen years after her first Pacific Cup race, the Morgan 38, Ghost, won Division A. The Pacific Cup’s first female duo Silvia Seaberg and Synthia Petroka won the double-handed division on Eyrie, a Hawkfarm 28, with an elapsed time of 14 days and 4 hours.

Mari Cha IV, a custom 147 footer, set a new elapsed record of 5 days, 5 hours, 38 minutes, 10 seconds.

2006 – Another slow race. The position of the high, and the direction it was moving, made it a guessing game. Most boats tried a course close to the rhumb line, but after the first few days changed their minds and tried to go south. It took 9 to 12 days for most of the boats to finish, and after 15 days there were still 9 boats that had not finished.

The Santa Cruz 52, Lightning, took home both the best elapsed time trophy and the Pacific Cup, and Jim Gregory’s Schumacher 52, Morpheus, took the inaugural Schumacher trophy.

2008 - A full fleet – from start to finish. Nearly 70 entries, with every monohull that entered starting, and every boat that started, finishing. Philippe Kahn’s Open 50, Pegasus, set a new double-handed record of just over seven days, fifteen hours. Once again the Pacific Cup went to double handers, Joby Easton and Bill Huseby on the Cascade 36, Rain Drop.

2010 – A Northerly course. As a testament to the impact of weather information and routing software available to sailors, virtually all racers adopted their northerly courses early in the race. Back on shore, race officials were startled to see, day after day, that the courses taken were all north of the rhumb line. The final group of starters, the fastest boats in Division E, took the northerly plan to an extreme, in some cases sailing slightly away from Hawaii as they positioned themselves north for their drive to the finish line 2,070 miles away. Limit, a R/P 63 was the fastest boat on elapsed time, and Horizon, a Santa Cruz 50 was not only first to finish, but also took home the Pacific Cup. 2012 – Mid-July start. The July 16 start date was the latest ever, designed to avoid the light and uncertain winds that are often found earlier in the summer. Pac Cuppers in the early part of the week ventured out into a near desert of wind and a generally benign crossing.

Kevin P. Welch in ICON finished in 7 days 16 hours 33 minutes and took the Fastest Passage trophy. Swazik, a Swan 45, took home the Pacific Cup for her eight-day, 22-hour crossing.

2014 – A mixed bag. It was a race slow to start and wild to finish. As in 2012, the early days of the race tested skill and patience as tacticians, weather-guessers, and sail handlers worked to eke every bit of speed out of the light and variable winds. Daily runs in the of

range of 30 miles vexed the ordinarily swift boats. Several days after the starts, the band of light air relented, allowing a few, then more boats through to more reliable breezes and a race “the way it is supposed to be.” Unlike 2012, the fleets split widely with some betting on a far north course, and others on the south – the North won. But easy sailing was not to last. Surprisingly boisterous weather greeted the early finishers, with heavy winds and lumpy seas.

2016 –This was the heaviest year many participants can recall with records set and broken (along with sails set and broken) in many divisions. For many boats, the traditional mid-race easy downwind run was replaced with a scramble to maintain control while getting maximum speed out of the strong winds. At the finish, later boats were advised to stand off until conditions improved, as approaching, much less passing through, Kaneohe’s reef was inadvisable. The little Moore 24 Mas! enjoyed a clean sweep: Pacific Cup Winner, Division Winner, Best PHRF, Moore 24 Record, and Team Trophy for Richmond Yacht Club. New records were set by the Santa Cruz 50 Hula Girl and by Manouch Moshayedi’s Rio 100 for the course, with a stunning time of 5 days 02:41:13. Though the arrivals came fast and furious at the docks, KYC rallied to put on a warm welcome for all.

2018 – With a scattered set of weather systems, the tracks of the boats looked like the “good old days.” Breaking from a recent trend where most of the boats, using the same (accurate) weather information and routing tools, sailed in near lockstep, the canny racers of 2018 adopted a wide range of courses. In contrast to the stormy 2016 finish, we saw our boats arrive in fair weather. Pyewacket took ORR honors, splitting the glory with Prospector, who took the Pac Cup. Now-Commodore Jim Quanci’s Green Buffalo won her division as well as taking the “Fastest Family Afloat” prize. Andy Goodman and Julia Paxton, aboard Loose Cannon, beat out Julia’s cousin Will Paxton aboard Zachary Anderson’s Motorcycle Irene to top the sixboat Express 27 fleet and win the PHRF overall title.

2020 – The year that wasn’t. With COVID raging around the globe, Pac Cup organizers crossed their fingers and hoped it would die out before the race had to be canceled. As other major races began to drop out, and the pandemic showed no sign of letting up, we reluctantly made the call to skip the race that year. We offered existing entrants to simply roll their entry to the following year, with a large number taking the offer!

2022 – With the rollovers and the strong pent-up demand, as of this writing we have our largest enrolled fleet ever, with nearly 80 boats signed up to be at the start line. KYC, our gracious finish line host, has agreed not to count boats with an existing Hawaiian berth against our normal 70 boat limit this year, so we may be setting records in more ways than one…. In Memoriam Louis Harold Ickler III A Pacific Cup Yacht Club Founding Member, Commodore, and Racer October 20, 1939 - February 19, 2022

P

acific Cup Yacht Club lost one of its founding members, staff commodores, and veteran racers when Lou Ickler passed away earlier this year. In 1986, after the last race that finished in Nawiliwili, Lou and several other racers (including George Barrett, Sue and Jim Corenman, Bobbi Tosse, and Mary Lovely, wife of current Commodore Jim Quanci) founded PCYC to ensure the future of the race and began its long partnership with Kaneohe Yacht Club as the host finish club. Lou’s faithful support of PCYC included service

as its Commodore in 2008.

Lou bought his first boat, a Cal 2-27 in the mid-1970s and stepped up to Ghost, a Morgan 38-2, in 1981.

After racing Ghost in the 1986 and 1988 Pac Cups from his home port in California, Lou and Ghost stayed in Hawaii after the 1990 race. They went on to win their division in 1992 and 2004 (with a close second overall in 1992), in both years with an allKaneohe-Yacht-Club crew.

Lou served in many capacities at Kaneohe Yacht Club, including as its 2011 Commodore, its Regatta Chair, Kim & Lou Ickler, Pacific Cup 2004 and on its Board of Directors and Photo: Rob Moore Finance and Planning Committee.

Lou grew up in the Dakotas, graduated from Yale University with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and served in the US Navy, helping to launch nuclear submarines. He earned an MBA from the University of Chicago, and enjoyed a successful career as a securities analyst, focusing on Silicon Valley during its infancy.

No remembrance of Lou would be complete without recognizing his partner and wife, Kim Ickler. Kim supported Lou in all of his endeavors, including as crew and watch captain on Ghost, and as his right hand in his responsibilities as commodore and board and committee member. She continues to be an active PCYC volunteer and KYC officer.

Any donations in Lou’s memory can be made to the Hawaii Sailing Foundation or the Kaneohe Yachting Foundation.
