We are very proud of the tradition the Pacific Cup has become, and the fun and challenges it has provided for so many sailors over the last 38 years.

The Pacific Cup Yacht Club is responsible for organizing the biennial Pacific Cup, dubbed the “FUN race to Hawaii.” Since 1980, the Pacific Cup has been sailed from San Francisco Bay to Hawaii every other year, and since 1988 the finish has been at the warm and welcoming Kaneohe Yacht Club on the island of Oahu. With an emphasis on pre-race preparation for the 2,070-mile race, PCYC’s volunteer membership has helped to ensure that thousands of racers have been delighted with their Pacific Cup experience.

We are also proud of our continuing partnerships with the Richmond Yacht Club in California and the Kaneohe Yacht Club in Hawaii. Their hospitality and aloha spirit are key to the race, and KYC provides one of the most beautiful finish venues in the world.

This year’s fleet includes a new, almost one-design, division of Express 27s, an increased group of double-handed entries, the usual fully-crewed PHRF and ORR divisions, and a full complement of cruisers (many of whom are participating for the first time). We continue to strive to include sailors and boats of all stripes.

As usual, our board and numerous volunteers in California and Hawaii have worked hard to make this year’s event happen.

Most of them are listed on the volunteer page in this guide. If you see any of them on the docks or at our social events, please thank them for all they do.

We owe special thanks this year to Mark English for producing the five programs in this race cycle’s Pacific Offshore Academy and to Alaska Airlines for sponsoring those programs. They were the best yet and had the highest attendance.

We continue to rely heavily on our sponsors. Their generous contributions enable us to increase our marketing and outreach to potential entrants, expand and improve the coverage of the race, and improve our parties.

Like 2016, this year’s race will continue to have 24/7 at-sea medical consultation services provided by GW Medical Associates, at no additional cost to our racers. We are very grateful for their services; they can be and sometimes are true life-savers.

Pacific Cup 2018 will also continue the event’s long history of environmental awareness and stewardship. We are promoting “green” options for single use plastics and participating in citizen science. Entrants are offered the option to collect data for the EPA on marine debris and micro plastics both during the race and the return from Hawaii to the west coast.

Frederic Berg Commodore Kaneohe Yacht Club Ahhhh, warm balmy breezes, tropical drinks, leis and sunshine… as if that wasn’t welcoming enough, the Members of Kaneohe Yacht Club extend a heartfelt Aloha to the 2018 Pacific Cup participants, their families and friends and those spending countless hours organizing the Fun Race to Kaneohe Bay. We open our Club to everyone involved in the Pacific Cup and hope we can offer a place to decompress, meet up with fellow participants and spin great tales of an ocean gone mad.

As yachts arrive, Finish Line Escorts guide racers through the Kaneohe Bay channels to the safety of the Club. Once a yacht has cleared Inspections, the Leis and Trays folks welcome participants with gorgeous Hawaiian Lei and Mai Tai. This is where the magical tropical spell begins and we hope it never wears off.

The Entertainment Committee has organized a week of fun filled festivities for all to enjoy, culminating with the Awards Ceremony, not to be missed. In addition the Club has tennis courts, a swimming pool and plenty of lawn to lounge around on. The Galley is available to keep stomachs brimming and favorite libations await you at the Kaneohe Yacht Club bar.

While here enjoying the Bay in all its splendor, think about taking some time to hang out at the sandbar, go to Kailua or Lanikai beaches, spend some time in Kailua’s many new shops and dining options or take a spin around the island. The volunteers at the Information Desk are ready to dazzle you with many more organized options such as surfing, fishing, kayaking, hiking, tours, snorkeling or scuba diving, just to name a few. On Thursday night you can join the Kaneohe Yacht Club Bulkhead races, where the real competition begins, just remember to bring a six pack when looking for a boat to race on. The Kauai Channel Race starts on Friday, August 3 at 7:00 am, if you are looking to start the journey home from the traditional Kauai departure, or just to enjoy the bounty Kauai has to offer, including the spectacular Hanalei Bay. The Flag Officers, Board of Directors and Members of Kaneohe Yacht Club wish all participants a wild and crazy, but safe ride across the Pacific.

Setting the Foundation In-water safety at sea training

T

he Hawaiian Islands have lured sailors from the West Coast for generations. The passage across the Pacific Ocean offers some of the best sailing found the world over and the destination is one of the most beautiful places in the world. If it were just as easy as sailing across San Francisco Bay, more people would do it but the fact remains that the crossing can be both exhilarating and very challenging. Without the proper planning, safety training, boat preparation, and knowledge of boat systems, a great deal can go wrong.

And, although planning for the Pacific Cup may be a complicated but very manageable exercise for bigbudget programs with multiple passages under their belts, it can be a daunting undertaking for newcomers.

Ensuring that all participants — be they smaller boats (24 foot +), double-handers, families, and cruisers (a division started in 2014) — have access to the PCYC’s extensive collection of resources is what sets the Pac Cup apart from other events. This support network makes planning and preparation for the race significantly more manageable, especially for 2018’s 43 first-time registrants.

Seminars & Certifications A key component of PCYC’s support strategy is the series of Pacific Offshore Academy seminars which feature respected experts from the sailing community. This series of seminars (five for the 2018 edition) pulls together the collective wisdom of race veterans and subject matter experts that cover a broad range of topics ranging from boat preparation to weather forecasting and tactics to medical emergencies. In 2017-2018, the seminars were scheduled as four-hour, half-day courses with breakout sessions to make it easy for sailors to ask specific questions in a small group environment.

To help ensure that sailors could meet the race requirements for Safety at Sea training, PCYC sponsored a US Sailing sanctioned Advanced Safety at Sea (hands-on) seminar well ahead of the 2018 race at the Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda. Covering US Sailing’s required topics, the seminar also featured Pac Cup veterans who provided tips based on their personal experiences.

