EDUCATION

More Dreams to Fulfill In January, 15 young people joined our scholarship program—14 of them at high school level and one at university level. Thanks to a new phase of a project funded by the Inter-American Foundation, we were able to award 10 scholarships to young eople to enroll in two-year technical university degree programs—including laboratory technician, graphic design and network installation, among others—based on the needs of the labor market. In a context of widespread unemployment, 85% of the last generation of scholarship recipients who completed technical university degrees are currently employed, self-employed or both.

And If We Talk It Out? We started out this new school year by training 35 school administrators and teachers in restorative practices, a framework to strengthen relationships and build stronger school communities. We believe that restoration begins with oneself. So much more than a workshop, we create a space for teachers to come together to reflect, listen and share. In their words: We played, had fun and laughed. They have treated us nicely and made us feel part of the group. I will never forget what we learned and shared.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

6 More on the List We started a new entrepreneurship cycle, where 30 young people received training to develop their entrepreneurial spirit and hone their business ideas, including sessions on financial literacy, marketing and branding. After presenting their sales pitch, 6 aspiring entrepreneurs—3 young women y 3 young men—were awarded inkind seed capital to bring their businesses to life. We also delivered in-kind seed capital—in the form of materials and equipment—to the young women entrepreneurs of FiberLand, Perfect Gift and Stampa Laser, small businesses established last year in the areas of car part fabrication, gifts and laser engraving respectively.

Hey, I'm Roxana! Roxana is the entrepreneur behind FiberLand, a small business venture dedicatded to the fabrication of fiberglass car parts. Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, her business responds to the needs of the local market and has been an important source of income for Roxana and her family. “OYE's support has made a huge impact on my life. Thanks to the training on how to create our brand, finances and how to make a business pitch, and material support in the form of supplies and equipment, I can dedicate all my time and efforts to my business and do it in a way that is more effective, provides higher quality [products] and takes less time."

ARTS + SPORTS

Strengthening Ties Every year, our youth-led sports program organize a sports day for young people from our entire organization to gather together and have fun through a series of recreational activities. This year, more than 50 young people participated in this day of synergy and friendly competition. "Trivia Crack", "Catch It" and "The Labyrinth" were some of the games played, where teamwork and collaboration among the whole group were essential for success.

Life Is Better in Color Last November, young people from our art program made a trip to the small town of Arada, Santa Barbara, to appreciate and seek inspiration from the IV International Guancasco Muralism event. Coordinated by the Honduran artist Javier Espinal, this initiative brought together more than 100 Latin American and Spanish muralists to paint more than 200 murals on walls all across the town. At the beginning of this year, 10 of our young people participated in a muralism training with Javier, concluding with the creation of a mural in the entrance to OYE to pay homage to nature and the city of El Progreso.
