About me

Fifth-year architecture student at ETSAM (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), believing in the power of architecture to improve people’s lives. Belief that drives the pursuit of simplicity, efficiency, and beauty in designs, aiming to be both contemporary and timeless.

Academic exchanges at Tongji University in Shanghai and IUAV in Venice enriched this journey. Shanghai offered a glimpse into China’s dynamic efficiency, while Venice revealed the intricate challenges and unique rhythms of lagoon life, giving these encounters with diverse cultures and individuals have deeply shaped this architectural vision.

Professional experiences in Madrid and Venice further refined these skills. Engaging with real-world projects in studios and sharing knowledge with the next generation of architects at school have kept the mind sharp and ideas fresh, maturing the vision, maintaining motivation, and reinforcing the belief in the transformative impact of thoughtful design.

To whom it may concern,

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter to Pablo Tovar Navarro, following his internship in May and June 2023.

Since I opened my studio, Giorgio Pettenò Architetti, more than twenty years ago, and during my teaching experience at IUAV University of Venice, between 1995 and 2002, I have been in contact with several students I am well aware of their level and abilities, and I can guarantee that Pablo has demonstrated outstanding skills, knowledge, and discipline

He proved his ambition and interest in the field by working in the studio while studying as an Erasmus+ exchange student in Venice, thus broadening his university knowledge with the professional practice of architecture abroad.

During his internship he participated in the design development for the extension of a detached house with a winter garden and a spa and sauna area, and later in the design development for the renovation of a house in Lido di Venezia. Despite his limited experience, he showed great sensitivity and wisdom when it came to bringing proposals and changes to the design of the projects.

He has human qualities that have been felt very positively in the studio, allowing him in both projects to be included in the team very easily, working fully integrated from the first day.

Consequently, I am sure that Pablo, through his ambition and determination, will finish his studies with great success, being an architect of high value wherever he may be.

Best regards, Arch. Giorgio Pettenò

A quien corresponda:

Atentamente,

Andrés Cánovas Alcaraz

ARDE LA CALLE Al sol de San Cristóbal

Studio VIII

ETSAM UPM // Madrid (Spain)

Located in San Cristóbal (Madrid)

The project emerges as a response to the complex interplay between urban density and the fragmented dynamics of the site. It seeks to redefine the concept of the superblock by introducing a delicate balance between built and unbuilt spaces, fostering an environment that prioritizes human interaction while addressing the pragmatic needs of a multifaceted urban program. The architecture evolves as a sequence of volumes and voids, each precisely calibrated to resonate with the rhythms of the surrounding context, creating a sense of cohesion amidst diversity.

Through its materiality and structural clarity, the design weaves together functionality and poetic expression. Steel frameworks intersect seamlessly with robust concrete elements, defining a spatial hierarchy that accommodates both private and collective activities. Porous facades invite natural light and air to penetrate deeply into the spaces, while elevated terraces become transitional realms where architecture dissolves into the landscape, offering moments of pause and reflection within the urban fabric.

At its heart, the project embodies a commitment to sustainability and resilience. Advanced systems for energy production, water management, and modular construction converge to reduce the environmental footprint while enhancing the adaptability of the built environment. Each detail, from the rhythmic articulation of structural components to the careful integration of green spaces, contributes to a narrative that transcends function, capturing the essence of place and shaping a future where architecture becomes a bridge between the human experience and the evolving city.

PLASTIC PARIA Nomadic recycling fleet

Studio VII

ETSAM UPM // Madrid (Spain)

Located in Paria (Venezuela) **awarded with honors**

The Paria Peninsula in Venezuela, known for its fishing heritage and cocoa production, is currently facing a growing invasion of plastics on its beaches and coastline.

This is a scarcely documented territory of 2438 square kilometres, so students from the Central University of Caracas and locals from the Venezuelan coast were contacted to discover that plastic pollution also affects the precariousness of local fleets and ports, causing waste of fish and deterioration of infrastructures. Nine ports of interest are identified and an inventory of abandoned equipment is drawn up, which will be used to build the whole system of action.

Plastic Paria acts as a nomadic fleet that collects, processes and exploits ocean plastics. From the strategic port of Güiria, mobile collection, storage and compaction vessels are launched. The plastics dispersed in the oceans are compacted into useful islands that become the basis for static and non-floating stations. The fleet uses cranes and storage modules, the latter acting as functional capacitors and main elements of the system.

Communication between halls and stations is achieved by a network of mobile walkways with three levels of communication, for pedestrians, for plastics and for suspended freight wagons. To guarantee the energy autonomy of the system, gravity-based storage is used, compacted plastic blocks are lifted with tidal energy and then dropped when tidal energy is required again. The remaining part of the plastic is used to print system components and a series of technicized buoys that monitor the presence of plastic in the oceans and thus forecast the future areas of operation of the fleet.