When it comes to responding to emergencies at sea, there’s no substitute for on-the-water practice. The race rules require that the skipper certify that he/she and at least two-thirds of the crew have conducted a man overboard recovery drill. Additionally, they must certify that they have demonstrated the ability of their chosen emergency steering method to steer the boat both upwind and downwind under sail.

Inspections Boats racing in the 2018 Pacific Cup vary widely, from Moore 24s to 75+ foot maxis. Some have a bucket for a toilet while others have hot water showers. Whatever their amenities (or lack thereof ) every boat racing in the Pac Cup must undergo a series of rigorous inspections to make sure their vessel is seaworthy, with suitable safety gear and provisions to protect crew, in case of unforeseen circumstances.

The 2018 Pacific Cup requires compliance with the Pacific Cup Equipment Rules (PCERs) which incorporates by reference the US Sailing Special Equipment Rules. The PCERs amend them by adding, removing or changing some of the requirements and establishing uniform minimum equipment and training standards for all boats, whether racing or cruising.

To help skippers ensure they’re complying with fine points of the safety requirements, PCYC pairs each race boat with an Inspector who will go through the boat and

S

afety is the paramount concern for all racers – a boat won’t be fast if a crew member is injured. The Pacific Cup organization strongly supports the preparation process by continually adding new seminars and services to help make the entrant’s ocean crossing as safe and enjoyable as possible.

confirm that the required equipment, certifications, and plans for energy use, communications and fire response are met. Our team of Inspectors also act as coaches when needed, helping ensure that each and every boat is ready for the 2,000+ nm journey across the Pacific.

Provisioning “What do you eat during the race?” Perhaps the most common question posed to racers by non-sailors, race menus vary by boat galley set up, crew size, budget and crew appetite. For some, food preparation involves adding water to a freeze-dried packet. On other boats, meals are cause for celebration along with competitive bragging rights back at the bar. What is the same among all boats, however, is the minimum amount of water that must be aboard. All boats are required to have eleven gallons of water per crew member at the start. Of that, one gallon per crew member is emergency water that must be shown to the Inspector at the finish, unopened. Boats must also provision a reserve of seven extra days of food in the event of a prolonged delay due to weather conditions or vessel failure. Pac Cup half-way parties are legendary, and often feature a special meal, costumes and other festivities to celebrate reaching the race’s half-way point.

Days of fantastic downwind sailing, phenomenal sunrises and sunsets, the first sight of Oahu in the distance and of course the spectacular finish at the ever-welcoming Kaneohe Yacht Club make this race a lifechanging experience.

For the 2018 crossing and return, the Alaska Airlines Pacific Offshore Academy included an all-day medical seminar covering preparation for, prevention of, and response to common medical situations at sea. The presentations included: • Personal Welfare and First Aid - Mary Lovely (RN/PhD, veteran Pacific Cup racer since 1986) • Medical Issues – John Taussig (17 year paramedic, USCG captain, and Executive Director for Backcountry Medical Guides) • Medical Outfitting & Offshore Consultation – Dr. Neal Sikka (Senior provider of telemedicine services for GW Maritime Medical Access, Associate Professor at GW University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Practicing Board Certified Emergency Physician with over 15 years of experience) • Case Study: Riva 2016 – Jeff Duval (5 Time Pacific Cup participant, Various medical courses/SAS seminar training, Onboard Medical Officer for Riva during the 2016 Race, which required Coast Guard intervention to deliver needed medical supplies 1200 miles out from Kaneohe.

Maritime Medical Access For 2018, the Pacific Cup Yacht Club has again partnered with The GW Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) to provide Maritime Medical Access (MMA) services to sailors during the race and the return delivery. The service provides race participants with remote 24/7 access to board certified emergency medicine physicians for assistance in managing any medical emergencies that may occur while at sea on the way to Hawaii or on the return sail to the mainland. This service is being provided by PCYC at no additional cost to the entrants.

If a medical emergency arises, Pacific Cup sailors will be connected with a specially-trained GW Emergency Medicine Physician within minutes of calling MMA. The physician will guide the sailor through appropriate assessments and provide treatment recommendations. MMA staff and physicians will coordinate care for the duration of the transit or until symptoms resolve.

pacific cup village n the days leading up to the Pac Cup start, boats coming from out-of-town ports are invited to dock at Richmond Yacht Club for last minute inspections, preparation and provisioning. PCYC volunteers offer concierge services such as recommendations for repairs, restaurants and shopping. During the week leading up to the race starts, Pac Cup village hosts seminars for 2018 skippers and crew, as well as ones for sailors interested in doing the race in the future.

Pre-race parties give Pac Cup racers an opportunity to meet their fellow sailors, while also providing friends and family with an opportunity to participate in the non-sailing aspects of the race. The race the 2018 fleet F

rom full-on race machines to family cruisers, classic 40-something footers to disturbingly compact doublehanded boats, the Pacific Cup seems to welcome almost everyone. And it seems almost everyone is coming this year, representing a wide variety length, design, crew size, expertise and home ports.

Big Boats to Watch

We have an exciting lineup in the 65’+ range. This big boat division, scheduled to start Friday, July 13, will feature some speedy sleds.

Four 70-footers include the Santa Cruz 70, Westerly, two Andrews 70s, Runaway and Pyewacket, and a custom Wylie 70, Rage.

Breaking the record to Kaneohe in 1994, Rage made the crossing in 8 days, 7 hours, 13 minutes. Since that time, she’s broken numerous West Coast records. Recently acquired by David Raney from her original owners, Rage returns to the Pacific Cup for the first time since 2008. Finishing out the spectrum is the Mills 68, Prospector.

Double Handers

Double-handing the Pacific Cup has its own special set of challenges. Yet there are always folks willing to have at it. This year there are 13 teams participating in the division. The larger boats may keep sailors drier, but they can certainly be a handful. The wellprepared J/120 Jamani should keep Drs. Sean and Kim Mulvihill busy trimming the big kites (Report from their Inspector: with two MDs on board, they probably don’t need the mandatory medical handbook, but we make them take it anyway!). Abstract is a J/105 hailing from Portland, OR., and there’s also Bill and PCYC ViceCommodore Melinda Erkelens’ Wolfpack to make note of. On the smaller side, there are eight 27-foot-and-under entrants, including Express 27s, an Antrim 27, and a Moore 24. Pac Cup has long welcomed the doublehanders who can look forward to a warm greeting (and a shower) at Kaneohe.

Local Designs

Northern California yacht designers are always represented in the Pac Cup. This year 9 boats will be vying for the trophy honoring Carl Schumacher, including two Express 37s and seven Express 27s. Also represented are designers Jim Antrim and Tom Wylie. Rounding out the locally designed boats are the Bill Lee Santa Cruz yachts competing this year for the Bill Lee Wizard Perpetual Trophy.

In a class by itself

We’re thrilled that Charles Devanneaux will be bringing the Beneteau Figaro 3 À Fond le Girafon (the first production foiling one-design monohull ever to be designed) to the 2018 race.

Trouble is, ORR does not yet know how to rate this boat, with its curved foils. Exactly how PCYC will class and score this boat will likely be decided shortly before race time.

Home Ports

The race may link San Francisco Bay to Hawaii, but many boats are delivered to the start from origins up and down the West Coast, Hawaii, and even Australia. This year’s traveling boats include 15 boats from British Columbia, Seattle and Portland. Six hail from Southern California, one from Milwaukee, one from Chicago, and another from Newport, RI. Each year a special trophy is awarded to the best corrected performance by a Hawaii-based boat. This year there is only one vying for the trophy, KYC Commodore Frederic Berg and Mike Bacon’s Bacon Berger (Kaneohe YC).

Veterans and Rookies

While some Pacific races attract boats with primarily professional crew, the Pac Cup is proud to provide many sailors with their first ocean crossing opportunity. A remarkable 43 entrants are making the FUN race to Hawaii their first trans-Pacific race.

Of the veterans, many are not just on their second or third Pac Cup but are into double digits. Pac Cup addict Jim Quanci is on his 16th Pac Cup, racing his tried and true Cal 40 Green Buffalo. Dean Treadway’s Custom Farr 36, Sweet Okole, has been racing the Pac Cup since its inception in 1980. “It is always fabulous coming into Kaneohe,” said Dean, “It feels like Sweet Okole is coming home. That is where she was when I bought her.”

The Cruising Division

The Cruising Division was introduced in the 2014 race, providing folks who wanted to sail to Hawaii with the level of support provided by PCYC and the opportunity to do so without the extra challenges of racing. This year’s eleven cruising boats must meet the same safety and equipment requirements as the racing boats but are allowed to use their engines if the wind gets light. We look forward to their stories – not only of the fantastic sailing, sunrises and sunsets, but also of their fabulous meals, wine lists, fresh water showers, and number of fish caught.

Melting Pot

Ultra-sled, dinky doublehander, racer, or cruiser, we’re all sailors together when we set that first wobbly foot on the dock after 2100 miles. It’s the sea legs, not the mai tais, right? Stories shared, advice freely dispensed and often accepted, experiences compared, and the warm camaraderie of a shared adventure. No matter what we did it in, we did it.

ew aspects of ocean sailing have changed as much over the decades as the options for onboard communication. The tradition of daily radio safety check-ins with race organizers has been a part of the Pac Cup since the very first race in 1980. With satellite phones and single-side band radios, racers today can communicate with friends and loved ones – as long as they don’t receive any outside assistance that might give navigators an advantage in the race.

How many times can you watch your bow pulpit disappear in a wave when you reach the bottom of that hole in the water before crying “Uncle!”? Most entrants found out in the mid- to later- half of the race as even their strongest kites started blowing up from this wave induced repetitive shock loading. And then there were those snooker waves coming from the tropicals to the south. A few times per day you would be hit broadside by one of those tropical created waves from the south – born off Green Buffalo at the start of the Pacific Cup 2014 Mexico - that if it hit you in the stern meant an “auto broach” and if it hit you in the bow meant an “auto round down”. And these waves were big heavy irresistible forces that any rudder or helmsman is ill equipped to counter.

The finish Greetings For some boats, the arrival at Kaneohe Bay is filled with bright sunshine and spectacular views of tropical Hawaiian paradise. For others, it’s lit with stars and moonlight. But whatever the time – day or night – each boat is greeted by volunteers. Escort boats help guide each boat from the finish line, through the reef channel to the Kaneohe Yacht Club dock, where each and every crew member is handed a Mai Tai, a lei and a warm “aloha”. And that’s only the start of the celebration.

Kaneohe Bay isn’t that far geographically from Honolulu’s Waikiki Beach, but it’s a totally different environment from the bustling urban jungle. Kaneohe is green and tropical and very relaxing.

Kaneohe Yacht Club volunteers are on hand to answer questions about local activities and a swimming pool is on hand for a refreshing swim.

T

he Pacific Cup Yacht Club provides outstanding, unique awards. In addition to the perpetual trophies described below, Monkeypod bowls are awarded for achievement in some categories and accompany the perpetuals trophies as a “keeper”. Stately and iconic, the Monkeypod is one of the most cherished trees of Hawaii—enhancing landscapes and streets, providing shade from the tropical heat, and serving as a keen reminder of the islands’ dramatic natural history. Oahu has the largest of the islands’ Monkeypods, sprawling over nearly an acre.

This tree is known in the rest of the tropical world as the Rain Tree (Samanea saman).

The bowls are turned by Robert Butts, one of Hawaii’s premier woodcrafters and can be found on the web at www.rwbutts. com. Although today, most Monkeypod bowls and platters sold at retail in Hawaii come from the Philippines, our Pacific Cup bowls this year have a very special local connection, as described by our woodcrafter, Bob Butts: “The Monkeypod has some history with it.