MARS IS NOW

A comprehensive approach to off earth life

The project envisions a sustainable, modular city on Mars, featuring six specialized walking modules: housing, research, nature mimicry, food production, energy production, and administration. These modules, inspired by the cooperative behavior of ant colonies, form an interconnected system designed to enhance resilience and adaptability in the harsh Martian environment. Each module serves a specific function essential for life on Mars, from providing living spaces and conducting scientific research to producing food and energy.

The modular design allows for easy expansion and reconfiguration, enabling the colony to adapt to changing needs and conditions. This flexibility, combined with advanced life-support systems and renewable energy sources, ensures the colony’s sustainability and self-sufficiency. The integration of nature mimicry creates Earth-like ecosystems, supporting biodiversity and psychological well-being.

Overall, the project demonstrates a comprehensive approach to building a resilient, adaptive, and self-sustaining human settlement on Mars. The interconnected and cooperative nature of the modules, inspired by ant colonies, ensures the colony can thrive in the challenging Martian environment.

CAMARGUE 2100

A scenario for the Parc Naturel Régional d’Est

Camargue 2100 addresses environmental challenges from sea level rise and flooding near the Rhône delta. To mitigate these risks, the plan includes creating a park for periodic flooding, developing a new land use strategy, and building a network of levees to protect residential and industrial areas, aiming to adapt the region to changing environmental conditions while maintaining habitability.

Transforming the agricultural landscape is a core aspect. By 2100, traditional rice farming will be replaced by innovative practices such as hydroponics, fish farming, and algae cultivation, supported by desalinated water. These methods address soil salinization and offer sustainable economic opportunities. The project also envisions a multi-level floodable area, allowing for varied water impact and maximizing land use.

Transportation and connectivity are key components. The plan includes a public and private transport network on water and land to reduce reliance on personal vehicles. Introducing a tram network and cycling paths supports sustainable mobility. Single-family homes will be connected by walkways, ensuring accessibility to main transport routes within a short walking distance. This holistic approach addresses immediate environmental challenges and sets the stage for a sustainable, adaptive future for the Camargue region.

BRINDIS

Vinicultural renaissance

Competition

Located in Tuscany (Italy)

In the picturesque region of Lunigiana, a visionary architectural project has been conceived, merging tradition with modernity to meet the evolving needs of the Podere Fedespina estate. This innovative winery reimagines vinicultural spaces, creating a harmonious blend of functionality and beauty. Reinforced concrete walls rise with grace, supporting elegant ceramic brick vaults that span varying scales, from grand rooms evoking reverence to intimate spaces offering warmth and enclosure.

The journey through the winery begins at a welcoming reception, leading seamlessly through key spaces such as a light-filled courtyard, small offices, and restrooms. The path continues to the majestic barrel room, where wine ages in serene darkness, and culminates in a tasting area connected to a kitchen. This thoughtfully designed circulation educates visitors about the vinification process, from grape harvest to the final tasting experience, immersing them in the rich heritage of winemaking.

Architectural elements open generously to the surrounding landscape, framing breathtaking views of the vineyards with grand pivoting apertures. These openings, divided into sections, allow for both light and air, blending the interior with the natural world. Organized along two primary axes, the robust walls and vaults honor the site’s legacy, while the glazed enclosures align with the vineyards, creating enchanting interstitial spaces. This interplay of structure and transparency offers a sanctuary for reflection, embodying the spirit of Lunigiana’s winemakers and the timeless beauty of the landscape. The project stands as a testament to the enduring connection between people, place, and the exquisite journey of wine.

IUAV WAVE

Covenants for a more-than-human coexistence in the Lagoons of the Mar Menor and Venice.

*Silent, Lingering, Other, Wave

With AmannCanovasMaruri and Estudio Brava Jul. 2023

During the workshop titled “S.L.O.W. Covenants for a more than human coexistence in the lagoons” alternative ways to coexist with the Venice and Mar Menor lagoons, which face ecological threats due to human activity and climate change, were explored. It was proposed a decelerating approach and were represented diverse entities in the lagoons to create a framework for alternative imaginaries of cohabitation.

Through estrangement practices, environmental analysis, and critical registers, the participants collaboratively developed a cartography of controversies to understand and design cohabitation pacts among species. The classroom became a performative political space, replicating the lagoons’ productive landscapes and altering the order of things to showcase unique experiences of minor architecture, where diverse elements cohabited harmoniously.

ETSAM DAI

first year subject teaching assistant

With Eduardo Roig and Atxu Amann Sept. 2023 - Feb. 2024

As a teaching assistant for first-year students at ETSAM in the course “Dibujo Análisis e Ideación 1”. We worked to enhance students’ graphic expressiveness through project-based methods. The course was designed to provide students with a robust foundation in both technical skills and conceptual thinking.

In January, we traveled to Venice, where I had previously spent a year on exchange. This trip allowed me to show the students about the city’s architectural and social controversies and help introduce the second part of the course.

Additionally, I worked in the book compiling student works. A process that involved careful selection and offered me the opportunity to learn from their projects.