The trees were taken down a few years ago for the expansion of the Ala Moana Shopping Center, they were located on Ala Moana Boulevard and Piikoi Streets, and were going to be used as flooring in the new additions. The contractors hired a company to cut cants out of the logs but had problems so Indonesia did not make the flooring and Oahu tree recycling got the logs. I got the cut offs.”

As an aside, koa, the native wood used for the last two races, is no longer commercially available.

The PHRF Trophy is awarded to the boat competing in any of the PHRF divisions with the best corrected time of all boats in those divisions. The trophy is a Weems & Plath barometer.

The First Hawaiian Boat to Finish is awarded to the first corrected time boat skippered by a full-time resident of Hawaii whose boat is registered and maintained in Hawaii and sailed under the burgee of a Hawaiian yacht club. This is a three-foot-high carved Koa statue of King Kamehameha.

The Bjorn Johnson ORR Trophy is awarded to the boat competing in any of the ORR divisions with the best corrected time of all boats in those divisions. The trophy is a Weems & Plath barometer.

The George R. Barrett Memorial Trophy is awarded by the PCYC Commodore to the individual who exhibits outstanding seamanship as well as distinguished service, dedication, and enthusiasm for the race. George is remembered for his leadership in organizing the Pacific Cup Yacht Club, finding sponsorship for the race, and establishing Kaneohe Yacht Club as the finish destination.

The Passage Yachts Nautical Trophy is awarded to the Beneteau boat with the fastest 24-hour passage on elapsed time. The trophy is a Robert Butts Monkeypod Bowl. Both racing and cruising division boats are eligible.

The Best Prepared Yacht Trophy is awarded to the yacht identified by the Chief Inspector with input from all inspectors that best demonstrates a thorough, thoughtful, and seamanlike preparation for the race, including implementation of the Equipment Requirements. The trophy is a Robert Butts Monkeypod Bowl.

The Best Family Yacht Trophy is awarded to the best performing yacht crewed by family members. The trophy is a Robert Butts Monkeypod Bowl. To be eligible, boats must sign up on the Pacific Cup website on or before the Skippers’ Meeting.

Other prizes may be awarded for notable performance in one of a variety of special categories, some just for fun and some for serious accomplishments during the race. These prizes are announced at the Awards Ceremony.

n January 1979, Hal Nelson approached Ballena Bay Yacht Club (BBYC) Commodore Vytas Pazemenas with the idea of starting a low-key, fun race for fully crewed boats from San Francisco to Hawaii. Nelson, who was instrumental in bringing PHRF racing to San Francisco Bay, saw that the first single-handed race to Hawaii had just been successfully completed the previous summer, and the Alameda-based BBYC had a nucleus of members interested in ocean racing. The timing appeared to be right. BBYC worked with a small but enthusiastic group of volunteers from Kauai’s Nawiliwili Yacht Club to put a race together, setting a finish line on the southeast corner of Kauai. That race became the Pacific Cup. Over the next few years interest in the race increased rapidly and by the end of the 1986, the Pacific Cup was well established with both serious racers and more casual racing cruisers. However, BBYC

was finding it difficult to administer what was turning into a major event, especially at a club with a number of competing activities. In Hawaii, the 1986 race had taxed the facilities of the Nawiliwili Harbor, prompting talk of moving the finish elsewhere in Hawaii.

It began to look as if the race might fade away unless someone could organize a committed group to keep it going. On August 4, 1987, George R. Barrett assembled a number of sailors, at St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. With the support of some leading participants from prior races and the BBYC organizers, Barrett drafted the Articles of Incorporation for a new club. The Pacific Cup Yacht Club, whose function would be to take over the organization of the race, was born.

One of the first items of business was the choice of a new finish line. Talks with Kaneohe Yacht Club, one of the three principal clubs on Oahu that had handled the finish of the Transpac race from Los Angeles, led to the important and happy choice of Kaneohe. Barrett had sailed the race as the chartering skipper of Charley, a Holland 67, winning third place in 1986. In 1988, he ran the race from the shore, and he ran it well. George died in the fall of 1988, but the Pacific Cup continues as a living memorial to him.

Over the years, the Pac Cup has evolved with new divisions, new sponsors and new trophies. What has remained the same is a commitment to safe and enjoyable racing by hundreds of skippers and crew and the participation of an army of volunteers in both California and Hawaii.

Race Highlights 1980 – Race number one. Racing began with one of the roughest crossings in Pac Cup history. Forty yachts started the first Pac Cup on June 15, 1980; only 32 of the boats finished. The three Santana 35s in the race all had damage to their rudders during the first several days. Friendship was picked up by a Navy ship and Raccoon Straights returned to San Francisco with water pouring in a cracked rudder bearing, leaving Wild Hair the only Santana to finish in Hawaii. The 63-foot yawl Corsair retired from the race and was lost on a shoal on her way back. After the rough weather of the first few days, the winds diminished and only Merlin, the 67-foot Bill Lee ULDB, had the speed to outrun the high-pressure area that moved down on the rest of the fleet. She reached Nawiliwili more than four days ahead of the rest of the fleet to win first to finish as well as first on corrected time.

1982 - Competition intensified among the big boats, although the number of boats racing under the International Ocean Racing (IOR) rule had declined to eight boats from 13 in 1980. Merlin was there again, beating her previous record by 1 hour and 28 minutes in elapsed time to win the San Francisco to Kauai award, but was only able to place sixth on corrected time.

1984 - Merlin again beat her old record and set a new San Francisco to Kauai fastest passage record in elapsed time, 9 days, 7 hours and 49 minutes, once again earning the top trophy. The winners on corrected time were the Freres 36, Surefire, in the IOR division and the Smith 42, Magic Carpet, in PHRF. In the newly added doublehanded division, the Express 27, Light’n Up, won, arriving only six hours behind Magic Carpet.

1986 - Merlin set yet another new elapsed time record of 8 days, 14 hours, 53 minutes. On corrected time the Farr 36, Sweet Okole, skippered by Bobbi Tosse, took the last San Francisco to Kaui trophy.

1988 – Light winds. On corrected time, the winner of the inaugural Pacific Cup trophy to Kaneohe Bay was Saraband, a Westsail 32 that had sailed a consistent pace for 14 days, 17 hours elapsed time, an amazing feat. Kathmandu, Phillipe Kahn’s Santa Cruz 70, took first in IOR after her competition got caught too far north and suffered from light winds.

1990 – A race of firsts. After light wind for the first few days, race conditions were generally nice. There were a number of firsts, including the initiation of staggered starts over a four-day period and a record number of entries that peaked at 53 with 45 actually crossing the starting line. The first three boats overall represented

a complete range of sailboat types with first being the Lee ULDB, Oaxaca (Santa Cruz 50), the second a medium displacement racer-cruiser, Heart of Gold (Schumacher 50), and the third a heavy displacement cruiser Saraband (Westsail 32). Oaxaca took the Pacific Cup with the best corrected time.

1992 – A rhumb line race. The first start was windy and the next starts were very slow, but overall, the race was relatively fast with 46 boats starting and 43 finishing. It proved to be a rhumb line race because the Pacific High was quite far north. Some boats successfully chose a great circle route. The two largest boats in the race were double handed – Mongoose (SC 70) and Peregrine (N/M 70). The smallest boat in the fleet, Team Bonzi, a Moore 24, swept the top awards, taking both the double-handed and the Pacific Cup trophies. Fleet second place went to Ghost, the Morgan 38 from Kaneohe.

1994 – Records fall. An all-time high of 58 boats started, with 52 finishing. Steve Rander’s Wylie 70, Rage, broke Merlin’s longstanding elapsed time record by finishing in 8 days, 7 hours and 13 minutes. The small boats dominated the corrected time standings, with Bill and Melinda Erkelen’s home-built Dogpatch 26, Moonshine, winning Division B, the Double Handed class, and the overall Pacific Cup. 1996 – More records. With starting conditions a repeat of 1992, the first starters blasted away from the coast, while the next three divisions were wondering if they would ever make it past the In 2016, Rio 100 set a course record at 5 days 02:41:13

Farallones. Conditions were right for Rage, which broke her own 1994 record with a new record of 7 days 22 hours. Not only did the speed record fall, but a record 60 boats made it to Kaneohe. Among them was the Cal 40 Illusion, a tried-and-true California-to-Hawaii veteran, sailed by Stan Honey and Sally Lindsay, sweeping the double handed fleet and winning the overall Pacific Cup. 1998 – Yet another record. The Pac Cup speed record was demolished by Roy Disney’s Santa Cruz 70 turbo, Pyewacket, as she took more than a full day off the record, finishing in 6 days, 14 hours, and 23 minutes. Pacific Cup veteran Bob Nance won first overall on handicap in the Newport 30, Water Pik. 2000 – GO SLOW was the theme. The 2000 race was so slow that several boats floated around the Farallon Islands for three days in the early part of the race and 27 of the 80 boats entered did not finish within the time limit. The overall winner was Octavia, a Santa Cruz 50, with a remarkable elapsed time of 10 days, 12 ½ hours. The fastest passage was claimed by Phillipe Kahn’s Andrews 70 Pegasus.

2002 – Experience is rewarded. Normal weather returned, with most boats finishing within a few days of each other. Skip Allan on the Wylie Custom 27, Wildflower, proved that experience (over 25 ocean passages) does count. Wildflower won not only the doublehanded division but also came in first overall to take home the Pacific Cup. 2004 – Fastest passage record demolished. The day before the first start, the weather service issued gale warnings for the area of the Farallones, which proved overly pessimistic. The race was marked by uneventful weather after that, with the high filling in

33 history after the first two days, making it a slow race. The overall winner was the Santa Cruz 52, Winnetou, and eighteen years after her first Pacific Cup race, the Morgan 38, Ghost, won Division A. The Pacific Cup’s first female duo Silvia Seaberg and Synthia Petroka won the double-handed division on Eyrie, a Hawkfarm 28, with an elapsed time of 14 days and 4 hours. Mari Cha IV, a custom 147 footer, set a new elapsed record of 5 days, 5 hours, 38 minutes, 10 seconds.

2006 – Another slow race. The position of the high, and the direction it was moving, made it a guessing game. Most boats tried a course close to the rhumb line, but after the first few days changed their minds and tried to go south. It took 9 to 12 days for most of the boats to finish, and after 15 days there were still 9 boats that had not finished. The Santa Cruz 52, Lightning, took home both the best elapsed time trophy and the Pacific Cup, and Jim Gregory’s Schumacher 52, Morpheus, was awarded the inaugural Schumacher trophy.

2008 - A full fleet – from start to finish. Nearly 70 entries, with every monohull that entered starting, and every boat that started, finishing. Philippe Kahn’s Open 50, Pegasus, set a new doublehanded record of just over seven days, fifteen hours. Once again the Pacific Cup went to double handers, Joby Easton and Bill Huseby on the Cascade 36, Rain Drop.

2010 – A Northerly course. As a testament to the impact of weather information and routing software available to sailors, virtually all racers adopted their northerly courses early in the race. Back on shore, race officials were startled to see, day after day, that the courses taken were all north of the rhumb line. The final group of starters, the fastest boats in Division E, took the northerly plan to an extreme, in some cases sailing slightly away from Hawaii as they positioned themselves north for their drive to the finish line 2,070 miles away. Limit, a R/P 63 was the fastest boat on elapsed time, and Horizon, a Santa Cruz 50 was not only first to finish, but also took home the Pacific Cup.

PHRF, Moore 24 Record, and Team Trophy for Richmond Yacht Club. New records were set by the Santa Cruz 50 Hula Girl and by Manouch Moshayedi’s Rio 100 for the course, with a stunning time of 5 days 02:41:13. Though the arrivals came fast and furious at the docks, KYC rallied to put on a warm welcome for all. And already… in the longhouse… sailors were planning their next crossing.

2012 – Mid-July start. The July 16 start date was the latest ever, designed to avoid the light and uncertain winds that are often found earlier in the summer. Pac Cuppers in the early part of the week ventured out into a near desert of wind and a generally benign crossing. Kevin P. Welch in ICON finished in 7 days 16 hours 33 minutes and took the Fastest Passage trophy. Swazik, a Swan 45, took home the Pacific Cup for her eight-day, 22-hour crossing.

2014 – A mixed bag. It was a race slow to start and wild to finish.

As in 2012, the early days of the race tested skill and patience as tacticians, weather-guessers, and sail handlers worked to eke every bit of speed out of the light and variable winds. Daily runs in the of range of 30 miles vexed the ordinarily swift boats. Several days after the starts, the band of light air relented, allowing a few, then more boats through to more reliable breezes and a race “the way it is supposed to be.” Unlike 2012, the fleets split widely with some betting on a far north course, and others on the south – the North won. But easy sailing was not to last. Surprisingly boisterous weather greeted the early finishers, with heavy winds and lumpy seas.

2016 –This was the heaviest year many participants can recall with records set and broken (along with sails set and broken) in many divisions. For many boats, the traditional mid-race easy downwind run was replaced with a scramble to maintain control while getting maximum speed out of the strong winds. Mas! on the way to Hawaii. Doublehanded Division. Pacific Cup 2016

Mighty Mas! and the Pineapple Express

By Mark English and Ian Rogers Sailing rock stars Mark English and Ian Rogers doublehanded their Moore 24 Mas! in the 2016 Pacific Cup. Their elapsed time of 10 days 14:30 gave them honors in the overall Pacific Cup, division honors in the Kolea Doublehanded Division 1, and first overall in the PHRF group. They also broke the previous Moore 24 Pac Cup record of 11 days 09:28:25 that stood for 18 years.

E

arly in Summer 2016, Ian started running “what if we started the Pac Cup today?” scenarios through Expedition, and at one point, based on the standard Moore 24 Polars and the two-week forecast weather, Expedition proudly produced a nine-day run from San Francisco to Kaneohe. Because our start was still 30+ days away, I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the forecast, but it did prompt me to think about what sort of condition we and Mas! might be in when reaching Hawaii if we actually found ourselves in a weather pattern which could produce a 9 to 10 day run to Hawaii on a Moore 24. After a quick shudder, my answer was the boat would probably have scorch marks along the hull, smoke trailing out of her transom and we would need surgery to close up our adrenal glands. Check, check and check.

The Mas! race to Hawaii started in earnest in the fall of 2014. Our first order of business was to redo a deck that had had so many holes drilled in it that it looked like someone had stood over it with a Tommy gun and emptied an entire clip into it. That project quickly evolved into an open transom modification and a complete redo of the deck layout and rigging system. By the time the dust cleared, Mas! sported four winches, an exterior floating lead system, an open transom, internal companionway hatch, glassed-in toe rails, and a hundred other small tweaks. Mas!’s home away from home was initially Gilles Combrisson’s shop at the Sugar Dock, and later Scott Easom's shop at Brickyard Cove. Both provided advice, tools, beer, coffee and encouragement to keep at it at 3 a.m. when the temptation to bag it became too much. Both also stepped up at critical points with big help to keep us on schedule and had a “whatever it takes” approach which directly contributed to our race — they can't be thanked or credited enough.

Mas! was the first boat in the 2016 Pac Cup fleet to pass its safety inspection - all that hard prep work paid off. When Dick Horn measured the boat including our offshore setup (life lines, batteries, solar, instruments, outboard, etc.), she weighed in at 2,087 pounds fully loaded. Our plan was to surf early and longer than anyone

I had seen first-hand the aftermath of guys who sailed Kangaroo Court to Hawaii in 1996 in 11 days 16 hours (John Siegel was exactly right - straight to the hospital to be unplugged), so as the weather started to firm up for 2016 we figured if we played the cards right and the hurricanes forming off the Mexican coast cooperated, we would have a fast trip.

Day Two also brought the realization that we were using more amps than we expected even when accounting for the overcast sky. After scratching our heads and poking around for a bit we realized that one of the two solar panels was not producing power, the result of the regulator shorting out due to a lack of waterproofing. That it had survived a Coastal Cup earlier in the summer and 24 hours at sea was a bit remarkable as we had been taking waves over the boat on a regular basis. We shut down one of three instrument displays and proceeded. No more charging of anything that wasn't the Iridium Sat Phone or the laptop. We used iPhones and iPad only for navigation and quick texts to the shore team to let them know we were having fun and all was good.

Back on the race course, Day Five also saw us reduce instruments to sailing by masthead wand and compass during the day, and one instrument at night, all to save what little power we had.

The number we had in mind was that at minus 60 net amps the batteries would fail to produce the 13.3 volts required to power our systems. By Day Six we were at minus 33 amps; we should have enough, but were not sure. It seemed daunting at first, but Skip Allen had sailed Wildflower without a speedo (his magic marker speedo on the cockpit bulkhead was permanently pegged at 12 kts). All the years of one design sailing without any instruments had prepared us well for this necessity - think DW in the Gorge frantically looking aloft to make sure you are not by the lee. Next to Skip we were total wimps, so no complaining!

It means that no matter what may happen always give it all you got, pedal to the metal…

five or six round-ups between 2 and 3 a.m. So we dug out the #3 jib and ran with a poled out jib until 7:45 a.m. The A2.5 went back up, another wipeout, and back to the #3 poled out. We were dealing with a super windy day! We re-set the A5 at some point and switched to 2-hour watches which mostly worked, but we both ended up very very tired. Mark raised the possibility of re-setting the #3 to give ourselves a break. Ian reminded Mark that he is a Moore 24 sailor, so Mark relented and decided to press on.

Our notes don't specify, but the recollection is at that this point we'd taken to trying to guess our 24-hour run distance each morning after reporting our position, and our guesses were shockingly off. Because of all the wipeouts and sail changes, plus general overtired-driven pessimism (plus Wolfpack and Alchemist had posted 250-280-mile days at that point and it felt like we were about to get overtaken by the peloton), our guess on July 18-19 was 200 or 205 miles. Nope! 240 miles! Holy . . . s--t! Kung fu fighting!

From July 19 through the finish we were deep running and doing something else we did not expect to do: we set the symmetrical kites. We brought them along mostly because we needed backups and didn't have anything else, but they proved to be more effective and faster than the A sails when deep running (which was the order of the day at that point). We bounced back and forth between the class kite and the S3 (shy kite) based on wind strength.

WE HAD OUR MOJO BACK! We were starting to pay closer attention to the overall standings. Our food still sucked, there was still a lot of cloud cover, and we netted a minus 42 amps on July 19. However, the miles to go are ticking down. Ian's trick to stay awake during the night was to slap himself. Mine was to pinch the back of my legs, drink too much water, then spend 20 minutes wiggling out of my foulies to take a leak then 20 more minutes wiggling back in ahead of the approaching squall. We also discovered cacao bites.

They seemed great, and are totally loaded with caffeine. The RX is three bites to keep you up for six hours. (We had to back off on the cacao bites to sleep off-watch . . . oops.)

Mas! is an amazing boat. In addition to the wind, we were dealing with huge Pacific rollers which felt sometimes like they might be 50 feet crest to trough. Sailing during the day might actually seem tougher because we could see what was happening and started questioning whether we wanted to surf down the front of one of those things. About half the time we sculled the tiller to slow down or headed up to drop off the wave. The other half the wind built as Mas! was presented at the top of the wave and went over the face and down. Usually it was not as bad as expected. A couple of times it really was as bad, but the Moore is such a steady boat that even skipping down the wave sideways (generally pointed in the right direction but definitely not on her feet or with much steerage) it all held together. There were also waves coming in from the south driven by the hurricanes/tropical storms coming up from Mexico.

These were wipeout waves, because they hit at the worst time (middle of a squall blowing 27 knots, eating dinner, sailing by the lee for a bit while applying sunscreen). Through all this, Mas! was flying 10-14 knots, crushing the waves in front of her, popping out the backside, wiping the water off her face, and raising her finger for another.

On July 21 we were 100 miles out and did our check-in. Still absolutely sending it, we decided to go with the S3 to minimize risk as we knew we had a good cushion over Wolfpack to finish first overall. Unfortunately, we were dead upwind of the finish and

history apparently getting lifted on each gybe, which explained why it took Wolfpack and Varuna so long to finish their last 100 miles. We ditched the watch system and hung out for long stretches in the cockpit, still a lot of action but knowing we'd be in that night.

At that point, things slowed down a bit. Our “Final Gybe” to port was at sunset and we were laying the finish. Lots of helicopters buzzing around (not Sports Illustrated filming us as it turns out) and as we approached Kaneohe the air base was lit up with planes taking off and landing; it was loud and cool. Tom Cruise flashed us a thumbs-up. We stayed low of the finish so we could heat it up when the breeze dropped as we got in close. The wind didn't drop and we had the pole on the headstay for the last five miles, contributing to a handful of minor round-ups. Sigh, nothing can be easy.

We also knew we'd beaten the record for fastest Moore 24 passage in the Pac Cup by 18 hours. That was possibly the best accomplishment of all because we knew what those guys had to do to get that record, and we'd done it. Despite at least fifteen offers from the escort vessel to pull up and let us take our sails down for an orderly motor into KYC (barbarbarmaitaimaitai), we sailed into our parking spot at the Bulkhead. We had our Hawaiian shirts vacuum sealed in the bow, so we got ourselves as presentable as possible as we entered the harbor (Ian even managed to shave on the way in). One last tack and we layed the bulkhead.

Looking backthe first Pacific Cup

O

cean racing between California and Hawaii has a long and storied history. This exciting and beautiful passage has been luring intrepid racers for over a century. Although the Pacific Cup is the youngest member of an elite club of races — it celebrates 40 years in 2018 — it is certainly not the least challenging. Initially billed as the Kauai Race, it has remained true to its founding principles to be a fun yet competitive race. Taking a look back, it’s interesting to see what it was like to compete in the first race well before the age of Spectra, 3DL sails, carbon fiber, satellite telephones and racer trackers.

Hal Nelson’s vision of a “FUN” race from San Francisco to Hawaii began to take shape in 1979. Once Kauai and the beautiful Nawiliwili Yacht Club were selected as the destination, sailors began to take notice. Eventually over 70 skippers had expressed interest in racing to Kauai. What put the race on the map was the entry of Bill Lee’s famed 67-footer, Merlin, skippered by Norton Smith. On June 15, 1980, 40 boats crossed the starting line proving that Nelson and his visionaries had created something with the potential to endure.

Fast-forward seven years, and the race had outgrown both the Ballena Bay Yacht Club and the facilities at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club. George Barrett then spearheaded the formal creation of the Pacific Cup Yacht Club in 1987. A search was done for a new finish line in Hawaii and soon a strong working relationship was developed with the Kaneohe Yacht Club on Oahu. To this day, the Kaneohe Yacht Club remains a steadfast partner of the Pacific Cup Yacht Club and provides one of the most beautiful finish lines the world over.

It’s particularly interesting to hear about the first Pacific Cup from some of those who raced it in 1980. Their experiences highlight the Pacific Cup’s humble beginnings and also make clear that even today participants face many of the same challenges crossing the Pacific Ocean as they did years ago.

and one of my crew asked if I’d heard about the race to Hawaii,” Tysell recalls, “We’d been doing a lot of ocean racing and it sounded like fun.” Tysell and crew were invited to at least three pre-race socials as well as weather and safety briefings. Beyond that, race organizers had developed a detailed and complex support infrastructure for the race, which paid off then, and in future years.

Soufriere had a crew of five that included four guys and Tysell’s girlfriend (who later became his wife). “We did a two-on two-off watch, which worked out really well.” But before their watches began they had to cross the starting line, just offshore of Baker Beach, which proved troublesome. “I was over early at the start and I didn’t find out until we were at Mile Rock — you don’t want to do that in a 2,000mile race. We were first to reach Mile Rock then and we had to turn around and re-start. Later, we were last to Mile Rock.”

Dean and Pamela Treadway, Transpac veterans and longtime owners of the well-known Farr one-ton Sweet Okole raced that first year as well and won their division. “We did the race again in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2014 and 2016. In 2010 we won our division and also won the Best Performance Trophy. Sailmaker (and fellow Farr

one-ton owner) David Hodges was on the boat that year. In 2014 “we were well in the lead and set to win without a doubt, but our rudder broke 140 miles from the finish and we had a DNF,” recall the Treadways.

By many accounts, the first Pacific Cup race was one of the most challenging on record. The weather back then was dramatic and for some, quite dangerous. “In 1980 it blew 30-35 knots the first two or three days,” says Pam Treadway. “Several boats retired very early on.

on the beach down near Santa Cruz. We were reefed and the waves were crashing clear over the boat. That race seemed longer and the finish was at Nawiliwili Harbor, which had no facilities to handle all of the boats. We were in early yet no berths or docks were available.

We had to tie off to a bulkhead and anchor off the back.”

The Soufriere crew faced similar harsh conditions. “We had foul weather gear on for the first two or three days,” Tysell recalls. “One of my crewmembers wore a wetsuit constantly during that time. I had to tell him to take it off because we were sharing a bunk and he was getting pretty ripe.”

The rough weather forced 11 boats to retire early for a variety of reasons, not the least of which were failed rudders. “Rudder posts would leak, another rudder post was bent almost 90 degrees, other rudders just fell off,” says Tysell. “One competitor’s keel separated and that boat was lost at sea. Another boat’s crew ran out of food entirely. There was also a broken boom. But, I would say steering was the biggest problem. If our rudder had failed, our emergency system would not have worked. You need to have something that is really solid.”

Equipment failure wasn’t the only serious challenge encountered.

“About halfway across,” Tysell recalls, “a Santana 35 called Friendship had a medical emergency.” Apparently the skipper was throwing all kinds of equipment overboard and the crew couldn’t understand why; they thought he might be going through DTs, so they tied him up. “As a physician, I was talking to the medical officer on board a nearby New Zealand navy ship and we determined that the skipper had gone off his medications — a very serious development that reiterates how important it is to know your crews’ medical conditions and ensure that they continue their medications.”

“The New Zealanders eventually took the skipper on board, medicated him and delivered him to Hawaii.” At the end of the drama, the Soufriere crew was looking forward to having a little happy hour, which they did on occasion during their crossing. The problem was, they’d run out of ice. Fortunately, the New Zealand Navy, “dropped us a bag of ice and at the bottom of the bag was a bottle of

The only other real drama the Soufriere crew encountered was when their single sideband (SSB) radio gave up the ghost about a week into the race and they lost all communication and their ability to generate mapping data. “There was no such thing as a weather map. The navigator had to draw out weather maps from information gleaned from the SSB. But after the second half of the race we didn’t have any radio thus no detailed maps.” Once they got into the trade winds they went south and it seemed to pay off for them. “As we approached the island we heard the Coast Guard on the VHF radio and were able to communicate with them and they informed the race committee where we were. We were fortunate to have a good navigator who was capable with the sextant.”

One of the finest moments of the Pacific Cup, of course, is the finish. This is a special moment for each and every ocean racer, and everyone has his or her particular memory associated with their finish. A close friend greeted Tysell on the Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s lawn. He offered Tysell a fresh piece of steak — which he was holding in his hand — and hot showers for the crew. That’s a winning combination.

For the Treadways and Sweet Okole it is the finish at Kaneohe that’s particularly special. “It is always fabulous coming into Kaneohe. It feels like Sweet Okole is coming home. That is where she was when I bought her. And of course, after every race the entire Lim family that built the boat greets us. In this year’s Transpac Race, we had Wan Su Lim, daughter of Foo Lim, the boat builder, crewing with us.”

In 1980, Merlin had an incredible finish. Sue Rowley, writing in the August 1980 issue of Latitude 38, told the story. “The chartered fishing boats full of welcomers couldn’t keep up with Merlin as she screamed across the finish line at 15 knots. Her finish, 10 days, 4 hours, 5 minutes, and 52 seconds was not a mainland to Hawaii record, but she was almost 4 days and 700 miles ahead of the second boat in, the Santa Cruz 50, Secret Love from Marina del Rey.” After that finish. Merlin’s crew “donated their magnificent sculptured crystal trophy as a perpetual. The sentiment expressed again and again by the fleet: Ballena Bay Yacht Club did a hell of a job.”

Perhaps it is the idea of finishing a race in one of the most beautiful places on earth that keeps sailors racing to Hawaii and the competitive yet fun spirit that draws them to the Pacific Cup. But there’s a good chance it’s the thrill of surfing down waves in 20-30 knots of breeze and seeing the islands in the distance. Regardless, the pure beauty of Hawaii remains steadfast, just as it was in 1980, luring eager sailors from near and far, and knowing there’s a cold Mai Tai waiting for them at the always welcoming Kaneohe Yacht Club.
